COMUNICATO STAMPA Primo paese in Africa registra Eurartesim® (dihydroartemisinin‐piperaquine) Il Ghana approva il nuovo anti‐malarico sviluppato insieme a MMV Ginevra, 7 marzo 2013. Il Ghana è il primo paese ad approvare Eurartesim®, una terapia combinata in dose fissa composta da diidroartemisinina e piperachina, a base di artemisinina (ACT) consigliata nelle linee guida del OMS per il trattamento della malaria non complicata da P. falciparum. Eurartesim® è stata approvata dalla European Medicines Agency (EMA) nel 2011 in seguito allo sviluppo in collaborazione tra Sigma‐Tau e MMV Si tratta di una pietra miliare fondamentale per il trattamento della malaria in Africa. Molti paesi africani hanno utilizzato versioni di DHA‐PQP in passato senza alcun garanzia di qualità, mentre altri hanno voluto inserire la medicina nei loro programmi di sovvenzioni internazionali. Questa registrazione punto di riferimento in Ghana, una qualità garantita versione di DHA‐PQP sarà ora alla portata di pazienti africani. Inoltre, questa registrazione consentirà l'uso dell'Eurartesim all'interno del programma INESS Fase IV che raccoglie dati sulla sicurezza ed efficacia di nuove ACT e condivide le informazioni con altri paesi endemici per la malaria. MMV e Sigma‐Tau stanno lavorando insieme per registrare il farmaco per l’utilizzo in altri paesi endemici, tra cui tutti i paesi inclusi nel programma INESS (Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mozambique and Tanzania). Ghana ha già adottato DHA‐PQP per il trattamento della malaria insieme ad altri trattamenti di prima linea. Completata la registrazione di Eurartesim® adesso lo stato può procurare il farmaco attraverso le agenzie di aiuti internazionali e portare alle popolazioni maggiori medicinali di alta qualità. Una più ampia gamma di terapie per trattare la malaria consente ai paesi endemici di adeguare le strategie di controllo per le loro esigenze specifiche. Ghana has become the first African country to approve Eurartesim®, a high‐quality, fixed‐dose combination of dihydroartemisinin‐piperaquine (DHA‐PQP). DHA‐PQP is one of the artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs) recommended by WHO’s Standard Treatment Guidelines for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. Developed by Sigma‐Tau in partnership with MMV, Eurartesim was approved by the European Medicines Agency in 2011. This is a critical milestone for malaria treatment in Africa. Several African countries have used non‐quality‐
assured versions of DHA‐PQP in the past, while others have wanted to include the medicine in their Global Fund grants. With this landmark registration in Ghana, a quality‐assured version of DHA‐PQP will now be within the reach of African patients. In addition, this registration will enable Eurartesim to be used within the INESS (INDEPTH Effectiveness and Safety Studies of Antimalarials in Africa) Phase IV programme that gathers data on the safety and effectiveness of new artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs) and shares the information with other malaria‐endemic countries. MMV is working closely with Sigma‐Tau to register the drug for use in a number of other malaria‐
endemic countries including all of those involved in the INESS programme (Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mozambique and Tanzania). Ghana has already adopted DHA‐PQP into its malaria standard treatment guidelines with other first‐line treatments. With the registration of Eurartesim complete, it can now procure the drug through international funding agencies and provide a greater choice of high‐quality medicines to patients. A wider range of therapies to treat malaria enables disease‐endemic countries to adapt control strategies to their specific needs.
