Permaculture: The True Story of Fagagna ’s
Storks

In times like ours, where greed is destroying
the world and nobody seems to care much
about it, the simple truth of a small
community, gathered around a project of
solidarity to support a specific breed of bird
and maintain its habitat, could not be more
appropriate as the cover piece for Dantemag`s
2013 green issue. Read on to learn about the
extraordinary undertaking of the small village
of Fagagna.
Permaculture is a branch of ecological design,
or ecological engineering, that develops
sustainable environments in which humans,
animals, and the natural environment are all
in a consciously made and maintained
balance. As a design philosophy, it seeks to
both exploit and imitate naturally occurring
patterns.
In tempi come i nostri, dove l'avidità sta
distruggendo il mondo e nessuno sembra
preoccuparsi più di tanto, la semplice verità di
una piccola comunità, riunita intorno a un
progetto di solidarietà a sostegno di una
specifica razza di uccello e di mantenere il
suo habitat, non potrebbe essere più
appropriato per la copertina del numero verde
2013 di Dantemag.

Fagagna’s storks
The people in the Italian village of Fagagna
put this complex philosophy into practice
spontaneously, in response to nothing more
than a felt need. But in order to explain their
experience, we need to tell a story.
Once upon a time, a young pair of storks,
sensing the end of winter on the shores of
Africa, decided it was time to begin the
journey back to northern Europe. Following
the paths of their ancestors, they yearned to
return to the place of their birth to start a
family there.
They took off using the first available thermal
for the beginning of their epic journey
together. As they neared their destination,
they decided to stop for a rest and a bit of
food before embarking on the last leg of the
journey. They glided down onto some fields
that looked to be the right sort to find frogs,
fish or whatever else might be there to eat.

mette spontaneamente in pratica questa
complessa filosofia, in risposta a niente di più
che a un bisogno sentito. Ma per spiegare la
loro esperienza, abbiamo bisogno di
raccontare una storia.
C'era una volta, una giovane coppia di
cicogne, che intuendo la fine dell'inverno
sulle coste dell'Africa, ha deciso che era ora
di iniziare il viaggio di ritorno verso l'Europa
del nord. Seguendo i sentieri dei loro
antenati, avevano nostalgia di tornare al
luogo della loro nascita per iniziare una
famiglia.
Hanno preso il via assieme con la prima
corrente termica disponibile per l'inizio del
loro viaggio epico. Mentre si avvicinavano
alla loro destinazione, hanno deciso di
fermarsi per un riposo e un po' di cibo prima
di intraprendere l'ultima tappa del viaggio.

Cicogne nei campi di Fagagna
Once on the ground, like any young couple,
they started teasing and flirting, clattering
bills with each other. They were so happy
because at that moment the world was theirs.
The sun was setting so they decided to sleep
on what they felt was the most secure place in
the area – on the chimney of an old derelict
building. The next morning, when they woke
up with the first rays of light, an amazing
landscape unfolded before their eyes:
beautiful hills surrounding a valley marked by
the clean water of a river running through it.
Una volta a terra, come qualsiasi giovane
coppia, importunando e agitandosi con tutti
gli altri, hanno iniziato a fare risuonare il
becco. Erano così felici perché in quel
momento il mondo era loro.
Il sole stava tramontando e così hanno
deciso di dormire su quello che sentivano
fosse il luogo più sicuro della zona, sul
camino di un vecchio edificio abbandonato.
La mattina dopo, quando si svegliarono con i
primi raggi di luce, un paesaggio incredibile
era dispiegato davanti ai loro occhi: splendide
colline che circondano una valle segnata
dall'acqua pulita di un fiume che l'attraversa.
It was 1989 and the moment when our real
story begins.
The people of Dignano, a village in the Friuli
region of northeastern Italy, immediately
noticed the storks perched on top of the
chimney of the old silk factory building.
“Have they got separated from their flock?”
people wondered. Not even the oldest person
in the village could ever remember storks
passing through. The birds were creating quite
a stir in the village.

nostra vera storia.
Gli abitanti di Dignano, un villaggio nella
regione Friuli a nord-est dell’Italia, notarono
subito le cicogne appollaiate in cima al
camino della vecchia filanda di seta. La gente
si chiedeva: "si sono separate dal loro
stormo?" Neppure la persona più anziana del
villaggio poteva ricordare cicogne di
passaggio. Gli uccelli stavano creando molto
scalpore nel paese.
Immediately, the more conscientious villagers
organised a group to protect the young pair
from anybody who might want to harm them.
They started carefully monitoring the birds’
behaviour. The excitement reached fever pitch
when they realised the pair had actually
started gathering large twigs and arranging
them on the chimney top – a clear sign the
birds were building a nest.

Immediatamente, gli abitanti del villaggio più
coscienziosi organizzarono un gruppo per
proteggere la giovane coppia da qualcuno
che volesse far loro del male. Hanno
cominciato a monitorare attentamente il
comportamento degli uccelli. L'eccitazione
raggiunse il culmine quando realizzarono che
la coppia aveva iniziato la raccolta di grandi
ramoscelli disponendoli in cima al camino: un
chiaro segno che gli uccelli stavano
costruendo un nido.

Research in the library archives in Udine, the
region’s capital, revealed that the last
documented record of storks visiting the area
went back centuries. They also discovered
that their area had once been a regular
stopover for the birds migrating to northern
Europe and that some of them had even
nested there permanently. The
industrialisation of the local region and the
rise in temperature evidently had something
to do with their disappearance.
But the storks were back now, and the
villagers of Dignano were doing their best to
create a friendly environment for the young
pair.
La ricerca negli archivi della biblioteca a
Udine, capoluogo della regione, ha rivelato
che l'ultima traccia documentata di cicogne
che visitarono la zona risaliva a secoli
addietro. E’ stato così anche scoperto che
quel territorio una volta era regolarmente
meta per una sosta per gli uccelli migratori
verso l'Europa del nord e che alcuni di loro
avevano anche nidificato lì in modo
permanente. L'industrializzazione della
regione e l'aumento della temperatura
evidentemente aveva qualcosa a che fare
con la loro scomparsa.
Ma le cicogne erano tornate, e gli abitanti di
Dignano stavano facendo del loro meglio per
creare un ambiente accogliente per la
giovane coppia.
Everything seemed to be working extremely
well. It took about twenty days for the young
storks to finish the nest.
Tutto sembrava funzionare molto bene. Ci
sono voluti circa 20 giorni per le giovani
cicogne per finire il nido.
"Guarda, le cicogne hanno fatto un cappello a
questo camino alto!" scherzavano i bambini
locali
“Look, the storks have made a hat for that tall
chimney!” joked the local kids as they gazed
up at the nest from a distance. The birds were
carefully observed and some people even
went up in gliders flying at a safe height
above the nest. But as soon as two eggs were
spotted and the birds had started incubating,
the flights stopped so as not to disturb them.

uccelli sono stati attentamente osservati e
alcune persone sono anche andate con

But as is usual in fairy tales, tragedy always
looms around the corner. Unfortunately
during the incubation period the male stork
disappeared for some unknown reason and
left the female, who continued to sit alone on
the eggs. She did not leave the nest for a
single moment. On the ground, the entire
village waited anxiously, especially when a
major storm arrived, as they were afraid it
might blow away the whole nest. But the
female stayed still and strong through the bad
weather, and several days later a little head
peeped out from under Mrs Stork!
Ma, come accade nelle favole, la tragedia è
sempre dietro l'angolo. Purtroppo durante il
periodo di incubazione della cicogna il
maschio è scomparso per qualche motivo
sconosciuto e ha lasciato la femmina, che
continuava a covare da sola le uova. Non
lasciò il nido per un solo momento. A terra
l'intero villaggio aspettava con ansia,
soprattutto quando una forte tempesta arrivò,
come avevano paura, che avrebbe potuto
spazzare via l'intero nido. Ma la femmina
rimase ferma e forte superando il cattivo
tempo, e dopo alcuni giorni una piccola testa
faceva capolino da sotto la signora Cicogna!
People remember that the village had never
been so happy. The story made headlines in
the local papers and people started to flock to
visit the place, even people from the
neighbouring villages. “It was something I`ll
never forget”, an elderly lady I met in a local
bar told me. “Yes,we felt like we were the
chosen ones”, some others joked, laughing.
La gente si ricorda che il paese non era mai
stato così felice. La storia fece notizia sui
giornali locali e le persone cominciarono ad
affluire, anche dalle località vicine. "E' stata
una cosa che non dimenticherò mai ", mi ha
detto una signora anziana che ho incontrato
in un bar locale. "Sì, ci siamo sentiti come se
fossimo gli eletti"; alcuni altri scherzavano,
ridendo.

Maybe it was the exposure or the stress of
being left alone to cope during the remaining
incubation period. Who knows? Whatever it
was, after a couple of days the young mother
also disappeared, abandoning her chick and
the other unhatched egg.
Forse è stata l'esposizione o lo stress per
essere stata lasciata sola ad affrontare il
periodo di incubazione rimanente. Chi lo sa?
Qualunque cosa fosse, dopo un paio di giorni
la giovane madre è scomparsa,

The locals did not give way to disappointment
but acted immediately. They organised the
rescue of the little one and, with the help of a
local bird expert, they transferred the egg to a
sitting hen. In that way, they managed to
hatch it.
La gente del posto non ha dimostrato
delusione, ma ha agito immediatamente. Ha
organizzato il salvataggio del piccolo e, con
l'aiuto di un esperto locale, ha trasferito l'uovo
ad una gallina che covava. In questo modo,
l’uovo è riuscito a schiudersi.
The local vet certified that the chicks were in
good health. But since they had to be raised
by hand, a special nursery was created; locals
took turns feeding them with a suitable
mixture made from mashed up frogs, fish and
small rodents. In no time at all the two chicks
grew into strong and beautiful birds. After
two months, they had reached their full size
and wanted to start flying.
Un veterinario ha confermato che i piccoli
erano in buona salute. Ma dato che
dovevano essere allevati manualmente, è
stato allestito un vivaio speciale; i locali si
sono alternati per nutrirli con una miscela
adatta a base di rane tritate, pesci e piccoli
roditori. In poco tempo i due pulcini sono
cresciuti diventando forti e belli. Dopo due
mesi, avendo raggiunto il loro completo
sviluppo, volevano cominciare a volare
.

Now the enclosure that had been built for
them was not large enough anymore – they
had to learn to fly properly if they were to be
returned to the wild. The only option seemed
to be to move them to a bird sanctuary. The
villagers did not really like that idea: “Why
put them in cages? Can’t we keep them free
around here?” Others suggested: “What if we
created a centre to reintroduce the birds to the
area on a permanent basis?” Most of the
villagers backed this idea.

volevano ritornare nel loro ambiente naturale.

del villaggio non gradivano molto questa idea:
"Perché metterle in gabbia? Non possiamo
tenerle libere da queste parti?". Altri
suggerirono: " E se creassimo un centro
permanente per reintrodurre le cicogne nella
zona?" La maggior parte degli abitanti del
villaggio appoggiò questa idea.

A nearby village called Fagagna, however,
seemed to be most serious about running with
this suggestion. It was the perfect opportunity
to redevelop some old disused clay pits, rich
with old rare native plants. For years now, the
lakes formed in these clay pits had been a
huge cause of concern for the mothers
roundabouts because their children, despite
warnings not to, used it as an adventure
playground and sometimes in the summer
they would even go swimming there. After
carefully studying the site, it became clear it
would be the ideal place for the storks to live.

tuttavia più idonea per realizzare questo
suggestivo progetto. E' stata la perfetta
opportunità per riqualificare alcune vecchie
cave di argilla in disuso, ricche di vecchie
piante autoctone rare. Da anni i laghi
formatisi in quelle cave rappresentavano, per
le madri dei dintorni, un enorme motivo di
preoccupazione perché i loro figli, nonostante
gli avvertimenti di non farlo, usavano la zona
come un parco giochi e a volte, in estate,
andavano la anche a nuotare. Dopo aver
studiato attentamente il sito, è apparso chiaro
che sarebbe stato il luogo ideale per far
vivere le cicogne

The plan was to keep the birds in giant
aviaries for three years – this would give them
ample time to get accustomed to their habitat
and then slowly they would be released to
roam free in the area.
The whole project was explained in detail to
all the inhabitants of Fagagna. It was
paramount for the storks’ survival to create a
friendly environment around them and to
keep it safe for them to be able to feed on
their natural food. The local farmers agreed to
change their farming habits. They would no
longer use certain types of fertilisers or
pesticides which could destroy the birds’
principal food chain.

Il piano era quello di tenere gli uccelli in
giganti voliere per tre anni: questo avrebbe
dato loro il tempo di abituarsi all’habitat e poi
lentamente sarebbero state libere di vagare
nel terrritorio.
L'intero progetto è stato dettagliatamente
spiegato agli abitanti di Fagagna. E' stato
fondamentale, per la sopravvivenza delle
cicogne, creare un ambiente accogliente
attorno a loro e mantenerlo in modo da
garantire un pascolo con cibo naturale. Gli
agricoltori locali hanno deciso di cambiare le
loro abitudini di coltivazione. Non avrebbero
più utilizzato alcuni tipi di fertilizzanti o
pesticidi che avrebbero potuto distruggere la
principale catena alimentare per gli uccelli.

This would require a huge collective effort on
the part of every villager in Fagagna to create
this new situation, but everyone agreed to the
project with enthusiasm. So local volunteers
worked hard to fence off the whole area and
to create their “Oasis Quadris.” The bird
sanctuary’s name came from the fact the lakes
there were square-shaped (quadris in the local
dialect). The first guests were, of course, the
rescued storks, soon to be followed by others
donated from another bird sanctuary in Pavia
near Milan. These were then paired with some
storks brought from Switzerland so as to
avoid inbreeding.
It did not take long for the villagers of
Fagagna, or Feagne as they call it in their
local language, to start to see some rewards
for their efforts.
Questo ha richiesto un enorme sforzo
collettivo da parte di ogni abitante di Fagagna
per creare questa nuova situazione, ma tutti
hanno aderito al progetto con entusiasmo.
Così i volontari locali hanno lavorato
duramente per recintare tutta l'area e per
creare la loro "Oasi Quadris". Il nome del
“santuario degli uccelli” deriva dal fatto che i
laghi erano di forma quadrata (“quadris” nel
dialetto locale). I primi ospiti sono state,
ovviamente, le cicogne salvate, presto
seguite da altre donate da un altro rifugio
degli uccelli a Pavia nei pressi di Milano.
Queste sono state poi accoppiate con alcune
cicogne portate dalla Svizzera per evitare
incroci.
Non ci volle molto per gli abitanti di Fagagna,
o Feagne come la chiamano nella lingua
locale, per iniziare a vedere alcune
soddisfazioni per i loro sforzi.

The fact that the farmers no longer used any
chemicals on their crops meant the quality of
their cows’ milk increased, as did the cheese
made from it. Fagagna agricultural products
were quickly recognised as among the best in
the area and demand for them grew
exponentially, including among others, its
salami, sausages and the famous pestat of
Feagne a delicious local pate. People began
flocking to the Oasis Quadris because they
were able to see the storks at such close
quarters.

Il fatto che gli agricoltori non hanno più
utilizzato prodotti chimici per le loro colture ha
comportato che la qualità del latte delle loro
mucche è migliorata, e, conseguentemente, il
formaggio fatto con esso. I prodotti agricoli di
Fagagna sono stati rapidamente riconosciuti
come tra i migliori della zona e la loro
domanda è cresciuta in modo esponenziale,
compresi tra gli altri, il salame, le salsicce e il
famoso “pestât di Feagne”: un delizioso trito
prodotto secondo una vecchia ricetta locale.

da vicino.
Local restaurants and shops benefited from
the word of mouth created by all the visitors.
Ristoranti e negozi locali hanno beneficiato
del passaparola creato da tutti i visitatori.
Fagagna is now widely recognised as one of
the most beautiful villages in Italy and it is
very hard not to disagree. Its history dates
back to Roman times as “Feagne” sits on the
Via Concordia which connected Aquileia, the
second largest town after Rome in the second
century BC, to the Alpine pass which
accessed the Roman Empire’s lands in
northern Europe. From the medieval Castle of
Villalta you have a breathtaking view over the
enchanting valley to the south with the Alps
sitting austerely to the north.
Fagagna è ormai ampiamente conosciuta
come uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia ed è
molto difficile non essere d'accordo. La sua
storia risale ai tempi dei Romani; si trova
sulla Via Concordia che collegava Aquileia,
nel II° secolo a.C. la seconda città più grande
dopo Roma, alle terre dell'Impero romano nel
nord Europa, attraverso il valico alpino. Dal
castello medievale della vicina Villalta si ha
una vista mozzafiato sulla incantevole valle a
sud con le Alpi sedute austeramente a nord.

The whole area around Feagne is full of
beautiful little villages – San Daniele (San
Denél), where the famous prosciutto comes
from, is about 6 km away and the whole
area’s local culinary traditions are to die for.
The entire Friuli region specialises in growing
native grape varieties that produce excellent
wines – the dry fruity Friulano, the sweet
Ramandolo, and the uber-exclusive Picolit, to
name just a few white ones. The
Schioppettino and Franconia are two excellent
local red wines. All are made in the famous
wine-making area of the Collio. If you drive
just 15 km south of Feagne, another
enchanting village will let you discover its
history of “Forum Julii” as Julius Caesar
called it, back in 50 BC. It is now known as
Cividale del Friuli or Cividàt in the local language.

Close by is the medieval town of Gorizia,
which – like another European city, Berlin –
was divided in two after a territorial dispute
between Italy and the former Yugoslav
dictator Tito during the Cold War.
L'intera area attorno a Fagagna è piena di bei
paesi. San Daniele (San Denél), da dove
proviene il famoso prosciutto, si trova a circa
6 km di distanza e le tradizioni culinarie locali
sono deliziose. L'intera regione Friuli è
specializzata nella coltivazione di vitigni che
producono ottimi vini (il fruttato Friulano
secco, il dolce Ramandolo e l’esclusivo Picolit
solo per citare qualcuno di quelli bianchi; lo
Schioppettino e il Franconia sono due ottimi
vini rossi). Tutti sono fatti nella famosa zona
vinicola del Collio. Se si va a soli 15 km a est
di Fagagna, un altro incantevole borgo vi
permetterà di scoprire la sua storia di "Forum
Julii", come lo chiamò Giulio Cesare, nel 50
a.C. E' ora noto come Cividale del Friuli o
Cividât nella lingua locale.

Non lontana si trova la città medievale di
Gorizia, che - come un'altra città europea,
Berlino - è stata divisa in due a seguito di una
disputa territoriale tra l'Italia e la Yugoslavia
dell'ex dittatore Tito dopo la seconda guerra
mondiale.

If you feel like having a swim you can travel
a bit further south and reach the beautiful city
of Trieste, with its scenic harbour and old
cafés and the notoriously famous Miramare
castle that was so highly prized by the
Austrian emperors.
Back nearer to the area surrounding Fagagna,
your tour of the villages must include
Spilimbergo (Spilimberc), which, besides its
12th century castle, has the oldest European
school of mosaics; and Udine (Udin), the
region’s capital, with all its bars and shops
lining its beautiful medieval squares. A bit
further north of Feagne is Venzone (Vençon),
which has massive double village walls dating
from the 12th century and the famous
mummies that Napoleon was so keen to see
when he visited the village. Their preservation
is not due to any human intervention but
rather to the particular natural climatic
conditions of the place. Gemona (Glemone) is
another must-see medieval town which,
together with Venzone, became a model
example of the reconstruction and rebirth after
the devastating 1976 earthquake that
destroyed the whole area and killed so many
people.

Se avete voglia di una nuotata si può andare
un po' più a est e raggiungere la splendida
città di Trieste, con il suo suggestivo porto, gli
antichi caffè e il famoso castello di Miramare
che è stato molto apprezzato dagli imperatori
austriaci.
Ritornando nelle vicinanze di Fagagna, il giro
delle località deve includere Spilimbergo
(Spilimberc), che, oltre al suo castello del 12
° secolo, ha la più antica scuola europea di
mosaici; Udine (Udin), capoluogo della
provincia, con tutti i suoi bar e negozi che
circondano le sue belle piazze medievali. Un
po' più a nord di Fagagna è Venzone
(Vençon), circondata da enormi muri in pietra,
borgo risalente al 12 ° secolo con le famose
mummie che Napoleone era così ansioso di
vedere quando ha visitato la località. La loro

Maybe it was this sense of rebirth that
prevailed in the people of Fagagna and the
locals roundabout when they opted to back
the project to reintroduce to the area the birds
they had lost so long ago. Who knows?
Certainly it took a lot of courage to change
the way they did things. They have adapted
the whole environment surrounding the
village for the benefit of the birds. Their effort
has been repaid hugely in terms of their image
and the benefits to their local businesses.

Forse era questo il senso di rinascita che ha
prevalso nel popolo di Fagagna e nella gente
locale, quando hanno scelto di sostenere il
progetto di reintrodurre nella zona le cicogne
che avevano perso tanti anni addietro. Chi lo
sa? Certamente c’è voluto molto coraggio per
cambiare il modo di fare. Hanno adattato
l'ambiente circostante dell'intero villaggio a
beneficio degli uccelli. Il loro sforzo è stato
ripagato enormemente in termini di immagine
e di benefici per le imprese locali.
Pancetta and Salami
Without really meaning to, and without
fanfare or bragging, the villagers of Fagagna
and environs have been practising
permaculture at its most basic level – and
doing it with not a little success, not only for
themselves but for the birds they had set out
to save.
From the thirty permanent pairs roaming free
in the Oasis, in the last 10 years or so, they
have released about 150 storks back into the
wild, including even the original rescued
stork, who sparked off the whole project.
“As soon as the chicks are hatched they are
ringed with a tracking number and out of a
brood of three or four, the smallest one, which
is usually the one at greatest risk of not
surviving, is removed from the nest and raised
by hand; it is looked after like this for three
years until it reaches maturity. Then they
normally stay in the Oasis. But a few set off
for Africa,” explains Gianni Cinello, the
president of the Oasis.
Pancetta e salami
Senza una reale intenzione, e senza fare
chiasso o vantarsi, gli abitanti di Fagagna e
dintorni hanno praticato la permacultura al
suo livello più elementare facendolo con non
poco successo, non solo per loro stessi ma
per gli uccelli, e in economia.
Dalle trenta coppie permanenti in libertà
nell'Oasi, negli ultimi 10 anni sono state
rilasciate libere circa 150 cicogne, tra le quali
anche quella salvata all’inizio, che ha dato il
via all'intero progetto.
"Non appena i pulcini sono nati vengono
inanellati con un numero di tracciabilità e di
una nidiata di tre o quattro, il più piccolo, che
di solito è quello a maggior rischio di
sopravvivenza, viene rimosso dal nido e
allevato manualmente; viene cresciuto per tre
anni fino a quando non raggiunge la maturità.
Poi soggiornano normalmente nell'oasi. Ma
molte partono per l'Africa", spiega Gianni

Ringing the storks is not only useful for
gathering information and studying the
migratory habits of these precious birds but
also to monitor them for disease. The centre
constantly shares its data with other centres
around Europe. Birds from this sanctuary
have been tracked rearing broods in Maribor,
Slovenia, in Austria, and as far away as
Poland.
“Returning them to nature is the most
precious gift we can give them and the fact
some of them feel comfortable enough to
return here, means we`re doing a great job,”
the president adds with a sense of pride, while
never forgetting to praise that extra effort the
volunteers are always willing to put in to the
project.

Il verso delle cicogne, costituito dal tipico
battito del becco, non è utile solo per la
raccolta di informazioni e per studiare le
abitudini migratorie di questi preziosi uccelli,
ma anche per monitorare le malattie. Il centro
condivide costantemente i propri dati con altri
omologhi in Europa. Uccelli provenienti da
questo oasi sono stati rintracciati per aver
nidificato a Maribor, in Slovenia, in Austria, e
nella lontana Polonia.
"Restituendole alla natura è il dono più
prezioso che possiamo dare loro e il fatto
alcune di loro si sentano a loro agio tanto da
tornare qui, significa che stiamo facendo un
grande lavoro", aggiunge il presidente con un
senso di orgoglio, senza mai dimenticare di
lodare lo straordinario impegno che i volontari
sono sempre disposti a mettere nel progetto.

Of course, those two storks who decided to
stop not far from here could never have
foreseen the seed they planted in the local
population, especially when they abandoned
their chicks in the nest. But beyond the actual
facts of this story, what they have achieved
has been to reinstate the awareness that men
and animals can live well together and gain
mutual benefit from each other. The deeprooted traditions and lives of the people of
Feagne can be seen in the local agricultural
museum, “Cjase Cocèl”, a perfect setting to
show visitors how intertwined the people,
animals, and natural ecosystem were and are
around these parts.

Naturalmente quelle due cicogne che hanno
deciso di fermarsi non lontano da qui non
avrebbero mai potuto prevedere il seme che
hanno piantato nella popolazione locale,
soprattutto quando hanno abbandonato i loro
pulcini nel nido. Ma al di là dei fatti reali di
questa storia, quello che loro hanno ottenuto
è stato quello di ripristinare la
consapevolezza che gli uomini e gli animali
possano vivere bene insieme e ottenere un
vantaggio reciproco gli uni dagli altri. Le
tradizioni radicate e la vita della gente di
Feagne può essere vista nel museo agricolo
locale,"Cjase Cocèl", un ambiente ideale per
mostrare ai visitatori come s’intrecciano le
persone, gli animali e come l'ecosistema
naturale erano ed è da queste parti.

Over the years the Oasis Quadris has become
the largest repopulation centre for storks in
Italy. It has now embarked on a new project:
rescuing the black ibis. With only 2000 of
these birds left in the world, it is the centre’s
next big challenge. They have already
succeeded in doubling the number of ibises,
using the same methods they used for the
storks. It appears that the ibis copies the
storks’ behaviour and makes babies too!
Perhaps there is some truth then in the legend
that babies are carried by storks after all.
Well, it seems to be working well for the ibis
at any rate!
Nel corso degli anni l'Oasi Quadris è
diventata il più grande centro di
ripopolamento per cicogne in Italia. Ora ha
intrapreso un nuovo progetto: il salvataggio
dell’ibis nero. Con solo 2.000 di questi uccelli
rimasti al mondo, questa è la prossima
grande sfida del centro. Sono già riusciti a
raddoppiare il numero di ibis, usando gli
stessi metodi utilizzati per le cicogne. Sembra
che l'ibis copi il comportamento delle cicogne
e faccia pure i piccoli! Forse, dopo tutto, c'è
qualcosa di vero allora nella leggenda che i
bambini sono portati dalle cicogne. Ad ogni
modo, sembra funzionare bene per l'ibis!

Joking apart, where there is a will there is
always a way. The people of Feagne have
shown what can be done when you are driven
by an idea. Fiercely independent of other
similar organisations – and determined to
remain so – the upkeep of the site which
houses the birds is only carried out by
volunteers. You do not have to pay to visit the
centre, but donations are welcome. It is only
open to the public at weekends from April to
the end of October so the birds involved in the
repopulation programe are not disturbed too
much by visitors. But you can always see the
rest of them flying around the village at any
time, too.

Scherzi a parte, dove c'è una volontà si trova
sempre un modo. La gente di Fagagna ha
dimostrato cosa si può fare quando si è
guidati da un'idea. Fieramente indipendente
da altre organizzazioni simili - e determinata
a rimanere tale - la manutenzione del sito che
ospita gli uccelli è effettuata solo da volontari.
Non devi pagare per visitare il centro, ma le
offerte sono i benvenute. E' aperto al
pubblico solo nei fine settimana da Aprile a
fine Ottobre così che gli uccelli coinvolti nel
programma di ripopolamento non sono troppo
disturbati dai visitatori. Ma le cicogne si
possono sempre vedere volare in tutto il
paese, in qualsiasi momento
“Great oaks from little acorns grow”, as the
saying goes. And this story is proof positive
that you do not need some archi-star with
some expensive monstrosity to put your
village or town on the map. With ecological
engineering or sustainable design or whatever
you want to call it, the inhabitants of Fagagna
have sent a perfect message to the world: will
power is stronger than big budgets and the
rewards come in so many ways.
We are being constantly bombarded with new
trends, new fashions; well, it is my belief a
real trend setter is the instigator, never the
follower, so there could not be a better
renaissance message for all of us than this
one: “We care, so can you!”
"Grandi querce crescono da piccole ghiande
", come dice il proverbio. E questa storia è la
prova che non hai bisogno di qualche grande
stella con qualche costosa mostruosità per
mettere il vostro paese o la città sulla mappa.
Con ingegneria ecologica o progettazione
sostenibile o come volete chiamarla, gli
abitanti di Fagagna hanno inviato un
messaggio perfetto al mondo: la forza di
volontà è più forte di grandi budget e le
ricompense sono disponibili in tanti modi.
Siamo costantemente bombardati con nuove
tendenze, nuove mode; bene, è mia
convinzione che per dare un vero
incitamento, mai a posteriori, non ci potrebbe
essere un messaggio di rinascita per tutti
migliore di questo: "Vogliamo, allora tu puoi! "
