Il portale e il sagrato della Chiesa Madre The portal and the parvis of the Parish Church In 1183 it became a feudal territory of the Bishopric of Monreale and, after having undergone the Swabian,Angevin and Aragonese dominations,in the sixteenth century it was certainly the residence of noble families,so much so to be called Nobilis Universitas. 27 GUIDA AI COMUNI - BISACQUINO A destra,Immacolata di Gioacchino Martorana (olio su tela sec.XVIII)- Chiesa Madre Right,Immacolata by Gioacchino Martorana (oil on canvas 19th century) - Parish Church Festeggiamenti a Bisacquino Feast in Bisacquino Museo Diffuso di arti figurative dell’Alto Belice Corleonese Diffused Museum of Figurative Arts of Alto Belice Corleonese www.mirabileartificio.it 28 COMMUNES GUIDE Altra torre particolare è quella di San Things to see Francesco d’Assisi (XVI secolo), nell’omoThe Parish Church, built in 1713 on the site nima piazza: la sua forma triangolare è on which the sixteenth-century parish church rarissima in tutta Europa. stood,is dedicated to St.John the Baptist and Da visitare sono anche la Chiesa Maria SS. – in Piazza Triona – looks out upon on a del Rosario,in via XXIV Maggio,di origine beautiful parvis in which you can see the coatcinquecentesca ma rimaneggiata in epoca of-arms of the village done in mosaic fashion barocca quando vennero realizzati gli stuc- with coloured ashlars. The nave and two aisles inside are rich in gilded stuccoes plasters typichi,e la chiesa secentesca dedicata alla Madonna del Carmine,in via del Carmi- cal of the eighteenth century, among which the beautiful work at the transept attributed to ne,con la bella tela del 1851 raffigurante an artist of the Serpotta school. l’Annunciazione del pittore palermitano Giuseppe Carta.Inoltre,ai percorsi del In the church you can admire the works insertMuseo Diffuso di arti figurative appartened in the Diffused Museum of Figurative gono il gruppo scultoreo del San Giuseppe Arts of Alto Belice Corleonese. con Bambino Gesù,in legno policromo e dorato del XVII secolo; il Profeta Eliseo, sta- There are pictures of The Madonna of Graces, tua in legno policromo e dorato del XVII by an unknown artist, dating from the 18th century, and the coeval one of The Madonna of secolo, e il Profeta Elia, coeva statua in Providence, also by an unknown artist. legno policromo e dorato. Another particular tower is that of St.Francis of Assisi (16th century),in the piazza of the same name:its triangular shape is rare in Europe. Also worth visiting is the Maria Santissima del Rosario Church,in Via XXIV Maggio,of sixteenth-century origin but redone in the Baroque epoch, when the stuccoes were done, and the seventeenth-century church dedicated to the Madonna of the Carmine,in Via del Carmine, with a beautiful 1851 canvas depicting the Annunciation,by the Palermo painter Giuseppe Carta. The pathways of the Diffused Museum of figurative arts also include the sculptural group of St.Joseph with Baby Jesus, in polychrome and gilded wood from the 17th century; The Prophet Elisha,a statue in polychrome and gilded wood from the 17th century, and The Prophet Elijah,a coeval statue in polychrome and gilded wood. Of major religious importance is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Balzo, up on Monte Triona almost 1,000 metres above sea level. The church,to which a hermitage is attached,is a destination of pilgrims who go to pray before the image of The Madonna with Child,a painted sculpture in high relief, kept in the marble aedicule at the high altar. From the parvis of the church you can admire a breathtaking panorama. The road continues up to the picnic area in Contrada Cervi. From here, you can go on foot to the area of the snow-trenches,natu- COMMUNES GUIDE Bisacquino ha due musei. Bisacquino has two museums. The most original is certainly the Clock Museum, where there are examples of the handicraft tradition of the Scibetta family, clockmakers from the eighteenth century down to the 1980s.But the Scibettas were not common clockmakers, but experts in the manufacture of tower clocks:for this reason in the museum you can also admire the Universal Geographical clock that synchronizes the Italian time area with the most important time areas in the world. On display there are also all the tools and utensils that gave fame to this family, also called on by the director Luchino Visconti during the making of the film The Leopard. In the former monastery of the Capuchin monks in Via Orsini there is the Civic Museum,on two levels,in which have there been reproduced with original objects the typical workplaces still in use until the last century. Thus, room after room, you enter places in which there have been reconstructed the work Oggetti di vita contadina al Museo Civico Objects of rural life at the Civic Museum Museo dell’Orologio Clock Museum Corso Umberto, 76 Fondazione Museo Civico Civic Museum Foundation Via Orsini tel. Carnival A nice feast is represented by the carnival, which has gone on since the end of the 17th century.A peculiarity is the mask of the domino,a dark tunic, which covers a person from head to toe. Beginning from the fifties, the figure of a puppet was also inserted,“u Zupiddu.”Another particular element of this carnival is the role that the woman takes on:she is the protagonist,so much so that – overturning the old roles of masculine supremacy – it is she that invites the man to dance. tadini è illustrata dagli utensili e dagli attrezzi utilizzati. 32 environments of the weaver,of the pasta maker and the barber,as well as those of the blacksmith or the cobbler. The life of farmers is illustrated by the utensils and tools used. The archaeological collection brings together Greek-Punic finds from the 5th-4th centuries BC and Hellenistic ones. Things to buy Bisacquino also boasts some other “good”traditions. Here excellent vegetable preserves are made, both ones in oil and ones based on sauces;and then in this area the Busacchinara onion is cultivated,a round and squashed vegetable,of an intense red colour, which when ripe becomes purple. It has a sweet taste and soft consistency.A feast is dedicated to this vegetable in the middle of August. It is commonly found in fruit and vegetable shops, but can also be purchased from producers in the area.
