MAURIZIO GIAMMARCO (Pavia, 1952) A central figure on the italian
MAURIZIO GIAMMARCO (Pavia, 1952) A central figure on the italian jazz scene since early '70's (as attested by his inclusion in the prestigious Biographical Encyclopedia Of Jazz, edited by Leonard Feather & Ira Gitler), Maurizio Giammarco has made his name as a saxophonist, composer and leader of historic groups (such as Lingomania, regarded as the most representative group of the '80's). More recently, he has been the director of the Parco Della Musica Jazz Orchestra (PMJO) resident big band at the Rome Auditorium, a nomination that has enabled Giammarco to focus with growing interest on large ensembles, as also seen by his two recent works with the sicilian big band Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo (Cieli di Sicilia, The Bach Open Project: Vie di Fuga). Starting from a profound understanding of historic jazz, Maurizio has always drawn on the most various musical circles, arriving at a personal synthesis be it on a soloist level as well as compositional. He has played with many renowned jazz artists (Chet Baker, Lester Bowie, Dave Liebman, Phil Markowitz, Miroslav Vitous, Peter Erskine and many others) and with almost all of the most important italian musicians. At the moment Maurizio regular groups include Tricycles, a crossover trio with electric bassist Dario Deidda and drummer John Arnold, and the more acoustic Jazz Four. His new quartet project Rundeep with Vic Juris, Jay Anderson and Adam Nussbaum is going to be released on January 2013. Active also in teaching, in the recording and concert fields, he has distinguished himself as a freelancer on recordings and during tours of pop music and has composed and arranged music for theatre, dance, movies, cd roms, as well symphonic and string orchestras. Author of a monograph on Sonny Rollins (1996), he was also the director of the Termoli Jazz Podium festival (2000-‐6). SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY As a LEADER: Lights & Shades (M.G. "Rundeep", feat.
