a Varese dell’economia conta, eccome, nella pluridecorata carriera di un “gigante del
basket” quale Dino Meneghin: «Se ho iniziato a giocare a pallacanestro è perché mio padre,
quando io avevo 8 anni, venne qui per lavoro: proveniva della provincia di Belluno e si occupava di
ottica. Ci trasferimmo così a Varese, dove trovò occupazione in un’azienda del settore e dove tuttora
mio fratello ha un negozio proprio di occhiali. E in più, se non ci fosse stata l’azienda Ignis con il
“grande” Borghi, io e i miei compagni non avremmo certo potuto raggiungere i traguardi e i risultati
che invece abbiamo colto». Risultati che sono una sequela quasi interminabili di successi: 12
scudetti, 7 coppe dei Campioni, 4 coppe Intercontinentali, 2 coppe delle Coppe, 1 coppa
Korac con le squadre di Varese e di Milano, dove si trasferì nel 1980. Con la nazionale, invece, il suo curriculum dice di un campionato Europeo, oltre a 2 medaglie di bronzo continentali, e di una medaglia d’argento alle Olimpiadi di Mosca ’80. Reputarlo uno dei più forti
cestisti della storia della pallacanestro non è allora solo un modo di dire o un riconoscimento
di maniera. E’ soprattutto un dato di fatto, considerato anche che Dino Meneghin è stato
accolto nel tempio del basket mondiale: la Hall of Fame, l’Arca della Gloria di SpringfieldMassachussetts, che annovera cimeli e “memorabilia” dei grandi campioni della palla a spicchi negli oltre 100 anni di vita di questa splendida disciplina sportiva. Non è stato un caso
insomma che Meneghin sia stato il primo cestista italiano ad interessare i professionisti americani: nel 1974 i New York Knickerbockers, all’epoca una delle formazioni più importanti e
vincenti, lo invitarono per un provino al quale Dino rinunciò perché reduce da un infortunio
e perché, forse, non se la sentiva ancora di lasciare Varese. «Sin da piccolo ho avuto la percezione che Varese avesse permesso alla nostra famiglia di realizzarsi sul piano lavorativo – riprede
Meneghin –. E sin da piccolo mi sono affezionato a questa città, che è quella in cui ho trascorso oltre
metà della mia vita». Un periodo che ha visto una parte importante scorrere tra i portici e i
negozi del cuore cittadino: «Sin da ragazzo il punto di ritrovo era corso Matteotti, vicino al bar
Zamberletti. In verità, il nostro luogo d’incontro era la tabaccheria che lì a fianco gestiva Galli, ex
giocatore e allenatore di pallacanestro. Era proprio da quel punto che partivamo per le nostre scorazzate in centro. Ricordo il gruppo della Robur et Fides con Dodo Rusconi, Crugnola e Aldo Ossola:
tra quei negozi si è cementata un’amicizia che avrebbe poi avuto un ruolo fondamentale nei successi
internazionali della Ignis». Da grandi poi avrebbero trasferito il loro gruppo di qualche centinaia
di metri: sotto l’insegna del bar Pini, in piazza Monte Grappa, all’epoca vero covo dei tifosi
cestistici. «Ricordo però anche tanti altri negozi: per esempio i genitori di Lancini, un mio compagno
di scuola, ne possedevano uno di frutta e verdura in corso Matteotti. Durante la sfilata di Carnevale,
noi ci nascondevamo dietro la porta e quando passava la banda ci si divertiva a prendere noccioline
da lanciare dentro i tromboni!!». Insomma, tanta goliardia, ma Dino Meneghin comprava e fa
ancora acquisti al’interno dei negozi varesini? «Non c’è dubbio, ho sempre apprezzato la loro
qualità e la capacità di servire con attenzione il cliente. Espressione di una città che continuo ad
ammirare e mi appare sempre come molto elegante». Adesso, però, lei vive a Milano: «Sì, ma ho
stampato Varese nel mio dna. Capita spesso che ci torni per incontrare mio figlio Andrea e mio fratello. Quando si arriva dall’autostrada e si entra nel cuore cittadino si ha sempre un’impressione di
ordine che è raro trovare altrove. Molto bello in particolare il centro storico come si può vedere oggi,
dopo la riqualificazione firmata dall’architetto Mocchetti: peccato solo che mi manchino alcuni di quei
negozi e bar tra i quali ho trascorso la giovinezza!».

he economy of Varese has its role
in the much decorated career of
a giant of basketball like Dino
Meneghin: «I starter playing basketball
because my father came here when I was
eight years old. He came from the
Province of Belluno and worked in optical field. Therefore we moved to Varese,
where he found employment in a firm of
this sector and where my brother still has
his own shop and sells glasses. Beside my
team and I could not achieve the goals
and the results we aimed at without that
enterprise owned by the “great” Borghi
and called Ignis». The above-mentioned results refer to an almost endless series of successes: 12 shields, 7
champions’ cups, 4 Intercontinental
cups, 2 cups of the “Coppe” maches,
1 cup called Korac won with the
teams of Varese and Milan, where he
moved in 1980. Moreover, when he
played in the National team, his curriculum vitae was enriched by the
European championship, but also by
2 continental bronze medals and by a
silver medal won during the Olympic
Games of Moscow (1980). Therefore
we can consider him one of the greatest basketball players in the history of
this sport and this is not a simple
expression or a formal recognition, it
is a real fact. Dino Meneghin has
been also welcomed in the temple of
worldwide basket, that is the Hall of
Fame, the ark of the glory of
Springfield-Massachusetts. This temple numbers mementos and recollections of great basketball champions
who played in more than one hundred years of history of this wonderful
sport. In other words it was not a case

that Meneghin was the first Italian basketball player to whom the
American experts paid attention. 1974 was the period of the most
important and winning teams and the New York Knickerbockers asked
him to be tested. Dino refused this request because he had just had an
accident, but also because he did not feel up to leaving Varese.
Meneghin continues: «Since I was a child I have thought that Varese
allowed my family to fulfil herself in job. Therefore, since I was a child I have
loved this town, where I lived for more than half of my life ». This period
of his life was mainly spent in the galleries and shops of the centre of
the town: «Since I was a teenager my meeting point has been Corso
Matteotti, near Zamberletti café. To be precise our meeting point was the
near tobacconist’s managed by Galli, ex basketball player and trainer. From
that place we started being all around the centre of the town. I remember the
Robur et Fides team, in which there were Dodo Rusconi, Crugnola and Aldo
Ossola. Among those shops we strengthened a friendship that successively
had a fundamental role in Ignis international successes ». They then
moved their group further (some hundreds of meters further): They
met under the sign of café Pini, in Piazza Monte Grappa, that in that
period was the den of basketball players. «But I remember many other
shops too: For example the parents of Lancini, who was a schoolfellow of
mine, had a fruit and vegetable shop in Corso Matteotti. During Carnival
parades we used to hide ourselves behind the door and when the band passed
by we enjoyed collecting little nuts and launching them in the trombones! ».
In other words there was a student spirit, but did Dino Meneghin buy
in the shops of Varese? Does he still go shopping in the centre of the
town? «I have no doubt, I have always appreciated their quality and ability
in helping customers carefully. This is the expression of a town that I continue admiring and that always appears very elegant ». But now he lives in
Milan: «Yes, I live there but Varese is in my DNA. It often happens that I
return in Varese to meet my son Andrea and my brother. When you leave
the subway and enter the heart of the town you always have a sensation of
order that is rare to find elsewhere. In particular the historical centre of
Varese has become very fine after the redevelopment realized by the architect
Mocchetti. Which is the only negative aspect? What a pity that some of the
shops and cafés where I spent my youth are now closed!».
