Then in July this year signals of recovery arrived from the USA that revealed that there was a growth of 1.7% in the GDP for the second quarter which for the first time included calculations of intangible assets such as books, works of art, films, music, TV programmes, photography, authors' rights and patents. Newspapers and magazines all over the world from Business Week to La Repubblica (with an editorial by Massimo Vincenzi on 29 July last), were immediately effusive in their acclamation of the epoch-breaking news. The Bureau of Economic Analysis, which draws up the the main economic statistics, recognized that it has always underestimated creativity and innovation and considered intangible assets to be cost elements rather than balance sheet items on the credit side. Even without the need for an immediate gain, the new American GDP considered things like writing a book, producing a film or composing a song to be investments. The "return" can be calculated in the future. And in fact, when George Lucas directed Star wars in 1977, no one could have imagined the amount of money that the film would go on to generate. Therefore, appropriate screening is necessary in order to be able to decide if a work of art, a TV series or a book will be a flop or a success, and what the economic return will be. Without taking account of the fact that there is also depreciation in the field of creativity: certainly ideas do not break or wear out like machines or objects but they can be copied, fall out of fashion or be overtaken by others. What happens with music is the same as for scientific and technological research, as well as for other creativity sectors, to the point that the Bureau of Economic Analysis itself assigns different amortization rates to each of these activities: 10% for pharmaceutical research, 36% for the design of IT systems, 9 % for films and 27 % for music. u una mezza rivoluzione culturale già quando, nel 2009, Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel per l’Economia nel 2001, assieme ad altri due famosi economisti, Amartya Sen (Nobel per l’Economia 1998) e Jean-Paul Fitoussi, presentarono all’allora presidente Nicolas Sarkozy un rapporto relativo a nuovi strumenti di misurazione del benessere non solo economico di un Paese. Giovanna Grossato t was a virtual revolution when in 2009 Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel laureate for Economic in 2001, along with two other famous economists, Amartya Sen (Nobel Economics winner in 1998) and Jean-Paul Fitoussi, presented the then president, Nicolas Sarkozy, with a report on new tools for measuring a country's well-being not just in economic terms. No longer is the GDP weighed down by utility bills and travels tickets but now even includes greetings cards, which never go out of fashion, and TV products, though with different depreciation rates: over the long term, sports and reality no longer generate income while some series obtain cult status and continue to live (and gain) over time with DVDs and on-line subscriptions. In his speech relaunching the economy, Obama himself highlighted education, the mother of all the arts, as among the central factors for eliminating class differences. The creative class will therefore by able to save the economy. BRUNO WALPOTH vive e lavora a Ortisei (BZ) www.walpoth.com 4 5 of articulate themselves in space – were the god, the king, the champion athlete, the poet or the hero. Not simulacra but figures that are truly and directly invested with the sacredness of the symbols whose role they represented. The faces all resemble one another, imbued with a character of proportioned beauty, faces that are idealized just like the bodies in which the relationship of each part harmonizes with the whole. A little at a time it was no longer so: sculpture, Roman first of all and then Medieval Christian, Baroque and nineteenth century - began to represent real people in the historical immanence of their being. Bruno Walpoth’s modern man, drawn out of wood as if from his cocoon, seems to be able to unite two very distant worlds that in different materials create the abstract idea of an Olympian and transcendent humanity and that of the unrepeatable and concrete uniqueness of the individual. What comes forth from the terse figures that spring from the artist’s chisel is not ideal beauty, nor the expressionism of a particular condition; it is a not a schematic and minimalist form of the body that is charged with interpreting space, nor the romantic narration of a personality, that appears in Bruno Walpoth’s sculptures. Instead it is the “ontological” quality of man that is represented in the bodies and in the faces that the sculptor creates with the use of a traditional and very old technique, typical of the valleys from which he comes. That intangible but easily identifiable attribute does, of course, refer to being in general and to its unchangeable structures, but also to a contemporary essential condition of man, objective and real. Bei Mir | 2012 Legno di tiglio / Linden wood cm 176 x 51 x 38 Walpoth fixes the moment of existence in the absolute of an instant: this differs from American hyperrealism in the seventies where with the recovery of technical skills and the artist’s imitative abilities they provocatively challenged the historical avant-gardes which, instead, had negated their validity, and which sought to provide responses to the restlessness of their time by deciding to isolate themselves in a virtuosity that was capable of creating subjects that were apparently identical to those of everyday life, and also characterized by the same defects. This instant is one that excludes all the others and, in the silent universe that encloses it, becomes the only possible and eternally existing “one”. BRUNO WALPOTH Is reality inside the wood? by G i ovann a G r ossa t o A profound sense of solitude and of isolation permeates the figures carved in lime wood, pregnant with a completely contemporary sensibility: isolation and remoteness that do not necessarily represent an afflicted or suffering humanity. On the contrary, the silence that shrouds the faces and figures appears like a protective aura that is capable of separating them from the din, and presages an absolute peace lapped by a sort of eternity that makes ethereal and subtle the similarities that are already ephebi of the subjects depicted. They stand upright or lie flat, enigmatic with their gaze turned inwards, in a constant reflection of memory, if not indeed of nostalgia: equally distant from the intimist pathos and from the intense statuesque cold of an academic model. What “reality” does an artist represent, with the various tech- nical means that he has chosen to express it? Is it perhaps what he is looking at, in the outside world, with tens and hundreds of other people who see the same thing? Is it the attempt to transform the human figure and objects through painting and sculpture in accordance with a mental template that has been built from experience? Is it selecting an idea, an archetype, an absolute and autonomous exemplar of reality, a primitive form whose manifestations of the concrete world are simply phenomenal epiphanies? Bruno Walpoth’s sculpture seems to close a circle that originated in the ancient world in which the great civilizations sprang forth: the Mesopotamian, the Egyptian and the Aegean-Mediterranean. In them, representation, especially sculptural, of the human figure sought to give concrete form not to one particular personality but to an abstract and general principle that could interpret the entire human race. The statues of wood, marble, terracotta or bronze and also of gold and ivory, initially depicted in a frontal and upright positions – often with a severe and solemn attitude that only with the passage of the centuries acquired the ability 6 Mateo 2011 Legno di tiglio - Linden wood cm 180 x 52 x 30 Bruno Walpoth was born in Ortisei (Bolzano) in1959. NELIO SONEGO vive e lavora a Concordia Saggitaria (VE) [email protected] 9 NELIO SONEGO Noetics in art by M ar co S t o p p a F or centuries western thought has attributed a substantially positive connotation to the concept of "full" in contrast with its opposite "emptiness", the latter being understood in a contemptuous sense, as the total absence of things, as nothingness. There is no or almost no exception to this in European art which reflects the triumph of the desire of artists to fill every part of the painting that they instinctively see as empty space in a sort of permanent horror vacui. Well before quantum mechanics and Einstein's relativity, which revalued the concept of "empty space" and attributed physical properties to it, Zen Buddhist philosophy developed the sense of emptiness intended as an infinite wealth of possibilities. According to yin yang, what exists (the universe) originated what "does not exist": if fullness is not the negation of emptiness then empty space does not exist. The intrinsic relationship between the space redeemed in this way and the things that "inhabit" it constitute the founding principle of the pictorial and mental investigations of the artist, Nelio Sonego. The space (and the time) conceived by Sonego is infinite space in which multiplicity coexists: it is not possible to imagine the existence of tangible objects without finding oneself in space and time. The artist, with his mind, his body and his spirits is also an intrinsic part of this whole. Kant declared: "... space is the necessary condition for our permanence and our stability." Inside it, the artist's intervention cannot but be a "perceptive becoming aware" (Merleau-Ponty) of space and of the things that fill it, intellectual intuition that precedes logical-dialectic thought. Among his first works, dating back to the end of the seventies and start of the eighties, Nelio Sonego scrutinizes the delicate relationship between the gesture, understood as the vibration of mental energy in rapid execution, and the space in which it is located. The outcome of the gesture, the sign, qualifies the space as such and renders its infinity evident. It is not important if this sign translates itself into a straight line or into triangles with arched sides (the series of Trisangoli from the end of the nineties), into fluid painting with angles (Angoarcoli from the nineties) or into essential geometrical forms such as the rectangle (already present in the Rettangolare Verticale series from the eighties), what counts for the artist is intervening directly in the dilated space - better still if done directly on the white wall such as the Angoarcoli created for the A arte Studio Invernizzi gallery and transfer the energy of one's own life into concrete images. Rettangolareverticale | 2003 Acrilico su tela - Acrylic on canvas cm100 x 70 The research in these images, in equilibrium between concreteness and the gesture, undertaken almost thirty years ago by the artist, is reflected in his latest creative stage, begun in 2003 in a series of works entitled Orizzontaleverticale which preludes the spatial relativity of the work and of the observer. Conceived so has to have no direction, the work identifies itself with the white-light space of the support, pierced by rays of colour soaked in light, by warm and cold lines, interwoven, superimposed, contrasted, dilated, and condensed giving them power and dynamic sense. Sonego digs beyond the secret (Secretizie, as his friend, the poet Carlo Invernizzi, would say, intended as getting beyond the limit of the visible) of the colour/line/space relationship - primary and structural values of vision - and resolves everything that is given in nature such as height and width through the geometrical figure of the rectangle, with the reduction of the complexity of the material to minimum terms. Orizzontaleverticale | 2012 Acrilico su alluminio - Acrylic on aluminum cm 300 x 115 x 30 Museo d’Arte Contemporanea all’aperto,Morterone he task of line-colour-light is to return the infinite sensations of depth, mutation, and kinetic dynamism and reproduce itself in images in sequence in space-time. The use of spray colour produces transparencies that accentuate the effect of three-dimensional instability of the image. The variables in this operation are infinite: the fluid displacement of the luminous skein passes from the centre of the work towards the outside, and broadens the field of action as it expands the pictorial space well beyond its borders, right up to the latest experimentations where the bands of light materialize in the coloured fluorescent tubes that occupy the observers physical space. It represented an element of innovation and led to a real turning point towards 'modern' and sometimes revolutionary languages and sensibilities. Lotta di centauri Giorgio De Chirico Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Roma - National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome 14 It also influenced the evolution of the Italian artistic environment to the point that Vittorio Pica, arguably the most up-to-date and international Italian critic of the time, remarked in 1901 with unquestioned effectiveness on how Italian artists, old and young, were gripped by a sort of "Nordic obsession": "Visitors who enter some of the rooms in the Italian section of this fourth Venice show for the first time and who halt to look with particular attention at the various canvasses, large and small, carefully arranged on the walls, cannot but note that many of our painters, especially from Veneto or Lombardy, are manifestly profoundly influenced by Nordic art, to the point that they reject some of the traditional features of Italian art, and present themselves disguised as Scots, Scandinavian or Germans." 15 Starting from this intuition of Pica's, who was also Secretary General of the Biennale, for the first time a great exhibition intends to document the extent to which the "Nordics" – intended in the broadest sense of the terms in line with Pica as Böcklin, Hodler, Klimt, Klinger, von Stuck, Khnopff and the Scandinavians of various schools such as Zorn, Larsson or even Munch – influenced the Italians who surrendered to their attraction or embraced their suggestiveness with conviction and effectiveness. For this great review, the curator, Giandomenico Romanelli, has selected a series of fundamental works along the lines of the 'Nordic' selection of the early Biennali, specifically those which, suggested by some of the recognized leaders – most notably Arnold Böcklin – gave rise to artistic and cultural decisions and paths that would also indelibly mark the shared path and the different trends in Italian art in the early twentieth century. The landscape, the domestic interiors, the masks and the portraits provide the fundamental themes around which the exhibition is developed, an intellectual project even more than an artistic one therefore, and of enormous interest, rich in infinite facets and the fruit of highly diversified sensibilities. And seductive precisely for this reason. Romanelli writes: "just to mention one of the most intricate knots and also the most fascinating, simply think of the tangle of themes agitated around personalities such as Böcklin and Klinger; and then however, though along different paths, around Stuck and De Chirico, Savinio and Klimt himself; and the literary and philosophical linkages from Nietzche to Burckhardt; but also Bachofen and von Hofmannsthal and even D'Annunzio. Girotondo Franz von Stuck Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Roma National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome 16 Here the esoteric cipher gets mixed in with poets and visionaries with an insatiable thirst for pagan classicism, not to mention plungings of consciousness into mystical abysses rather than into black and blasphemous religiosity such as in Khnopff and especially in Rops.” For Italy it is sufficient to mention the names of De Carolis and the Dannunziani, De Maria, the great Sartorio and of Laurenti and on up to Bonazza and Sacchi, to finish with Wolf Ferrari, an elegant and refined provincial of great luxury. Un catalogo che, nella sua ricognizione, potrebbe apparire la trincea nella quale l’artista si ripara o un ribollente schedario di emozioni, mentre in realtà quelle immagini rappresentano tanti tradimenti della buona fede della 18 POZZO | 2010 Acrilico su carta - Acrylic on paper cm 100 x 70 CASSATA DI PAGLIA | 2010 Acrilico su carta - Acrylic on paper cm 100 x 70 19 Works enter into the imagined, but also into the experienced, i.e. the intimacy, of the artist. by MIRELLA BRUGNEROTTO The chaos and the provisional nature of a d/evolution interrupted for the benefit of a moment remain suspended inside this frame. There is something in this art that recalls Schifano and Pop Art, but here the quotidian is not joy but rather desperate, almost violent, irony because of these decisive signs and those almost bitter colours: there is a world which is coming to pieces, prey of an electricity, of a vortex which destroys is and does not save the objects, our consoling fetishes. We are suffocating in our consumption while we are running another way, whatever it is, certainly towards a destination that we cannot even imagine, which no map has yet identified with certainty, which is only a myriad of signals that are very often premonitions of a terrible end. by G i ova nni Tri m e ri Right from the title that the artist gave to her show staged in Feltre in June last year it is possible to launch reflections on the work of this Treviso artist with an original stylistic key rich in dynamism, both chromatic and compositional "NORI", the title of the exhibition, is the name of a seaweed that is widely used for everyday cooking, especially in Japan. Seaweed does not have a rigid body, it is extremely ductile and in the end it becomes a mush. It could already be a metaphor for art in daily existence and of the dissolution of our quotidian being that often arises to become the basic motif in Mirella Brugnerotto's painting. Here it is possible to grasp the obstinacy or the persistence of the ephemeral, of the temporary, of what rapidly deteriorates, everything, in short, that rotates around the vortex of our days and that sparkles in our evening phosphenes. Promptness and acute sensibility are required for grasping all this, mastership is necessary for managing to repropose not simply as a recording but as an exciting element. And so in these works is a reality that resists, even if by now it has been reduced to a tangle of signs - colours,, it is matter that is unable to stratify as every single component , be it earth, water, fire or light, of even paper, metal or wood will not accept immobility; it will not agree to surrender itself to stillness of only fleetingly, just enough to be snapped. Dynamism and irony interweave then, testifying to the precariousness but also imperfect decipherability of life that Mirella reflects at various stages along its articulated path. The artist gathers, and then disseminates the many objects we surround ourselves with everyday: from boxes to domestic appliances, but also thoughts and signals, fragments of places and occasions. A catalogue which, in its recognition, the trench in which the artist take shelter could appear, or a boiling catalogue of emotions, while in reality these images constitute the betrayals of the good faith of Brugnerotto herself. If they strip her in the eyes of others they perhaps reveal more than she would want. This is because, as McLuhan says, the objects we use, the clothes we wear, and the prostheses that help us to live are only an extension of our personality. The everyday objects are re/created by Mirella Brugnerotto, but require a title, as if they were a frame to be circumscribed in, at least for the time during which the visitor enjoys viewing them. In any case it is true that despite the many semantic nuances that the term "shadow" embraces - the Devoto Oli Italian dictionary cites 21 - they do not exhaust the conceptual profondities from which the Paesaggi (2000-2008), the Serre (2008-2009) and the Astrazioni (starting from 2010) produced by Lucca emerge Though pertinent, the reference is not sufficient either to the tòpos of the phantasma or "ghost" (Zanchetta), an entity close to the shadow, «an imaginary product that contains the gratification of an unconscious desire». Shadows, ghosts, shrouds, evanescences, residues: the interrogation of the pertinence of the metaphor, far from being a futile exercise in classification, is the consistent consequence of the contemplative imperative that Lucca's paintings communicate to the observer. As is often the case, the tension 24 towards contemplation does not come from complexity but from its opposite, the extreme synthesis of the sign. Immune to hyper-realist fashions, a concious connoisseur of the informal, Lucca penetrates a path of «representative subtraction» from which figures (whether anthropomorphic or not) emerge «between presence and absence» on the boundaries of the figurative universe. The threshold, as a liminal condition of transformation, is the place and time in which Lucca's silhouettes are suspended, caught in the act of appearing or disappearing. The linen oil-based painting, applied on the canvas support (in accordance with a procedure directly inspired by traditional pictorial techniques, rather than the many contemporary experimentations) backs up the painter's poetics with extraordinary consistency. The crystallization of the colour at the margins of the field determines a nuance, a fading halo rich in meanings. In the case of the Paesaggi the aura that surrounds the bodies bear witness to the rejection of the contour as a statically descriptive sign, in the Serre the inversion of the figure-background generates unexpected luministic effects, framed in delicate strokes or white pastel. At first glance the Astrazioni seem to betray the expectations of a complete abandonment of the figurative that their title suggests. On the contrary, the outline and the field flank each other in the space of the canvas and describe the melancholy Madonnas with their bowed heads, and other characters belonging to the iconography of cemetery statues. Compared with the human icons of the landscapes, exquisitely two-dimensional in their inconsistency, the sacred figures of the Astrazioni are enriched by chiaroscuro effects and three-dimensionality and emerge from the canvas with power which is at times sculptural. Abstraction, in this case, should not be intended in the figurative sense but with reference to the intangible and spiritual dimension of which the subjects of the paintings are the symbol. Astrazione | 2010 Olio di lino e pastello su tessuto - Linen oil and pastel on fabric cm 182 x 132 In a territory at the limits between figure and form, figurativeness and abstraction, and sign and significance, Lucca paints nostalgia and the fear of loss. Particularly exemplificative of the central position of this theme is, for example, Una sfumatura di intensa dolcezza (A nuance of intense sweetness), the little book he produced in 2008. The paint applied on the first sheet penetrates the paper and loses intensity with every passage: as a result, at the end of the book, little remains of the human figure with its sharp contours apart from an uncertain yellowish patina, as if time had consumed it until it makes it disappear. At the same time, Lucca affirms the resolute desire to be there, to exist: this declares the quiet harmony of his paintings and the tension (implicit but evident) towards the beautification of the boundary between existence and nothingness. The shadows of the Paesaggi remain still, but less dense that the physical reality that projects them. The glaring that brightens the darkness of the Serre make the life contained in them shine; finally, in the Astrazioni, the reiteration of the side-by-side strokes (which, in extremis, tend to blend themselves into fields) lays claim to the analytical potential of the sign that contains and delimits the ungraspable inconsistency of dust. 6 dicembre 2013 - 4 maggio 2014 Museo Gipsoteca Canova di Possagno Le Grazie e Venere danzano davanti a Marte | 1799 Tempera su carta - Tempera on paper cm 25 x 39 Casa di Canova, Possagno - House of Canova, Possagno 26 Via Canova 74 - 31054 Possagno (Treviso) Tel +39 (0) 423544323 http://www.museocanova.it Ritratto di Antonio Canova - Portrait of Antonio Canova Thomas Lawrence | 1815-18 Olio su tela - Oil on canvas cm 90 x 72 Casa Canova, Possagno - House of Canova, Possagno 27 Gipsoteca di Antonio Canova Gipsothèque of Antonio Canova Possagno | 1836 "If Canova had left even a single fingerprint on the marble, we would find it on the restored plaster cast," declares Mario Guderzo, Director of the Antonio Canova Museum and Plaster Cast Collection of Possagno who is a member of the Scientific Committee of the exhibition along with Ugo Soragni, Regional Director for the Office of Cultural Assets, Giuseppe Pavanello, of Trieste University and Director of the Centro Studi Canoviani of Possagno, Marica Mercalli, Superintendent for the Historical, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Assets for the Provinces of Venice, Padua, Belluno and Treviso, Aidan Weston Lewis, of the National Gallery of Scotlamd and Guancarlo Cunial from the Possagno Gipsoteca. The incredible perfection achieved by this technique can also be seen in another Canova plaster cast, the Dancer, also damaged during the war, who has refound her arms and tambourines. THE GRACES OF ANTONIO CANOVA The Three Graces, along with the Venus of Milo and the bust of Nefertiti, is perhaps the most famous sculptural group in the world. It is not very important that not everyone knows that it is the work of Antonio Canova and that the three young beauties are the daughters of Zeus, Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia, and that, companions of Venus respectively symbolized, splendour joy and prosperity. Canova interpreted them in two very similar exemplars. The first, now at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, was commissioned by Josephine de Beauharnais, then Napoleon's wife. The second was ordered by the Duke of Bedford who saw the plaster cast that the sculptor kept in his Roman atelier, begged him to make another marble exemplar. Canova returned the model and after making little changes, accompanied it personally to its new English home, almost as if to postpone the moment of separation. Today this magnificent marble is shared, seven years each, by the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh and by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Exactly two centuries have passed since the start of these events: the original plaster model of the Graces is in fact dated 1813. Canova's three beauties have become universally famous over these two centuries. The 28 sinuosity of the female forms, and the delicacy and softness as well as the refined smoothness of the marble, engender a play of light and shadow that enchant anyone admiring them. Canova left the original plaster cast of the first version of the Graces, the one on which he had worked to create his masterpiece, in his Home-Museum in Possagno. The plaster cast taken from the “English” Graces also came to Possagno as a document to conserve in perennial memory of the art of the great sculptor. Unfortunately, the plaster casts and other works conserved in the Gipsoteca were showered by rubble caused by the Austro-Hungarian bombardments during the First World War when Possagno, at the foot of Monte Grappa, was a battle zone. The harm suffered by the "English" group was particularly serious and the Graces' faces and busts were dramatically damaged. Just after the conflict, Stefano and Siro Serafin, custodians and skilled restorers, repaired much of the damage suffered by the works. However, they did not work on the Bedford Graces which, defaced, were placed in the Possagno town council hall as an eternal reminder of the effects of the war on the country's historical and artistic heritage too. The second group of Graces was restored and is exhibited in the wing of the Gipsoteca that was restored by Carlo Scarpa. One hundred years from the outbreak of the Great War, while Europe is preparing to remember the anniversary, the "British" Graces have also been resurrected with all their parts. Thanks to the collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, proprietor of the precious marble, it has been possible to photograph and scan the work and, thanks to electronics all the missing parts of the Possagno plaster cast have been recomposed. Le Tre Grazie | 1812 Terracotta H 42 cm Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lione It will therefore be possible to admire both restored groups of Graces, the “English” one and the “Russian” one at the show from 7 December to 4 May. Two maquettes, one from the Museum of Lyons and the second belonging to the Museum of Bassano will also be exhibited along with the plaster casts, as well as temperas, drawings and engravings also regarding the subject of the Graces. Also on display will be dramatic images of the Gipsoteca and Canova plaster casts just after the bombardments, obtained from two public archives and which illustrate the desire to reconstruct precise documentation. ITALO BRESSAN Pittura come mondo. The invisible of the visible by M ar ce ll o Palmi n t e ri But it is a work entitled Glenn Gould that suggests this interpretation. It could perhaps be the Rhapsody for clarinet and piano, written in 1910 by Debussy and marvellously interpreted (with James Campbell on clarinet) by the legendary Canadian pianist that attracts us towards listening to it. Italo Bressan’s painting is therefore real and evanescent like water, like fire, like air and like music. Painting that is the “Visible image of the invisible”, to quote a recurring title in his output which reveals, and it is no coincidence, conceptual closeness to that extraordinary evoker of images, Paul Klee, a painter and - though not many know it - an excellent violinist. A painting that is painting because it is itself and only itself and for this reason can be any other thing. Or it can be “world”. Colour without densities and lumps, ethereal and impalpable, offered as pure evocation, underlies a highly personal interpretation of the natural phenomenology concentrated within the perimeter of works large and small that are composed of veilings and transparencies. By means of stains, slipstreams or drippings, they seem to make a Proust-like search for the time of memory, the stratified and repeated time where faint weavings express the desire for the infinite, the immutable time and time that flows; dream and reality that unite and fuse. He belongs to that rare group of artists whose abstraction ability is not a sterile exercise of style or self-gratification but nourishes research into a lyricism which charges itself with tensions, fractures and flare-ups; configurations and compositions held together by a dynamic and secure current which, by revealing the action, establishes the form maturing as a proliferating organic entity. It is no coincidence that in the works of Italo Bressan, whether they are on canvas, paper, glass, panels of other supports combined together, are arranged in diptych or triptych form or in various modular systems, in such a way as to interrupt apparent harmonies or to launch the flow of a brush stroke in one moment towards a new portion of space and then towards a second one overlooking the abyss of the void. In this way, the artist reveals remains of an interrupted story to us which, by offering perceptive ambiguity, create multiple horizons and oblige the gaze to wander over the work. All physicality is therefore cancelled and the support is the cradle - or better still, if we can use a naturalistic term - the bed in which the colour flows like water in a river and, like a river, can change, depending on the flood, the weather or the seasons. And, in effect, the metaphor of water, but also that of air or fire, is one of those that fits well with Italo Bressan’s work which is aimed more at impression rather than description, at sensation rather than at tactile concreteness. The title of a recent work, Glenn Gould (2005, oil 32 ITALO BRESSAN lives and works in Trento and Milan Gotico | 2003 Olio su tavola e colori su vetro - Oil on board and colors on glass cm 200 X 100 on a panel and colours on glass, 120x108 cm) provides us with a further and very plausible key of reading: an exquisitely musical one. And, of course music has the power to evoke without having (and perhaps being able) to describe anything. The romantic and late romantic composers were aware of this while nevertheless giving “sound and colour” to mountains, steppes and rivers in many symphonic poems. These are drawings traced by an iridescent pen which unfold, appearing and disappearing, and which reveal the truth of their metaphysical content in space, a three-dimensional element. The sign is freed from its link with the material, it floats in the aether, it reflects and reverberates. But the truly great capacity of these installations - perennial and transitory at the same time - is the audacious one of redefining space: not with the usual metrics of decimal systems but with that of the abstract sign, bending reality to its setting. Thanks to this theatrical character, Rotelli's oeuvre does not only represent its intrinsic significance but assumes value in its capacity to modify space, an operation that imposes great awareness of place, of its history, and of the infinite possibilities of change that pass through it and of the relationship that they are able to establish with the work. A great cloud- barrier , for instance, may be building above the skyline and hides the sun itself. As in Lacasella’s pictures there is a sudden tinge off ire splashing the topos reaches of this barrier. One is persuaded by the apparent solidity of the clouds that they form high ground- an horizon above the horizon, as in those paintings once more- and that they are foothills to mountains that may at any moment appear, making our Costwold valley into a scooped-out shelter under their bulk. This illusion holds one until the fire of the hidden sun penetrates the vertical cloud-mass and whole ingots now show through -- a Lacasella effect once more! The one irrefutable thing is the cold out of which, eventually, a slender moon gradually appears, a curved blade on the darkness which has replaced sun, mountains, molten fragments. I recall – like one of those panels of a different space and time which Lacasella introduces into his vistas – occasions on which I have flown over this countryside in a plane bound for New York that is imprinting its vapour trail – Lacsella could paint one of these—on the bare sky above the clouds. Down there below I have caught sight of our familiar landscape raising its hill shoulders above the valleys in a soliditywhich the clouds had merely imitated. Roberto Tassi has spoken of Lacasella’s landscapes – airscapes, skyscapes?—as resembling a view from the window of a plane. This, like the view from the window of a moving car, has given us a new access to landscape unkown to our ancestors. But it has also made difficult any final view of what a landscape is, that hope of finality present in the formulae of the eighteenth century picturesque and Romantic art. Right from his youth he savoured the thrill of giving life to matter which in the case of ceramics is an activity that assumes all the value of a skill as old as mankind. The early years of his formation were not only marked by the experience acquired in the family workshop, but also by a trip to Japan that opened his horizons and directed his interest towards stoneware as well as into meticulous research into enamels and oxides. Luca Schiavon arrived at his mastery of the ceramic technique to the point of seeking to arrive at a level of strength and solidity that contrasts with the "fragility" description usually attributed to it. The study and experimentation of firing at high temperatures have allowed him to achieve the greater robustness of the work. This characteristic then seems to reveal itself from the aesthetic point of view as its forms are never delicate or ephemeral. They draw inspiration from the natural world, not so much in an illusionist camouflage of a "copy from nature", but through the artful reproduction of those same wrinkled, grainy, marbled and scratched surfaces of certain tree barks, fabulous calcareous concretions or even ramified contortions generated by microscopic colonies of corals. Schiavon draws suggestions from nature that we can define as "tactile" (of asperities, porosities etc.) providing proof of a personal reinterpretation of the perceptions coming from the outside. This sensitive and vibratile "skin" is created through a preparation of the enamels which, thanks to the complicity of fire, give rise to surprising "imperfections" which turn the defect into a special effect which differs from the specific smoothness and precision of tradition. The body of these subjects often assumes enveloping concave or hollow morphologies that grasp space, enclose it, and delimit it with the creation of different contexts to give life to new places. This organic "modularity" is far removed from a rationality of the geometrical type and instead articulates itself as a natural phenomenon in expansion in which a numerical harmony and of growth rules. What seems to interest the artist most is referring the forms to one another in the plays of emptiness and fullness, so that the former have the same plastic value as the latter: emptiness and fullness are only two substances of different density which move in one another and mutually contaminate themselves. Space therefore, as declared by the German philosopher Heidegger, is something rational and an artist's work does not take substance in a space but is itself the creator of space. Vasi Medusa | 2013 Gres smaltato - Enamelled gres H 70 cm 44 sensations and making them its own. Luca Schiavon affirms that planning a work springs from making it, in direct contact with the material, and it is from here that a subject that can later mature into a thematic research path develops and is articulated. The material, fire and time, dictate their rules to the point that the potter must always allow for the intrusion of "chance" while the latter becomes the variable that must be faced, sometimes submitting to its effects and other times getting carried away by an unexpected result. This creative procedure becomes even more interesting if compared with a society, like ours, dominated by technology where everything is planned, everything is and must be integrated into the "machine" system in which there is no alternative to living like a cog in the production mechanism without rough edges, stoppages of unprofitable irrationality. A possible, or at least desirable alternative then becomes the reassessment of chance as a means of access to the "human context", going against the grain of the pressing demands of an aseptic, efficient "normal" execution of routine. Nel ’97, il Dipartimento di Psicologia Generale dell’Università di Padova pubblica un suo testo nel volume “Tra percezione e Attilio Taverna vive e lavora a Bassano del Grappa (VI) http://attiliotaverna.beepworld.it 24 gennaio - 9 marzo 2014 “ATTILIO TAVERNA – LUCE, FORMA, QUANTI” Padova, Galleria civica Cavour, piazza Cavour http://padovacultura.padovanet.it 47 THE QUANTUM FORM OF LIGHT IN THE PAINTING OF ATTILIO TAVERNA by M ari a L uisa Bi an co t t o An artist who is highly committed at theoretical and pragmatic level, with a solid aesthetic, philosophical and scientific forma- tion and an original formal approach on the concrete plane of pictorial research, Attilio Taverna is an anomalous intellectual figure in the artistic-cultural panorama: an outsider who, despite the now inveterate convictions on the death of art, relaunches the challenge of its future with a proposal that combines painting with the arrival of quantum physics and opens new roads for artistic expression. In his forty years’ activity, he has followed his own path, always in an abstract framework, which, after a constructivist approach, has led him to interrogate himself on the origin of matter, in accordance with the conceptions of modern physics, to arrive at an investigation of the formal nature of light and its possible representation. Light that becomes energy that becomes matter that becomes phenomenal reality. “It is light which, in its infinite eidetic potential, manages to make any conceivable germinal structure of form emerge, just like the very possibility of geometrical thought,” affirms Taverna, interviewed by Silvia Simoncelli, in the catalogue of his one-man show at the Fondazione Benzi Zecchini in Caerano S. Marco Omaggio a Ippaso da Metaponto | 1997 Olio su tela - Oil on canvas cm 200 x 200 48 (Venice) in 2004 “... Light interrogated aesthetically before declining itself as radiance, matter, phenomenology. It then derives that interrogating the formal nature of light is the same as interrogating the formal nature of the real.” Through a reconstruction of the form founded on the vectorial paths of light in space-time, Taverna arrives at the visualization of essential physical phenomena, such as those investigated by quantum mechanics and by chaos theory. The outcomes are large-scale works with an extraordinary visual impact that insist case by case on the breaking of symmetry, on the germination in colourist and luminist terms of simple geometric figures, and on perceptive transparencies and refractions of light; and also on complexity and on chaos, intended as the infinitely mutable creation of forms, on the visualization of algorithms, on aperiodic luminosity ... All of this is always conceived as exploration of the vectorial nature of light at the level of the elementary particles and of the invisible universe. Fundamental for his research after studying Venice’s Accademia di Belle Arti was the encounter at the beginning of the seventies with Dino Formaggio, then Professor of Aesthetics at the University of Padua, who had seen some of his exhibitions and highly appreciated his work. He began a theoretical itinerary with him which would involve him for many years in the Paduan Institute and then that of Reggio Emilia. This was followed by a long stay in Paris and then in the United States. After exhibitions in the various cities of the Veneto, in Italy and Germany, and the publication in 1989 of his theoretical research into form, Taverna began to collaborate with a leading American Corporation engaged in contemporary art in the US market. In 1997 the Department of General Psychology in Padua University published a paper of his in the book, “Tra percezione e arte”. In 1998 Taverna won the competition for the cover Amaterasu’s smile | 1997 Olio su tela - Oil on canvas cm 200 x 200 of the Cambridge University review, “Trends in Neurosciences” (UK). In 2004, he produced the cover for the International New York scientific review, “Chaos and Complexity Letters”, published by the Nova Scientia group, NY, USA. He also designed the cover for the deeds of the international congress of mathematics and geometry, “Fractals 2004”, held in Vancouver, Canada. His theoretical interviews have been published in the official review of aesthetic philosophy of Quebec University and of the Department of Philosophy of the State University of Milan. The exhibition, “Luce, Forma, Quanti”, which the Commune of Padua is dedicating to Attilio Taverna from 24 January to 09 March 2014 in the Civica Galleria Cavour, is a homage to the Bassano master and his work which opens a virtually unexplored front in the field of art and painting, with imponderable developments from an aesthetic standpoint too. Over 40 large-scale works and some very recent drawings offer stimuli for the elaboration of new categories of investigation at a moment in which contemporary art is seeking other directions. Now the innovation is in the fact that the job of photographer has changed dramatically: the job begins when the technical capacity is reached , leaving room for imagination and planning. Today the purpose is to propose a visual language to be capitalized on the near and nearer future. Waiting for innovation is not always an advantage, but instead a real advantage is anticipating and influencing it. ISFAV was born in Padua in 1990 to give the professionals the cultural and technical training that the market demanded in those years. Currently , the belief that photography and the photographic image are a cultural product, and not just a technical result, has strengthened our purposes and it is our starting point. We believe in the power of creativity and ideas (the imagination therefore) , quality and results that come from students assisted by our teachers in the realization of their creations. BECOME PHOTOGRAPHERS With the teaching methodology of ISFAV you can explore the technical and linguistic possibilities of the photographic instrument: the aim is to form a professional able to understand and work in a complex communication process. In our school there are not teachers by profession, but professionals who teach. The photographic technique is explained starting Reportage | 2011 Sasa Zic O.Toscani from the basic concepts that are acquirable in the first teaching period, continuing with more advanced and complex techniques in the field of shooting and post production. In Italy there are not many photography schools but a lot of fans of the topic and, most importantly , many companies seeking professionals. Over the years this phenomenon has meant that different business realities have recognized in our structure a reference point for research assistants, collaborators and images creators. As shown by the data of recent years, at the end of the course many students becomes successful professionals and image makers. Some of them have also received prestigious awards and mentions worldwide. The first step begins inside our classrooms , where students are helped to grow their own vision of the world and images through a path that ends with the creation of a portfolio , an essential tool to search for a job. It is through this collection of skills and images that our students demonstrate their ability to fit into the professional world as: Still Life Photographer, Photoreporter , Photographer of Entertainment, Food Photographer , Photographer in Architecture , Landscape, Cultural Heritages, Artistic Photography , Fashion Photographer. ISFAV is accredited by the Veneto Region and the certificate achieved is valid in Italy and in the European Community. At the end of the two academic years for which an high school graduation is required, the diploma is achieved with an examination judged by a regional commission. Creativity and innovation are interconnected , and for this reason that “creative talents “have always been the bearers of change and their abilities activate the flow of resources useful to reinforce the economic and cultural development of a country. Talent is a capital both for business and for society , and facilitating this union is our job. The Guest Quarters are distinguished by a large central hall richly decorated in 1652 by the Brescia artist, Domenico De Bruni, with a skilful play of perspectives and by the Venetian, Pietro Liberi, who was commissioned to depict the allegorical scenes on the walls and the triumph of the virtues of the noble Venetian family on the ceiling. The structure is now used to host prestigious events. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is hosting the Parisian avant-gardes until 06 January 2014: Signac, Bonnard, Redon and their contemporaries in a show that, with around one hundred works including paintings, drawings, prints and works on paper, intends to analyze the Parisian art scene, focussing on the main French avant-gardes at the end of the nineteenth century, and particularly on the neo-expressionists, Nabis and symbolists and their protagonists. Also exhibited at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni alongside the great masterpieces collected by the benefactor, Peggy Guggenheim, and the Futurist works of the Gianni Mattioli Collection, is the Hannelore B. and Rudolph B. Schulhof Collection, a precious acquisition of the Venetian museum has enriched it with eighty new postwar Italian, European and American artworks since last October. This is an extraordinary selection of greater art masters of the twentieth century, with names ranging from Alberto Burri to Alexander Calder, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Willem de Kooning, Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Mark Rothko, Claes Oldenburg, Frank Stella, Antoni Tàpies, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Sol Lewitt, Anish Kapoor, and many others. From May 29th 2013 to February 14th 2014, La Galleria of Dorothea van der Koelen in Venice presents the exhibition “In the Mirror of Reality”, a group show of contemporary art which focuses on the idea of Reality as interpretation of perception in visual objects. 10 artists take part in this exhibition from 7 different countries and are internationally recognized: Lore Bert, Daniel Buren, Nigel Hall, Mohammed Kazem, Patrick Mimran, François Morellet, Arne Quinze and Bernar Venet. Most of the works have been created specially on the occasion of the show and use different kinds of materials, from paper to glass, wood, mirror, metal or even plexiglass. Also in mirror optic are the 5 Platonic Solids of Lore Bert in her show “Art & Knowledge” in the Marciana National Library at St Mark’s Square, a Collateral Event of the 55. Art Biennale which has received in the first 3 months more than 57.000 visitors. Curtis Wehrfritz - Lost Canoe, Point Flare | 2012 Collodio, Cm 35x28, Pezzo unico PH Neutro Fotografia Fine-Art is pleased to announce the acquisition of a new contemporary photography proposal: Curtis Wehrfritz. The Canadian artist, an established director and director of photography now dedicates himself to visual art, installation and theatrical performances. The documentation of the last of these specifically led to Fluidrive, surreal moments that the artist fixed by means of the daguerreotype, an instrument that is not a simple recovery of the photographic past, but a means for telling stories. Thanks to its essence as a reliquary behind which the images fluctuate as if they were alive, a mirror in which observers see the reflection of their own faces, it calls on them to enrich the work with meaning with their own experience and memory. Alongside this series is Lost Canoe, collodion photographs the intention of which is once again not to rediscover a technical memory, but rather to recount the non-repeatability of a moment through an art which lives on such non-repeatability, with a manner that is different every time and in which light touches the moist surface of the photographic plate. In this way Wehrfritz's work becomes "more than just a window on an unique and unrepeatable moment but a physical object that this moment absorbs” (Curtis Wehrfritz). Over 180 images collected in ten sections – including one dedicated to the city of Verona – trace the fundamental moments in the activities of an absolute star of Italian photo-journalism who was skilled in rendering the world's complexity readable. Berengo Gardin recounts the political life, the social changes and the events that marked Italy's history, as well as moments from everyday life in the streets, random meetings with people, spontaneous gestures. His images narrate reality with rigour and sensitivity, at all times setting man and his dignity at the centre of attention and spurring observers to ask questions about the world surrounding them. Alberto Lanzaretti (POST) FUTURIST HOUSE dal 14 gennaio 2013 a 2014 The Isotta Fraschini, `a legendary car on which the sun never sets, has accompanied Maharajahs, heads of state and oil barons on their luxury travels. Hollywood celebrated it in the film 'Sunset Boulevard', and even today it is looked on as an authentic icon of “Made in Italy". Ostentatious and monumental, it cost more or less 150,000 lire in 1929 and was designed to offer excellent performance but, above all, to guarantee unequalled comfort for its passengers. The Type 8 exemplar that can be admired at the Museo Nicolis in Villafranca was only produced as a bare chassis with engine and then custom-finished by skilful artisan coach-builders, such as the renowned Ercole Castagna in Milan. Customers had no regard for the cost and the coach-builders made their skill and creativity available to provide every car with accessories and details finished with maniacal care: exclusive fabrics for covering the seats, silver and briar finishes, plate glass to separate the driver from the passengers, a dressing case with a make-up corner and a male grooming set with moustache curler. A visit to the Museo Nicolis in Villafranca is a must for car lovers; there are hundreds of them, from the origins to the present day and every last one of them has a story to tell. In avant-garde art, artists such as Fortunato Depero from Trento lived their experience of colour during the critical years of political revolutions when there was also a growing demand for advertising as a result of Italy’s industrial transformation. If colours provided the go-between with the public of the founding symbols of national modernity such as Rinascente and Fiat, they were also associated with the war as signs of dynamism and progress rather than of death and tragedy. Alberto Lanzaretti uses the same elements of multicolour geometry and and starts off again from collage, with “tapis” of coloured wood joined together to form stereometries that represent constructions and solids with defined contours. Lanzaretti's fast and immediate communication reaches everyone as in a return to the coloured geometry of children's building blocks, as in the Carosello but even as a reference to the graphics and advertising photography of the sixties, characterized by optical effects and elementary colours. The structure of atoms is constructed in Lanzaretti and sometimes represented with such essential geometries as to recall the models of science lessons in primary schools. The observer is impulsively invited to to touch these surfaces with their hands as the logical consequence of a volumetric illusion composed of pieces that are sharply defined and placed side by side. If the “rule of the game is to make do with whatever is at hand”, as French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss wrote, then Metamorfosi Gallery fully fulfils the principle: a “gallery” without an head office, metamorphic by nature, subject to new and continuous contaminations , equipped with professionalism and willing to show young talent submerged in the field of contemporary arts. As a cultural association Metamorfosi Gallery was born in 2011 at first only on the web. Later on it became a real platform of art and a point of attraction for young artists beyond the official circuits and insiders. A company active in the Veneto region, but not exclusively, it is committed to engage people who expressing contemporary and are the same time apparently unrelated to their own art forms. Metamorfosi Gallery in his transformation is dedicated to visual art, but also to performance, dance and music. In the last few years Metamorfosi Gallery opened exhibitions like Nocturna Tango and Ghisa Art Fusion festivals; and at international level K/R/S (2012), Io sono diverso (2013) and Micrometamorfosi (2013). A convergence of different backgrounds and people that are potentially new magmatic artistic events. The exhibition year of the Museo Casa Giorgione closes with a show dedicated Castelfranco painter, Lorenzo Viola, a tribute to his 60-year career. The exhibition, which will close on 12 January 2014, covers the original artistic experimentations and countless thematic declensions of one of the subjects dearest to the Master: the flower. The show will then make way for one that is intended to pay homage to another great artist who left his mark on the town's history: Luigi Pastrello known to everyone as Bepe. An extraordinary puppeteer and a self-taught artisan, he became a fully fleshed artist thanks to his manual skills and entrepreneurial spirit: during his life, in fact, he produced paintings, and wrote scripts and poetry, with a naive spirit that distinguished him during the entire span of his career. The show will open on 24 January 2014 when it will be possible to admire his prodigious puppets, the tools of his trade housed in his precious cases, historical photographs and old videos. The show will close on 20 March 2014. Solo per citare alcuni autori: Giorgio De Chirico, Renato Guttuso, Mario Schifano, Fortunato Depero, Vanni Viviani, Luca Alinari, e poi ancora, Peter Fellin, Karl Plattner, Willy Valier, Hermann Nitsch, Adolf Vallazza, Sergio De Carli, Giuseppe Zoppi e tanti altri. Collection-A little/great art collection The 2014 exhibition of Bressanone's Galleria Civica will be inaugurated in January next with an art review entitled "Collection", or "a little/ great collection"; a collection of visual art with a broad "inventory" of works collected over about 30 years. "Small" because the collection certainly cannot be compared to those that we are often used to seeing in the exhibition spaces of major institutions but "great" for the passion and dedication of an artist/collector who over the years was able to count above all on friendship and on the generosity of colleagues, artists, gallerists and others whom he succeeded in cultivating in the name of a love for art. The artists represented include: Giorgio De Chirico, Renato Guttuso, Mario Schifano, Fortunato Depero, Vanni Viviani and Luca Alinari, not to mention Peter Fellin, Karl Plattner, Willy Valier, Hermann Nitsch, Adolf Vallazza, Sergio De Carli, Giuseppe Zoppi and many others. Unquestionably an unmissable date for eager experts and enthusiasts who for the whole month will be able to visit the show in the "town living room" - the correct definition for a space that has become a meeting point for/of an entire area today: Galleria Civica di Bressanone. Over one hundred prints from the Moscow's renowned Puskin Museum and from the “Le vie delle stampe” Museum of Pieve Tesino will be the stars at Trento's Casello del Buonconsiglio from 20 January 2013 to 04 May 2014 in the exhibition "20th century Moscow and St. Petersburg in the lithographs of the Daziaro company". The Daziaro brothers, natives of Tesino, played a leading role in pre-revolutionary Russia and managed to become a point of reference for prints market in the Russian Empire with three shops in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Novgorod. Their shops became so famous that were mentioned by Russian authors such as Lev Tolstoy, Vladimir Nabokov and Théophile Gautier. In addition to this the Daziaro brothers (though Austro-Hungarian citizens) were the founders of three friendly societies in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Odessa for the benefit of needy Italian citizens. The 1917 revolution killed this brilliant experience of Italo-Austrian enterprise in Russia. But the fortune of the Daziario brothers was not unique. The exhibition is being staged thanks to the collaboration between the Centro Tesino di Cultura, The Puskin Museum in Moscow and Trento's Castello del Buonconsiglio. Eppur stanno e tendono a qualcosa. Immagini totemiche e in dissolvenza. Trento's museum pole dedicated to contemporary art has been further enlarged with the annexing of Trento's Galleria Civica to Mart, the historic gallery resumes its activities becoming for all intents and purposes the third seat of Mart, in dialoguie with the Museum and with the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero in Rovereto. As announced in recent months, the Civica's project follows the ambition to create a constructive dialogue with its surroundings, with the inhabitants and with visitor's to the town, and confirms the link with the Province and with the institutions, as well as its international and cosmopolitan vocation. The reopening of the spaces in some way represents the recovery of that ideal of experimentation in the way art is conceived and interpreted which has always characterized the activities of the Galleria Civica since its very foundation. The exhibition activities will develop on a seasonal basis and with previously identified specific themes ranging from projects relating to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries right up to contemporary themes with investigations into the languages of art and architecture. In particular, the programme intends to develop the work of young professionals in the art field; its commitment in this sense materialized right from the beginning as one of the most urgent aspects of the direction the new management intends to follow. The Director of the Galleria Civica is Cristiana Collu while Margherita de Pilati is the operational head. After starting off an as engraver and painter and winning prizes and awards at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice, Franco Costalonga (Venice, 1933) broadened his interests in the visual research framework and became one of the most original artists in the international kinetic panorama in the brief timespan of the sixties and seventies. An attentive observer of perception problems, Costalonga applied himself faithfully and with constancy to his artistic work, experimenting the use of innovative and continually changing materials. As regards the apparent mutability of form, his investigations were fully recognized by critics, the market and the most attentive and historically influential collectors such as Peggy Guggenheim who purchased one of the first Plexiglas spheres for her permanent collections as long ago as 1969. Invited to the XXV and XLII Venice Biennali, he recently took part in the must important exhibitions of kineticism including the one in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg in 2006 and at the GNAM in Rome in 2012. In 2012 he also participated with one of his works in the exhibition “Arte Europea 1949/ 1970”, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice. Within the works of Maïmouna Patrizia Guerresi the body portrayed by photography and sculpture is always defined and blocked out by the dress. A prosthetic Mantle or full-scale Veil, that recurs and marks out the figures, clashing with the elevation of striking minaret hats and other corporeal fittings. The dress englobes, it is body itself, but hollowed from its inside and, by this anomaly in perspective, place of frank ambiguity of the vision. These fascinating picked sceneries of the bodies appear to be magnetized by silence and lull before word and movement. Yet, they are to and aim at something. A still charge drives them and welds their outline and hollows to the ground. It deals with the technique of composition of the scenic situation, finely and manually arranged by the artist, towards a certain ludic unreality of the space: organic and nearly rocky setting, planking dress that as a basement carries the picture to finally hand it over to the void, typical faint of anyone who leans out of a rise and for a moment is held by that flooring gravity of the senses. Fade-in totemic pictures. This lightness that moves everything outside itself in order to receive, acquires unfinished-by enchantments. Cuore di mamma di Ugo De Angelis After the important exhibitions in Paris, Léon and Madrid, the artist, Vinicio Momoli, is working on a one-man show that will be staged next spring in Castelfranco Veneto, in the framework of the “Arte in Torre” project organized by the town council. The works will be displayed in the Torre dell’Orologio and in other sites in the old town centre. In July the show will continue in the Spineto Abbey, Sarteano (Siena). His current artistic research is carried out in the framework of “Nexiture”, a neologism created by the artist in 2002, composed of the words Nexus and Texture. Nexiture indicates a composite graphic-artistic treatment in which the visual and conceptual signs are arranged in such a way as to form a surface in a balanced alternation of fullness and emptiness, drawing and background, concave and convex, and profound and flat. Just like a “couturier”, Vinicio Momoli selects, cuts and distributes the materials, filling the gaps and hollowing them out so as to give them more meaning. Just as in a collage, stone, rubber, glass and iron develop the minimalist thought of the artist with the reduction of the material to the essential. A mother's heart It was in October 2012 that news came that seven precious paintings had been stolen from the Kunsthal in Rotterdam which was hosting an exhibition of the Avant-Gardes with important works by Van Gogh, Dalì, Duchamp etc.. At the beginning of July 2013, the trail had led the police to the by Ugo De Angelis thief, Radu Dogaru, who was being investigated along with two other Romanians. But there was no happy ending with the recovery and return of the works: In an attempt to get rid of the evidence when the Bucharest police arrived to arrest her son, Radu's mother, Olga Dogaru, lit the wood-burning stove and burnt the stolen canvasses including, perhaps, Harlequin head (1971) by Picasso, Wowan reading (1919) by Matisse, Waterloo Bridge (1901) by Monet and Woman with closed eyes (2002) by Lucien Freud. Of inestimable value but practically unsellable, the paintings therefore ended up in the kitchen oven after being hidden for a few months in an abandoned farmhouse and then buried in a cemetery in the village of Caracliu. All that the police found when they arrived were ashes with small fragments of wood, the remains of paint, canvas and copper and steel nails. These remains were dated as products of the nineteenth century and are now being examined by the NatioVinicio Momoli nal History Museum of Romania in order to see if they really belong to the precious Vive e lavora a Castelfranco Veneto (TV) e Parigi haul which the world has been deprived of forever. www.viniciomomoli.com A case of a misunderstood sense of protection by a mother that transformed a senseless theft into a "crime against humanity". 60 Liceo Artistico G. L’enorme patrimonio che mette l’Italia tra le eccellenze mondiali deve poter contare su un competente turnover generazionale che sappia prendersene cura per sé e per altri nel tempo. The enormous legacy that places Italy among the world's excellences must be able to count on a competent generational turnover that is able to take care of it for themselves and for others over time. "Levi's 501s" jeans that succeeded in becoming a myth like few others, making a place for itself in society and the history of fashion, were patented on 20 May 140 years ago. The trousers with five pockets were designed by Levi Strauss and the tailor Jacob Davis in denim fabric which, because of its characteristics and its ability to change over time, is defined as a "living cloth". They were and still are jeans that are capable of exciting and that have become a symbol in many countries and for many generations. They became famous in the fifties thanks to American film stars and in the collective imagination incarnate the rebellion of youth during those years. In the eighties they entered the great fashion houses and acquired original new features. In order to celebrate and remember this anniversary, the students of the third class of the Fashion Design specialism were involved in an exercise where jeans provide the support on which to develop material and chromatic specialization in complete freedom. The working group consisting of twenty students re-elaborated the garment giving body to the volumes and to three-dimensional elements of the textile surface in which unravelling, painting, and scratching become virtuosity. The results were exciting because of their variety and the solutions adopted, and once again confirm how this garment is transversal and belongs to the new generations just as it did to previous ones and lends itself to be interpreted and manipulated with results that are always surprising. Elisa Baldo A project that Gorizia's "Max Fabiani Liceo Artistico has been working on with a large group of students is coming to an end after two years' works. The students of the fifth section, Surveying and Cataloguing, under the direction of Prof. Federica Valvassori, studied and completed graphic projects for the friezes that decorate the villas in the Monfalcome neighbourhood of Panzano. This project is part of a proposal that the Monfalcone culture consortium made to the school two years ago and is part of the interventions to recover the neighbourhoods in question. These are being coordinated by Monfalcone town council as well as by the Giovanni Cividini photography fund which belongs to the Consortium itself, a fund that documents the realization and urban development of the Panzano workers' quarter at the beginning of the nineteen-twenties. This is an interesting project that once again sees the school involved with outside associations with a view to promoting its activities, but especially the work of the young people studying in it. In order to innovate and enrich its formative offering, the Institute has activated countless projects and takes part in various CONTESTS, all featuring the same common denominator: growth. Growth that involves both the students (path towards progressive maturity) and the school (path towards progressive improvement) in a sort of virtuous circle developed along three axes. GROWING THROUGH OUR SURROUNDINGS. The school and the cultural and economic context collaborate in the development of the attitudes of the students who are experiencing increasingly wide-ranging and changeable scenarios. GROWING BY COMMITTING AND HELPING OURSELVES AND LIVING SCHOOL LIFE POSITIVELY. The school promotes scholastic wellbeing, favours formative success, is attentive to the students' creativity, to their pleasure in being together, and to the satisfaction of a finished product. GROWING AND IMPROVING. The school feels the need to open itself to teaching innovation by integrating the concept of the closed classroom with open workshops and classes and with the consolidation of modular teaching and multimedia by launching self-assessment procedures. A photographic experimentation project that involved participation in countless workshops has been in place for three years. A photographic literacy course, OFF CAMERA, was established starting from an analysis of the works of Nino Migliori, and photographs were created during it without using cameras but by applying different techniques including oxidation, lucigrams and photograms. Experience was acquired in the field using POLAROID film and making reference to Maurizio Galimberti: the result was rich documentation of both the Veneto mountain and lagoon landscapes. The experimentation continued with a workshop in which STENOPEIC HOLES were used to describe Cortina d'Ampezzo and capture its spirit of winter. The students had direct contact with the world of experimental photography and along this path the personal gesture, fantasy and unchained imagination provided the common denominator under the banner of creativity. The workshop were conducted by the photographer, Annamaria Castellan, Associazione Acquamarina – Trieste. The path followed in Fanoli encourages students to acquire the specific methods of research, mastery of the operational project processes, the use of artistic languages and the various expressive techniques, also on the basis of the necessary cross-pollination between traditional disciplinary specifications, including new technologies. Cittadella art high school provides students of all the specializations with the tools required for getting to know our artistic heritage in its historical and cultural context and fully grasping its presence and value in contemporary society. At Fanoli, students are guided in studying and developing knowledge and ability and maturing the skills necessary for expressing their own creativity and design capabilities in the framework of the arts. The “PIETRO SELVATICO” art high school has always had contacts with the world of art, design and work, and has inserted experiences from them into its teaching. Among these we would like to highlight the school's collaborations with Fòrema, a training body of Padua Confindustria Padova, through the decorative arrangement of a multimedia workshop at Fòrema's experiential training centre, “Il Cubo Rosso”.The project involved several classes from the painting, sculpture, weaving and architecture specialisms which, after examining the theme "Europe: multiculturalism and internationalization", translated the various proposals of ideas, in a constant synergy between design disciplines and workshops, onto wooden panels employing various techniques and the use of the materials associated with the workshops in the sections involved. The teaching experience based on the comparison between the school and the world of work was highly motivating for students who knew that at the end of the course their output would go beyond the school walls and enter the collective spaces of public utility. THIS IS VITTORIO VENETO FILM FESTIVAL Un Festival Internazionale di Cinema per ragazzi. Diverso e particolare. Martina DE Bortoli, 5^ A (Pubblicato su “La virgola, voci Libere dal Munari, maggio 2013) Taking a step back when you observe a work of art is almost an instinctive, natural movement. It is necessary to obtain an overall view in order to understand. And the distance that we put between ourselves and the work becomes a space that permits a relationship. There are different ways of creating this distance. For these works, which regard living space and which are part of the show, “La Giusta Distanza” ("The Right Distance") staged last June in the historical seat of the Cassa di Risparmio di Padova, we started off by taking photographs, which is already a first step backwards compared with reality, photographs which were then elaborated to highlight colours or contrasts, emphasize atmospheres or underline peculiarities. The photograph retouched in this way was then reproduced in a large format using acrylic colours, and this last step allowed us to create the right distance in order to create the space in which it is possible to establish the necessary relationship for reading the real datum. When we observe these works we can grasp the brush stroke, the pictorial gesture, the material of the colour, we can intuit the personality or the character of those who painted them. Seen from a few metres away, the paintwork disappears and the image appears extremely realist to us and the technique gives way to a vision of the reality of the image. I am nineteen years old and have been a member of the organizational staff of the Vittorio Veneto Film Festival for about two years. My experience began during the II edition of the event, when I was selected to participate in a workshop of cinema acting conducted by the actor Barbara Enrichi, an experience that then took me to the 68th Venice Film Festival. I have never been a person with lots of initiative and I never got involved in alternative activities to the school until that moment when I came into contact with this environment which immediately excited me and led to my engagement. Today our group consists of 20 young people who discuss and exchange ideas on the structure of the next edition. This Festival is unique in terms of the commitment it imposes on us young people who are involved, and on the thousand youths in the jury from various schools in Italy and Europe when expressing their preferences on the competing films (dubbed directly in the cinema). A Festival produced by young people for young people in a spiral of satisfactions and emotions that spurs us to do more and more. The project, which is intended to promote the dialogue between different cultures and religions, was won by the student, Beatrice Bandiera from class 3F, coordinated by Prof. Ferrante, with the first prize from the President of the Republic with a work entitled "The face of the world". Another two students in the same class were singled out and received prizes in the same competition: Elisa Florian and Francesca Barattin. The delicate transition stage between the Sections of the Istituto d'Arte and the Design specialism of the new Liceo was comforted by two important recognitions. The necklace design by the jewellery student G. Bortolan won 1st prize while two other were singled out for special mention in the design competition “Doniamo un’idea-Autonomia e imprenditorialità per le donne del Ruanda”, organized by the Soroptimist International Association of Italy and aimed at the art schools in the Triveneto area (300 projects were examined by the international jury). The candidates were required to measure themselves against African crafts: typical materials and techniques of Rwanda taken as the starting point for creating jewels or accessories that could be made using the ancient tradition of weaving vegetable fibres. After a conference held in our own institute by the designer, Benno Simma and the jeweller, Konrad Laimer, the latter judged the school to be worthy of inclusion in the Claudia Augusta project, a cultural exchange between Italy and Russia. Several students, guided by the lecturer, B. Paganin, were guests of the Art School at Kaliningrad, from 9 to 21 September 2013, to experience the working of amber. The visit, which included an alternation of theoretical lessons, workshop activities and visits to local museums, was supervised by the Director of the Amber Museum of Kaliningrad. In the 2012 academic year, thanks to an agreement entered into by the School Director, Dr. Annavaleria Guazzieri, with the Istituto Confucio at the Ca' Foscari University in Venice, a "Confucio" class – a course of linguistic and cultural education – was activated. The enrolled students and participants were provided with a basic knowledge of Chinese that allowed them to obtain all of four bursaries to attend an in-depth course at the Capital Normal University of Beijing. The Liceo was also the supporter for the second show of independent Chinese artists at the 55th Art Biennale. The committee for the event was the artist and Liceo lecturer, Resi Girardella, who conceived the flash-mob performance, "The Dragon comes in peace", for the inauguration of the show. Amost 150 students from the Liceo, the Accademia di Belle Arti and Ca' Foscari University, in traditional Chinese costumes, occupied St. Mark's Square and all together formed the red logo of the show, a Chinese character. The Liceo intends to continue with these interesting collaborations with the world of Art and Chinese Culture, both through collaboration with the Institute Confucio and the language and culture courses, and directly with Chinese artists. "YOUNG PEOPLE REMEMBER OTHER YOUNG MARTYRS" Knowing your own land and treasuring its history in places of memory: this is the path followed by students in the classes 5D and 4C of the “G. DE FABRIS” art high school for imagining, planning and creating the works that sprung from the “VIALE DEI MARTIRI” project. Followed by ANPI, by the Associazione 26 Settembre and by the AVL, they first of all learnt during guided visits what happened in September 1944 with the Grappa roundup and the barbarous hanging of 31 young men by the Nazi-Fascists. This historical information was used by the students to design new supports for the 31 crosses located in the Bassano del Grappa and Cassola area. The activities were carried out during the curriculum hours of Theory and Method of Visual Communication and Design with the assistance of Prof. Ezio Lunardon and Prof. Patrizia Brusaferro. The work consisted of the elaboration of the metal supports which highlight the crosses with the names of the martyrs. The show, staged in the Torre di Porta delle Grazie, encourages a harmonious dialogue between the graphic works proposed by the students and one of the historic sites in Bassano's "memory". The "Art encounters the culture of Amarone" project was conceived and developed in the framework of the figurative arts course in Verona's Liceo Artistic. Wine has often been a source of inspiration for artists but perhaps no one had previously dared to dip their brush into Amarone. The transformation into art of what is in many ways one of the best works from our area was what the young people in the city's Liceo Artistic did. 30 works of sculpture and watercolours sprang from the project in collaboration with the Association of the families of Amarone d'Arte, which involved over 160 students in interpreting Amarone in two years. And so during the hours of lessons Amarone became a source of inspiration for pictorial works, sculptures, videos and marketing design projects, a fungibility of the top Valpolicella wine that reflects what has been demonstrated in the school/work/business relationship. The works succeeded in weaving the flavour of art into that of the symbol product of Valpolicella. A successful cross-fertilization that was crowned by a fine exhibition in May in the rooms of the Palazzo della Ragione. Not everyone knows that there is a piece of Venice in Valdagno thanks to the "Umberto Boccioni" Liceo Artistico. The institute was in fact founded in 1970 as a detached section of Venice's own art high school. The intention was to meet a precise cultural demand from the area in which the Premio Marzotto (awarded to artists such as Burri, Guttuso and Fontana) represented the most authoritative international showcase. These noble origins have not been forgotten: each year the "Boccioni" opens the doors to the public with a series of initiatives including conferences that have hosted such personalities as Giulio Carlo Argan, Bruno Munari, Lea Vergine and Aldo Cibic, just to mention a few names from a truly prestigious list, and with exhibitions showcasing the works of students. The catchment area of Valdagno's art school is also expanding as far as its direct users are concerned: it is in fact now possible to attend an evening course from Monday to Friday, something rare of its kind, for those who wish to complete or integrate their formation and who realize that artistic studies still provide a privileged means for interpreting the complex reality that surrounds us.
