It is located in Genoa, the city that hosts one of the largest European aquariums. A group of marine biologists has given life to the “Metropolitan Dolphins” project, coordinated by Guido Gnone, with the scope of monitoring and studying the behaviour of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). “Bottlenose” is an English epithet for this dolphin. It is one of the most known and loved animals, especially by children, albeit the distorted image given by the media, the film industry and the performances by domesticated specimens in dolphinariums, which is that of social and playful animals with a natural disposition to a relationship with man. It’s true that a certain affinity exists – it belongs to the same class of mammals, the brain is among the most similar to that of man for its weight, the development of the cortex, the connections between the two hemispheres and the intelligence (here the subject gets somewhat complicated) – but the sulcus that divides us is still very deep. With predominant coastal habits, the dolphin was subjected and is still subjected to the anthropization of its habitat in violent way. A situation for numerous other animals that has proved difficult and often fatal. But the bottlenose dolphins have a gift for learning that has enabled them in Photo F. Saporiti mento ai cambiamenti che biologi ed etologi chiamano “opportunismo”. I biologi dell’Acquario in questi anni hanno monitorato costantemente le acque liguri da Genova al Golfo della Spezia raccogliendo informazioni scientifiche dei tur- a short period of time, to develop the ability to adapt to changes that biologists and ethologists call “opportunism”. However, in the last forty years the Mediterranean population has fallen in a way that gives cause for concern. “The bottlenose dolphin lives on the coastal strip within 4-5 nautical miles – says Guido Gnome – at a depth that hardly exceeds the 100-120 meters”. The reason it “chose” this specific area is linked to its diet. “This is an environment rich with plant and animal life, and the bottlenose dolphin feeds mostly on species that live in the proximity of the sea bed”. But it is also because in the last fifty years the environment has suffered a significant increase of human activity. Coastal overbuilding, maritime traffic, overfishing, pollution (marine and noise) have deeply changed the parameters of livableness in this area. To understand how the bottlenose dolphins have reacted is a matter of great scientific interest. They are not appreciated by the fishermen because they are powerful competitors and because they have learn to feed mostly from the fish caught in the nets (fixed net or trawl) without being caught themselves, if not very rarely. Furthermore, this action implies damage, especially to the fixed nets. In the last few years, the biologists of the Aquarium have constantly monitored the Ligurian waters from Genoa to the Gulf of Il tursiope vive nella fascia costiera entro 4-5 miglia, a una profondità che non supera 120 metri The bottlenose dolphin lives in the sea-coast within 4-5 miles, at no more than 120 meters of depth 73 liguria blue Sagep racconta e fa conoscere la Liguria grazie alle sue pubblicazioni turistiche. This part of the coast better lends itself to their habits because of the conformation of the coast, mostly rocky, the seabed rich with preys, and in season with the flow of deep-sea fish. Research is carried out with rafts. “The difference with the sailors – jokes Gnone – is that the ideal condition is a dead calm sea. When the situation is favourable, the likelihood of sighting is higher and therefore we can go out 3 to 4 per week. We use cameras, video cameras, hydrophone and GPS. When we spot a group of dolphins, we take note of the position, the species, the number of subjects and we take as many photos possible looking to frame the dorsal fin because it is the best identification element possible. Usually the fin has permanent scars that make a subject different from the others”. Once we get back at the base, the staff involved with the project analyses the photos looking for particular signs that allow identifying the subject by comparing the photos with previous ones. “We call it capturing and recapturing a photo - goes on Gnone - a system that helps us to classify and estimate the number of bottlenose Stenelle nel mare dell'area marina protetta del Santuario dei Cetacei Stenellas (striped dolphins) in the protected marine area of Cetaceans' Sanctuary 75 76 blue liguria Avvistamento nelle acque di Portofino e i confini del Santuario dei Cetacei Sighting in Portofino's waters and the boundaries of Cetaceans' Shrine liguria blue un sistema che ci permette di catalogare e stimare il numero di tursiopi e seguire i loro spostamenti. “Possiede un sistema di ecolocalizzazione biosonar ben svilup- dolphins, as well as to follow their moves. This is how we managed to have a photograph archive from which we can continually draw on in order to compare with new sightings”. Following the dolphins is not a simple operation. “The bottlenose dolphin is different from other species in that it prefers open sea areas and has a nomad character – it is rather faithful to a sea area more or less defined within the borders. This is what helps us in part to circumscribe the research in a reduced area and increase the possibility of sighting. But it’s not always sure”. The bottlenose dolphins are “peevish” compared to the spotted dolphins and getting close to them is not easy. They are not sociable animals in the open sea as is currently believed. They rarely swim on a bow wave formed by boats going through water. They have a powerful and muscular body that can reach 4 meters in length and a weight of 350 kg. They live in almost any sea in the world except for the cold waters in the Arctic and Antarctic. Quando nuota normalmente in superficie emerge a respirare all’incirca ogni 15-20 secondi. Esistono gruppi di sole femmine con i cuc- and low frequency sounds (clicks and whistles) – goes on Gnone – that are sent off to search for preys and to communicate. At birth, they learn a whistle that will be their identifying element for their entire life, a sort of “signature whistle” that allows them to be identified by their peers. The gestation period lasts 12 months. The babies at birth measure about a meter and remain in close contact with their mother for a few years until the final weaning that takes place 3-4 years later. They reach sexual maturity between 9 and 10 years for females and between 10 and 13 years for males. When they swim normally on the surface, they emerge to breathe approximately every 15-20 seconds. They can stop breathing for more than 8 minutes and can also reach a depth of 600 meters. They live approximately 35-40 years. The colour of the dorsal surface is grey, while the ventral surface is white. The dorsal fin is situated at the center of the animal. They live in small groups (5-10 subjects) characterized by strong social ties and an effective collaboration. Le informazioni raccolte vengono periodicamente confrontate tra gruppi di studio che operano in Toscana e Lazio, in modo da avere una maggiore quantità di dati su cui lavorare. b females only with their babies and others made up of male adults only that join the females during the reproduction period. They can easily reach a speed of 35-40 km per hour. They perform various acrobatic feats above or at water level, the meaning of which is still not quite clear: The leaping (a full jump above water), tailspinning (“walking” backwards on the water by using the tail as an axle and spin), tailslapping (slapping the fin on the surface of the water), bowriding (swimming on the bow waves that are formed by boats when they move through the water) and breaching (all done above water). The “Metropolitan Dolphins” project, born in 2001, has already provided interesting information. “In the last eight years of monitoring, we have identified about 200 subjects – concludes Guido Gnome – but we are not yet able to establish the fluctuation of the number of the population of the bottlenose dolphin. To obtain reliable data, we need to work at least 10-12 years”. The information collected is periodically compared with study groups that operate in Tuscany or Lazio, so as to have a greater amount of data on which to work. b
