After five years spent in Renzo Piano’s firm, in 1992 he founded in Paris Mario Cucinella Architects, which he moved later to Bologna, where it currently is. Thanks to his solid experience in architectural planning, industrial design and technological research with a focus on environmental sustainability and through collaborations with universities and research programs published by the European Commission, his activity is nowadays one of the most important and present in Italy and abroad. MR. CUCINELLA, WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY MEAN AND HOW DOES (OR SHOULD) ITS INTEGRATION WITH ETHICS IN BEHAVIOUR AND A POSITIVE SOCIAL IMPACT HAPPEN? The energy and the use made of it is a great creative opportunity that has traced the history of architecture all along and that today requires to be interpreted in light of technologies creating a new bond with our tradition (no more nostalgia). We need to see, after a long time, sustainability as an ethical attitude which transcends the boundaries of the project and the building to enter the social dimension. It’s about doing an action that could produce a benefit for everyone or, better, that would not cause damage to others. This dimension of making architecture requires a new ethical dimension that gives to our work a new social dimension and a key role for future transformations. The focus on space, living, the pleasure of seeing a beautiful building, of using a square, a garden, a road, all becomes a commitment, a role so important that should involve even those who continue to consider building just like a personal business. Hence, the birth of a new and useful role in the development of the theme of sustainability. Sustainability is not comprehensive, it is by definition something that is not generic, not abstract, something that belongs to a place, to a culture and that we must defend, even if it requires a huge effort. Sustainability is a vision which must always be redefined, is the solution to individual problems, to individual sites, not a commodification of architecture wherever and however, sustainability is not a style but a subject, it is contrary to the totalitarian colonization of places with principles of useless efficiency and a false language of modernity, which are too easy excuses to justify horrific appearance. Sustainability is the opposite of foreignness. It is not a model to export, but a problem to be solved through an understanding of places, it is against the principle of indifference, of repetition, of vulgarization of the universal language. It is close to the principles of biodiversity, of empathy, of proximity. Close to the identity of places, to our own vocations. It is something we have to investigate, study and understand. The principle of export of an economic model represented by buildings all equal to themselves, with people working in the same way anywhere, if, on one hand, has created expectations of GRANDANGOLO se da una parte ha creato un’aspettativa di modernità e di sviluppo dall’altro ha cancellato ogni identità, ogni principio di difesa della propria cultura e paesaggio. As if biodiversity is no longer a value, a source of wealth, but something to flatten. The birth of the Ecodistricts must not be considered an example of beautiful life out of contexts, but become an opportunity to make the rest to regenerate and transform itself in a different way, too. The continuing demand for low-cost social housing, applications that are growing from the bottom because people do not find an answer in the market, is an important sign of change. And the market will have to address this through a new architecture, a new vision of living. There is nothing worse than imagining an architecture only for ourselves without thinking that the true value of living will be the ability to figure out a way to live together, and this will not lead to any aesthetic sacrifice and will open a necessary dialogue and participation in the project . It is the capacity for dialogue and participation that will give an answer to the problems of cities and citizens, it is only through a strong political action that we will be able to heal, rehabilitate and improve our cities, forever divided because of a dangerous ignorance of the ties between history and contemporary society. TRA GLI ULTIMI PROGETTI DELLO STUDIO RICORDIAMO QUELLO CHE HA VINTO, NEL 2010, IL CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE PER LA PROGETTAZIONE DEL NUOVO CAMPUS DELL’ISTITUTO EUROPEO DI DESIGN A TORINO. COME SI ARTICOLA E CHE TIPO DI STRATEGIE BIOCLIMATICHE VERRANNO ADOTTATE PER PORTARE A ZERO LE EMISSIONI DI CO2? AMONG THE LATEST PROJECTS OF HIS FIRM WE REMEMBER THE ONE THAT WON IN 2010 THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION TO DESIGN THE NEW CAMPUS OF THE EUROPEAN INSTITUTE OF DESIGN IN TURIN. WHAT DOES IT CONSIST IN AND WHAT KIND OF BIOCLIMATIC STRATEGIES WILL BE ADOPTED TO ACHIEVE ZERO CO2 EMISSIONS? We won the international competition to design the new campus of the European Institute of Design. Of the total area of 12,700 m², 9,500 m² will be used to house the library, reading rooms, offices and accommodations for students, while parking space and gardens will occupy the rest of the surface. The tower intended for student accommodations is an important architectural landmark and creates a visual link with the city of Turin. Alongside the old warehouses, renovated and improved, low-roofed parking facilities will be built, the roof of which serving as a raised public space with walkways, gardens, fountains and areas for sports. The bioclimatic strategies that we adopted achieve the goal of zero CO2 emissions; the photovoltaic system on the roof is designed to cover the electricity needs of school and accommodations, the skin of the building creates a shield against summer solar radiation and noise pollution, the vegetation and the treatment of outdoor spaces smooth over microclimate effects helping the passive cooling, the natural light is optimized, there are systems for the collection of rainwater, under floor air conditioning and controlled mechanical ventilation, natural ventilation in spring and autumn. Wide-angle SPOSTIAMOCI IN PALESTINA, UN TERRITORIO DOVE LA CARENZA DELL’ACQUA E IL PREZZO ELEVATO DELL’ENERGIA SONO PROBLEMATICHE PREGNANTI. IL SUO STUDIO PRESENTA UN MODELLO DI SCUOLA DESTINATA AI GIOVANI RESIDENTI NEI CAMPI PROFUGHI PALESTINESI. È UN EDIFICIO OFF GRID , UNO DEI PUNTI DI SVOLTA DELL’ARCHITETTURA SOSTENIBILE. COME FUNZIONA? LET’S MOVE TO PALESTINE, A TERRITORY WHERE THE WATER SHORTAGE AND THE HIGH PRICE OF ENERGY ARE WEIGHTY ISSUES. HIS FIRM PRESENTS A PROJECT FOR A SCHOOL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING IN PALESTINIAN REFUGEE CAMPS. IT IS AN OFF-GRID BUILDING, ONE OF THE TURNING POINTS OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE. HOW DOES IT WORK? The project proposes a school building suitable for young people living in Palestinian refugee camps. The idea is developed taking into account the current economic and social conditions in the Palestinian territories, where water shortage and high energy prices are everyday issues. The project is about the construction of an off-grid building, disconnected from water and electricity networks and using only renewable resources (rainwater, solar and wind energy). The construction system is based on three distinct elements: a concrete slab - which includes rainwater collection system - as foundation, pillars made of concrete precast components - commonly used in the construction of water pipe - filled with the earth derived from excavation and a projecting roof that serves as bioclimatic moderator. The classrooms, in the shape of a chimney, are designed to facilitate natural ventilation within the building. The proposed project is not simply about a building, but also promotes the use of affordable, locally available materials as well as simple building systems, providing a kit for an easy and low-cost construction that can be achieved by the refugees themselves “LA CITTÀ DEI CREATIVI”, OSSIA UN MASTERPLAN DI UN’AREA 2KM A NORD DI BOLOGNA CHE SI ESTENDE A TUTTA LA CITTÀ. SO CHE LE FORME DEGLI EDIFICI, COPERTI DI VERDE, SONO DETERMINATE DAL PAESAGGIO E ISPIRATE AL LINGUAGGIO DELLA TERRA. COME VIENE MIGLIORATA LA QUALITÀ URBANA? “THE CREATIVE CITY”, A MASTERPLAN FOR AN AREA 2 KM NORTH OF BOLOGNA WHICH EXTENDS TO THE WHOLE CITY. I KNOW THAT THE SHAPES OF THE BUILDINGS, COVERED WITH GREEN, ARE DETERMINED BY THE LANDSCAPE AND INSPIRED BY THE LANGUAGE OF THE EARTH. HOW IS URBAN QUALITY IMPROVED? This masterplan is designed on three areas with three different functions connected by a common landscape: green dunes create a scene of great visual impact. The shapes of the buildings, covered with green, are determined by the landscape and inspired by the language of the earth: “ The Crater “ (arena for major events with a flexible surface surrounded by bleachers), “The Volcano “ (a village with a mix of residences, creative workshops and trade centres) and “The Stalagmites” (towers for trade, offices and residences). The project is part of a masterplan that extends to the whole city: ten cycle paths radiating from the centre, in line with the historic gates, manage the historical evolution of the city, developing the existing potential along ten pedestrian and cycle branches. In each of these, green areas are created - or protected when already existing - to improve urban quality. The project is supported by a feasibility study based on the EU 2020 timetable on sustainability (-20 % reduction in consumption, +20 % renewable energy, -20% of CO2 production).
