IN BLOOM, the book, the exhibition: a photo project by Eleonora Calvelli Rainbow Families: the project The book: In Bloom After living together for fifteen years, Paolo and Moreno got married in Montreal in 2008. They now have two twins, thanks to a surrogacy in Canada. Ilaria and Antonella, instead, have been living together for twelve years; in 2005 they became mothers through artificial insemination in Spain and in 2010 they got married in Barcelona with a civil ceremony. Chiara and Roberta got married in Barcelona, in 2010, after living together for twelve years; they have two twin girls, Emma and Giada, conceived in a clinic in the Spanish city. Paolo and Moreno, Ilaria and Antonella, Chiara and Roberta, but also Marco and Giampietro, Giuseppina and Raphaelle, Catia and Silvia, Laura and Marilena, are just some of the same-sex couples who live in Italy. They all represent the cross-section of a fast transformation which is seeing, besides the traditional model (mother, father, son), the rise of a new paradigm, with families consisting of a single parent (single, separated and divorced couples), homosexual parents, unmarried couples, extended family units. In Bloom is a vibrant and joyful book that does not miss any of the important issues underlined by the photographs of Eleonora Calvelli. In Bloom recounts the daily life of twelve families, and their efforts towards the recognition of their civil rights in Italy. The stories of these couples tell us about assited fertilization techiques: artificial insemination, egg donation and surrogacy. But, above all, this book is about the way love has shaped their families. Started in 2008 and completed in 2012, the Rainbow Families project has been carried out also in connection with Famiglie Arcobaleno association, with the Center of homosexual culture Mario Mieli in Rome and with the Milk Center in Verona. The project, which has involved twelve families throughout Italy, three couples of men, eight couples of women, a single mother, features a long and complex narrative path that has often crossed italian borders. In Spain Eleonora Calvelli documented the civil marriages of four couples, whilst in Denmark she followed the attempt to conceive a baby carried out by a couple of young women in a clinic for artificial insemination. The first core of the work has been presented in 2009 during the Genoa Gay Pride; in 2010 in Naples during the Naples Pride at the Sala Gemito and in the Autumn of the same year in Rome at the photographic festival Fotoleggendo. Rainbow Families in 2010 has received two honorable mentions: one in the Lucca Digital Photo Festival and another in the International Photography Award, in the section People: Family Pro.
