europeo, Marco Buticchi, ma, da contemporaneo intelligente, ha saputo imparare dagli statunitensi anche la precisione,
l’attenzione agli eventi storici realmente
accaduti. E tuttavia nel suo ultimo romanzo, Il respiro del deserto (Longanesi, 618
pp., 19,60 euro), il più maturo e completo,
audace e evocativo, troviamo donne molto sognate e tenute per troppo poco tempo. E sentiamo eco di Robinson con il suo
Venerdì, trasformato più avanti in Sandokan con il suo Yanez.
“Il mio preferito era Tremal Naik, il cacciatore di serpenti”, confida Buticchi, nato alla Spezia nel ’57. “Ma è vero, ce li abbiamo
nel codice genetico quegli scrittori. Ci
hanno fatto sognare mondi lontani, che
sembravano irraggiungibili”. Non per lui,
avventuroso scrittore d’avventura. Il suo
romanzo ha già venduto così tanto, ha
conquistato le vette delle classifiche così
in fretta, che sembra inutile parlarne, ma
parlare di libri non è mai inutile. La trama

Stevenson and other classic adventure
novelists from Europe, but Marco
Buticchi, being a smart contemporary author,
was also able to learn from American writers
about the precision and the accuracy
required for describing real historical events.
Nevertheless, in his latest novel, Il respiro del
deserto – (Desert breath) (Longanesi 618
pages, Euro 19.60), undoubtedly his most
mature, complete, audacious and evocative
work, he uses female characters that are
strongly dreamed of but kept for too little
time. And this bears a strong resemblance
with the character of Robinson Crusoe with
his Friday, turned later on into Sandokan with
his Yanez.
“My favourite one was Tremal Naik, the
snakes hunter”, says Buticchi, born in La
Spezia in 1957. “But it’s true, those writers
are embedded into our genetic code. They
made us dream about distant places which
seemed so unreachable”. Not for him,
audacious writer of adventure stories. His
book has already sold so much, reached the
top of the charts so quickly that it seems
pointless to talk about it, but really it is never

Nel 1991 pubblica a proprie spese (e vende in mille copie in pochi
giorni) Il cuore del Poeta, romanzo distribuito da lui stesso e dalla
moglie nelle librerie della provincia della Spezia. Nel ’92 fa uscire
L’ordine irreversibile. Nel ‘97 esce
il primo romanzo nella collana I
Maestri dell’Avventura di Longanesi, il titolo è Le Pietre della Luna, un successo: 150.000 copie
vendute in Italia e la pubblicazione in Germania e Spagna. Al
1998 risale Menorah, che rimane
per mesi nelle vette delle classifiche e consacra Buticchi come
l’unico italiano capace di arginare lo strapotere dei romanzieri anglosassoni. Nel giugno del 2000
esce Profezia che in due mesi
esaurisce tre ristampe, poi arriveranno La nave d’oro, L’anello del
re e l’ultimo Il respiro del deserto.

Spezia. In 1992 he publishes, once
again at his own expense, L’ordine
irreversibile, in 1997 was published
the first novel from the collection
“I Maestri dell’Avventura” di
Longanesi, titles Le Pietre della
Luna. It was a great success with

translation in German and
Spanish. In 1998 Menorah stays at
the top of the charts for several
months consecrating Buticchi as

Truman, abbandonato nel porto della Spezia. Dopo la folgorazione, la fantasia di
Buticchi ha cominciato a correre e la memoria della Casa bianca galleggiante si è
mescolata con l’epopea dei clipper in
guerra contro le navi a vapore, con la storia leggendaria dell’Emden, la nave tedesca
che, camuffata da imbarcazione inglese,
provocò danni incalcolabili nella prima
guerra mondiale.
Così, mentre il futuro presidente Truman
ascolta i segreti di Double Skinner - il simbolo del romanzo di avventura europeo su una nave da guerra, l’autore trasporta i
lettori nel mondo contemporaneo insieme
ai protagonisti di sempre: Sara Terracini e
Oswald Breil, questa volta alle prese con
un cattivaccio globalizzato e soprattutto
globalizzante come pochi altri, pronto a
tutto pur di impadronirsi del Williamsburg
e dei suoi segreti. Che risalgono addirittura a Gengis Khan e alla sua sepoltura.
La trama è intessuta perfettamente e impreziosita dagli elementi di stretta attualità che Buticchi riesce sempre a anticipare, come Obama presidente che fa
capolino tra le pagine, Portorico, i paradisi fiscali, la guerra dei rifiuti, la minaccia
che Breil e Terracini dovranno sventare ancora una volta.
“Dov’è oggi la ricchezza vera?” si domanda lo scrittore. “In piena crisi mondiale si
parla di centinaia di miliardi di dollari depositati nei paradisi fiscali. Noi stiamo cercando di fargli la guerra per uscire dalla
crisi, ma non andrà così”.
Ha fiuto Marco Buticchi, un uomo che si è
ri-fatto da solo e che è ora di far scendere dal leggendario trespolo di bagnino di
rango, per raccontarlo dall’inizio alla fine.

Harry Truman, that had been abandoned in
the La Spezia port. After the sudden
inspiration, Buticchi’s imagination started
running wild and the memories of the
Floating White House began to merge with
those of the heroic deed of the clippers
fighting against the steam boats or of the
legendary story of the Emden, the German
ship that, disguised as an English craft,
caused massive damage in World War I.
So, whilst future president Truman listens to
Double Skinner’s secrets – the symbol of
European adventure novels – on board of a
war ship, the author takes his readers into the
contemporary world in the company of his
usual main characters: Sara Terracini and
Oswald Breil, who this time come to grips
with a globalized villain, but most of all
globalising like no one before, determined to
lay his hands on the Williamsburg and its
secrets dating all the way back to Genghis
Khan and his burial. The book’s plot is
perfectly woven and skilfully embellished by
elements of current affairs which Buticchi
always manages to anticipate with mastery,
like mentioning President Obama or
Portorico, the tax havens, the waste war or
again the threat that Breil and Terracini will
have to thwart once again.
“Where does the real wealth lie today?”
wonders the writer. “With the global crisis in
full swing, hundreds of billions of dollars are
being regularly deposited in various tax
havens. We are fighting hard against this in
order to overcome the current economic
downturn, but it won’t happen”.
Marco Buticchi has a good nose for these
things, he rebuilt his whole life from scratch
and the time has come to put aside his role
of high-profile lifeguard to start talking more
seriously about his personal experience from
beginning to end. He had a very privileged life,
with a place already reserved for him in the
elite world: influential friends, boarding
school in Switzerland, degree in economics,
the ideal job – oil trader, with trips and loads
money – the perfect wife, a top model named
Consuelo. And that is the person - along with

una top model a nome Consuelo. Proprio
quella a cui dedica - insieme alle figlie tutti i libri.
La prima vita dello scrittore era fatta di
lusso e viaggi favolosi, tutti gli anni infantili in Africa, a parlare con i Masai, a veder
morire un vecchio leone, a sentire per davvero le forze oscure e selvagge che governano un mondo altro. Più avanti i viaggi
di lavoro, tra le bombe da schivare e gli atterraggi di fortuna, sino all’avventura più
pericolosa: il tracollo della fortuna di famiglia. Via tutto, rimane solo il lavoro. E,
fortunatamente, la moglie. Che lo sostiene
nella decisione che cambierà la vita della
sua famiglia e quelle di un milione di lettori, non fosse che per lo spazio di un libro.
Marco Buticchi molla tutto, apre lo stabilimento balneare di Lerici che diventerà col
tempo una spiaggia d’élite e, mentre osserva i bagnanti dal suo famoso, abusato
trespolo di bagnino, inventa storie. Ora il
Lido di Lerici ha un albergo a quattro stelle, l’autore è famoso e i suoi libri sono tradotti in molte lingue. Una vita-romanzo,
vissuta, quindi perché scriverla? Lo scrittore avventuroso, che sa commuovere, sorprendere e anche spaventare ha paura di
qualcosa? «Certo che sì, della malattia», risponde. Non delle catastrofi, della fine del
mondo, di tutto ciò che i suoi eroi sventano e esorcizzano? “Sono per il mal comune mezzo gaudio”, conclude Buticchi, “Se
la fine è per tutti, la accettiamo meglio
che se è la nostra”. b

The writer’s first life was made of luxury and
wonderful trips, he spent most of his
childhood holidays in Africa, talking to Masai
people, watching an old lion die, truly feeling
the obscure and wild forces that rule a
different world. Later on in life he starts
travelling for work, between bombs to dodge
and emergency landings, all the way to his
most dangerous adventure: the collapse of his
family’s fortunes. Everything was gone except
from his job. And, luckily his wife, who will
support him in the decision that was going to
change his family’s life and that of millions of
readers, if not for the space of a book.
Marco Buticchi gives everything up and
opens his bathing establishment in Lerici
that, in time, will turn into a very exclusive
location. There, whilst observing bathers from
his famous and somewhat abused lifeguard
stand, he makes up stories. Now the Lido di
Lerici features a wonderful four-star hotel,
the author is well-known worldwide and his
books are translated into several languages. A
life-novel that has already been lived, so why
re-write it? Is the adventurous writer who is
able to move, shock and even scare people
afraid of anything? “Yes of course, I fear
illness”, he replies, is he not afraid of natural
disasters, the end of the world, or anything
else that his heroes try to fight and exorcize?
“I am a strong believer of the saying shared
misery is a half-joy” concludes Buticchi, “if
the end is for everyone, we accept it better
that if it was only for us”. b
