This might be explained by the WWII loss of ledger information prior to 1942? Because of this, there might be some special attention necessary in some cases?!! *916001 - 916313 *916314 - 916540 *916541 - 916700 1948 1949 1950 6C2500 Sport (F d'O, Touring, Pinin Farina, others) 3.0m, 1370kg, 155 km/h, 90cv, 14/61 6C2500 Sport (F d'O, Pinin Farina, others) (1555kg) 6C2500 Sport (F d'O) 917001 - 917032 917033 - 917099 917100 - 917151 1949 1950 1951 6C2500 Sport Motore Avanzato 6C2500 Sport Motore Avanzato 6C2500 Sport Motore Avanzato 918001 - 918035 918036 - 918076 918077 - 918112 918113 - 918150 1950 1951 1952 1953 6C2500 Sport (motore Super Sport) 6C2500 Sport (motore Super Sport) 6C2500 Sport (motore Super Sport) 6C2500 Sport (motore Super Sport) 920001 - 920003 1948 (92000x converted) 1950 6C2500 Competizione 6C3000 Competizione 2.50m, 850kg, 200 km/h, 145cv, 16/59 2.50m, 870kg, 225 km/h, 168cv, 12/49 **924xxx series engines were “Coloniale” engines for automotive use and seem also to be marine engines for military use. **925xxx series numbers were seemingly assigned to marine engines, seemingly for civilian use. Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport engine conversions Early “SS” cars had a plate on the firewall that specifically began “SS” and this was followed by a number. There was probably a build sheet (and perhaps a ledger?) at Alfa Romeo that described the mechanical preparation of the very early cars and this practice probably continued at some level into the production of more standardized versions. It would appear that the commercialized “Super Sport” configuration was considered to be a modification to the engine (as well as perhaps the gearbox on occasion) and that there was a “kit number” or “build number” for that conversion. A plate was attached to the firewall or the right side inner fender panel for cars that were fitted by Alfa Romeo (or their dealers?) with the “Super Sport” conversion. There is no reason to assume that a SuperSport conversion was always precisely the same and there is every reason to believe that some engines had additional preparation above and beyond the nominal “Super Sport” conversion. Clues can sometimes be found in compression ratios stamped near the engine number, but there is no reason to believe that every mechanic assembling an engine followed precisely the same procedure as another mechanic doing similar work. It would seem logical that a good number of early SS conversions might have been performed as retrofits, but it also seems logical that a retrofit might have been fitted to any car/engine at most any time during the original production run and perhaps even into a short period of time after production stopped. For the “918xxx” series of chassis numbers, it would seem that all engines were fitted with the Super Sport conversion, but no numbers have been observed or reported as yet to indicate that a kit number was recorded on the car. Any additional SS “conversion kit” numbers would be very much welcomed to this study! This chart attempts to show the Super Sport “kit” or conversion numbers identified thus far. Any additional information would be most welcome! In some cases, the “SS” designation appears on the plate affixed to the car. In later cars, the plate shows only the number without mentioning “SS”. Again, the plate is most commonly found on the firewall (particularly for early cars), but is most often found on the right inner fender panel near the carburetors. To be thorough in our study, we should probably note the types of plates found and the location fitted. Photos are always nice! SS # Motore Chassis Chassis date Notes: For those engines that have compression ratio markings near the engine number, I would like to record those as well. If there is no marking, I would like to write “none”. Please note that the compression ratio is also marked on some “Turismo” and “Sport” engines as well. When we have enough data to begin listing those cars and engines in a cross-reference listing, I will do so. “SS5” SS17 SS21 SS__ SS54 SS71 motore 923880 motore 923822 motore 923824 motore 923863 motore 923872 motore 923905 was in chassis N. 915005 in chassis N. 915038 in chassis N. 915042 in chassis N. 915082 in chassis N. ______ in chassis N. 915105 1939 1940 6.3.40 1940 SS76 SS__ motore 923908 motore 923963 ?? in chassis N. 915108 in chassis N. 915163 1940 ref: Peter Marshall 1940 Perhaps a new “SS” series begins without the “SS” prefix?
