The ES contemporary art gallery in Merano will present three video pieces by filmmaker and artist
Ede Müller that address the theme of the Disappearance of Places, from May 6th through 28th
in Merano. The gallery will not show these three pieces—shot in Berlin, Istanbul, and the German
village of Hausen am Andelsbach— in its exhibition space but in places that reflect, in turn, the
theme of the exhibition: places that have either lost their original function or that face imminent
demise.

PLACES AND THEIR MOMENT IN TIME
In der Gehrenseestraße in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen besuchen fünf Jugendliche
aus Ex-Jugoslawien das ehemalige Asylbewerberheim, in dem sie gemeinsam ihre
Kindheit verbracht haben. In Sulukule Roman Orchestra beschäftigt sich Müller mit dem
Verschwinden des Roma Viertels Sulukule in Istanbul, das mit seiner über 500-jährigen
Geschichte eine der ältesten Roma-Siedlungen der Welt war. Adlerplatz dokumentiert
den Abriss des leerstehenden Gasthof Adler im oberschwäbischen Heimatdorf des
Filmemachers. Hier war fast 200 Jahre lang der gesellschaftliche Mittelpunkt des Ortes an
den sich viele persönliche Erinnungen knüpfen.
Nella Gehrenseestraße, nel quartiere berlinese di Hohenschönhausen, cinque ragazzi
della ex-Jugoslavia ritornano nell’ex centro di permanenza nel quale hanno passato
insieme la loro infanzia. In Sulukule Roman Orchestra, Müller parla invece della scomparsa
di Sulukule, il quartiere rom di Istanbul che, con i suoi 500 anni di storia, era uno dei più
antichi insediamenti rom al mondo. Adlerplatz documenta la demolizione dell’ormai
disabitato Gasthof Adler, nel paese di origine dell’autore nella Svevia superiore. La
locanda è stata per quasi 200 anni il centro della vita sociale del posto, nonché luogo al
quale sono legati tanti ricordi personali.
In Gehrenseestraße, five young people from ex-Yugoslavia visit the former refugee center
where they spent their childhood together in Berlin’s borough of Hohenschönhausen. In
Sulukule Roman Orchestra, Müller addresses the disappearance of the Roma quarter of

The Exhibition Spaces
Die Ausstellung ist diesmal nicht in den Räumen der Galerie selbst zu sehen, sondern,
analog zum Thema der Filme, an Orten die ihrerseits „verschwunden sind“ beziehungsweise
deren Verschwinden unmittelbar bevor steht: Den Auftakt macht eine Vorführung aller
drei Filme mit Einführung und anschließendem Publikumsgespräch im Bauhof Meran
in der Goethestraße. Das dreigeschossige Jugendstilgebäude aus dem Jahr 1909
beherbergt seit über 100 Jahren verschiedene Handwerksbetriebe und Lagerräume der
Gemeinde Meran. 2012 soll er abgerissen werden, da über das Gelände die Zuleitung
zum Küchelbergtunnel führen wird. Für die Dauer der anschließenden Ausstellung werden
die Filmarbeiten in drei leerstehenden Räumen jenes Laubenhauses gezeigt, in dem bis
in die 30er Jahre das älteste und größte Kaffeehaus Merans seinen Platz hatte: Das Café
Paris. Die ausdrucksstarken Videoarbeiten von Ede Müller beschäftigen sich in leisen
Tönen mit Orten und ihren emotionalen, persönlichen Qualitäten. Eine zusätzliche Ebene
gewinnt das Ausstellungsprojekt durch die besonderen, normalerweise unzugänglichen,
verborgenen Räume, an denen die Filme in den drei Wochen gezeigt werden. Dieser
bewusst geschaffene lokale Bezug soll zu einer ebenso allgemeinen wie ortsbezogenen
Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik einladen.
L’esposizione non sarà questa volta visitabile nelle sale della galleria, ma, analogamente
al tema del film, in luoghi che “sono scomparsi” o la cui scomparsa è imminente. La
serata di apertura verranno proiettati i tre film (preceduti da una introduzione) e al
termine della visione è previsto un momento di dialogo con il pubblico; la proiezione
si svolgerà nel Cantiere comunale di Merano in via Goethe. L’edificio a tre piani in
stile liberty del 1909 ospita da più di 100 anni diverse aziende artigiane e spazi adibiti a
magazzino della comunità di Merano. Il suo abbattimento è previsto per il 2012, perché
proprio qui passerà la strada che porta al tunnel del Monte di Merano. A partire dal 7

Paris. In his expressive video pieces, Ede Müller uses muted tones to address specific
places and the qualities they possess—on an emotional as well as personal level. The
project is deepened by its special use of normally inaccessible, hidden spaces as venues
for the three-week-long exhibition of the films. This consciously creates a local reference
point for the topic, which opens up a location-based discussion as well as a general one.

Fünf Jugendliche aus Ex-Jugoslawien besuchen ihr ehemaliges Asylbewerberheim in
Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, in dem sie gemeinsam ihre Kindheit verbracht haben. Sie sind
sozial aufgestiegen und leben heute in eigenen Wohnungen, erinnern sich aber gerne
an die Zeit im Heim zurück: “Wenn es so wäre wie damals, würde ich sofort zurückziehen.”
Der Plattenbaukomplex steht jedoch seit Jahren leer und soll demnächst abgerissen
werden.

momenti passati nel centro di permanenza: “Se potesse essere tutto come allora, ci
tornerei subito”. L’edificio è disabitato da anni e presto verrà demolito.
Five adolescents from former Yugoslavia visit their former home for asylum seekers in the
Hohenschönhausen district of Berlin, where they spent their childhood together. They
have made their transition into German society and today live in their own apartments.
But they still fondly reflect on the time they spent in the home: “If things were as they
were then, I would move straight back there.” The prefabricated building has been
abandoned for years, though, and is slated to be demolished soon.

Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Verschwinden des Roma Viertels Sulukule in Istanbul,
das mit seiner über 500-jährigen Geschichte eine der ältesten Roma-Siedlungen der
Welt war. Gegen den Widerstand der Bewohner und gegen internationalen Protest
von Organisationen wie der UNESCO und der OSZE wurde das Viertel seit 2006 Stück für
Stück abgerissen. Das letzte Haus fiel im November 2009. Die Bewohner wurden in eine
Hochhaussiedlung umgesiedelt, die sich 40km vor den Toren der Stadt befindet. An der
Stelle des ehemaligen Amüsier-Viertels der Roma, das heute im Zentrium von Istanbul
liegt, sollen nun begrünte Luxusresidenzen entstehen.
In questo video si parla del quartiere rom di Istanbul che, con i suoi 500 anni di storia,
era uno dei più antichi insediamenti rom al mondo. Nonostante gli abitanti vi abbiano
opposto resistenza e incuranti della protesta da parte di organizzazioni internazionali
come l’UNESCO e dell’OSCE, il quartiere è stato smantellato pezzo per pezzo. L’ultimo
edificio è stato abbattuto nel novembre 2009, mentre gli abitanti sono stati trasferiti in
un quartiere di condomini popolari a 40 Km dalla città. Al centro della città, dove prima
sorgeva il vivace quartiere rom, verranno costruite residenze di lusso immerse nel verde.
For more than 500 years, the Sulukule Roma quarter of Istanbul was home to one of the
oldest Roma communities in the world. Despite strong resistance, the quarter was razed
to the ground between 2006 to 2009. Residents were forced to accept resettlement
terms. They were moved into new housing projects some 40 kilometers outside of Istanbul.
The Sululukle Roma Orchestra was founded in 2006 as a form of protest against the urban
renewal. The orchestra’s aim is to keep the Roma culture alive in the community, despite

In meiner oberschwäbischen Heimatgemeinde wurde im Frühjahr 2010 der Gasthof Adler
von der Gemeinde gekauft abgerissen. Der Adler war fast 200 Jahre lang der Mittelpunkt
des Dorfes, stand allerdings schon seit einigen Jahren leer. Die Verwaisung der Dorfmitten
aufgrund von Leerstand ist ein Problem, das viele kleine Ortschaften kennen, nicht nur im
Schwabenland.
Der Film wurde während der Abrissarbeiten gedreht. Viele Dorfbewohner beobachten
wie das Zentrum ihrer Gemeinde verschwindet und äussern sich zu dem Geschehen.
Es entsteht das Portrait einer kleinen Dorfgemeinschaft, die sich mit dem Lauf der Zeit
auseinander setzen muss.
Nella primavera 2010, nel mio paese di origine nella Svevia superiore, il Gasthof Adler
dopo essere stato acquistato dalla comunità, è stato abbattuto. La locanda Adler è
stata per quasi 200 anni il centro della vita sociale del paese, ma già da anni era vuota.
L’abbandono dei paesi e la presenza di un numero sempre maggiore di edifici vuoti
nei piccoli centri urbani, è un problema che non riguarda solo la Svevia. Il film è stato
girato durante l’abbattimento della locanda. Molti abitanti stanno a guardare come il
centro della loro comunità scompare e commentano quello che sta succedendo. Ne
esce il ritratto di una piccola comunità di paese che deve confrontarsi con il passare del
tempo.
The municipal government of my home town in Upper Swabia bought Gasthof Adler
and demolished it in the spring of 2010. The inn had been the epicentre of the village
for almost 200 years, but had already been empty for some time. The abandonment of
