Research Group n. 1 UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI PERUGIA Molecular Catalysts for Water Oxidation and Olefin Polymerization Gianfranco Bellachioma, Alberto Bucci, Ilaria Corbucci, Lucia Fagiolari, Alceo Macchioni, Gabriele Pastori, Luca Rocchigiani, Renzo Ruzziconi, Cristiano Zuccaccia Dipartimento di Chimica, Biologia e Biotecnologie, via Elce di Sotto 8, I-06123 Perugia; Email: [email protected] The activity of our research group mainly focuses on synthesizing, investigating and testing in catalysis of two classes of compounds: i) molecules [1] and materials [2] for water oxidation to molecular oxygen, and ii) metallocene [3] and post-metallocene [4-5] complexes for olefin polymerization As far as point i) is concerned, water oxidation is an essential process for constructing an artificial photosynthetic apparatus aimed at the splitting of H2O into H2 and O2, whose realization would contribute to solve the worldwide energetic problem in a green and sustainable way [6]. We recently entered in such a fascinating research area synthesizing new iridium(III) catalysts that showed remarkable catalytic activity [7-10]. Coming to point ii), our main aim is to rationalize the effects of ion pairing [11] and, in general, of co-catalyst/catalysts interactions on the performances of catalysts. Investigation of the intermolecular structure of aggregates in solution is carried out taking advantages of the NMR methodologies developed during the last years [12-13]. Other important research lines of our team concern with iii) the investigation of FLPs [14] and halogen-bonded [15] adducts by NMR and iv) the synthesis of gold(I) cationic olefin and alkyne complexes [16-17].
