87 87 Terrasini Terrasini Ubicazione geografica The municipality of Terrasini overlooks the Gulf of Castellammare: the city extends over flat land, bathed in the North by the sea and surrounded by hills and mountains. The territory started to be called “terra sinus”, land of the gulf. According to other interpretations, maybe better ones, Terrasini derives from terra sinorum, land of the inlets, thanks to its sinuous and jagged coast, rich in approaches and natural caves that extends between the Lido della Ciuccia and the beach of San Cataldo. The first town center, due to reliable statements, is dated back to the time of Arab domination. After that the city was extended by the Normans, who conquered the borgo under Roger I of Sicily. He built lots of abbeys to spread the culture of his people. In medieval period the small feudal borgo was acquired by the monastery of San Martino, and after it passed into the hands of the rich La Grua-Talamanca family, princes of Carini. They built the eighteenth-century castle, today’s Town Hall, and the Cataldi building, today’s prestigious Claudio Catalfio library. Before 1836, Terrasini and Favarotta were two local authorities, that had different past and life, while sharing some religious problems. On October 17th 1836 Fernando II di Borbone, King of Sicily, decided that Favarotta was no longer part of the municipality of Cinisi. Favarotta was aggregated to the sea, to the municipality of Terrasini. The union of 1836 with Favarotta determined the borders that are also the borders of the present day. Economy Local agriculture gives priority to the cultivation of citrus-fruits, grapes, olives and almond. Very relevant is the fishery production thanks to numerous fish varieties. The most common handicraft objects are the so-called quartare, clay amphoras. 84 Palazzo D’Aumale (the Regional Museum) is divided in three sectors: naturalistic, archeological and ethno-antropological, plus a permanent exhibition of carretti siciliani, the typical Sicilian cart. Villa Fassini an elegant Art Nouveau building that was granted to the master architect Ernesto Basile, is located in the green suburbs of the city, with olive, lemon and orange trees. It belonged to the Florios and it was also a meeting place of an important hippy-group in the 70’s, made of young people from all over Italy and Europe. Church Maria SS. Delle Grazie, Mother Church of Terrasini built in Romanesque style with the form of a Latin cross, was built exactly where, June 6th 1683 Baron Giovanni Donato Gavazza, Lord of Terrasini, had built the small church dedicated to the Madonna della Grazia. Palazzo Cataldi was the summer residence of the La Grua princes from Carini. The building in eighteenth-century style has tympanums and doorway with columns, that embellishes the whole facade. 85 85 Valuable environmental area Famous people Even if he wasn’t born in Terrasini, he’s one of the local famous people: Henri d’Orléans (Paris, January 16th 1822- Zucco, May 7th 1897) duke of Aumale, bought in 1853 the Sicilian territory of Zucco, 3300 hectares of land of olive trees and vineyards, where important works were realized and agricultural innovations introduced. Palazzo d’Aumale was bought for this activity. His corpse had homages from the highest political, militar and religious offices and from the French consul. Then a French battleship brought back the duke’s body. Natural Reserve Capo Rama 86 Cliffs of Cala Rossa 87 87
