UNEP/MAP-METAP SMAP III Project Promoting awareness and enabling a policy framework for environment and development integration in the Mediterranean with focus on Integrated Coastal Zone Management Coast Day Communication Report This project has been financially supported by the European Union SMAP III/2008/CR3 Priority Actions Programme Regional Activity Centre Split, February 2008 SMAP III/2008/CR3 “Promoting Awareness and Enabling A Policy Framework for Environment and Development Integration in the Mediterranean with Focus on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)” UNEP/MAP SMAP III project Coast Day Communication Report The communication strategy that has been followed for the Coast Day event has been articulated into four main lines: 1. Preparation of a press release in English, French and Arabic (Annex 1). This press release has been forwarded to several institutions around the Mediterranean through mailing list. In addition, several institutions prepared their own press releases. As a result, many Internet web sites have announced the news about Coast Day (Annex 2). The press release has been forwarded through the SMAP newsletter, which has 2,300 names in its mailing list. The SMAP RMSU has also organised a virtual treasure hunt on the SMAP Clearing House to which 30 people have participated. During the Coast Day, 130 people visited the SMAP Clearing House web page. After the Coast Day event, articles have been published in several newspapers (Annex 3). 2. Communication has been done through logo, poster, leaflet, bookmark, sticker and CD (Table below). Preparation of a TV spot. TV spot has been announced by press release in English, French and Arabic (Annex 5). A list of the TVs that have been contacted related to broadcasting of the spot is attached in Annex 6. Below is a list of the TVs that have broadcasted the spot: Lebanon Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC); National Broadcasting Network (NBN); Future Television (FTV); Tele Liban (TL); Tele Lumiere; Al Manar; and New Television (NTV). The TV spot has also been placed on the Green.tv, You Tube, Coast Day web site and on the HENCORE web page. 4. The central communication point for the Coast Day awareness campaign was the Coast Day web site. Due to environmental reasons, only a cover page will be attached to this report as Annex 7. The rest may be found on the Internet, at the following web address: http://www.coastday.org. Furthermore, some local and national TVs of the countries participating in the Coast Day have covered the event in different ways: The Italian national TV Rai Tre broadcasted a special emission of the show ‘Ambiente Italia’ live from Cagliari during the celebration of the Coast Day in Sardinia. Among others, Mr. Ivica Trumbic, PAP/RAC Director, and Ms. Tiny McKinney, from SMAP III TA, participated in the emission. During the emission, the Coast Day event was presented, and all the participants discussed coastal issues and the future of the Mediterranean Sea. This emission is available on a DVD. Mr. Andreas Papatsiotsos, from the Hellenic Network on Coastal Research, gave an interview to the Greek public channel ERT3, while Mr. Manos Koutrakis, from the Greek Fisheries Institute, was hosted by the local TV PROINI in the afternoon of October 24. In Lebanon, the Coast Day ceremony was broadcasted by two TVs, i.e. LBCI and Orange TV, and by three radio stations, i.e. Voice of Lebanon, Free Lebanon, and Lebanese Radio. In Morocco, the national TV broadcasted the appointment of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa "Ambassador for the Coast" in all daily TV news. The news is available on a DVD. Also in Palestine, both the radio and TVs covered the event.
