This sound is not only a horrible noise, but unfortunately it tells me it’s Monday morning – the day all kids hate, the day which starts the new school week. I’m in my bed, all curled up. My long curly red hair is covering my eyes. I don’t have the strength to get up and switch off that awful object which seems so far from me but actually isn’t. I’m trying to ignore it. I try to use my fluffy pillow to block that terrible noise from reaching my poor naked ears. The alarm suddenly stops ringing. It seems like a miracle setting my mind at ease. I smell something that provokes me, a mouth-watering smell which makes me get out of my bed. I go to the kitchen and see my sister making an apple pie, my favourite dessert. She smiles at me, showing her white cutely crooked teeth. Strangely today she isn’t wearing her glasses. “Where are your glasses?” I ask. “I’m wearing my contacts. Today is a special day.” she answers, rolling her green eyes. “School is cancelled.” “Why?” “The school building has to be sanitized.” I let out all my joy with a shout of happiness. My sister laughs and offers me a piece of pie. My phone starts ringing while I’m eating. It’s my friend Mark. “Hey, Mark! What’s up?” “Have you heard the news? There’s no school today!” “Yeah! What are we gonna do?” “We have to meet with the others to celebrate.” “Where?” “Billy’s house.” “Great! I’ll get myself ready and get there on my scooter.” “OK. See you there!” When I arrive, everyone is already there. They are organizing a football match in the big field in front of the house. We make the two goals using our jackets to mark where the poles should be. Jack and I are chosen to be the captains. Then we start playing. The match is really tough because there is a bet: the losing team will have to dive in the disgusting dirty river of the town. Then the match becomes tense when the score is tied 3-3. The game is about to finish when from midfield John strikes a perfect shot the goalkeeper doesn’t 3 expect. When I see the ball go inside, I’m furious. The thought that I have to jump inside that cesspool makes my mind go out of control. Impulsively, I kick the ball as hard as I can, with all my anger. Everyone looks at it as it is in the midair until it reaches the ground and bounces into an open manhole. All my friends look at me angrily, especially Bob because the ball is his and it’s also the one used during the Champions League final when Chelsea won, and he’s a big Chelsea fan. I know I have done the wrong thing, so I tell my friends I will go and look for the football. I run towards the manhole. I need to find that ball. If I don’t I’ll probably risk losing my friends. I go inside the manhole that brings me into the sewer. I’m scared to death and I’m tempted to go back up. Then I think of my friends’ disappointed faces staring at me. My heart starts beating faster and faster and my head seems to explode out of fear. It’s really dark down here and there’s a horrible smell. I light my way with my cell phone and I start to follow the stream of water until I suddenly see the ball. I’m happy to see it because the sooner I get it, the faster I’ll get out of this terrifying place. When I’m about to pick up the ball, I hear some strange noises which give me goose bumps. I see some shadows coming towards me. They are just a step away from me and I start shaking from fear. I can see its face lit by my phone. This gruesome creature has a face full of scars with three horns on its forehead. A part of its brain is visible, with worms going back and forth through it. Its 4 teeth are sharp, with spots of fresh blood. Its ears are pointy and full of pustules, its eyes are red like fire with veins which seem going to explode at any moment. I have never seen something as dreadful as this, not even in the scariest horror movie. I feel paralyzed, it’s worse than any nightmare I’ve ever had. My mobile falls off my hand, out of shock. All I can think of is this horrible face. The creature grabs me and pulls me near him until I can smell its bad breath. “You are the cause of our misery.” he hisses in my ear. “We are forced to live hidden in the darkness of the sewers, otherwise you humans would wipe us out!” he adds furiously. The creature drags me inside a door which leads us to a huge cave. There are lots of them there, thousands of them. When they discover I’m human, they start screaming out of wrath and stomping their feet on the ground. It seems like an earthquake. The ground is trembling so hard that the cave seems about to fall apart. They keep shouting! For a little while, the awful sound reminds me the noise of my alarm clock – for once, I really want to hear it! I squint my eyes and open them again … it’s on my right, THERE IT IS … ringing! 5 by Cristina Canzoniere, Sara Crespi, Arianna Di Cicco, Giulia Marchiori, Margherita Marinelli “It’s so exciting to be a model”, they told her. But having everybody's eyes on every day wasn’t for her; she was shy, she was embarrassed with nothing. She went out from behind the backstage, and found herself strolling on the long catwalk, under the dazzling lights. It was there he saw her for the first time. When Christian, while taking a picture of her at the end of the catwalk, met her eyes he knew what was happening: love at first sight. He couldn’t stop looking at her, his heart pounding fast. No matter what it took, he wanted to see her again. He asked his friend Justin, a photographer too, to help him into the next fashion show, where Chloe would take part. After the show the boy asked her for a date; she wasn’t sure to accept the invitation, but in the end she said yes. They were in the coolest restaurant in Paris, when Chloe saw her boyfriend Pierre - he was the reason why she didn’t want to accept - with another girl, a known face... her name was Chantal, and they were probably holding hands. He saw her; she was angry and started shouting how horrible was his behaviour. Christian decided to make them stop. He took the girl away from the restaurant. ****** It was six in the morning when four police cars arrived under the Eiffel Tower. A young girl, slim with long dark hair had been found in a pool of blood. Immediately, all the few people Chloe knew in Paris were called at the police station. Pierre was the first. He was interrogated for a long time; the police had doubts about him because he knew that his girlfriend had a date with another guy. The French said that he was innocent; he had passed all night with Chantal, his new girlfriend. She confirmed the alibi. Chantal, competent in the fashion world, was able to say the name of the guy who was with Chloe: the emerging English photographer known as Christian. He was called and he was interrogated. He said that after dinner he wanted to calm the girl, sad because of what had happened early before in the restaurant with her boyfriend Pierre, then he had brought her back to the hotel. Apparently, the police were on the wrong track. They searched the girl’s room, desperately looking for some proof, they also talked to her parents just arrived from Brighton to know if there were some reasons for her to commit suicide. Still no proof at all. 6 Superintendent Clark decided to take a look at all the videos from the security cameras of the hotel in a final attempt to find the murderer. There was no track of Chloe going back to the hotel that night. Christian had to be interrogated for a second time because he had lied. He gave in. He admitted that he had brought Chloe to the Eiffel Tower, but he claimed that after a small argument he had gone away leaving her alone. Alone, except for another man he had met on his way. It was Pierre, he was sure. Pierre was interrogated for the second time too. He kept on saying he never went to the Tower. He swore he could never do such a thing. A man, the night guardian of the Tower, decided to speak. He had been threatened by Christian; he said that he would have been killed if he had told about what had happened that night. The man hadn’t seen anything but he had heard a fight, then a scream, silence and a thud. The police went to the photographer’s home; he tried to escape but then he was arrested. He confessed the motive: she had refused him. He couldn’t stand not to be loved back; in a fury, he had thrown her beyond the parapet. 7 by Giorgia Cuminetti, David Di Cave, Tiago Felicetti, Niccolò Moroni On the top of the hill, the deep night was really hot and muggy. In the huge, blue sky the stars were shining alone. The moon was lighting the wet grass, stirred by a light breeze, and the bushes were shaken by the wind. This sound created a pleasant atmosphere. He was lying on the grass, looking at the view. Jason saw the dark outline of the cotton fields, far away, thinking about the hard and harrowing day he had spent. The rumble of a gun. The whistle of a bullet. He saw himself running through the fields, panting, pursued by the fast landlord and sheriff Johnson's flunkeys. 8 The hard work, the lashes by owner Wellington and the tormenting sun on his black skin were only a far away remembrance. While he was running, suddenly everything became silent and the rustle of his chasers vanished. He decided to hide behind a bush, looking around breathless. The silence was only broken by his gasping and the caw of a crow flying off. He heard a swish behind him and suddenly he was on the ground, overhung by the figure of Mr. Wellington. Jason levered Mr. Wellington up and managed to let him fall down on the hot ground, but when he tried to run away the master grabbed his leg. In a final effort, Jason freed himself and could run away. He was a free man, at last. He was running fast thanks to his quick stride. The cotton plants were hitting his scratched legs and arms, but he didn't mind it. Now his life completely belonged to himself. He felt euphoric; it was the first time he was doing something for himself and not for someone else. While these thoughts were filling his mind, he saw a hill - in the distance. 9 by Irene Anello, Bianca Cortese, Andrea Manna, Valeria Marrazza, Alessandro Zanotti Smith had just returned home from the gym; he looked at himself into the mirror satisfied, proud of all the hours spent working out. He was tall, well-built and with a fascinating glance which any girl could not ignore. Only the time to have a shower: that evening at nine he had to stay at the pub for the usual beer in the usual company. He arrived there late as always and when he got into the crowded pub his friends were already sitting down, waiting for him. Jess stared at him with her big blue eyes and her look seemed to tell him off for being late; Nick didn't even greet him because he was too busy in a conversation with a guy never seen before. The new boy was thin and redheaded with green deep eyes. Who was he? Smith joined the group: “Hey guys, what's up? Today I'm feeling really fit! Nick, have you seen how nice is that blonde girl?!” he said winking at a girl at the pub counter. Jess laughed amused: “You never change!” On the contrary, Nick seemed annoyed: “Don't you see there's a new person with us? You could at least introduce yourself!” Smith apologized and introduced himself to the stranger. His name was Winston and he didn't look comfortable in the confusion of the pub. The atmosphere became embarrassing. Jess tried more than once to break the ice; normally she used to succeed thanks to her big smiles and sociable modes but this time she failed because of Winston’s unresponsive behaviour; he turned again to talk to Nick. Jess didn't loose hope and suggested to dance, but only Smith stood up enthusiastic and followed her to the dance floor, while Nick stayed with Winston, who didn't want to leave the table. While dancing, Jess and Smith talked to each other about the new dude: “What is this guy doing with Nick? He looks very hostile!” said Smith. “You're right. It's not Nick’s way to invite people without telling us.” The evening ended with a cold “goodbye”. Jess and Smith took a road different from the others; on the way home, it started to rain. Day by day Winston invaded the three friends' lives more and more: he was always with them at the pub and during the lazy afternoons at home. But the time spent together didn't improve their relationship; rather, in Jess and Smith the aversion to Winston increased, especially because Nick seemed all dedicated to his new friend leaving them aside. What’s more, Nick’s sensitive character pointed out – to his rage - Jess and Smith's aversion to Nick. Their incomprehension grew day after day and they kept all their feelings inside. This way, a tense and gloomy period started, which 10 became so intense and unbearable that in the middle of a night their bad feelings came alive in their shadows. There was such resentment into their hearts that those shadows felt the need to level with each other. They met in front of the pub, where everything had started, and they began quarreling: Smith and Jess brought out all their frustration and rage against Winston. Nick took Winston's side shouting them that they couldn't judge someone by appearances and that they had to try and know him better. In turn, Smith and Jess accused Nick to ignore them, letting a third person influence and destroy their friendship. Winston’s shadow tried to defend Nick saying that he had no fault at all and that, unlike them, he was a really good friend. “If you really take care of us you have to show it, leaving Winston!” said Smith shouting in Nick's face. “You know I can't choose!!” It was as if Nick’s sweetness, Jess’s vivacity and Smith’s happiness had gone, leaving place to the malice of words and the cruelty of gestures. It didn't take so much time to resort to violence. Suddenly, Jess’s shadow pounced on Winston’s in a fury... That moment, in four different houses, our four real characters woke up out of the blue and felt something had changed inside them: they perceived the impulse to go down the street. 11 They walked in the night along the river shore until they met under the Forth Road Bridge. They looked in each other’s eyes and understood that that was the right moment to talk about all the things they had kept hidden inside them for such a long time. They sat down on the river shore, with their gaze lost in the dark waters... the words came out from their mouths like a stream in flood, at last they managed to open themselves. Winston, who was feeling for the first time part of a group, gave Jess and Smith an explanation for his behaviour, telling them the bitter truth. Three months before meeting Nick, a terrible night he was getting home by car with his best friend Paul who was driving... then the brake had suddenly stopped to work, the car had swerved from the road and they had crashed into a tree. He had seen his friend die in front of him and he hadn’t been able do anything to save him. After the accident he had promised himself not to get new friends who could replace Paul, because he shouldn’t forget him. He had stopped to believe in friendship because of this pact and every day he was more and more miserable thinking of Paul, and his feeling of guilt for not saving his friend in the accident was killing his soul… One day, however, when he had met Nick something had changed. Thanks to him he had been able to find the preciousness of having a friend again and accept that Paul’s death had not been his fault. But he was still afraid of forgetting his friend, this was the reason why he had not been so sociable with Smith and Jess. They finally understood everything and gave embarrassed apologies to the others, who accepted with a big hug. No other words were needed to get an impression that the group was close again. They slowly walked along the shore; the dawn was coming in front of them and a warm sun was lighting them, rising up into the clear sky. Their figures were reflected into the blue waters of the river. On the ground, no more shadows. 12 by Matteo Benati, Emanuele Falcolini, Alessandra Miglio, Livia Silvestri, Leonardo Timmi I was running breakneck through the wood. Even the last of my friends had been caught by the invaders. “Tasunke, help me!” my friend was shouting but I couldn’t help him. They were too many and they had guns, while I was alone and I was hurt in my shoulder. Just a few days before the other warriors of my tribe and me were fighting against the invader soldiers. We couldn’t stand the forced exodus which the American chief wanted us to do, so we had organized a revolt. But they were too strong for us, so we had to run away and leave our families in their hands. It was becoming dark and cold and I had to find a safe place to spend the night. I tried to keep on running but I was too tired and I couldn’t stand the pain in my shoulder any more. I slumped to the ground and bad thoughts seized me. I had lost my family, my friends, my country and all my affections, and the invaders continued to destroy our lands. I swore avenge against all white people. After that I fainted, exhausted. When I woke up I was in a tent. 13 I looked around me and I saw an old woman who started to talk to me. She was sewing a cloak with her big fingers. She had long, black hair, with some lines of grey, which reminded me her seniority; and her eyes were dark as the night without stars. She was the first person of my tribe which I had seen for days! Days that had seemed years to me. I couldn’t understand all the words but it was surely my language, finally I was among my people! “You saved me, how can I thank you? Might I talk with your tribe chief?” I immediately asked, without time for her to answer my first question. She was smiling as if I was a baby who asked something naïve; I couldn’t understand the reason why. She was about to answer me when two people came into the tent. They both were white people! I stood up scared and suddenly felt the hate against them coming back through my soul. The old woman reassured me smiling: “Don’t worry, they are friends. Sit down and hear what they are going to tell you. I’ll translate for you”. I listened to their words without understanding for long minutes. Then the old woman started to translate and I understood that in that village lived all the American deserters and their families who were against the war and wanted to live peacefully in the nature like us. At first I wasn’t totally convinced but when they showed me their village I was surprised by their lifestyle so similar to ours, and I began to trust them. I stayed with them for three days until I began to feel better; in the evening I told my new friends all of my story and that I wanted to leave their village to save my tribe. Surprisingly, they offered to help me, so we planned a way to attack the American enemy. The following morning we attacked the soldiers that had made my tribe prisoner: there was fire, there was death, but in the end we won the battle, and our life! The friendly white people invited us to live together in their village and of course we were happy to accept! So we founded the first mixed native and American community, destined to last for a long time. ****** “So you and Uncle Ernie have fought together?" asked little Hotah. "Yes, and that day I lost my left eye, but I found freedom. Now it's time to go to sleep for you kids, isn't it?" 14 Un terribile suono raggiunge le mie orecchie, sta arrivando dalla sveglia, è impossibile ignorare un suono che non posso spiegare a parole quanto odio. I miei lunghi, rossi capelli ricci coprono i miei occhi. “Ehi Mark! Che succede?” “Hai sentito la notizia? Non c’è scuola oggi!” “Sì! Che cosa facciamo?” “Ci incontriamo con gli altri per festeggiare.” “Dove?” Poi cominciamo a giocare. Continuarono a urlare! Lei, all’inizio titubante, accettò. Oggi mi sento davvero in forma! "Mi hai salvato, come posso ringraziarti?
