Media research methods: understanding interpretive approaches. Los Angeles, Sage, 2012. UPS 32-C-3559 metric and Media Research Methods: Understanding Metric and Interpretive Approaches brings the insights of a senior theorist, methodologist, and critic to the classroom. Departing from the methods recipe approach, the text explains the reasons behind the methods and makes the connections to theory and knowledge production. Written in a conversational style, the book engages students and appeals to them as media consumers and users of research. The book takes the reader through each step of the research process, outlining the procedures, differences, strengths and limitations of metric, interpretive and the newer hybrid approaches. The text lays down a strong foundation in empirical research and problem solving, addressing metric topics of hypotheses, sampling, statistics, survey and experimental protocols and interpretive topics of textual analysis, coding, critical engagement and ethnography. A special chapter at the end of the book is a helpful guide for those readers who aspire to a research and analysis career. Calabrese, Omar. L'arte del trompe-l'oeil. Milano, Jaca Book, 2011. 1 Cheney, George May, Steve Munshi, Debashish. The handbook of communication ethics. New York, Routledge, 2011. UPS 32-C-3470 The Handbook of Communication Ethics serves as a comprehensive guide to the study of communication and ethics. It brings together analyses and applications based on recognized ethical theories as well as those outside the traditional domain of ethics but which engage important questions of power, equality, and justice. The work herein encourages readers to make important connections between matters of social justice and ethical theory. This volume makes an unparalleled contribution to the literature of communication studies, through consolidating knowledge about the multiple relationships between communication and ethics; by systematically treating areas of application; and by introducing explicit and implicit examinations of communication ethics to one another. The Handbook takes an international approach, analyzing diverse cultural contexts and comparative assessments. The chapters in this volume cover a wide range of theoretical perspectives on communication and ethics, including feminist, postmodern and postcolonial; engage with communication contexts such as interpersonal and small group communication, journalism, new media, visual communication, public relations, and marketing; and explore contemporary issues such as democracy, religion, secularism, the environment, trade, law, and economics. The chapters also consider the dialectical tensions between theory and practice; academic and popular discourses; universalism and particularism; the global and the local; and rationality and emotion. An invaluable resource for scholars in communication and related disciplines, the Handbook also serves as a main point of reference in graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in communication and ethics. It stands as an exceptionally comprehensive resource for the study of communication and ethics. Hobbs, Renee. Digital and media literacy: connecting culture and classroom. Thousand Oaks, California, Corwin Press, 2011. UPS 32-C-3471 Effective communication is quite possibly the most important factor of a successful classroom. Most students communicate via a wide range of media outside of the classroom, yet almost none of those media are present in the secondary classroom. Digital and Media Literacy: Connecting Culture and the Classroom is a must-have tool for educators and school leaders that gives tips and examples as to how 21st century media can be incorporated into every classroom across every subject. Renee Hobbs demonstrates ways that teachers can not only open the lines of communication between themselves and their students, but can also get their students to employ critical thinking and analytical skills in the everyday world. Through extensive case studies and research, Renee Hobbs supplies information and example lesson plans that will help teachers to: Effectively foster students’ critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills; Integrate media literacy into every subject; Select meaningful media texts for use in the classroom; and Prepare students for university and the workforce. Huffman, Jane Bumpers Hipp, Kristine Kiefer. Reculturing schools as professional learning communities. Lanham (Maryland), ScarecrowEducation, 2003. UPS SL-6-C-418 This important work documents and examines evidence of efforts taking place in rural, 2 urban, and suburban Pre-K-12 schools that are actively engaged in creating professional learning communities (PLCs). Literature is reviewed that defines and identifies the distinguishing dimensions of PLCs. A five-year, federally funded research study is explained including the methodology and demographics of the six study schools and a synthesis of the 64 interviews. A PLC organizer (PLCO) is introduced, which realigns with Shirley Hord's original 1997 research. The organizer provides the framework to explain the five PLC dimensions and related critical attributes. The PLCO also merges Fullan's model, Phases of Change (1985), which includes initiation, implementation, and institutionalization. The authors provide extensive evidence of the progressive development of a PLC from initiation to implementation using exemplars and non-exemplars from interviews that either hinder or facilitate creating and sustaining PLCs. A new assessment tool, the Professional Learning Community Assessment (PLCA), is also presented and can be used for diagnosis and evaluation of schools as they work toward school reform efforts. Readers are also presented with information that connects professional learning community work to a new approach to school improvement. Five case studies are included that can be used in schools and university classrooms for the purpose of engaging educators in reflection, open dialogue, problem finding, and problem solving. This first-hand documented information provides readers with unique issues as they wrestle with the challenges of transforming schools into organizations that meet diverse students needs. . Jones, Paul - Holmes, David. Key concepts in media and communications. Los Angeles, Sage, 2011. UPS 32-C-3635 This book covers the key concepts central to understanding recent developments in media and communications studies. Wide-ranging in scope and accessible in style it sets out a useful, clear map of the important theories, methods, and debates. The entries critically explore the limits of a key concept as much as the traditions that define it. They include clear definitions, are introduced within the wider context of the field and each one is fully cross-referenced, is clearly illustrated with relevant examples, and provides a guide to further reading and an index. Manetti, Giovanni - Fabris, Adriano. Comunicazione. Brescia, La Scuola, 2011. . Marsh, Clive. Theology goes to the movies: an introduction to critical Christian thinking. London; New York, Routledge, 2007. UPS 32-C-3555 Drawing a comparison between religion and cinema-going, this text examines a range of contemporary films in relation to key theological concepts. Cinema as a religion-like activity is explored through cognitive, affective, aesthetic and ethical levels, identifying the religious aspects in the social practice of cinema-going. Written by a leading expert in the field, Theology Goes to the Movies analyzes: the role of cinema and Church in Western culture the power of Christian symbols and images within popular culture theological concepts of humanity, evil and redemption, eschatology and God. This is an ideal text for students seeking a new way into the study of theology. 4 Prell, Christina. Social network analysis: history, theory & methodology. Los Angeles, Sage, 2012. UPS 32-C-3634 We live in a world that is paradoxically small and vast: each of us is embedded in local communities and yet we are only a few 'links' away from anyone else in the world. This engaging book represents these interdependencies' positive and negative consequences, their multiple effects and the ways in which a local occurrence in one part of the world can directly affect the rest. Then it demonstrates precisely how these interactions and relationships form. This is a book for the social network novice on learning how to study, think about and analyse social networks; the intermediate user, not yet familiar with some of the newer developments in the field; and the teacher looking for a range of exercises, as well as an up-to-date historical account of the field. It is divided into three sections: 1. Historical & Background Concepts 2. Levels of Analysis 3. Advances, Extensions and Conclusions The book provides a full overview of the field - historical origins, common theoretical perspectives and frameworks; traditional and current analytical procedures and fundamental mathematical equations needed to get a foothold in the field. Provoyeur, Pierre. . Scott, Clive. Street photography: from Atget to Cartier-Bresson. London; New York, I. B. Tauris, 2007. UPS 32-C-3556 Street photography is perhaps the best-loved and most widely known of all photographic genres, with names like Cartier-Bresson, Brassai and Doisneau familiar even to those with a fleeting knowledge of the medium. Yet what exactly is street photography? From what viewpoint does it present its subjects, and how does this viewpoint differ from that of 5 documentary photography? Looking closely at the work Atget, Kertesz, Bovis, ReneJacques, Brassai, Doisneau, Cartier- Bresson and more, this elegantly written book unpicks Parisian street photography's complex relationship with parallel literary trends -- from Baudelaire to Soupault -- as well as its more evident affinity with Impressionist art. Street Photography reveals the genre to be poetic, even "picturesque," looking not to the type but to the individual, not to the reality of the street but to its "romance.". Tamaro, Susanna. 7
