T he Membership Department of the Chamber is responsible for all membership-related issues and ensures frequent networking events for its members, such as Italian Business Talks – a recent initiative. Members benefit from B2B meetings, business delegations, seminars, talks, panel discussions, conferences and a host of other activities through the year. This year the Department conducted a survey to better understand the needs as well as satisfaction levels of members. This way, the Department felt it could make the Chamber's services even more compatible with contemporary demands and requirements from members' point of view. Feedback mainly pointed in one direction – many members look to the Chamber for technical services such as partner searches, increased outbound delegations, sector/market analysis reports and representation in fairs and exhibitions. There was a request for more networking events and the Department is pleased to state that it has already started to work towards fulfilling these needs. Towards this end, the Department introduced 'Italian Business Talks', networking evenings that are open to members and guests. Experts from India and Italy are invited to share their experiences and speak on topics aimed at promoting successful business practices. Some of the special events the Department opened up to its members in 2009 have been: Conference for a Safer Mumbai Event: 'Lessons From 7/7 & 9/11 For A Safer Mumbai' Venue: Regal Room, Trident Hotel, Mumbai Date: 16 January 2009 This conference was an effort to learn from the experiences of London and New York in countering terrorist attacks. It was especially relevant after the events of 26/11 in Mumbai in 2008. Speakers included Mr Narinder Nayar, President, Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman, Bombay First – an organisation set up to transform Mumbai into a world class city; Mr Richard Barnes, Deputy Mayor of London; and Mr Simon Lewis, Chief Superintendent of the London Metropolitan Police. The first in the series was delivered by Professor Carlo Alberto Pratesi, who teaches Marketing and Communication at Roma Tre University, in Rome. Introduced by Mr Narinder Nayar, President, IICCI, Prof Pratesi set off – and continued – in lighthearted vein, comparing Italians to the cell phone. “To understand Italians, just think of the cell phone,” the professor declared. “Italians are the number one users of cell phones in the world. That is why the main characteristics of Italian business people can be equated with eight features of the cell phone,” he said, drawing parallels between the two to illustrate the nuances of Italian business culture. The talk was followed by a question and answer 80 D Desks and Departments crescendo. It includes 150 top-notch automotive companies, which can potentially manufacture a vehicle from the drawing board (styling, engineering, prototyping) to mass production (tooling, automation, components and systems, assembly, logistic and services). The 150 companies under Project FCTC were selected from among 1,400 which represented the automotive supply chain. The selection criteria included the strength of their technical, qualitative and managerial capabilities. The capacity to innovate and conduct R&D activities are also distinctive features of FCTC member companies – 45 per cent own R&D facilities, over 30 per cent registered patents in 82 Desks and Departments the last five years and a further 25 per cent have participated in national or European research projects. The project made three visits to India, in January, April and August this year. While the first two delegations focused on introducing Turin-based companies only, the third delegation was a mission for Turin-based companies already present in India as subsidiaries or JVs with Indian partner companies. During the third visit, the delegation attended the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Automotive Components Manufacturers’ Association (ACMA) Annual Conventions in New Delhi. The delegation also met with automotive companies in Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai. Since 2002, FCTC has involved 70 international brands. It participated in 50 workshops in Piedmont with worldwide buyers, made 20 commercial missions, attended 1,100 business meetings and made 300 company visits. In 2008, the project also boasted orders for 4.3 m euros and orders worth 21 m euros are currently being negotiated. Global award As a recognition of the quality of the efforts made, FCTC has been the winning project of the 2009 edition of the World Chambers Competition biennial global awards program dedicated to the most innovative projects launched by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry all over the world. The 2009 awards ceremony was held in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in June 2009. V eneto is one of Italy’s 20 regions and boasts a flourishing business community, home to more than 450,000 companies, most of them small and medium enterprises. These companies account for more than 14 per cent of Italy’s national exports. It was, therefore, reason to cheer when a delegation from Maharashtra visited Veneto in September 2008 and forged several new business partnerships with companies in the Veneto Region. The visit was organised by Centro Estero Veneto (CEV - Foreign Trade Centre of Veneto) along with the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce. The delegation from Maharashtra was led by the state’s Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was accompanied by top dignitaries of the State Government. CEV organised meetings for the Maharashtra Government with Vendemiano Sartor, Minister Economic Development, Research and Innovation Policies, Veneto Region, and other government officials of the Veneto regional government. On this occasion, Azeez Khan, Principal Secretary, Industries, Government of Maharashtra, and Sergio Trevisanato, Regional Secretary for Industry, Education and Training, Veneto Region, signed a Declaration of Intent on Cooperation between Veneto and Maharashtra. The declaration highlighted the common desire 86 Desks and Departments to enhance, exchange and expand business cooperation between the two regions, particularly in the fields of agro food, biotechnology, nanotechnology, logistics and environmental technologies. Two Memoranda Signed Mr Deshmukh also oversaw the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU). One MoU was signed between the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture, and the Foreign Trade Centre of the Veneto Region. The second MoU was signed between the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture, National Agriculture & Food Analysis & Research Institute (NAFARI) and Veneto Agricoltura, Italy. VEGA Park Venice Science and Technology Gateway, or VEGA, is Italy’s first science and technology park. It is also an international model for environmental and industrial reconversion, and a network for universities, research centres and the industrial sector. The park was set up in 1993 to kick start the process of urban and environmental regeneration in the industrial area of Porto Marghera, one of Europe’s largest industrial areas, through a modern conception of development and services, and is now a base for 200 companies that employ 2,000 employees. VEGA engages and promotes companies involved in nanotechnologies, ICT and the digital media, environment and sustainable development, cultural heritage, aerospace, biotechnologies and advanced services. After the Maharashtra delegation’s September 2008 visit, Giorgio Mattiello, International Projects Advisor, VEGA, and Gianpietro Marchiori, Managing Director, VEGA, visited Maharashtra in July 2009 to moot the idea of a similar science and technology project in India. VEGA’s expertise would be invaluable in assisting the Maharashtra Government’s plans for an Innovation Park. Discussions were held between VEGA and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), the nodal body for the development of infrastructure in Mumbai. According to the MMRDA, the Innovation Park Project would involve an investment of Rs 10 bn to build the proposed park on a 2,000–3,000-acre plot. An Innovation Park on the outskirts of Mumbai could see collaboration with VEGA in the fields of nanotechnology and biotechnology. “Our talks are at a nascent stage but such parks could come up near Panvel or Lavasa near Pune,” MMRDA Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad has said. It is currently working on a techno-economic feasibility study for the project, according to Mr Gaikwad.
