È con grande partecipazione che Fiesole ospita il Congresso internazionale di arte e
cultura del Bonsai “Sakka Ten” della Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe, filiale dell’omonima casa madre giapponese che, per questa edizione, conta della collaborazione
dell’associazione regionale A.T.A.B.S. (Associazione Toscana Amatori Bonsai e Suiseki).
Non è la prima volta che la nostra città si apre all’Oriente, alla cultura e alle tradizioni che
ne sono l’essenza e le radici.
Fiesole diventa vetrina delle opere di bonsai e suiseki, da cui poter esplorare l’affascinante mondo culturale giapponese e tuffarsi nella maestria degli esperti di questa tecnica.
Non solo esposizione, però, ma anche la possibilità di un’attenta osservazione, che può
portare alla concreta opportunità di approfondire gli aspetti estetici, quelli culturali e le
particolarissime tecniche di coltivazione.
Questa antica arte ci porta, una volta ancora, a confrontare le nostre tradizioni ed esperienze con quella del mondo intero: un ponte costruito attraverso la sapiente esperienza
della cultura e della sua condivisione.
Agli organizzatori del congresso che hanno visto nel Colle Etrusco il luogo idoneo a tenere questa manifestazione, va il nostro sentito ringraziamento.

It is with great enthusiasm that Fiesole hosts the International Bonsai Art and Culture
“Sakka Ten” by the association Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe, created by the
“casa madre” of the same name, that, for this edition, boasts the collaboration of the
regional A.T.A.B.S. (Associazione Toscana Amatori Bonsai e Suiseki).
This is not the first time that our town opens up to the East, to the culture and traditions
that are its essence and roots.
Fiesole becomes a showcase for bonsai and suiseki, to experience the fascinating Japanese cultural world and sink into the expert craftsmanship of this technique.
Not just an exhibition, however, but also a possibility of careful observation, which can
lead to a real opportunity to deepen the aesthetic and cultural aspects and the very special cultivation techniques of this art.
This ancient art brings us, once again, to compare our traditions and experiences with
those of the entire world: a bridge built by the skilled hands of culture and its sharing.
We want to say a heartfelt thanks to the organizers of the congress who have chosen
Colle Etrusco to hold this event.

Saluto per la manifestazione “Sakkaten - Alberi d’Autunno”
Sono molto lieto che per il Sakkaten “Alberi d’Autunno” sia stato scelto un luogo splendido come la città di Fiesole in provincia di Firenze.
Ho la netta impressione che in questo momento la Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe sia l’associazione che più si impegna per lo sviluppo della cultura tradizionale del
bonsai e penso che si stia avvicinando il giorno in cui questa cultura pacifica fiorirà meravigliosamente.
Per sostenere questo progetto, la Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai invierà alla manifestazione il maestro Isao Fukita.
Abbiamo stabilito di promuovere nel febbraio del 2016 un convegno intitolato “Simposio
internazionale del bonsai”, congiuntamente alla città di Saitama e alla Nippon Bonsai
Sakka Kyookai, che precederà il “Convegno mondiale del bonsai” da noi organizzato e
che si terrà nell’aprile del 2017, ad Omiya, nella città di Saitama.
Sono convinto del fatto che d’ora in poi, la creazione e lo sviluppo del bonsai, in modo
sempre più globale, dia un contributo alla società.
Attendo numerosi i soci della Nippon Boonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe.
Infine, faccio gli auguri affinché la manifestazione “Alberi d’autunno” si concluda con un
grande successo.

Greetings for the event “Sakkaten – Autumn Trees”
I am very glad that the Sakkaten “Autumn Tress” will be held in a wonderful place as the
town of Fiesole, near Florence.
I have a clear hunch that right now Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe is the association most committed in the development of the traditional culture of bonsai and I think
the day that this peaceful culture will bloom beautifully is pretty close.
To support this project, Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai will send Master Isao Fukita to
this event.
We agreed to promote, in February 2016 a conference entitled “International Bonsai
Symposium”, together with the city of Saitama and Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai, which
will precede the “World Bonsai Congress” organized by us, to be held in April 2017, at
Omiya in the city of Saitama.
I believe that from now on, the creation and development of Bonsai, more and more globally, will make a contribution to society.
I expect to see many members of the association Nippon Boonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe.
Finally, I wish that the event “Autumn Trees” will eventually lead to great success.

Negli ultimi anni il bonsai e la cultura del Giappone sono entrati nel linguaggio quotidiano
delle persone del mondo europeo,questo coinvolge il bonsai, certo non gli aspetti tecnici e di
coltivazione gli alberi sono uguali in tutte le parti del mondo , ma l´aspetto che riguarda il bonsai è quella parte estetica e filosofica che da secoli in Cina prima ed in seguito in Giappone
lo circonda. Per trovare la direzione del nostro cammino ci dobbiamo volgere indietro per vedere da dove veniamo ed è anche per questo che abbiamo fondato la Nippon Bonsai Sakka
Kyookai Europe con l´aiuto della Casa Madre giapponese che da tempo e con competenza
ricerca e divulga il Bonsai. Vorrei ricordare altri due intenti propri della Sakka Europe: il primo
riguarda la conoscenza e l´esperienza dell´incontro con una diversa civiltà ed il piacere di
trovare similitudini con il nostro mondo ma anche stimolo per comprendere l´altro da noi.
Il secondo è quello di aver da subito dato un respiro europeo alla nostra associazione nella
certezza che gli europei condividono una comune cultura.
La quantità di scritti, immagini, trattati, studi e ricerche che coinvolgono il bonsai in Giappone
è enorme ma vorrei qui sottolineare un aspetto interessante per la nostra manifestazione
Sakka-ten: è uso nelle case tradizionali giapponesi quello che si può definire come la cortesia per gli ospiti, si compiono tutte quelle azioni, si sistemano il giardino e gli interni per
rendere piacevole il loro soggiorno, tra i vari atti c´è quello di allestire lo spazio del tokonoma
con rotoli dipinti e ikebana o con bonsai e suiseki.
Per noi e per il Comune di Fiesole è un aspetto interessante perchè consideriamo il pubblico
che visiterà la nostra mostra nostro ospite ed i bonsai un medium di conoscenza della natura
vegetale ed umana. Buon divertimento.

PRESIDENT OF THE NIPPON BONSAI SAKKA KYOOKAI EUROPE
In recent years, Bonsai and Japanese culture have entered the everyday language of
the people of the European world, this involves bonsai, but certainly not its technical
and cultivation aspects; trees are the same in all parts of the world, but the aspect that
concerns Bonsai is that aesthetic and philosophical component that for centuries has
accompanied, first in China and then in Japan, this art. To find the direction of our journey we must turn back to see where we came from and it is also for this reason that we
founded Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe with the help of the Japanese “casa
madre” that has been researching and promoting for a long time and with expertise the
culture of Bonsai. I should mention two other intents of Sakka Europe: the first concerns
the knowledge and experience of the encounter with a different culture and the pleasure
of finding similarities with our world but also an incentive for us to understand each other.
The second is the fact that we have given a European signature to our association from
the very beginning, with the certainty that Europeans share a common culture.
The amount of writings, images, treaties, studies and investigations on Bonsai in Japan is
huge but I would like to emphasize here an interesting aspect of our event Sakka-ten: according to the traditional Japanese courtesy for guests, Japanese people clean up gardens
and interiors, to make the stay of their guests pleasant, and perform a series of actions,
including setting up the Tokonoma with painted scrolls and ikebana or bonsai and suiseki.
We think this is an interesting aspect because we consider the public visiting our exhibition as our guests and Bonsai as a medium for knowledge of plant and human nature.

ISAO FUKITA - OSPITE D’ONORE SAKKA TEN 2014
Nel 1983 sono entrato a Shunkaen come discepolo del maestro Kunyo Kobayashi.
Nel 1990 a causa della morte di mio padre, ho dovuto lasciare Shunkaen. Sono tornato
nella casa di famiglia dove ho proseguito l’attività di mio padre, bonsaista nel Kashōen.
Dal 1994-1996 ho ricevuto per tre anni consecutivi al Nihon Bonsai Sakufūten il premio
dell’Associazione Hana Ippai della sezione Satsuki
Nel 1998 al Sakufūten ho ricevuto il premio del Mainichi Shinbun per la sezione Bunjin
di nuova costituzione. Lo stesso anno mi sono recato a San Francisco (USA) per conferenze sul bonsai.
Nel 1999 al Sakufūten ho ricevuto il premio del Ministro dell’Agricoltura e Foreste giapponese.
Nell’aprile 2013 sono stato invitato come maestro al grande convegno di Liangzhou in
Cina, poi in giugno sono stato chiamato nelle Filippine per il 40° anniversario della fondazione della locale associazione di bonsai per fare dimostrazioni, in settembre sono stato
a Fai della Paganella in Italia e poi a Castillon in Spagna per due convegni. Quindi ho
partecipato a quattro grandi manifestazioni.
Quest’anno sono stato nominato consulente per lo sviluppo tecnico in Cina, e vado in
Cina due settimane ogni mese come consulente.
Tramite il bonsai ho avuto modo di fare esperienza di molte diverse culture viaggiando
all’estero e così facendo ho imparato molte cose. Il bonsai è un linguaggio universale
ed il mio obiettivo facendo bonsai è di farlo apprezzare dalla gente per mezzo della mia
sensibilità e della tecnica che ho acquisito attraverso uno sforzo quotidiano. Spero di
poter continuare d’ora in poi a mantenere un intenso rapporto con tutti voi. Auguro che
la NBSK sezione Europa continui a svilupparsi e a progredire.

ISAO FUKITA - GUEST OF HONOUR SAKKA TEN 2014
In 1983 I joined Shunkaen as a disciple of Master Kunyo Kobayashi.
In 1990, due to the death of my father, I had to leave Shunkaen. I returned to my family
home where I continued my father’s business, bonsai artist in Kashoen.
From 1994-1996 I won for three consecutive years at Nihon Bonsai Sakufūten the prize
of the Association Hana Ippai for the section Satsuki.
In 1998 at Sakufūten I received the prize of the Mainichi Shinbun for the new section
Bunjin. The same year I went to San Francisco (USA) for some conferences on bonsai.
In 1999 at Sakufūten I received the prize of the Minister of Agriculture and Forests in Japan.
In April 2013 I was invited as a master to the general conference of Liangzhou in China, then
in June, I was invited to the Philippines for the 40th anniversary of the founding of the local
Bonsai association for some demonstrations, in September I went to Fai della Paganella in
Italy and then in Castillon in Spain for two conferences. So I participated in four major events.
This year I was appointed consultant for the technical development in China, and I go to
China two weeks every month as a consultant.
Bonsai helped me to experience many different cultures by traveling abroad and in doing so I have learned many things. Bonsai is a universal language and my objective is to
make people appreciate this art through my sensitivity and the technique that I have acquired through a daily effort. I hope I can continue from now on to have a close relationship with all of you. I hope that the European NBSK continues to develop and progress.

ALDO TOLLINI
Docente di lingua Giapponese classica presso l’Università “Ca’ Foscari” di Venezia, è un
profondo conoscitore del Buddismo giapponese e dalla cultura giapponese in generale.
Ha al suo attivo numerose pubblicazioni.
He teaches Japanese classic language at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He is a specialist in Japanese Buddhism and in Japanese culture in general, in which he has published various books.
LUCIANA QUEIROLO
Abilitata all’insegnamento di Materie Artistiche,da trent’anni raccoglie pietre per suiseki,
ricercando apprendimento e condivisione su quest’Arte; da venticinque si dedica alla
sua divulgazione, contribuendo in maniera determinante alla conoscenza ed apprezzamento delle pietre Italiane in tutto il mondo.
“Oltre 20 anni vissuti intensamente nella ricerca di un equilibrio tra la mia cosiddetta
vena artistica e l’estetica, la spiritualità e le suggestioni del suiseki.”
Il primo riconoscimento internazionale assegnato ad un suiseki di Luciana fu il Premio
d’Onore a “Sopra le nubi il tramonto” presso la 3° ASIA-PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL
CONVENTION - di TAIPEI, SINGAPORE, nel 1995.
Nel 2002 donò la sua pietra-montagna allora più rappresentativa, alla PERMANENT EXHIBITION TO “BONSAI AND PENJING MUSEUM ARBORETUM” in WASHINGTON D.C.
affinché molti potessero goderne, prima pietra europea esposta all’Arboretum: “La Bella”.
Nel 1995 Luciana idea, compone e produce “La pietra viva”, primo video con nozioni di
base sull’arte del suiseki.Redige e pubblica la Newsletter ed il Catalogo dell’Associazione Italiana Amatori Suiseki (AIAS); cura i contenuti del Web-site AIAS.
Socio fondatore, Presidente del club suiseki Unici di Liguria dalla fondazione nel 1991;
socio fondatore dell’Associazione Italiana Amatori Suiseki e Presidente dal 2005; socio
ESA dalla sua costituzione, membro del Consiglio Direttivo, socio Unione Bonsaisti Italiani, dalla fondazione; socio IBS dalla fondazione, Consigliere; membro Bonsai Club
International; socio Asociacion Espanola de Suiseki; istruttore e Giudice Suiseki IBS,

Qualified Art teacher, she has been collecting stones for suiseki for thirty years, searching for
knowledge and sharing of this Art; she has been contributing to its dissemination for twenty-five
years, and significantly to the knowledge and appreciation of Italian stones all over the world.

artistic talent and aesthetics, spirituality and the suggestions of suiseki.”
The first international recognition awarded to a suiseki of Luciana was the Honor Award
for “Sopra le nubi il tramonto” at the 3rd ASIA-PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION - in TAIPEI, SINGAPORE, in 1995.
In 2002 she donated her most significant stone-mountain of that time, to the PERMANENT EXHIBITION TO “BONSAI AND PENJING MUSEUM ARBORETUM” in WASHINGTON D.C. so that many could admire it, the first European stone exposed at the
Arboretum: “La Bella”.
In 1995 Luciana creates, composes and produces “La pietra viva”, the first video with the
basics of the art of suiseki. She writes and publishes the Newletter and the Catalog of the
Italian Suiseki Amateurs (AIAS); she is responsible for the content of the AIAS web-site.
Founding member, President of the Suiseki Club Unici di Liguria since it was founded in
1991; founding member of the Italian Association of Suiseki Amateurs and President since
2005; ESA member since its establishment, member of the Board of Directors, member of
the Unione Bonsaisti Italiani, since it was founded; member of IBS since it was founded,

“SAKKA TEN - AUTUMN TREES” 2014
Sakka Ten Autumn Trees è il congresso internazionale che ogni due anni la Nippon Bonsai
Sakka Kyookai Europe organizza in collaborazione con un club che opera nel territorio,
in questa edizione 2014 l’Associazione Toscana Amatori Bonsai e Suiseki (A.T.A.B.S.) di
Firenze ed è il più importante momento di incontro della nostra Associazione.
La mostra di bonsai costituisce per i soci un’occasione di confronto e di crescita e viene
presentata in autunno perché questa è la stagione migliore per ammirare alcune caratteristiche degli alberi: Ie caducifoglie esibiscono la straordinaria varietà di colori, la bellezza dei frutti stagionali, l’architettura del tronco e dei rami, mentre le conifere, avendo
maturato Ie crescite primaverili, si mostrano nella loro austera compostezza.
Il “progetto mostra” prevede che vengano scelti gli alberi e le pietre (suiseki) utilizzando
come criterio di valutazione sia l’aspetto qualitativo di ciascun elemento che l’esigenza di
far conoscere Ie diverse forme, le differenze che si riscontrano in natura tra un’essenza
e l’altra e l’importanza di rappresentare la stagione corrente.
Cerchiamo quindi di avere il maggior numero di specie, di stili, forme e dimensioni differenti per creare un insieme armonioso.
Per ottenere un bonsai possono essere necessari molti anni di assiduo lavoro, pertanto
riteniamo che nell’ambito della nostra mostra un bonsai coltivato per molti anni con attenzione e capacità da un appassionato non possa essere considerato con gli stessi parametri di giudizio di alberi acquistati soltanto pochi giorni prima e presentati alle mostre,
per questo motivo inostri soci espongono solo alberi che coltivano da almeno cinque
anni e così cerchiamo di stimolare chi il bonsai lo vive con passione, riconoscendone
l’impegno ed i sacrifici.
ll valore di un bonsai non può essere definito sommando una serie di numeri o attraverso una
razionale valutazione di elementi tecnici, il bonsai è un essere vivente che assieme al suo
coltivatore ha percorso un lungo cammino per arrivare ad essere cosi come Io vediamo e
ogni elemento esposto in questa mostra è frutto di questo rapporto intimo tra uomo e natura.
Sakka Ten Autumn Trees è il desiderio di condividere con gli altri la serenità che noi troviamo nel coltivare i nostri bonsai.

“SAKKA TEN - AUTUMN TREES” 2014
Sakka Ten Autumn Trees is the international conference organized every two years by
Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe in collaboration with a club that operates in the
area; this year 2014, it is the Tuscany Association of Bonsai and Suiseki Amateurs
(A.T.A.B.S.) in Florence and this is the most important meeting place of our Association.
The Bonsai exhibition is an opportunity for our members of confrontation and growth and
it is held in autumn because this is the best season to enjoy some of the characteristics
of trees: deciduous trees exhibit an extraordinary variety of colors, the beauty of their
seasonal fruits, the architecture of their trunk and branches, while the conifers, after
spring growth, show their austere composure.
For the “exhibition project” trees and stones (suiseki) are chosen using as a criterion for
assessment both the qualitative aspect of each element and the need to raise awareness of the different forms, the differences that are found in nature between an essence
and another and the importance of representing the current season.
So we try to have the greatest number of species, styles, shapes and sizes to create a
harmonious whole.
Growing a bonsai tree can take many years of hard work, therefore we believe that for
our exhibition a bonsai tree grown over many years with care and skills by someone who
truly loves this art can not be considered with the same parameters of trees purchased
only a few days earlier and shown at exhibitions, for this reason our members expose
only trees that they have been growing for at least five years, and so we try to encourage
those who live bonsai with passion, recognizing their commitment and sacrifices.
The value of a bonsai can not be defined by adding a series of numbers or through a
rational assessment of technical elements, a bonsai is a living being that, along with its

FARE BONSAI
I primi bonsai visti, molti anni fa per i più anziani di noi , ci suggerivano una bellezza diversa, rispetto a quella consueta nella nostra città. Ma non era sufficiente ammirarli, era
necessario farne esperienza, bisognava provare.Trovare con chi tentare questa pratica,
il passo successivo e quasi indispensabile per apprendere più velocemente le nozioni
e le tecniche nel corso di tante attività divertenti, da godere in comune tra gli amici di
un club nuovo nuovo. Cercare e cercare, qualche volta trovare, imparare ad aspettare e rispettare i tempi delle essenze, delle stagioni, della natura, coltivare con sempre
maggiore perizia, ascoltare chi ne sa di più e vedere come fa, vedere ed ancora vedere,
soprattutto imparare a vedere e saper riconoscere i modelli naturali, negli stili della tradizione. E poi, ed insieme, fare, sbagliare, sperimentare e dare forma imparando che non
si noti la mano dell’uomo, tutt’uno ormai con la pianta con la quale lavora. Una disciplina
ricca di soddisfazioni, ogni anno, ogni stagione, ogni giorno che passa sempre di più ed
a volte educare un bonsai può diventare anche cercare di migliorare se stessi.
Un’associazione locale di amatori raccoglie le persone più diverse da tutti i punti di vista;
unite dallo stesso scopo, si incontrano (a volte anche si scontrano), fanno amicizia e
pratica insieme, insegnano qualcosa ai nuovi arrivati, insieme imparano dai più bravi e
dai maestri invitati, si confrontano. Non è una scuola organizzata, con un maestro che
non si discute, nella quale si impara con ordine; nel club a volte l’ordine è un po’ carente,
difficile che gli insegnamenti siano sistematici, i tempi a volte dispersivi, gli errori molti,
c’è chi viene e chi va, chi arriva e chi si perde; tante persone, tanti livelli, tanti modi di
vedere ed accostarsi allo stesso tema comune: è vita.

THE ARTE OF BONSAI
The early bonsai trees, much older than us, suggested us a beauty different than the
usual beauty seen in our city. But it was not enough to admire them, we had to experience them, we had to try. Finding the people with whom to practice this art, the next and
almost indispensable step would be to learn as fast as could its notions and techniques
in the course of many fun activities to enjoy with friends of a new club. Trying and trying,
sometimes finding, learning to wait and respect the times essences, seasons, nature,
growing with increasing expertise, listening to those who know more and seeing how to
do it, seeing and seeing again, especially learning to see and recognize the natural patterns, in the styles of tradition.essenze. And then, together, doing it, doing it in the wrong
way, experiencing and shaping, learning that the man’s hand should not be noticed, and
become one with the plant you are working on. A satisfying discipline, every year, every
season, every day more and more and sometimes educate a bonsai can also mean trying to be a better person.
A local association of amateurs gathers the most diverse people from all points of view,
united by the same purpose, they meet (and sometimes they argue), they become
friends and practice together, they teach something to newcomers, together they learn
from the most talented and the masters invited, they confront themselves. It is not an
organized school, with a teacher who can not be contradicted, where you learn by following a predefined path; sometimes there is no order, lessons are not systematic, times are
sometimes dispersive, there are mistakes, people come and go, people come and soon
are lost; so many people, so many levels, so many ways of seeing and approaching the
same common theme, which is life.

FARE SUISEKI
Si dice che al suiseki si arriva attraverso il bonsai, come se questa fosse una strada
preparatoria e spesso è davvero così. Solitamente il primo approccio è di discreto disinteresse, c’è chi li considera semplicemente delle pietre, qualcuno se ne sente addirittura
respinto; pochi, da subito e grazie ad una sensibilità particolare, riescono a coglierne la
bellezza intrinseca, quella dello spettacolo straordinario che ci offre la natura. Con il passare del tempo, e vedendoli sempre più spesso, si comincia a notare che effettivamente
questi “sassi” hanno un certo fascino; magari in qualche modo si entra in possesso di
una “pietruzza” interessante e da lì può iniziare una nuova passione. Chi non ha mai
raccolto un sasso al mare o ai monti, lo ha osservato perché attratto da un disegno, dai
colori o da una forma inusuale ma intrigante? Non per questo lo possiamo considerare
“fare suiseki”, ma è innegabile che alcune pietre siano in grado di sbaragliare l’iniziale
indifferenza. La caratteristica di essere solidi, duri e compatti li fa associare alla longevità, all’immortalità, qualità che hanno da sempre affascinato così tanto da far ritenere le
pietre, come le montagne, dimora degli dei e certamente un buon suiseki ha una notevole potenza evocativa ed è in grado di trasmettere grande energia: Sono incredibili le
straordinarie sensazioni che può trasmettere un semplice”sasso”!
Il mio “fare suiseki” lo sento ricco di momenti felici e impagabili, come il ritrovamento di un
pezzo importante: stranamente non mi interessa per nulla se mi sono infangato razzolando
nella melma, penso che nessuno prima di me aveva visto quella pietra e sarà mio il privilegio di esaltarla al massimo! Nella necessaria e successiva pulizia, i particolari si rivelano
lentamente uno dopo l’altro, cosi’ non vedo l’ora di finire per godere della nuova scoperta.
Scolpire il daiza è la conclusione sublime di un percorso, è un dolce obbligo che abbiamo
verso la pietra scelta e per realizzare al meglio il suo trono dobbiamo entrare in sintonia con
lei, studiarla in tutte le sue caratteristiche allo scopo di elevarla al rango di suiseki.
Ed il divertimento non finisce qui: organizzare le gite con gli amici per la ricerca, condividere i nostri ritrovamenti, le prime impressioni assieme, il ritorno a casa stanchi ma felici
e se non è andata bene non importa, sarà per un’altra volta! Ma ho un desiderio che non
posso realizzare: tenere tutte le mie pietre sempre esposte e ben visibili, cosi’ da poterne
godere in ogni momento. Va beh, sarà in un’altra vita...

THE ART OF SUISEKI
They say that you get to suiseki through bonsai, as if this was a preparatory stage, and often it is. Usually, the first approach is a discreet indifference, there are those who consider
them simply stones, others feel even rejected by them; only a few, thanks to a special sensitivity can immediately grasp its intrinsic beauty, that of the extraordinary spectacle that
nature offers us. Over time, and seeing them more and more often, you begin to notice
that in fact these “stones” have a certain charm; maybe somehow come into possession of
an interesting “small stone” and that is how your passion grows. Who has not ever picked
up a stone at the beach or walking in the mountains, because attracted by its drawing,
colors or its unusual but intriguing shape? Certainly we can not consider it as “suiseki”, but
it is undeniable that some stones are able to defeat the initial indifference. The characteristic of these hard and compact solids, makes you associate them with longevity, immortality,
qualities that have always been fascinated so much that stones are considered, as mountains, abode of the gods, and certainly a good suiseki has a strong evocative power and
is able to transmit great energy: a simple “stone” can really transmit amazing sensations!
My “suiseki” is full of happy and priceless moments, such as the discovery of an important piece: strangely I do not care if I am covered in mud, I think that no one before
me had seen that stone and I will have the privilege to make it look even better! In the
necessary and subsequent cleaning, the details are revealed slowly, one after the other,
so I can not wait to finish to enjoy the new discovery. Sculpting a daiza is the sublime
conclusion of a journey, it is a sweet obligation that we have towards the stone that we
have chosen and to create its best throne we empathize with her, studying it in all its
characteristics in order to elevate it to the status of suiseki.
But that is not all: organizing trips with friends to search, share our findings, our first impressions, returning home tired but happy, and if it did not go well it does not matter, some
other time perhaps! But I have a dream that I can not achieve: keep all my stones always
exposed and visible, so that I can enjoy every moment. Okay, perhaps in another life ...

Nasce nel 2000 per volere della Nippon Sakka Kyookai Japan, per divulgare in Europa
le antiche tradizioni della cultura giapponese legata al bonsai.
Poiché molti aspetti del bonsai non sono comprensibili se non attraverso un approfondimento della cultura da cui esso deriva, l’Associazione organizza delle attività che riguardano non solo lo studio dell’estetica e delle tecniche di coltivazione, ma anche dell’esposizione di bonsai e suiseki e di tutte le arti tradizionali connesse ai bonsai. Durante
gli eventi di maggior rilievo viene supportata dalla Casa Madre, che contribuisce con la
partecipazione dei suoi prestigiosi Maestri. Dato lo scopo didattico dell’Associazione,
viene esclusa dalle attività la competizione in qualsiasi forma.

NIPPON BONSAI SAKKA KYOOKAI EUROPE
Was founded in 2000 with help of Nippon Bonsai Kyookai Japan in order to spread ancient bonsai art. Since bonsai are not really appreciable unless through the study of the
culture it comes from, the Association organises activities regarding the display of bonsai
and suisek. The Association also holds lectures about every other possible traditional
art concerned to bonsai. During the events of major importance there is the support of
mother house which contributes with the partecipation of her prestigios masters. Any
competition is stricly banned since the show in purely didactical.

ASSOCIAZIONE TOSCANA AMATORI BONSAI E SUISEKI (A.T.A.B.S.)
È davvero lontano quel 16 febbraio 1985 quando Gianfranco Giorgi, Elio Boni, Lorenzo
Agnoletti e Umberto Margiacchi decisero di costituire l’Associazione Toscana Amatori
Bonsai e Suiseki (A.T.A.B.S.).
Gianfranco Giorgi, al momento della fondazione, volle fortemente che nella sigla dell’Associazione fosse chiaramente espressa la parola “suiseki” ed a questo primato teniamo
particolarmente perché risulta essere stata la prima volta, non solo in Italia ma anche in
Europa. Non sappiamo quanto questa scelta fosse consapevole, ma è inconfutabile che,
fin dalla prima occasione, qualche “sasso “ sia sempre stato esposto alle nostre mostre.
I Maestri passati da Firenze in questi trent’anni di attività sono stati davvero molti, praticamente tutti quelli considerati pionieri, e tanti altri di diverse tendenze, italiani, europei,
orientali. Da sempre abbiamo perseguito scopi culturali, scientifici e tecnici promuovendo o anche partecipando ad eventi a carattere sociale o solidale, incentivando costantemente la crescita di tutti ed in particolare modo quella dei soci di livello medio, diffondendo l’arte del bonsai e del suiseki senza fini di lucro né competitivi.
Firenze e ATABS non si sono mai tirate indietro quando c’erano da ospitare eventi importanti, come le numerose mostre del Coordinamento Toscano oppure gli incontri dedicati
al Suiseki, sia di interesse nazionale che europeo, così ospitare gli amici della NBSKE
per la loro mostra biennale ci onora, nel riconoscimento che gli obiettivi perseguiti sono
gli stessi. Ma sarebbe stato tutto molto più difficile senza un Comune come quello di
Fiesole, da subito disposto ad accogliere la manifestazione davvero a braccia aperte ed
a mettere a disposizione tutte le risorse possibili!

ASSOCIAZIONE TOSCANA AMATORI BONSAI E SUISEKI (A.T.A.B.S.)
That February 16, 1985 when Gianfranco Giorgi, Elio Boni, Lorenzo Agnoletti and Umberto Margiacchi decided to found the Tuscany Association of Bonsai and Suiseki Amateurs (A.T.A.B.S.), seems really far away.
Gianfranco Giorgi, at the time of its establishment, strongly wanted that the acronym
of the Association clearly expressed the word “suiseki” and we are really proud of this
record because it seems to be the first time, not just in Italy, but also in Europe. We do
not know if it was done with awareness, but it is undeniable that, since the first occasion,
some “stones” have always been present in our exhibitions.
Many masters have come to Florence during these last thirty years of activity, almost all
considered as pioneers, and many others of different trends, Italian, European, Asiatic.
We have always pursued cultural, scientific and technical objectives, promoting or even
participating in social or solidarity events, constantly encouraging the growth of all and,
in particular of medium-level members, spreading the art of bonsai and suiseki with nonprofit nor competitive purposes.
Florence and ATABS have never refused to host major events, such as the many exhibits
of Coordinamento Toscano or meetings dedicated to Suiseki, both national and European, therefore hosting the friends of NBSKE for their biennial exhibition is an honor for
us, since the objectives are the same. But everything would have been much more difficult without the municipality of Fiesole, immediately prepared to accept the event with
open arms and to make available all the resources it has!
