Simone Subal Gallery Mousse 25 ~ Erika Vogt NEW YORK Mythical Narratives Surface Screen Projection Production Still (Screen), 2006. Courtesy: Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles. BY CECILIA ALEMANI The film Secret Traveler Navigator, recently presented at the Whitney Biennial by Erika Vogt, constructs a mysterious narrative through the movements of silhouettes that act in a ritual manner, manipulating emblematic objects against an abstract background. Film portraits, archetypes based on the union of digital and analog techniques. Cecilia Alemani met with the artist to investigate the processes behind the creation of her videos. 156 131 Bowery, 2nd floor, New York NY 10002 / [email protected] / www.simonesubal.com / T: 917-409 0612 Simone Subal Gallery New York ~ Erika Vogt Cecilia Alemani Let’s begin with your recent installation at the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Your presentation included one video projection and two drawings. Can you tell us about the relationship between these artworks and how you conceived the whole installation? Erika Vogt The installation developed out of wanting to build a room in which the projection extended beyond the realm of the projector using very light materials. I was also interested in making an inverted black box that was more about light traveling then about light concealing. Additionally, I wanted it to be a type of anti gravity chamber in which one could experience a type of weightlessness. Both drawings, O, Dragon (which comes from the word that means to see clearly) and Step off the Curb, Man, also appear in the video in other forms and act as entry and exit points to the sequence where the artists/militia/explorers are searching. While I was making the work, I was thinking about the idea and meaning of the Secret Traveler Navigator and about volume and projection, changing forms and statelessness, about weight and balance, and the act of finding a direction. The drawings provide a vehicle for expanding the projection spatially instead of temporally so that within the space of the highly reflective room a static sense of perspective could be continually challenged. ca The video you presented is titled Secret Traveler Navigator. I thought it was a really mesmerizing video, alternating shadows and silhouettes to compose a mysterious story. Who are the characters and objects that move against the abstract backdrop? ev There is in fact a story being told. I wanted it to be oblique at times and al- most tangible at others. I was thinking about the story as an active secret agent and as one part in an unfolding series of thought processes that included the rational and the irrational, the emotive and the intellectual, as well as thinking about how one comes to their knowledge or information. The sequences in the projection are: &'$ IjWhj[h%8k_bZ[h%9Wf_jWb_ijm_j^YhWd[WdZ Ód][h\eh^eea8BK; &($ ?cW][LeoW][h%If_h_j?dZkYjehm_j^ Z_h[Yj_edWbi\hecm[Wj^[hlWd[H;: &)$ IY_[dj_ij%;nf[h_c[djWb_ij%CWjj[hCWa[h m_j^Yedl[oehX[bj8!M!Fhe`[Yj[Z9ebeh ;b[c[dji &*$ Feeh#cWdm_j^[cfjo^WdZi8BK; &+$ 8Wjjb[m_j^:hW]edWdZ>[he8!M &,$ CWia[ZCWd"_cW][i[jiZemd8!M &-$ 7hj_iji%<_[bZmeha[hi"j_c[i[jiZemd H;: &.$ 7hj_iji%C_b_j_W%;nfbeh[hi"i[WhY^_d]H;: &/$ Fe_dje\L_[m'Åm^Wjj^[oi[[#Wdj_ ]hWl_jo8BK; '&$ Fe_dje\L_[m(#m^Wjj^[oi[[#j^[ 9^WhbWjWd%CW]_Y_Wd8!M ''$ 79ekdj[hXWbWdY_d]WYj#j^[DWl_]Wjeh m_j^m[_]^jiWdZYecfWiiWdZiYWb[8!M '($ J^[m[_]^j[ZÓ]kh["Wd_ccWj[h_Wbfei_j_l[ 8!M ')$ >[heÓdZiY^WdY[WdZh[Y[_l[iW\Wj[ =H;;D '*$ DWhhWjeh%7YYekdjWdj"je]eXWYamWhZieh \ehmWhZiC?N;:9ebeh '+$ JhWl[b[h%MWo\Wh[h%>[bcicWdÅÓdZiWb_d[" ^[WZie\\_dWZ_h[Yj_ed8bk[ ca When I first came across your work it was mainly photo-based. Can you talk a bit about your approach to photography? ev I wanted to expand on the thoughts in the other work in a way that was different. For example, the photographs in the series Number Portraits relate to the sculpture Action Unrestricted. “Number Portraits” are photographs of dice taken so that all sides could be seen at once. The dice to me were like the material of film because they were transparent and made of plastic and because one could potentially see thru them. This manifested in Action Unrestricted as an animation that lays mostly dormant in an area on the floor so that it can be seen all at once in a different state. Also, in the “Motor Post Motor” series, the photographs became a way for me to expand the video installation and to make work that would prompt questions about the scale of a video in relationship to a figure. ca It seems that in works such as Record No Record or Primitive Chins you are interested in the idea of the double, the mirrored figure. Can you talk about this photographic series? Is it a reflection on the photographic medium itself? This page – Secret Traveler Navigator, 2010. Courtesy: Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles. ev The interest in reflection and phenomenological thought came out of the experience of working with James Benning and Thom Andersen at CalArts. Thom Andersen taught a Deleuze class for graduate students that consisted of reading Cinema 1 and Cinema 2 and watching excerpts of films for six hours once a week. It was great and it was something that was very inspiring to me: the idea that film was an expression of thought and that also structuralist film was putting a type of experiencing mind in a body. Sometimes what appears in the work as a double figure or mirrored figure is not. There are slight but critical differences that allow you to tell the figures apart so nothing is actually a double or a mirror. It’s been interesting for me to learn that the photographic surface can take the place of a tactile mirror but the photographic surface can also un-mirror too. My main interest is not about the medium. I’ve been using photography to talk about other mediums and also in direct combination with other mediums. ca Do you follow a narrative in your videos or is it more an intuitive process? ev My process is more intuitive. ca Can you talk about the process behind the making of video? ev The objects and materials in Secret Traveler Navigator are a crane from a toy truck, the directionals from a weather vane, a conveyor belt, the drawing of the dragon , a photograph of a wall in my old studio on which two rectangles of light illuminate the phrases “secret traveler navigator”, “thought can not be fused with images”, and “radical prediction is always a non-reality of facts”, military tent stakes, a remnant of wood, samples of screen glass that were used in The IAC Building in New York, weights, a compass, a scale, the pant legs from a man’s uniform, men’s work shoes, metal samples, and loops of film. As for the video itself, it was made using a rear projection screen as a support and by combining a performance layer with loops of projected film as a background. There are two sequences in the video that also involve the layering of film with video: the immaterial positive and the lost narrator. Secret Traveler Navigator, 2010. Courtesy: Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles. ca You were born on the east coast the moved to Los Angeles. Has this change affected – if at all – your practice? ev Yes, moving was incredibly important for me in terms of my development. I wanted a change. I had grown up right outside New York City and I wanted to see what living in another place would be like. I was already an adult when I moved here so there was a foundation in place for my practice but it was really important to me at that time to be open to being here and to having other experiences. ca Do you have any upcoming projects? ev Yes, I have a solo exhibition at Overduin and Kite in Los Angeles opening in September. The show will be called “Geometric Persecution”. That is what I am working on at the moment- trying to figure out what it means. I also have a solo project at a university here in California (UC Irvine) curated by Juli Carson in which Secret Traveler Navigator will be reinstalled in a larger room with an open window. Also, there’s a group show called “Image Transfer” curated by Sara Krajewski at the Henry Art Museum in Seattle. Top – Secret Traveler Navigator, 2010. 160 131 Bowery, 2nd floor, New York NY 10002 / [email protected] / www.simonesubal.com / T: 917-409 0612
