1. The MART (Modern and Contemporary Art Museum) of Rovereto, constitutes a successful attempt to solve this delicate problem, thanks to Serisolar. The museum complex in the province of Trento features the presence of 183 skylights on the roof, corresponding to approximately 2000 m2 of glazed surfaces, plus 200 m2 of vertical transparent surfaces cladding the office area. Both these glazed parts have been found to have some of the typical “flaws” of these types of structural cladding, consisting mainly of the deterioration of the gaskets around the windows, difficulty of controlling the temperature in the rooms in spring and summer with the air-conditioning system and the internal sun screens only, and sudden activation of the smoke and heat extraction system due to overheating of the air under the skylights. As a possible solution to these problems, Serisolar proposed its reflecting sun-screening film, a new and important technological innovation for Energysaving grazing. A number of tests carried out by means of thermometers checked once an hour for about 15 days in May 2007 on one of the skylights of the museum revealed significant results. For the same outside temperature of 22.6°C, the temperature reached by a skylight yet to be treated reached 82.7°C, while that of a skylight treated with sunscreening films was only 44°. It was therefore decided to install the reflecting sun-screening film on all the 183 skylights of the roof. These sun-screening films for outdoor use have excellent performance levels determined by a number of factors: high direct reflection of energy, low heat absorption in way of the multiple glazing , low energy transmission, vast and differentiated options in terms of gradations of light with low and high mirror effect, barrier effect against UV rays and therefore the possibility of protecting the objects present behind the glazing, such as flooring, curtains, works of art and so on, ease of cleaning and absence of maintenance, improved aesthetic quality of the transparent surface. Among the most significant advantages of use of these sun-screening films, the importance of energy-saving is obvious, with a rapid return on the investment for installing them. The cost of the film is amortised within 3 to 4 years at most, thanks to the drop in cooling costs, since use of the air-conditioning system drops by 30 to 50 %. The activity carried out at the MART in Rovereto led to a yearly reduction in the workload of the refrigerating units by 40%, with a resulting decrease in the consumption of energy and CO2 emissions in the air.
