Attività scientifica.
L’attività scientifica ha riguardato diversi campi della Chimica. Nelle ricerche testimoniate da
più di 190 articoli su riviste internazionali con peer-reviewing ha toccato vari campi della chimica
Inorganica, Organica Biologica e dei materiali utilizzando differenti tecniche sperimentali di tipo
spettroscopico e computazionale di tipo classico e quantistico e fornendo contributi originali alla
interpretazione di diversi fenomeni chimici anche di carattere generale riguardanti le relazioni tra la
struttura molecolare e le proprietà biologiche.
Altri interessi hanno riguardato l’uso di complessi Metallorganici nelle applicazioni delle terapie
fotodinamiche e come materiali nelle tecnologie LASER, dei cristalli liquidi.
Più recentemente gli interessi scientifici si sono rivolti allo studio di composti di coordinazione
per applicazioni in diodi Organici Emettitori di Luce (OLED), per la generazione di corrente
elettrica in pannelli solari e in generale nelle tecnologie per il risparmio energetico.
Nell’ambito delle attività sperimentali ha svolto ricerche con l’uso di spettroscopie NMR, EPR,
RAMAN, IR, Ultravioletta e Visibile sia in assorbimento che in emissione e di tecniche LASER
time resolved.
Le tecniche computazionali utilizzate hanno riguardato sia metodi di Meccanica classica
(Meccanica Molecolare, Dinamica Molecolare, Moltecarlo) per i quali ha sviluppato originali codici
in linguaggio FORTRAN per lo studio di molecole biologicamente attive, che di Meccanica
Quantistica (Metodi Hartree-Fock semiempirici ed ab initio, Density Functional Theory, Metodi
Post Hartree-Fock).
Queste attività sono state svolte anche in collaborazione con i gruppi di ricerca dei dipartimenti
di Chimica dell'Università di Cagliari, Bari, Cosenza, Firenze, Milano (Politecnico) e Milano
Bicocca, Padova e Napoli, nonché in collaborazione con gruppi di ricerca del Dipartimento di
Chimica dell'Universita’ della British Columbia (Vancouver) BC, Canada e dell'Università di
Leicester.
Come membro della Societa' Chimica Italiana (#4561) e dell'American Chemical Society
(#2173794) organizzatore del XXVI National Congress of Inorganic Chemistry (Maratea 28 June-2
July 1998) and dell' 8th International Conference on the Applications of Density Functional Theory
to Chemistry and Physics (Roma, 6-10 September 1999).

As full professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the University della Basilicata, I have
been responsible for several scientific projects in inorganic and materials chemistry and for the
organization of the laboratory course for inorganic chemistry and in charge of several important
roles for both the organization and the promotion of research:

In 2000 Rettore of the Universita' della Basilicata (Academic University Dean) and in 2002
confirmed until the end of 2006.

From 1994 to 2000 member of the Directive Board of the National Consortium for Chemistry
and Technology of Materials and responsible for research projects for the section related to
Materials Chemistry with funding coming from the Italian Ministry of University, Scientific
Research and Technology (MURST).

Computational chemistry laboratory in inorganic and materials chemistry devoted to molecular
materials, which was supported by the MURST with a twin laboratory at the University of
Calabria directed by Professor Mauro Ghedini.

Elected Director of the Department of Chemistry in the years 1992-1994 and for a second time
in the years 1995-1997 (no more than two times are allowed).

In 1996 I established the “Laboratory for the synthesis and characterization of innovative
materials” (LaMI), in the Chemistry Department

In 1987 promoter and co-founder of the Interfaculty Center for the use and application of
information technology Services (Centro Interfacoltà per i Servizi Informatici e Telematici,
CISIT) and then President of the board of faculty representatives in 1994-1998 and for a second
time until 2000.

Member (elected among full professors) in the University della Basilicata administrative council
in 1986 and a second time in 1989 (no more than two times are allowed).


Scientific Activity
Co-author over 180 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and many national and
international scientific meeting presentations.
As undergraduate at the University of Naples, “Federico II”, the research activity in organic
synthesis was devoted to studying 1-3 dipoles on activated ethylenic bonds as a tool for etherocyclic
synthesis and their photochemistry.
In the following, the attention was focused on the development of spectroscopic techniques for
the structural characterization of molecules, using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in liquidcrystal solvents and in general NMR techniques for the investigation of interaction phenomena in
solution and developed original Fortran codes for the analysis and interpretation of the experimental
data. In this fields we obtained the first full molecular structure of penta-atomic etherocycles in
solution and characterization of weak interaction in solution and small peptide conformational
analysis.
In the field of Computational Chemistry the interest has been devoted to methods based on semiempirical, ab initio and Density Functional Theory for studying and characterizing transition metal
complexes, molecule-surface interactions, weak interactions and reaction mechanisms whereas
Molecular Dynamics was used to study biologically active molecules: in particular opioid and sweet
peptides and ’ substituted ones for restricted conformational accessibility and at the atomistic
level thermodynamic properties and nanostructure organization of discotic liquid crystals.
Further interest is related to Materials Chemistry, studying coordination compounds with
conducting properties (molecular metals), “Langmuir-Blodgett” films and liquid-crystal of metal
coordinated compounds based on peripherally substituted porphyrazine complexes with transition
metals and lanthanides. Organic Light emitting diodes as Aluminum tris(quinoline-8-olate), Ir(III)
complexes as dopant in OLED and molecular switches and non-linear optical material based on
dithiolene-like complexes have been the subject of more recent experimental and computational
work that gave some contribution to the understanding of the electronic and environmental
contribution to the emission mechanism of these materials.
As member of the Italian Chemical Society (#4561) and of the American Chemical Society
(#2173794) I organized the XXVI National Congress of Inorganic Chemistry (Maratea 28 June-2
July 1998) and the 8th International Conference on the Applications of Density Functional Theory to
Chemistry and Physics (Roma, 6-10 September 1999).
