A square bar of the desired size is chosen. The last 2 inches are heated (photo 1). Then with a power or hand hammer a pyramid shape is made at the end, making sure that the four opposite sides are hammered alternatively (photo 2). The result can be seen in photo 3. To finish the job the end of the bar is heated again, but this time only two opposite sides are hammered, beginning just a couple inches below the pyramid shape (photo. Photo 3 Photo 4 After having heated the area to be worked on (photo 1) it must be hammered continuously to make it square (photo 2), making sure that the opposite sides are hammered alternatively. One end is then held in a vise and the other end is twisted completely around (360 degrees) from the opposite end using an adjustable wrench. The final result is seen in photo 4. 13 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE AA.VV. 18 Photo 7 Photo 10 Photo 5 shows the progress up until this point. Now the iron is heated again until it becomes bright red. Using a concave swage, a curve is gently given to it using a ball peen hammer (photos 6-7). To finish the curve a template of the scroll is used (photos 8-9). The last step involves bringing the point back into its original position, bending it back again. Of course, the iron must be very hot for each step in this project. Photo 5 This decoration will be put in the center of a 45/64 inch thick pole. Work is begun with two pieces of 1/8” thick sheet metal and a 3/32” half round. The exact measurements to use are shown in mm. in photo 1. The work is begun by welding the first sheet to the rod, heating it with the flame and wrapping it around. The same is done with the second sheet (photos 2-3), and with the half round (photo 4). Photo 5 shows the finished product. Work is begun with a 1/8” piece of sheet metal which has been laser cut into an octagonal shape with the edges rounded out as shown in photo 1. A marking pen is used to draw the 4 diagonals (photo 2) and a sharp chisel is used to make grooves along the lines without going completely to the center of the octagon (photo 3). The next step is to anneal the metal to soften it and give it an attractive irregular coloration (photo 4). 65 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE PORTA LAMPADE LAMPHOLDER Photo 8 Photo 7 Photo 9 Photo 10 Poggiandosi ora sullo spigolo di un piano di metallo, si arrotondano le curve dei singoli sepali (photo 7). Photo 11 The object is now placed on the edge of a metal surface and the curves of the individual sepals are rounded (photo 7). The last phase of this step involves closing the object into a flower-cup using the press and a simple punch as shown in photo 8 with the object placed on a rubber mat. The last part, the calyx, is made starting with the shape in photo 9, on which the same procedure used on the sepals is repeated (photo 10). A hammer and the anvil’s horn are used for the finishing touches (photo 11). 91 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE ROSA DA FERRO PIATTO ROSE FROM A FLAT IRON BAR Realizzazione di una rosa da ferro piatto Making a Rose from a Flat Iron Bar Stefano Fagioli - Cesena e Giovanni Piccolo - S.Lucia del Mela (Me) Nell’acqua, in un prato, sulla sabbia e nel cielo stellato è scritto un destino che il vento, l’alba e il sole non vogliono farci leggere Stefano Fagioli In the water, in a field, on the sand, and in the star filled sky our destiny is written but the wind, the dawn, and the sun won’t let us read it Stefano Fagioli 115 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE ROSA DA FERRO PIATTO ROSE FROM A FLAT IRON BAR Photo 5 Photo 6 Photo 7 Photo 8 Affinché ogni petalo assuma una forma naturale, è necessario che l’ope- So as to give the smith the necessary space to work on each petal without ratore abbia un buon campo di lavoro, e quindi iniziando dall'estremità, having the adjacent petals get in the way, they are bent away (photos 5i petali vengono man mano ripiegati su se stessi, allo scopo di non esse- 6-7-8). Its wings have been given the desired shape as described on the previous page. 157 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE MATTEAZZI TIZIANO Photo 44 In queste pagine si possono vedere delle opere realizzate sempre dal M. Tiziano Matteazzi, partendo da un lingotto di “Damasco”. Photo 43 160 On these pages are various objects made by master smith Tiziano Matteazzi using Damascus steel. The mythological symbol of the dragon has, from the earliest times, captured the imagination of artists and ordinary people alike. Modern smiths have not escaped from this fascination with the mythological beast and continue to represent it in various ways. On the following pages are the various steps in the creation of a dragon’s head as the artist Simone Fersino imagines it. 171 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE DRAGO SU FERRO QUADRO DRAGON'S HEAD FROM A SQUARE BAR Photo 14 In realtà, sono stati qui spiegati in maniera sintetica e schematica dei procedimenti lunghi quasi due ore; per arrivare al risultato in photo 14, occorre un lento e laborioso lavoro di ceselli, punzoni e martello che, agendo sul ferro rovente (circa 1.000° C), lo plasmano secondo la volontà dell'artista. The above steps were explained briefly while, in reality, it took almost two hours for an experienced artist-blacksmith to achieve the result seen in photo 14. It is a long, hard, and detailed job entailing the use of chisels, punches, and hammers while working on iron heated to 1800° F. To obtain satisfactory results you need to have some talent and some experience. A robust brushing is now done with a brass brush to clean off the calamine and to give the object a slightly golden color (photo 28). Now the horns are worked on. The artist, seen in photo 29, decided to curl them like rams’ horns (photo 30). 179 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE DRAGO SU FERRO QUADRO DRAGON'S HEAD FROM A SQUARE BAR Photo 44 183 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE NUDO NUDE Realizzazione di un nudo Making a Nude Mario Converio - Schio (Vi) Il nudo è stato da sempre l'argomento che maggiormente ha coinvolto la fantasia del genere umano. The nude figure has always captured the fantasy of human-kind. Mario Converio, criss-crossing the boundaries between reality and fantasy, using fine lines with heavy material, celebrate feminine beauty with the strongly contrasting materials he uses for his work. This award winning, world-famous artist, with great generosity, wants to share his techniques developed over many years of work and explain them in simple terms to a new generation, so they can improve them and personalize them. 185 I SEGRETI DELLA FORGIA - SECRETS OF THE FORGE CONVERIO MARIO Photo 18 Photo 19 Photo 20 Photo 21 Si passa ora alla parte superiore, iniziando dal seno. 190 The next step is to form the breasts. With the hollow circular tool seen in photo 18, and a hammer with a spherical peen, the initial shape of the breasts is made (photo 19). The tool used to form the backbone, and to round out the body is seen in photo 20. In photo 21 the procedure previously mentioned is illustrated. Quest'ultima operazione serve a conferire all'opera una particolare colorazione. In photo 49 the finished nude poses for the first time for the photographer. A finishing treatment is now prepared by diluting muriatic acid by 50% in water and then covering the whole surface in this solution for 2 days. Then the metal is thoroughly washed off in running water, vigorously brushed, dried, and protected with boiled linseed oil. This gives the work a particular color. Ora, bisogna solo dare maggior durezza al congegno, temprandolo all'olio. In photo 45 an arrow points out the part of the spring which, once given the right shape, will block the latch from moving. Only opening the lock with a key will allow the latch to work. The edge of the anvil is used to make a right angle. This tooth will be necessary for opening and closing the lock (photo 46). The last stage is giving the spring its definitive shape (photo 47). In photo 48 the exact point it will be attached is seen. The arrow in the photo indicates the point where, when the key is turned, the spring will be lifted thus allowing the latch to move. Now the mechanism must be tempered with oil to make it more robust. The last step is to use a punch on the end of the latch which will prevent it from coming out of the guide (photo 62). The punches used by this master smith can be found on Google, and purchased in the UK and USA looking under “Alfa Punch” on Google.
