Dear Friends,
When Jesus rebuked us for not being awake for its
coming he cannot be referring simply to the coming of
the Son of Man at the last day. That evcnt will probably
not happen in our lifetime, though of course we cannot be
surc. Certainly it has not happened in the lives of
Christians now dcad, who in the past have studied the
words of this particular Gospel passage and sought
nourishment from them. Jesus must be referring, at the
least, in part to his personal coming to cach of us in the
encounters of everyday life. .

The Son of Man may come to us in creation, in the
delicate scent or texture of a rose, which we scarcely
notice because we arc not alert to the presence of the
master, hidden bencath the beauty of what he has. made..
He may come to us in the love of a wife or husband. His
presence unsuspected because we are not sUfficiently

Jesus comes to US in the Eucharist, but even in this
most sacred of encounters we are often aslcep to the
presence of Christ, the very ordinariness of the bread and
wine soothing us into hazy daydreaming. We can be
certain' Jesus will come to us, but not certain of how or
when. If we drive too quickly or too drowsily through
life, we may be . totally unprepared for a sudden encounter
with the Son of Man. A brief and vital opportu'!ity may
be loSt forever. So let us stay awake for the coming of the
Lord.
Finally, for cach of us, Jesus will come at the moment
of our death. Sooner. or later our journey down life's road
will come to a sudden hall.
That will be our most important encounter with the
Son of Man.

Sulle colline attomo Pontccchio, a
Bologna, nei pressi della villa palerna
"11 Grifone", un giovanissimo scienziato italiano, Guglielmo Marconi,
anneggia attomo a un'antenna aerca
fissata a terra a una piastra metallica e
a una bobina d'induzione, che provoca, schiacciando un tasto telegrafico, I'emissione di onde elettromagnetiehe. Su una collina a circa
due chilometri e mezzo di distanza,
un aiutante controlla un riccvitore in
grado di captare.I'arrivo del segnaIe,
un fueile poggiato accanlo. Per Ire
volte 10 scienziato preme iI tasto che
apre e chiude iI contatto nella bobina,
formulando nell'alfabcto Morsc la
lettera "S". Dalla collina di fronle
I'aiutanle, finD aIlora curvo su un
cocsore si solleva e spara un colpo in
aria: iI segnaIe era giunlo altraverso
I'elere. In quel momento era nata la
prima stazione radio del mondo: in
pratica un "irradiatore" di onde catturate a distanza da un'aItra antenna
collegata a un rilevatore.
Giungcva cosi' al traguardo un
delle sfide piu' eccitanti dell'awenIura scientifica: utilizzare cio' che
aIlora veniva chiarnata "I'elere" per
mettere in comunicazione gli esseri
umani tra di loro, vinccndo la distanza, iI tempo, le difficolta' logistiehe e anehe cconomiehe. I tentativi
erano cominciati gia' neUa prima
meta' del sccolo, subilo dopo gli
straordinari esperimenti di Faraday
ehe avevano conscgnato all'uomo la
possibilita' del controllo su quella
forza, finD aIlora misteriosa, ehiarnata
elettrieita' e I'inizio della comprensione della sua natura. L'elettrieita'
seorrcva agevolmenle attraverso un
filo conduttore: opportunamente inlervallata, era in grado di trasportare un
segnale, ehe un riccvente poteva dccifrare. Ma I'obiettivo per molti riccrcatori era far passare iI segnale da un

Per comprendere la nalura e i
comportamenti delle onde elettromagnetiehe bisognava attendere iI 1864,
quando uno seienziato seozzese,
James Clerk Maxwcll, elaboro' iI
sistema di cquazioni che porta iI suo
nome, unificando elettricita' e magnetismo nel concctto di "campo":
ossia, di una regione dello spazio in
cui si produce una forza.
Poco piu' di vcnti anni dopo, un
fisico ledesoo, Heinrieh Hertz, dimostro' ehe era possibile produrre onde
elettromagnetiche attraverso una serie
di rapidissimi disturbi in un sistema
clettrico, e cbe la loro lunghez;ra era
una funzione dei parametri eleltrici
del circuilo utilizzato. Ma la utilizZazione pratica di queste scoperte
sembrava ancora impossibile alia
maggior parte del mondo scientifico.
Toccava aI giovanissimo Marconi dimostrare che, aI contrario, era possibile utilizzare le onde eleltromagnetiehe per trasmeltere segnali a distanza
e ehe la "potenzialita' scientifica"
astratta era vcrificabile in concreto:

La dimostrazione rapprescntava un
successo della seienza italiana, ma iI
govemo dell'epoca, aI quale Marconi
aveva presentalo iI suo esperimenlo,

dichiaro' -"non interessalo": cos'erano queste diavolerie di onde hertziane, -di speltri eleltromagnetici, di
comunicazione senza fili, mentre la
rete telegrafica, naluralmenle su filo,
funzionava in modo cosi' aflidabile1
Un anno dopo, iI Minislero delle
Poste britannico forniva iI suo pieno
appoggio aI giovane scienzialo itaIiano, e aveva luogo la prima dimostrazione sperimentaIe di telegrafia
senza fili su lunga distanza altraverso
iI canale di Brislol.
Era solo il punlo di partenza. Nel
febbraio del 1902 Marconi riusciva a
trasmeltere i suoi segnali, debitamenle
registrati, tra Poldhu e la nave Phila-

2.500 chilometri. Una impresa "impossibile", sccondo molti scienziati
dell'epoca: perehe' le onde elettromagnetiche si propagano in linea
rella, e quindi la curvatura delle

segnali Morsc) e di musica finD alle
prime sperimentazioni nel campo

radar. La radiazione eleltromagnetica,
una delle qualtro principali forze che

domata.

E la radio enlrava nelle case e
nelle abiludini praticamenle di lulti
gli abitanti del gloOO. Gia' nell'oltobre del 1907 la societa' ehe Marconi
e i suoi soci britannici avevano fondalo in G.B. (la Marconi Company)
lanciava iI prima servizio commerciale radiolelegrafico illlraverso I'Atlantico. Nel 1920 esistono gia' in lutti
i paesi eivili servizi regolari di radiodiffusione. Nell'aprile del 1920 I'americano Frank Conrad, della Westinghousc Company, comincia a lrasmellere da casa sua musica leggera e
programmi di inlrallenimenlo. Due
anni dopo le stazioni radio per iI
pubblico negli Stati Uniti sono seicento. Nel 1922 nasce in Inghilterra la
BBC che diviene 'statale', Nel 1927,
mentre iI publico inglese aequista due
milioni di apparecchi ricevenli, diviene obbligalorio per tullii. paesi
dotare le navi, e poi gli aeromobili, di
apparecchi radio ricetrasmillenli: e le
onde hertziane salvano migliaia di
vile umane.
Oggi una invisibile ragnalela avvolge iI pianeta, raggunge ognuno di
noi. Messaggi, informazioni, spostamenti di denaro e di merei, guerre
diplomatiche e I'cco di conflilti
purtroppo rcali viaggiano sulle onde
elellromagneliche.

bodies. Many families were killed in
that shelter - what a daunting and
upsetting duty that must have been.

but fonunately Auna and baby Tony
had been evacuated to Radlett in
Hertfordshire. Perhaps the only good
thing about Ben's internment was the
fact that had he not been on the Isle
of Man he almost certainly would
have been in the house at the time the
bomb landed. After eighteen months
Ben was released, he returned home
and carried on with his life. It was
about this time that America entered
the War, lucky for somel
Ben was approached by an American Entertainments Officcr and given
the franchise for gaming machines on
the American Bases.
As the war drew to a close Auna
and the baby returned to ~ndon,
where they lived temporarily in a flat
in Islington Park Street, whilst waiting for the house in Kelross Road to
be rebuilt.
March 1950, Auna is expecting a
b~by, their joy is marred by the
dIscovery that Auna now had a serious heart condition, not entirely unexpected as she had suffered rheumatic
fever in her childhood. The baby
Eugene was a fine boy but the birth
took its toll, and Anna's health was
badly impaired. Three years later in.
May 1953, Auna passed away in the.
Italian Hospital. Ben was devastated
but at least he had his boys. Tony,
now 13 years old and Baby Eugene.

entailed him travelling around the
country. He took on a housekeeper
but he would very often take Eugen~
with him, the little boy would sleep
on blankets in the back of the van.
Tony was in school so he had to stay
with the housekeeper.
One year later, Ben decided this
was enough, the travelling had to
stop. He needed time with his children. He saw a house being built in
Aberdeen· Park, the decision was
made: no more travelling, no more
machines. Instead he bought the
house. A friend advised him that the
carpet trade was a good bet, he
spotted a large shop on the Old Street
Roundabout, ideal for carpets and
went for it. It turned out to' be a
successful venture.
1960, the shop was requisitioned
to make room for the larger roundabout that you see there today. Ben
had seen this coming and had already
bought premises in I.cather Lane and
the rest is history but you could say
that he had returned to 'The Hill".
When I mentioned
this Ben said, ,"I

passed on to son Tony, now located in
Clerkenwell Road, and is a, pan of
Bourne Estate, where, (if you remember last month's story) Mary Ann Finn
(Scsti) Tony's great-grandmother
lived in Skipwonh Buildings in 1905
Also in 1960 Ben met an old
friend of Anna's family, Silvia Mazzioli, the couple became friends' and
three years later they married. -Silvia
and Ben, are living in the hoUse in
Aberdeen, Park: The Robeno family
are in constant touch with onc an.other. Next issue, wc'lI follow other
members of the family who never
stayed so close to home.

caduti in guerra, alia prcsenza delle autorita' eivile e militari
della Repubblica Italiana.
La cerimonia, nel corso della quale sono state csposte le
insegne della Repub1?lica Italiana e delle Associazioni d'arma
riconosciute, rappiesenta onnai una tradizione della nostra
collettivita' in Gran Bretagna.

nato in nella Chiesa di S. Pietro. Ci ritroviamo I'ultimo giovcdi' del

la Messa, ci ritroviamo nel Club per un caffe'.
Siamo molto uniti, specialmente nella preghiera. Preghiamo per

In data 15.10.95 si e' tenuto il Congresso della F.B.I.P.
presso la Chiesa S1. Saviour's di Lewisham Londra, per
proccdero alia nomina del nuovo Prcsidente dopa le ben
note viccndo ebe avevano portato ad un arresto dall'attivita' della Fcderazione.
La riunione -si e' ancbe resa necessaria a seguito
dell'immatura scomparsa del Cav. mf. G. Biasi.
Si o' visto una larga partecipazione della Comunita'
Italiana cbe ha a1frontato con screnita' e scnso di
rcsponsabilita' la 'difficile ,situazione cbe si era venuta a
crcarc a seguito dell'a1lontanamento dell'ex segrctarlo G.
Scarpa 0, dopo ~ efliciente 0 democratico dcbattito, ha
proccduto alia nomina del nuovo Prcsidente nella persona
dell Comm. Avv. Sammarco.
Si 0' poi passati alia modifica di alcune norme
s1atutarie cd all'elczione del nuovo Direttivo.
La Fcderczione, prendendo atto di tutti g1i interventi
dei Signori Rapa, Basaricsc, Mabca, Girardi 0 Rizzi, ha
deciso di continuare a svolgerc democraticamente e con i
pieni consensi dei membri, I'attivita' come da norme
s1atutario 0 'di a1largare ancbo a1le zone periferichela
prcscnza della Federazione. 11 Direttivo ha convenuto
all'a1largamento ed a1tre zone come: Cardiff, Birmingham
e Scozia.
A tale scopo il Direttivo fa appello a tutti colooo che

dell'attivita' e cbe intendono esscro nominati responsabili

order per team made payable to "BackhiU" and mUst be received no later than 31st
December 1995. You may enter the compeddon after the commencement date but your
team selecdoD will not receive the cumuladve scores prior to the registradon .date.
There Is no Omit to the number of teams Managers may register.

Debard and 16-year~ld Frederic Langlais.
Not only were the evenings enjoyable,
but also beneficial. Beru Casali, Renata
Filippi and Co. raised £1,700 which will go
towards the North I;Ondon Hospice and the
Children of Romania Appeal.

Domenico Pascale era nato a S. Maria di Castellabate
nel 1938. Ando' a San Remo per ragioni di Javoro e nel
1955
incontro' rnatrimonio quando era ancora giovanis•
slmo.
Arrivo" in Inghilterra ncl 1960 e trascorse i'suoi anni
presso la ditta Stuart Low Nurseries Co. di Enfield
diventando responsabilc< anehe del personale e in questa
sua qualita' ebbe occasione di aiutare tanti nostri connazionali che erano in cerca di lavoro.
Inizio' ad occuparsi volontariamenle della nostra gente
allrave~o iI Comitato Scuola-Famiglia di Enfield dando iI
suo val!do contributo per I'organiz:ulzione dei corsi di
lingua e culiura italiana per i figli dei nostri connazionali.
Fu un vero esempio di "Buon padre di famiglia"" della
grande famigia degli italiani di Enfield. Venne elello
presidente dell'Associazione Campani nel Mondo e vicepresidente della Federazione Associazione Seuola Famiglia
(F.A.S.FA.).Opero' con capaeita', inlelligenza e passione
anehe come rappresentante del Patronato INAS per quella
zona. Organizzo' molti incontri e convegni a beneficio
della comunita' 'italiana che vi partccipava allivamente.
Di cuore generoso era sempre pronlo a dare una mano

dove c'era la nccessita',
Lo abbiamo avulo amico sincero e fedele.
Circa quallro anni fa' dccise di ritirarsi nella sua Castellabate dove continuava nel suo lavoro con alcuni suoi
famigliari.
Ho avuto iI privilegio di essere suo ospite, con mia moglie e due delle mie figlie e abbiamo trascorso

does, some magnificent music. The
three principals are all very well
served with arias and duets etc. and
the Chorus have,their fair share of the
glory. The moist frequent comment,
however, was ·"What a great weekend". This, of course, is added music
to our ears because the main purpose
of the weekend. apart from giving
young singers the opportunity of singing a complete Verdi role; is to give
enjoyment and also to encourage a
love of Verdi. If we achieve. either
one of these aims we are pleased, if
we achieve both then we .are deIightedl
So ended our sixth weekend workshop and we are looking forward to
returning again in 1996. What will the

emigrati residenti all'estero. Ovviamente, in questo clima di austerita'
quello che ci si poteva aspettare non
era molto ma almeno si ineomincia a
notare una inversione di tendenza: e'
forse vero che l'Italia dei politici e
dei giornalisti, dopo tutto, non wole
aneora che iI problema "italiani emigrati all'estero" sparisca eompletamente dalla seena?
La legge no.335 dell'S agosto
seorso che riforma radica1mente le
pensioni dell'assicurazione generaIe
obbligatoria e sue sostituzioni, migliora in parte iI caleolo del pro-rata
italiano delle pensioni in eonvenzione
intemazionale dopo anni di interventi
restrittivi.
Prima di esaminare brevemente le
partidclla riforma,che piu' ci interessano cia vicino, vale la pena fare una
piceola visita aI caleolo delle pensioni
in regime intemazionale.·
I Regolamenti eomunitari, che per
me sono esSenziali in quanto proteggono i diritti acquisti del lavoratore
migrante, prevedono i seguenti tre
momenti nel caleolo della pensione:
1.I'INPS 'mette -insieme tutti i eontributi versati clall'interessato nei vari
Stati europei;
2. in un seeondo momento I'istituto
caleola I'importo della pensione a cui
I'interessatoavrebbe diritto se tutti i
eontributi eosi' cumulati fossero stati
versati in Italia (pensione virtuale);
3. infine I'INPS riduce I'importo

ai eontributi versati solo in Italia
(pro-rata).
E' noto che'questo tipo di caleolo
pro<luceva dei piceoli pro-rata di pensione italiana cbe spesso .rasentavano
ii ridieolo. Fino a qualcbe tempo fa
infatti, credevo che iI primato dei
pro-rata di grandezza li11ipuziana
spettasse. a noi della Gran Bretagna
(vi rieordate le 10 lire mensili?).
Invece, .i nuei eolleghi ,del Belgio mi
hanno fatto ricredere poiche' I'importo piu' basso e' stato assegnato ad
un nostro ,eonnazionale residente in
quella nazione e che era di 2 lire aI
mese,
Vintegrazione al minima era la
prestazione che metteva un po' di
sanita' c di giudizio in tutta questa
faceencla ma a partire daI 1990 iI
diritto a questa prestazione per i
residenti all'estero e' stato man mano

di questa operazione, sostengono i
Patronati, sta nel falto che tale procedura non ha nessuna giustillcazione
legale quando iI diritto alia pensione
estera e' stato maturato senza I'aiuto
dei eontributi versati in Italia.
b) in questi ultimi tre anni I'INPS ha
ricalcolato la pensione italiana
prendendo in eonsiderazione non solo
le variazioni delle pensioni estere ma
ancbe le f1uttllazioni della lira rispeltO
alle monete estere. I Patronati sono
dell'opinione cbe iI ricaleolo determinato cia queste sitllazioni non sono
giustificate dai regolamenti eomuni-
tari.
-
c) iI recupero degli indebiti e' stato
una fonte di infiniti rieorsi cia parte
dei Patronati. La riforma pero' chiaramente stabilisee cbe I'indebito, cioe'
I'importo della pensione pagata in
piu' del dovuto, va restituito e cbe
I'INPS puo' sospendere iI totale pagamento della pensione fino aI recupero
dell'intera somma.

apparentemente, cerea di limitare i
danni di queste norme stabilendo che
se le integrazioni aI minima in pagamento aI 1 gennaio 1996 sono superiori all'importo effettivamente dovuto
in base a queste nuove norme, queste
somme restano confermate nella
misura erogate al31.12.95.
Pensando agli importi irrisori delle
pe~ioni integrate al minima erogate
aI 31.12.95, in effetti quest'ultima
salvagnardia fa ridere ma, eome ho
,,
detto cia principio, la buona intenzione
va sempre ineoraggiata: potrebbe partare buoni frutti domani.
1\ eomma IS della nuova legge
invece, non si ferma alle -buone
intenzioni ma, in molti casi, addiritturn semplifica iI caleolo delle pensioni in eonvenzione e ne migliora
I'importo.
La norma infatti stabilisee che
I'importo mensile in pagamento non
puo' essere inferiore, per ogni anno di
eontribuzione, ad un qliafantesimo deltrattamento ,minimo vigente alia data
di -entrata in vigore' della presente
legge (lit. 15,661); ovvero alia data di
deeorrenza della pensione.
In parole povere, questo significa
che ogni pensionato deve farsi un'
piceolo caleolo: deve trovare quanti
anni di eontributi ha versato in Italia e
moltiplicarli per Lit. 15,661. Se I'importo 'eosi' ottenuto e' superiore-a
quello effettivamente ricevuto deve
eontrattare.=§\lbito_uno.....deUatrollati"'·.="""'....'"
per fare la domancla di "Rieostituzi-,

one della pensione".
Ribadiseo che I'INPS non e' tenuto a fare la rieostituzione della
pensione automaticamente: spetta alI'interessato fame domancla.
Da ultimo iI Comma 16 preeisa
che le 15,661 Lire sono dovute al
netto e non eomprendono le maggiorazioni sociali e gli altri benefiei
spettanti agli ex eombattenti.
In eonclusione. Certo, siamo aneora lontani daI principio in base al
quale le eonvenzioni di sicurezza
sociale dovrebbCro garantire tanti prorata proporzionali a quello cbe
sarebbe stato iI diritto acquisito in un
unieo stato: solo eosi' si potra' dire
rea\izzzato iI principio della Iibera
cireolazione dei lavoratori. Cio' nonostante, questa legge c' un passo nella
giusta direzione.

I gained my love of football and
Arsenal in particular from silting at
my father's knee: From an early age I
heard tales of having to queue from 1
o'clock onwards to gain entry into the
ground to see Herbert Chapman's

Dolce di Torrone
Ingredienti:
500 gr di panna
200 gr di torrone
200 gr zucchero semolato
4'uova
3 cucchiai di brandy 0 rum
100 gr di amaretti
SO gr ciocolato grattugiato,

Torrone Sweet
Ingredients:
2 x 10 oz carton of double cream
7 oz torrone
7 oz caster sugar
4 eggs
3 tbspns of brandy or rum
4 oz amaretti biscuits
2 oz plain chocolate, grated
•
Metodo:
Pestate il torrone e gli amaretti. Sbattete i tuorli con 10
zucc~ero e sbattete a ncve gli albumi.
Incorporateli ai tuodi. Montate la panna e incorporatela
con delicatezza ai tuorli.
Bagnate il 'fondo di uno stampo con 1 cucchiaio di
brandy.
Spolverizzatcci sopra una terza di cioccolato, una terza di
torrone ed un3'lc:rza di amaretti.

Versatcvi sopra meta" della crema, poi meta' del
cioccola'to, degli amaretti, del torrone ed un cucchiaio di
brandy.
Coprite con tutto la crema e per ultimo, il rimanente
torrone, amaretti, cioccolato e brandy.
Coprite 10 stampo con pellicola e mettetelo nel freezer per
almeno 24 ore. Toglietelo 20 minuti prima di servirlo.
Mettetelo per qualche minuto in acqua fredda.
Capovolgetelo suI piatto di portata,
Method:
Crush the torrone and amarctti. Beat the egg yolks and
sugar together. Beat. the egg whitci., until stiff. Gently
fold them into the yolks. Whip the cream until thick and
fold it into the egg mixture.

Put 1 tablespoon of brandy in the botto'm of a glassproof
dish. Sprinkle with a third of the chocolate, third of
torrone and third of amarctti. Cover with half
the cream
,
mixture.
Sprinkle on top half the remaining torrone, amaretti and
chocolate and 1 tablespoon of brandy. Cover with
remaining cream. Finally sprinkle on the remaining
torrone, amaretti, chocolate and 1 tablespoon of brandy.
Cover the dish with clingfilm and place in the freezer
for at least 24 hours.
Remove from freezer at least 20 minutes before serving
and place in cold water for a few minutes. Turn onto a
serving dish.

SO gr filetti di acciughe tagliati
20z tin of anchovies, cut into pieces
SO gr capperi tritati
2 oz capers chopped
100 gr olive nere
40z black olives
manciata di basilico 0 prezzemolo
handful of basil or parsley
salclpepc/zucchero
salt/pepper/sugar
Metodo:
Per il sugo tritate la cipolla e rosolatela con l'aglio
nell'olio. Unite le acciughe e i capperi. Fateli cuocere per
5 minuti. Aggiungete il passato di pomodoro, 4 cucchiai
di acqua, sale, pepe e zuchero. Continuate la cottum per
30 minuti.
10 minuti prima di togliere dal fuoco, unite le olive
snocciolate e tagliazzate. Cucinate gli spaghetti al dente,
scolateli, e conditeli col sugo.
Method:
For the sauce finely chop the onion and lightly flY with
the garlic in the oil. Add the anchovies, the capers and
cook for about 5 minutes. Add the sicved tomatoes, 4
tbspns of water, salt, pepper and sugar. Continue
cooking for a further 20 minutes.
Add the olives stoned and roughly chopped, and cook
for a further 10 minutes. Cook the spaghetti, drain and
toss in the sauce.
