Vedere il difficile agevolmente trattato, ci dà un’idea dell’impossibile” Goethe “The Difficult and the Good are the very stuff of art. Seeing difficult things easily dealt with gives us a notion of the Impossible”. In questa prospettiva il progetto si è avviato a definire spazi, forme, The dialectical significance of Beauty, Game and Symbols in men’s lives has provided us with a starting point. From this perspective, our project sets out to define spaces, shapes, decorations and furnishings through which certain legitimate human expectations may evolve and blossom. decori e arredi per mezzo dei quali possano svilupparsi e sbocciare alcune legittime aspettative umane. ; dove rilanciare i desideri legittimi di privacy e, insieme, di relazioni e di scambio; dove soddisfare bisogni genuini, decomprimere, far debordare, o rovesciare - se nel caso - a favore di eventi A joyful and tasteful “collection”, sunny even, emotionally rich and deeply rooted in the morphology and structures of tradition, flexible in its “articulability”, something of an allegory on the “essence of dwelling”. A valid result: a “Wunderkammer” which is not virtual, but conceived as a residence animated by poetry, an oasis of wellbeing, through which runs the perceptible thrill of a surreal gust of wind; a place where man may live in harmony in his own “ancient ... little world”, a world sparkling with cultural touches where comfort is not synonymous with involutional processes of recognition and reification; a place where it is finally possible to get in touch once again with all that is essential, such as the seasons, the landscape, open spaces, archaeological remains, the rising and setting of the sun, the moon and the stars...; a place where one’s legitimate desire for privacy, as well as for human relations and sharing can find new expression; a place where it is possible to satisfy one’s own genuine needs as well as to decompress, overflow or - if necessary - overthrow the conventional environment of the artificial fantastici i climi stereotipati dell’universo artificiale e i tranelli dei sistemi comunicativi post-cibernetici; dove provocare anche certe ipotesi creative; dove affermare l’autonomia delle proprie scelte morfologiche e decorative e quindi ritrovare se stessi in una espansione risonante della propria identità. Un punto in cui si sia concentrato e rappreso l’infinito, che lì ondeggi. universe and the tricks of the post-cybernetic communication systems in favour of fantastic events; a place that will give rise to certain creative assumptions and where the autonomy of one’s morphological and decorative choices can be asserted, allowing an individual to get in touch with himself once again, in what is a resounding expansion of his own identity. The aim of the project is, within a concept of “mutating traditions”, to “carry” a well-established teaching heritage towards a new openness to decorative values. But can an architect ever, above and beyond the expressing of images, tales and spaces of unblemished joy, give us back the capacity to smile with candour and amazement, just like children rapt in contemplation of the unexpected plenty of a large toy emporium? A house long dreamt of? An oasis of new quality, part of a sort of “archipelago” deeply integrated in a decoration developed and bloomed within “landscapes of the soul”, feelings and sensations of beauty. A metaphor of a garden in which every day to be reborn and make merry; a garden fascinating in its beauty and luxuriance, echoing with the softest harmonies, fragrant with refined scents... A place characterised by a graceful lightness, finally free from the fetters of the customary prejudices and flaws of those devoid of any sense of “humour” and irony. A point where the infinite, concentrated and gathered, reverberates. Even though utopia rarely becomes a reality on this planet, even though there is perhaps no such thing as “harmonia mundi”, who knows, we might just manage to come somewhere near the “beautiful” - albeit not perfect - house of our dreams. When at the century’s end, we have the feeling that we are going nowhere, and are left with no way out, when the global village seems to threaten private life more and more, when the link between the culture of symbols and the culture of material things, between the deep identity and the needs of the individual appears to be broken, why don’t we place our trust in images whose contents are not taken for granted and are, at least, comforting for the “planetary” and computer man of the future? And yet, won’t the symbols that want to emerge here be those that highlight the passage from the “obscurity” of the earth to the brightness of the sky? That it so say, those indicating the coming to the light from the dark depths of our time? Symbols that are the expression of what’s new, but which ethically and methodologically take root in a sort of “eternal present” of architecture (as Giedion asserts)? Although we never know whether there is anyone to receive the signals that have been sent, we are aided by the conviction that we have flung ourselves into a “parallel” architecture, because we suspect that man, his health, his history, his irrepressible desire to fly high are at stake today more than ever before. As we have shown, items of furniture are not lifeless objects but, like the people with whom we are in daily contact, they have the power to affect our lives and to subtly change us. nostra vita e di trasformarci sottilmente. E “Fragments” ? And the “Fragments”? They are fragments that, paradoxically, lack nothing and participate as characters in the big “jigsaw puzzle”, or theatre, that is the world. Milan, April 1999 Milano, aprile 1999 G.
