Copernicus and University of Ferrara
Copernicus arrived in Ferrara in 1503 to become a doctorate
in canonic law at the end of his studies in Italy (Bologna). In
that period, Ferrara University welcomed many students
from different universities and from abroad. The town was a
major cultural centre of the Italian Renaissance. Ercole I

d'Este reigned at that time, Ariosto was writing his octaves,
famous painters beautified the palaces and Lucrezia Borgia
showed off all her beauty.
The debate about the Points (chosen from Decreta and
Decretalia) developed in the bishop's palace - each bishop
was the chancellor of the University.
After the debate, the first supervisor handed Copernicus the
doctorate insignia: a book, first closed so to let him discover
the truth by himself without external help and then opened
to learn from the wisdom of the others. He slipped a ring on
his finger and put a beret on him. Finally Copernicus was
declared doctor in canonical law and his first supervisor
kissed him as a symbol of peace.
After the ceremony, all of them went to the Faculty of Law at
San Francesco hall where Copernicus likely offered a
traditional small reception called Conventus privatus.
