Curriculum of Pietro Trifone
Born in Rome and graduated at "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Pietro Trifone is Full Professor of History of the Italian
Language at the University of Roma "Tor Vergata". Since 1996 to 2004 he holds the office of Rector of the University for
Foreigners of Siena. His research activity embraces various fields, ranging from the analysis of grammatical structures of
contemporary Italian to the history of literary and popular language, mainly with reference to the relationship between
linguistic change and social life. Together with Luca Serianni, he has edited the three-volume History of the Italian
Language, published by Einaudi (1993-94), with contributions by fifty scholars. Together with Maurizio Dardano, he is
co-author of a New Grammar of the Italian Language, well-known in Italy and abroad (Zanichelli Publ., 1997); with
Massimo Palermo, of an Essential Italian Grammar (Zanichelli, 2007). He has also carried out studies on plurilingualism
of 16th century (I cantici di Fidenzio, Salerno Publ., 1981), on the language of politics (Dizionario politico popolare,
Salerno Publ., 1981), on regional varieties of Italian and roman dialect (Roma e il Lazio, UTET, 1992; Storia linguistica di
Roma, Carocci, 2008), on the language of theatre (L'italiano a teatro, Istituti Editoriali e Poligrafici Internazionali, 2000),
on the italian language of the Renaissance (Rinascimento dal basso, Bulzoni , 2006), on the italian linguistic identity
(Lingua e identità, Carocci, 2006, new edition 2009), on italian "incorrect" language from Dante until today (Malalingua,
Il Mulino, 2007) and on linguistic repercussions of national factiousness (Storia linguistica dell'Italia disunita, Il Mulino,
2010).
