Academic Curriculum
Prof. Gronchi started his academic career in 1972 at the Economics Department
of Siena University, where he held the following positions: Assistant Lecturer in
Economics, Assistant Lecturer in Econometrics, Associate Lecturer in Economics and
Temporary Lecturer in Econometrics.
As part of University of Siena’s cultural exchange programme with Cambridge
University, he was a visiting scholar at King’s College Cambridge (1973); CNRNATO visiting scholar at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER),
University of York (1974-75) and British Academy-Wolfson Fellow (1976-77).
In 1985, Prof. Gronchi won a public competition for a professorship at ‘La
Sapienza’ - University of Rome, where he was a member of the Department of
Economic Science, teaching Economics in the Faculty of Teacher Training and the
Faculty of Social Science. In 1997, he moved into the Department of Economic
Theory and Quantitative Methods, which later joined the Department of Social
Science generating a new Department of Social and Economic Science. Since then he
has taught Economics, Welfare Economics and Econometrics in the Faculty of
Political Science.
From 1997 to 2001, he was coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in
Economics and Institutions.
From 2001 to 2006, he taught Economics of Social Security for the Public
Economics Master’s course at the Faculty of Economics.
From July 2002 to March 2006, Prof. Gronchi was lecturer of economics at the
governmental School of Economics and Finance.

Research Interests
Up to 1985, Prof. Gronchi’s main research interests were general equilibrium,
econometric methods and capital theory. Since 1985, his research has concentrated on
the economic consequences of demographic change, overlapping generations,
generational accounting and fairness and sustainability of pension systems.
Specifically, he has developed econometric models for the long - term projection of
social security expenditure and contributed to the theoretical basis for the NDC
(notional defined contributions) pay-as-you go scheme, now part of Italian social
security legislation. He has also worked on supplementary pension schemes,
co-ordinating a national research group on this topic, financed by the Italian Ministry
for University and Research.
In the period 1997-2000, he also worked on labour costs, wages and
productivity, production techniques and labour requirements in the Italian banking
sector. He drew up the guidelines for the ‘Solidarity Fund’, subsequently established
by the Italian Government. From 1999 to 2000, he also worked on labour costs,
efficiency and competitiveness in European railway networks.
At present, he is working on the effects of increasing longevity on NDC pension
schemes sustainability.

State General Accounts Office with the task of developing and managing

• Consultant to Mediocredito Centrale on appointment by the General Director
of the Treasury (Prof. Draghi) for labour cost and supplementary pension

• Member of the panel of experts (with Prof. Accornero and Prof. Prosperetti)
set up by the Minister for Transport (Prof. Treu) and the Minister for the
Economy (Prof. Amato) to lower labour cost in the Italian national railway
network (1999-2000).
