Historical facts
The first settlements in the territory of Asti go back to the Neolithic Age but the town
was proclaimed in the 2nd century B.C. during the Roman influence which gave Asti
and the surrounding area a “municipium” with the name of Hasta in 122 B.C.. Located in a favourable geographic position on the route of the consular road Via Fulvia,
which became the Decumanus Maximus of the roman town (today’s Corso Alfieri), it
became, after the fall of the Empire, a Longobard Duchy and later, a Frankish County.
The alternating European political events of the 10th century highlighted a distance
from the Italian scene and in particular from the Asti territory. This gave the Bishops
more power, also in political terms. It was in fact the Bishop Oddone III, on 28th May
1095, who invested Asti, its consuls, the castle and the Annone village with all the
pertinent rights. This gave birth to the free municipality of Asti, which, thanks to its
mercantile vocations and to its strategic position, became one of the richest and
most powerful municipalities of North Italy, producing its own money and maintaining commercial relations with every part of Europe. The richest and most powerful
04
Asti families had pawnshops in Germany, Flanders, Holland and beautiful palaces in
town ornamented with high towers. Following the battles between the families for
the economic and political predominance, Asti loses its autonomy in the 14th century
by finishing in the hands of the Angiò branch (1315) of the Visconti family, then of
the Orleans and finally in the 16th century of the Savoia family. In the following two
centuries it was besieged and occupied by the Spanish and French to return to the
Savoia family after the Restoration period when its history became one with Italy.
Today Asti is a town of 76.000 inhabitants, with a large and well conserved historical centre with pleasant walks through narrow medieval streets and 19th century
squares with medieval towers, baroque churches and a fascinating gothic cathedral. A town which every year during the Palio race (the oldest in Italy), relives
the medieval air and during which time the excellence of the oenogastronomical
scene mingles beautifully with the simplicity of the agricultural traditions of the
surrounding countryside.

town of towers.

..
TORRE ROSSA
Corso Alfieri - 1st century AD
The only testimony of Roman Asti which has been conserved
in full height. It was part of one of the town gates which permitted entrance from the west of the “Decumanus maximus”.
There was probably an identical tower opposite which would
have given the entrance an aspect similar to the palatine doors
of Turin. The lower part, with its 16 sided polygon, dates back
to the 1st century AD, the upper cylindrical part with its alternate sandstone and cotto strips, typical of the Romanesque
presence in Asti, is an addition of the 12th century when the
tower was once again used as a bell tower, firstly for the lost
Church of Saint Secondo and then for the Baroque church of
Saint Catherine.
2
TORRE TROIANA
Piazza Medici - 13th century
This tower is one of Asti’s main symbols. It is 44 metres high
and the highest medieval tower in Piedmont. It features three
elegant double lancet windows with arched decorations in
cotto and sandstone. Originally it was located alongside the
homes of the Troja family and reached a height of 36 metres
at the embattlement. It was raised in the 15th century when
the tower, upon extinction of the family, was sold to the Municipality who placed its civic clock and bronze bell on it. It is
the only tower which can be visited in the town: the internal
wood staircase has 199 steps up to the battlement floor. From
here the view over the town and surrounding hills is splendid.
Open to visitors from April to October, on Saturdays and Sundays 10-13/16-19.
In other periods please phone 0141 399489-466

TORRE COMENTINA
Corner of Corso Alfieri - Piazza Roma
second half of the 13th century
It is 38,55 metres high (the limit established by the Asti municipality was 40 metres) and with the Trojan Tower it is the only
tower to have maintained its original height and a series of
single lancet windows on its four sides and below the battlement a double line of arches in cotto and sandstone. For
many years it was known as the “Torre di San Bernardino”
from the name of the adjacent church (now non longer existing) for which it was a bell tower. The tower was used for
centuries as an emplacement for the Palio horse competition,
which was run along the Contrada Maestra. It is next to the
Medici palace in neo-Gothic style (1898).

TORRE DE REGIBUS
Corner of Corso Alfieri -Via Roero
13th century
This is the only example of an octagonal tower. It was lowered to its present height of 27 metres in the 1700s. Originally it was three floors higher with string courses in sandstone,
each with four double lancet windows similar to those of the
Trojan tower and finished with a Ghibelline battlement. The
tower was part of a complex defence system thanks to the
presence of the other two towers. One of these, now lowered
to the height of the surrounding roofs is still visible on the
corner between Corso Alfieri and Via Roero. This area is still
today referred to as the corner of the three kings.
5
TORRE GUTTUARI
Piazza Statuto - first half of the 13th century
The construction has a square base, still today lived in, and is
one of the oldest medieval towers of the town. Lowered in the
1700s, in 1898 it was decorated with a Ghibelline battlement
in a swallow tail fashion and fitted with rectangular windows.
It housed the tobacconist shop that is still present today on
the ground floor. The function of the towers was certainly for
defence but the main reason they were built was to show the
power and riches of the families who commissioned them
to the extent that, when the municipality established a limit
for their height, the families simply made the bases of the
towers larger.
6
TORRE PONTE
Corner of Via Q.Sella - Via San Martino
end of the 13th century
Clearly visible from Corso Alfieri and inserted in the Gazelli
Palace, despite being cut off in the 18th century, it still shows
all its grandeur with its 8 metres per side, thick walls and few
openings except for the single opening on the south side and
some slots. The only decorations are the geometric motives
obtained with the insertion of ferrous bricks. Opposite the
tower are the remains of the fortified house with tower belonging to the powerful Roero di Cortanze family; the tower was
lowered to the palace level but still shows the elegant single
lancet window with decorations in cotto and sandstone.
Other towers to be seen: Torre Solaro (Via Giobert), Torre Natta (Via Natta), Torre Roero di Monteu (Via Roero), Torri di Palazzo Bunei (Vescovado, Via Carducci).

CATHEDRAL
nts...
Piazza Cattedrale
Dedicated to Our Lady, it was built from the end of the 1200s to the
middle of 1300s on a previously existing building site (of which only
the mosaic flooring still remains in the presbytery). The Cathedral
is the most beautiful and stately example of gothic architecture in
Piedmont. The south side is the most spectacular with its Romanesque bell tower (1266), the tall single lancet window with alternate
kerbing in cotto and sandstone, the elegant tiburio and the Pelletta
tower (14th century) which is internally accessible, with frescoes of
the 18th century upon the commission of the then Bishop Milliavacca. Most of the works of art, from the baptismal fonts of the 8th century and 1229. In a niche we find a terracotta group dating to 1502.
The chapels display the plates of Gandofino d’Asti, a well known
renaissance artist of Asti active from the end of the 15th century until
1530. All the wood carvings are very precious and come from the
local artisans (18th century).

COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAN SECONDO
Piazza San Secondo
Dedicated to the Patron Saint of Asti, the present church was built
between the 13th and the 15th century. Of the previous building remain
only the Romanesque bell tower (11th century) and the central part of
the crypt (10th century) which holds the Saint’s remains. Internally there are three gothic naves with many precious works among which are
the polyptych and a plate of Gandolfino d’Asti, the 18th century wooden chorus and traces of frescoes dated from the 1300s and 1400s.
The first chapel of the right nave hosts the drapes of the Palio donated
to the church every year on 1st Tuesday of May during the medieval
ceremony of the Offering of the Palio. At the end of the nave is the 18th
century chapel of San Secondo designed by Bernardo Vittone.

CHURCH OF SAN MARTINO
Piazza San Martino
Erected at the beginning of the 1700s by the Barnabites with a project
designed by Father A. Mazenta, the church mentioned by Vittorio Alfieri as being “meeting place every midday for the idle of the world….”
is one of the best examples of baroque architecture in Asti. Internally
it has many notable frescoes of the Canelli artist Giancarlo Aliberti and
is rich with stuccoes and precious marble. Notable are all the wood
decorations and the sacristy. Alongside to the Church stands the convent, recently restored, and opposite is the deconsecrated church of
the confraternity of San Michele (mid 18th century) The square is one
of the most beautiful open spaces in the town centre.

4 CHURCH OF SANTA
MARIA DI VIATOSTO
Loc. Viatosto, 4 km from Piazza Alfieri
The present church is the rebuilt version of the 1300s Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Riparupta (11th century). Internally the three naves have the crossed ceiling, which is supported by columns with sculptured capitals in sandstone. Recent restoration has brought to light some beautiful frescoes
from the 13th to 16th century featuring the Madonna feeding
the baby (the church was probably the place for female devotion and for requesting grace in birthgiving and breastfeeding).
Among the many works of art is a wood Madonna of the 14th
century and a sculpture in sandstone decorated in the 1400s.
The church square is an excellent viewpoint over the town
and hills.

THE COMPLEX OF SAN PIETRO IN CONSAVIA
Corso Alfieri 2
The Church, known as the Baptistery of Saint Peter, was built
1100-1130, on the model of the Saint Sepulchre of Jerusalem
and is an excellent example of Romanesque in Asti, with its
alternation in bricks and sandstone. The structure of the “Rotonda” is formed of an ambulacrum with eight columns within
a walled perimeter, which results circular inside and a polygon
outside. When the church was given to the Cavaliers of Saint
John (Gerosolimitani), who took it over in 1169 the antique
dedication to the Saint Sepulchre was replaced by the title of
San Pietro di Consavia. In the 15th century, Giorgio di Valperga,
Grand Prior of the Order added the square room which today
holds his name, a large room with crossed ceilings decorated
with a complex group of figures in cotto. This is the richest
example of this ornamental technique in Asti. The two buildings, deconsecrated, are also exhibition halls.

1 PALAZZO ALFIERI - MUSEO ALFIERIANO
FONDAZIONE GUGLIELMINETTI
PALAZZO MAZZETTI - CIVIC MUSEUM
Corso Alfieri 375
The great tragedian Vittorio Alfieri was born in this house on January
16, 1749. The building came to his family during the 17th century
and was “modernized” around 1736 by the architect Benedetto Alfieri (a cousin of Vittorio). Beyond the small atrium there is a trapezoidal, very spectacular courtyard, which opens up to the garden on
the left, in which the platan of 1849 stands. The first floor contains
the apartments and the birth room of Vittorio Alfieri, who lived in
this house only until the age of five years. The palace contains the
Foundation “Centro Studi Alfieriani” and the Alfieri Museum, which
is being renovated at the moment. On the ground floor the Eugenio
Guglielminetti Foundation hosts temporary exhibitions.

Corso Alfieri 357
Between 1730 and 1751 renovated by Benedetto Alfieri, the
building maintains its sumptuous interiors on the first floor with
stuccos, transoms and baroque furnishings. Since 1940 it is
home of the city art gallery which among other things contains
paintings of the so called Maestro di San Martino Alfieri (15th 16th century), works by Guglielmo Caccia, Giancarlo Aliberti, a
considerable section on Genovese Painters of the 17th century
with two works of Valerio Castello, the wooden microsculpures
of G.M Bonzanigo, as well as a rich collection of Piedmontese
and Italian artists from the 19th and 20th century (among others
Grosso, Delleani, Pittatore, Cagli and Guttuso).

It was brought to its present form in 1754 by the Count Gabuti di Bistagno, who bought it the year before and modified
the pre-existing medieval structure after a project of Benedetto
Alfieri. The front has the typical aspect of a building by Alfieri,
with its central main door and the balcony above. The Museum
displays memorabilia, paintings, weaponry and coins from the
period 1797-1870, donated by families of Asti. From the rooms,

SPAZIO SAN GIOVANNI - DIOCESAN MUSEUM
Via Natta 36
Inaugurated in 2010 this venue takes its name from the old church
of San Giovanni; it is the first area of the Diocesan Museum of
the Cathedral. In the Spazio San Giovanni precious artworks can
be admired, such as the gothic wooden choir of the Cathedral by
Baldino da Surso (1477), silverware and paraments, sculptures
from the 14th century and gravestones from bishops, as well as
the fresco from Gandolfino with the “Madonna della Barca”. The
visit leads to the crypt dating back to the 8th century. Of the four
capitals the Corinthian ones were from the reconstruction of Asti
by Theodoric the Great, the others go back to early middle ages
(8th - 9th century).

DOMUS ROMANA
Via Varrone 30 - 1st century AD
Beneath this inhabited building are the archaeological remains
of a patrician house. Of particular interest are the floors with the
mosaic centrepiece made using the opus tesselatum technique
together with the opus sectile method, delimited by a herring bone
pattern internally and externally with a plaited pattern. The black
and white mosaic is decorated with geometric figures of coloured
marble alternated with animals and water plants. Nearby is the
opening of the oven used to heat the house using the interspaces
in the flooring (known as “hypocaustum” heating). On the surface
of one wall, there are traces of ancient decorations which must at
one time have been very elaborate.

TAPESTRY MUSEUM ARAZZERIA SCASSA
The Museum is being moved to Palazzo Alfieri, Corso Alfieri 375
The tapestry museum was founded by Ugo Scassa in 1957 in
the renovated rooms of the historical Charterhouse of Valmanera.
The laboratory produces tapestries using the ancient technique of
the high-warp but the subjects are cartoons of modern contemporary artists (Casorati, De Chirico, Cagli, Klee, Mirò, Kandijnski
and others). The combination between a technique which has remained the same over the centuries and that of modern day sensibility creates unique and precious works of art. Many are displayed in prestigious seats and others remain to adorn the gallery
of the museum where one can mingle after having observed the
patient work of the laboratory workers.

SYNAGOGUE AND JEWISH MUSEUM
Via Ottolenghi 8
The Synagogue of Asti presents a simple neoclassic exterior with
an entrance framed by four columns which hold a gable bearing
a good wish message. Internally there are three naves with traditional arched ceilings. At the end of the presbytery is the Aran or
Holy Arc, made of ebony by the famous Bonzanigo in 1809: it is a
wall cupboard with eight gold sculptured panels. Each panel has
a different symbol. The rooms that were once the winter temple
host a museum with the liturgical items and other utensils to testify the Hebrew presence in Asti and the multimedia museum “Una

PALAZZO CIVICO
Piazza San Secondo
The building represents one of the first projects of the architect Benedetto Alfieri (1727) on a pre-existing medieval base: the facade
is characterized by the three rows of openings, in which the central
block stands out; it was modified following the Nordic, Austrian
and Bavarian, examples. The stairway (on one side of which you
can admire a reproduction of a map of Asti from the Theatrum
Sabaudiae of 1682) leads up to the Hall of Honour.

HISTORICAL ARCHIVES OF THE MUNICIPALITY
Via C. Massaia 5
Hosted in a building of the 16th century, (one of few examples of
renaissance architecture in Asti) the historical archives museum
conserves documents from the 10th century and the valuable medieval codes such as the Codex Astensis (in miniature) and the
famous Codice Catenato relating to the town life. One room is dedicated to the Palio of Asti with a display of antique and significant
documents regarding the Palio race dating from the historian Ventura who was the first to authenticate the Palio back in 1275. The
Photo Gallery is rich with documents from the second half of the

PALAZZO DEL PODESTà
Corner of Via S. Incisa - Via dei Cappellai - (13th century)
Only a few metres from Piazza San Secondo, in the heart of the
city, the fortified house known as Palazzo del Podestà is a beautiful
example of a public medieval building with the typical characteristics of Asti: the frieze in terracotta, stripes in terracotta and sandstone and the corner stone (sandstone block, in which coats of
arms, plants and other symbols were carved). Beautiful is the hall
on the ground floor, with the cross vaults with ribs in terracotta,
held by a single central pillar with capital in sandstone.

Via G. Carducci 65 - (13th century)
Beautiful fortified house from the end of the 13th century; it once
belonged to one of the richest families in Asti and comprised a
tower, but has undergone various changes during the centuries. Unchanged are the six gothic windows and the frieze-cornice in terracotta, which can also be noted in other buildings of this period. The
central door is from the 17th century, while the lower side openings
in medieval times gave access to the large cellar rooms, where the
merchants kept their warehouses.

TEATRO ALFIERI
Via al Teatro 2
Inaugurated in 1860 the new social theatre, dedicated to Vittorio
Alfieri, was constructed following a project of Engineer Domenico
Svanascini; a horse shoe construction with four tiers of boxes for a
total of 103 and the open gallery. The decorations of the ceiling and
of the stage with the apotheosis of Vittorio Alfieri were carried out
by Francesco Gonin. The total capacity was of 2050 people. After
many years of restoration works, the theatre has again acquired
the splendour of the past and now hosts a season of prestige and a
festival of contemporary drama.

shopping...
CORSO ALFIERI
Despite being a town rich with history and monuments, in Asti it is possible
to wander amid the towers, churches and palaces and to also dedicate some
time for shopping.
Back in the Medieval period the town centre was full of artisans and commercial activities, concentrated around the Piazza San Secondo whilst the
area around the Cathedral was reserved to the residences of the rich and
nobles (the part still known as the “Noble Enclosure”). Still today the shopping area extends from the pedestrian central Corso Vittorio Alfieri to Corso
Dante and from the streets which expand from Piazza San Secondo (Via
Cavour, Via Garibaldi, Via Pelletta).
Between one purchase and another, one is obliged to stop for a glass of ASTI
in the cafés of the town centre and the many delicatessen shops of the town
where one can taste the local delicious sweets and typical artisan nougat.
A piece of advice: wander down into the narrow medieval streets, many
small artisan shops rich with art and gift items are waiting to be discovered!

PIAZZA ALFIERI
events...
Asti has a long-standing commercial tradition dating back to the early Medieval period. In those days the markets were divided according to the products (the hay market, the herb market, the wood market, the wine market)
and were held in Piazza San Secondo and the nearby roads and squares.
Today the main market is held every Wednesday and Saturday in the central
Piazza Alfieri, Piazza Libertà and in Campo del Palio (foodstuffs only in the
mornings and all day for other products).
In Piazza Catena it is possible to purchase seasonal products directly from
the local agricultural producers in the colourful square near the Cathedral
every morning.
An elegant structure built in 1925 hosts, in Piazza Libertà, the indoor market
which offers typical products and wines every day.
On the second Sunday of each month Piazza Libertà hosts the agro alimentary exhibition “Asti, products, tastes e flavours”” and under the porticos of
Piazza Anfossi and Piazza Libertà local producers display their wines, salami,
cheese, honey, etc.
Every second Saturday in Piazza San Secondo the “Agro Arte” market is held
with its eco-friendly biological and artisan products.
Every fourth Sunday of the month the antique market is a must in the town
centre with over 150 exhibitors.
The first Wednesday in May features the largest market, the Carolingia Fair.
This covers almost all of the town centre and originates not from Charlemagne (by legend) but from the end of the 14th century when for the eight
days preceding and the eight days following the feast of the Patron Saint, Saint
Secondo, this large fair would bring together merchants from all over Italy.
