Iranian ceramic industry sees slowdown Majid Mohassesian - Ceramic World Review Persian (Tehran, Iran) economics Iran, industria ceramica in affanno Between 2006 and 2011 Iran’s population grew by 7% to reach 75 million inhabitants. Over the same period, GDP rose from US $242 billion to the all-time high of $576 billion, an increase of 138% (source: World Bank), and per capita tile consumption more than doubled from 2.58 to 5.25 square metres. But although this five-year period of powerful economic growth brought a big improvement in the well-being and standard of living of the population, it was followed by three years of steady decline. As a result, GDP fell back to $415 billion in 2014, below the levels of 2010. World Bank forecasts for the period 2015-2020 point to a moderate recovery (GDP should reach $480 billion in 2020). The construction industry Il settore delle costruzioni Although the economic downturn had already begun by the second quarter of 2012, the adverse effects on the construction industry did not make themselves felt until 2014. In that year, the number of building permits plummeted by 39.5% from 223,000 to 135,000 (the parameter of “built area” followed a similar decline), after remaining stable in 2012 and 2013 at the high levels of previous years (Table 1). According to various estimates, the number of building permits has continued to fall in 2015. In the city of Tehran alone, the first quarter figures show a 24% fall over the first quarter of 2014 and a 63% drop over the same period in 2013. Real estate prices experienced strong growth up until 2013, but slackened in 2014 and are expected to fall this year. The use of more modern technologies has raised production capacity and improved product quality, opening up opportunities for exports. Accordi to the Iranian Ministry of Industry, total installed production capacity currently stands at around 700 million sq.m/year, with around 133 manufacturing units in operation (out of 170 existing facilities). More than half of these are located in the Yazd district and the others are spread out across the country. According to the Iranian Ceramic Syndicate, domestic tile consumption started to decline in 2012-2013, while local tile production remained high, also boosted by the increase in exports, mostly to Iraq. This was followed in 2014 by a sharp and sudden decline in the tile industry and market, in line with the performance of the construction industry and the burst of the housing bubble. Domestic sales plummeted by 43% from 350 to 200 million sq.m, exports fell slightly to 110 million sq.m (-3.5%), and although output dropped by 18% from 500 to 410 million sq.m it remained well above demand. As a result, stocks reached 100 million sq.m in 2014. From the production figures for the first quarter of 2015 and the analysis of domestic and export market trends, it appears possible that output volumes and domestic consumption may experience a further decline in the current year. A recovery in exports is even more likely (they are estimated at about 120 million sq.m. in 2015) following strong progress in the first quarter of this year in Iraq, Afghanistan and some markets in the CIS area. Export growth appears to be the only short-term solution for overcoming the crisis.
