During the American stops on the Tre Bicchieri Tour and the Italian Wines
Roadshow in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Seattle, in the Gambero
Rosso tasting rooms, this year we are introducing an exceptional guest: we
welcome the Consorzio del Custoza DOC, the Consortium for a great white
wine from the province of Verona.
Custoza wine comes from a territory with special characteristics, the hills of morainic soil that rise on the edge of the southeastern bank of Lake Garda, Italy’s
most important lake. Thanks to its unique microclimate, garganega, trebbianello, bianca fernanda, incrocio Manzoni and riesling grapes produce a white
wine of substance and character. Although the zone is comprised of fewer than
1500 hectares, over 400 small vignerons work their vineyards, many of whom
vinify their own products.
In recent years, this wine has seen an extraordinary growth in quality. It is one of
Italy’s best white wines when young, but it becomes irresistibly seductive when
its color, as it ages, turns to gold. Savory, deep and complex, it offers notes of
fruit and hints of saffron and spices when mature.
It is ideal with Mediterranean cucina, but its versatility makes it perfect to drink
with delicate meat dishes and many Asian cuisines, such as Japanese, Chinese
and Thai.
