For much of recent history Chinese companies have been accused of copying Western products, goods and services. In the film and entertainment areas, it may now be time for a rethink. This seminar will look at how China has pulled away from some old business models and has developed its own communications technologies, styles and syntax. These put Chinese companies – and the foreign companies that are now also using these platforms – in close touch with Chinese audiences and consumers. It is the most immediate and effective form of language for conveying culture, values and messages to the future generations: the most engaging for transporting children and young people into a world of dreams and fantasy; what accompanies and drives the growing up of the new generations. The institutions, television networks, production companies and writers are the first to contribute to the growing up of future generations and the development of society in years to come. Given the amount of time it takes to produce animated TV series and film productions and the number of professionals they involve, they require a considerable amount of funding that is not usually covered by the capital put up by the individual producers involved. The countries that produce the most animations are those in which production coincides with the political and institutional will to develop and support the animation industry, with significant financial and welfare benefits. PRESENTATION OF ANIMATION EUROPE Speakers: Anne- Sophie Vanhollebeke (Studio Campedelli / Cartoon Italia) Cristian Jezdic (Square Toonz – XG group / Cartoon Italia) PRESENTATION OF LAGANÀ AWARD Speaker: Roberto Genovesi (Cartoons On the Bay) MEDIA AND EUROPEAN ANIMATION: PROPOSALS AND PROSPECTS h 5.30 p.m. – 7.30 p.m. / Hotel Boscolo Exedra (Sala Diocleziano) The traditional meeting held at MIA by Creative Europe – MEDIA, this year will be entirely devoted to animation and will open with the institutional welcome of Enrico Bufalini, Project Manager of Creative Europe Desk Italy/MEDIA at Istituto Luce Cinecittà and Harald Trettenbrein, Head of Unit for Creative Europe-MEDIA Programme of the Executive Agency EACEA in Brussels. Afterwards, Giuseppe Massaro, Project Officer of the Rome Office, will present how the Subprogramme MEDIA of Creative Europe supports producers on this specific field and will introduce a panel that, celebrating the 25thanniversary of the Programme, will analyze the upward trend of European animation production and international competitiveness. Speakers include also beneficiaries of MEDIA support that will show and describe some of their successful case-stories and will enliven the debate with proposals and prospects. Starting from Enzo D’Alò, a well renowned producer that in time has developed with MEDIA support many titles: some of his credits are How the Toys Saved Christmas, Lucky and Zorba and Pinocchio; to Didier Brunner, famous French producer who often has been supported by MEDIA funding for his productions. He is behind the well-known animated movies with the character of Kirikou, directed by Michel Ocelot. Didier Brunner, introduced by Alfio Bastiancich, who will explain the reasons why the European animation has now its prominent place in the international market. During the panel, will also be presented the European Animation Emile Awards by one of its founders Didier Brunner. The Creative Europe Desk Italy/MEDIA and MIA organize the event, with the support of Mibact-DG Cinema and Istituto Luce Cinecittà.
