F: Ciao Anu, puoi presentarti e riassumere la tua esperienza nello sport?
F: Hi Anu, can you introduce yourself and
your sport experience?
A: Ciao, mi chiamo Anu Vehviläinen e sono
finlandese, ho 36 anni e possiedo rottweiler
dal 1998. Gli sport con i cani che ho praticato
sono stati quelli della mia nazione quali la
pista nel bosco e le prove di ricerca & soccorso. Mi sono interessata all'IPO nel 2004
ma il mio cane di allora non aveva le doti per
questo sport. Il primo cane con il quale ho
programmato di fare IPO è arrivato nel 2005
ma non abbiamo mai partecipato ad alcuna
gara. Drago (Drago vom Tanneneck) è il
primo cane che ho preparato e condotto fino
all'IPO 3. Quest'anno ho partecipato con
Drago al campionato del mondo per rottweiler IFR, ottenendo come risultato finale il
14mo classificato, punteggio 70-93-96 per un
totale di 259 punti, siamo inoltre stati
premiati come “miglior difesa” al campionato
del mondo.
A: Hi, I’m Anu Vehviläinen from Finland, age
36 years and I have had rottweilers since 1998.
Dog sports that I’ve done are our nationals
sports tracking in the forest and search &
rescue. I got interested about IPO in 2004 but
the current dog wasn’t up for the task. The
first dog which I was planning to do IPO came
2005 but we never made it to trial fields him.
Drago (Drago vom Tanneneck) is the first dog
I’ve trained to IPO 3 level. This year I participated with Drago to IFR Championships with
final placement 14, scores 70-93-96 total 259
and we got awarded from the best protection
part in the Championships.
F: Perchè hai scelto questo cane?
A: Innanzitutto per il pedigree. Il padre Drago
vom Atzelgift appartiene a vecchie linee da
lavoro. La madre Orla vom Hause Anin
proviene da Calle vom Ehndorfer Moor.
Niente che potresti trovare facilmente oggigiorno. Le vecchie linee materne von Hause
Anin secondo me sono buone. Secondo:
conosco gli allevatori dalla mia prima importazione, che proviene anche da li. Proveniva
da linee completamente differenti. Non fui in
grado di andare a scegliere Drago personalmente. Dissi ad Uwe quale tipologia di cucciolo volevo dalla cucciolata e le cose che
consideravo importanti.

F: Why you choiced this dog?
A: First of all, pedigree. Father Drago vom
Atzelgift, old working lines. Mother Orla vom
Hause Anin, straight out of Calle vom Ehndorfer Moor. Not something you found very easily
nowadays. Motherline old vom Hause Anin
lines that are in my opinion good.

dieci settimane quando abbiamo potuto
prenderlo.
F: Drago ha delle regole? Quali regole?
A: Naturalmente Drago ha regole, ogni cane
deve avere regole se speri possa vivere una
vita piacevole con se stesso. Le regole di
Drago sono molto semplici: quando do lui
un comando, lui deve ascoltare. Ed io do un
comando quando c'è bisogno di un
comando.
Nessun assillo e rispetto reciproco.
Second: I know the breeders from my first
import, it came also from them. He was out
of totally different lines. I wasn't able to go
and choose Drago myself. I told Uwe what
type of puppy I want from the litter and what
things are important. So with that information Drago was the one that met the requirements. He was 10 weeks old when we were
able to pick him up.
F: How is everyday life with Drago, what
kind of house rules you keep?
A: Naturally Drago has rules, every dog must
have rules if you wish to live comfortable life
with them. Dragos’ rules are very simple;
when I give a command him, he must listen.
And I only command when there is a need for
it. No nagging and mutual respect.
F: How was your first IFR IPO World
Championship with your dog?
F: Com'è stato il tuo primo campionato
del mondo IFR con il tuo cane?
A: L'IFR di quest'anno per me è stato un
sogno diventato realtà. Essere stata in grado
di partecipare ai principali eventi di lavoro
della nostra razza era già grandioso. Nel
complesso l'esperienza è stata davvero bella
per me e Drago. Il viaggio verso Rottweil è
stato lungo, appena meno di 2000 Km dalla
Finlandia (abbiamo viaggiato in macchina
fino a Rottweil) e lo stesso per il ritorno ma
vorrei fare lo stesso viaggio tante altre volte.
Drago è stato un grande compagno di viaggio. Ha avuto un giusto atteggiamento per
l'intero viaggio, si è adattato alla temperatura
che era molto più alta rispetto alla Finlandia,
ha fatto un buon allenamento durante la

A: This year’s IFR was for me a dream come
true. To be able to participate to our breeds’
main working event of the year was just
great. Overall the whole experience was
really nice for me and Drago. Road to Rottweil was long, a little under 2000km from
Finland (we drove to Rottweil) and same back
but I would do it again any given day. Drago
was just great travel companion. He was in
good mood through the whole trip, did adapt
well to the temperature which was much
higher than in Finland, did good trainings in
the week prior the trial and in the trial weekend worked in the level and style that I just
have to be satisfied with. Drago worked with
and for me with his whole heart and I have to
appreciate that. Tracking was the weakest
point but I’m still satisfied to our final result.
The conditions in the field were not easy but
Drago fought the track through. We just need
to train more and try to get better.

week-end di gara ha lavorato al livello e con
lo stile per cui devo ritenermi soddisfatta.
Drago ha lavorato per me e con me, con tutto
il suo cuore ed io ho apprezzato tutto ciò. La
pista è stato il nostro punto debole ma sono
ancora soddisfatta del nostro risultato finale.
Le condizioni del terreno non erano facili ma
Drago si è impegnato per tutta la traccia.
Dobbiamo allenarci di più e provare a fare
meglio.
F: Describe your way to prepare your dog
for this athletic trials
F: Descrivi il tuo modo per preparare il
tuo cane per questa prova atletica.
F: We talked about the technique: how is
important working drive and how is important correct exercise for you?
A: La preparazione per le sessioni di allenamento e di gara cominciano appena dopo il
termine della sessione precedente. Questo
significa che comincio a costruire le condizioni fisiche di base e la resistenza del mio
cane. Questo include lunghe passeggiate nel
bosco,
corsa
con
la
bicicletta
(principalmente trotto ma intervallato da
alcuni scatti) ed appena arriva la neve
indosso le mie scarpe da neve ed attraversiamo la neve alta in lunghe passeggiate. Uso
anche la piscina quando possibile, lo giudico
un esercizio eccellente. Quando arriva
l'allenamento prima delle gare, facciamo un
programma di allenamento appena sappiamo il calendario di gare. Solitamente tutte le
sezioni (A-B-C) sono frammentate in piccole
sessioni che noi alleniamo separatamente e
mettiamo tutte insieme da

A: Preparing for a training and trial season
starts right after the previous season has
ended. Which means I start to build up the
basic physical fitness and endurance to my
dog. This includes long walks in the woods,
running with bicycle (mainly trotting but
some fast intervals also) and once the snow
comes, I put on my snow shoes and we hit the
deep snow for long walks. I also use swimming when possible, it is excellent exercise.
What comes to training before trials, we make
a training plan once we know the trial dates.
Usually all routines (A-B-C) are broken down
to smaller pieces which we train and put it all
together about four to two weeks before trial.
The last week before trial is light training. Usually one obedience training, one bitework 2-3
days before and 2-3 tracks depending what
kind of working the dog shows.
A: . High working drive and correct technique are both important to me. But I prefer
to take small technique error if the dog
shows good drive and feeling. In my opinion
technical errors are easier to fix than problems with low drive and wrong learned feeling towards working. Actually some technical problems are often caused because the
dog shows too low working drive.
I believe that you cannot train JUST technique, feeling is always attached to the training. If you first teach your dog that obedience
is something a bit boring and can be done
with low activity, how it is supposed to
understand that one day it should be super
active when commands don’t create a “wow
– we are working!!!”-feeling for the dog.

settimana prima della prova facciamo un
allenamento leggero. Solitamente un allenamento di obbedienza, uno di difesa due o tre
giorni prima e due o tre piste a seconda del
tipo di lavoro che il cane necessita.
get when doing obedience in high drive is
that doing control in bitework is whole lot
easier, because the dog is used to work and
obey in high drive. And it is so cool to see a
dog that works willingly with power and
good expression with its’ handler.
F: Abbiamo parlato di tecniche: quanto
sono importanti le pulsioni e quanto è
importante la correttezza dell'esercizio
secondo te?
A: La pulsione e la corretta tecnica sono
entrambe importanti per me. Ma io preferisco fare qualche piccolo errore tecnico se il
cane mostra buone pulsioni e feeling. Secondo me gli errori tecnici sono più facili da
fissare rispetto ai problemi che puoi avere
con una bassa spinta e l'avere costruito un
rapporto errato con il lavoro. Attualmente
alcuni problemi tecnici sono spesso causati
dal fatto che i cani mostrano pulsioni al
lavoro troppo basse. Io credo che non puoi
allenare solo la tecnica, il rapporto è sempre
connesso all'allenamento. Se tu per primo
insegni al tuo cane che l'obbedienza è qualcosa di noioso e che può essere eseguita con
poca voglia, come puoi sperare che un
giorno possa mostrarsi molto attivo quando
il sentire i comandi per il cane non creano

un idea del tipo “wow, stiamo lavorando!”.
L'eccellenza che tu hai in un obbedienza in
grande spinta è quella che realizzi facilmente
durante i controlli in difesa, perché il cane sta
sia lavorando che obbedendo in grande
spinta. E' così “cool” vedere un cane che
mostra voglia di lavorare con potenza e
buona espressione con il proprio conduttore.
F: Quali sono state le tue impressioni
circa la spinta al lavoro al campionato
IFR 2012?
A: Non ho potuto vedere così tante performance quante averi voluto. Essendo una
concorrente avevo un programma pianificato. Ho visto i campionati IFR dall'edizione
in Olanda nel 2008. Nell'insieme il numero di
cani con buone spinte sono aumentati negli
anni e questa è una grande cosa. Naturalmente c'è una variabilità ed è possibile
vedere cani che mostrano bassa spinta in
obbedienza. Cosa divertente ed anche buona
se pensi alla razza è che gli stessi cani fanno
la difesa mostrando buona spinta. Per cui se
vedi un cane che presenta poca spinta in
obbedienza non significa necessariamente
che stai guardando un cane di basse qualità.
Quello che stai vedendo è una questione di
stile di addestramento o di metodo. Spero
che i giudici catturino nel proprio animo le
nuove regole FCI IPO. Io penso che è eccezionale il fatto che oggi ci sia una così grande
enfasi attorno al cane ed al suo mostrare
buon atteggiamento e piacere quando lavora.
F: Quanto è importante lo stato mentale
per un cane da sport e qual'è lo stato
mentale che vuoi costruire nel tuo cane?
A: Un corretto stato mentale e la relazione
sono le fondamenta e tu costruirai su ciò
tutto il resto. Il mio obiettivo è avere un cane
che mostra alta attività ed allo stesso tempo
che sia concentrato sull'obiettivo.

F: Which were your impression about
working drive at IFR IPO 2012?
A: I didn’t get to see as many performances
live as I would have hoped. Being a participant myself created some schedule issues.
I’ve seen IFR Championships starting from
Netherlands 2008. Overall the amount of
dogs working with good drive has increased
over the years, which is a really good thing.
Naturally, there is variation and also dogs that
show low drive in obedience could be seen.
What is funny and actually good thing when
you think about the breed is that then the
same dogs come to bitework and show good
drive. So when you see a dog that presents
low drive in obedience it doesn’t necessarily
mean that you are looking at a low quality
dog. What you see is also very much a question of training style and methods.
I hope the judges take the new FCI IPO rules
into their hearts. I think it is great that there is
now so big emphasis that the dog should
show good expression and willingness when
it is working.
F: How is important the state of mind for
an sport dog and which is the state of
mind you want build in your dog?
A: The right state of mind and feeling is the
foundation and you build everything else on
top of it.
My goal is to have a dog that shows high
activity and is at the same time concentrated
to the task at hand.

F: In the past we talked about different
behaviour of the dog in the different
moment of defence: can you talk about
this?
F: In passato noi abbiamo parlato circa
differenti comportamenti del cane nei
diversi momenti della fase di difesa: vuoi
parlare di questo?
A: Well, again I wish to see a dog that is showing good working drive and where you can
see that the dog works from his hearts. Loves
the fight with the helper and aims to dominate him. In addition to that, I hope to see
correct control, good guardings, fast attacks,
strong grips, clear overgoing phases and
clean outs.
At the blind dog should be self-assured, consistent and pressuring in his guarding, at the
escape – fast attack and then a clear overgoing phase (this is actually even mentioned at
the new FCI IPO rules), good out and after
that start right away a intense guarding. No
difference whether the guarding is silence or
barking but I wish to see the dog keep a
strong eye on the helper in every guarding
showing it is active towards the helper.
Regardles of the breed, it is always nice to see
a dog that works with power and still does
correct control. But to see it done by a rottweiler makes chills go down your spine, it is
always a bit more special to me.
A: Bene, di nuovo io spero di vedere un cane
che mostra buona attitudine al lavoro e dove
puoi vedere che il cane lavora dal suo cuore.
Ama il contrasto con il figurante ed ambisce a
dominarlo. Inoltre spero di vedere controlli
corretti, buone vigilanze, entrate veloci, prese
forti, chiare fasi di transizione e lascia puliti.
Al revier il cane dovrebbe essere sicuro,
determinato e pressante nella vigilanza, alla
fuga mostrare un'attacco veloce e dopo una
chiara fase di transizione (questo è attualmente anche mensionato nelle nuove regole
IPO FCI), buoni lascia e dopo di ciò cominciare subito un intensa vigilanza. Nessuna
differenza se la vigilanza è silenziosa o abbaiando ma spero di vedere che il cane

mantiene un forte contatto con gli occhi sul
figurante in ogni vigilanza e si mostra attivo
verso il figurante. In riferimento alla razza, è
sempre un piacere vedere un cane che lavora
con potenza ed ancora mostra un corretto
controllo. Ma vedere questo fatto da un rottweiler fa venire un brivido alla mia schiena, è
sempre un pò più speciale per me.
F: “una chiara fase di transizione”?
A: Guarda per esempio il lavoro di difesa
fatto da Tammikallion Lucky Luke con Annakaisa Loiri al campionato FCI di questo anno.
E' nella fase in cui il figurante si ferma e si
pone in posizione per rendere il “lascia” possibile. In quel momento il cane deve mantenere la presa. Non deve lasciare appena il
figurante si ferma. Il lascia dovrebbe e deve
venire dal comando. Durante la fase di transizione il cane si prepara allo scambio di pulsioni. Dalla predazione all'aggressività è
richiesta per avere un buon lascia ed una
rapida vigilanza dopo il lascia.

F: "A clear overgoing phase"??
A: Look at for example the bitework done by
Tammikallion Lucky Luke with Annakaisa
Loiri in this years FCI Championships. Overgoing phase starts / can be seen from the
moment forward when the helper has
stopped and makes the position to make
"out" possible. There the dog must keep the
grip and continue working. Not to do out
right away automatically when the helper
stops. Out should and must come from command. During the overgoing phase the dog
prepares to make the drive change. From
prey to aggression which is required in order
to have a good out and a fast start to guarding
after out. The new rules say that overgoing
phase is a thing that dog should show.
At simplest it means that the handler just
waits a few second longer before commands
out.If the dog shows overgoing well naturally.
But often dogs that are already driven to trial
routine tend to become automatic in outing.
And those dogs require training for this.

stati premiati per la migliore difesa
(94pt). Al campionato del mondo IFR
2012 tu e Drago siete stati premiati per la
migliore difesa (96pt). Entrambe lavorate
in team con lo stesso figurante. E' solo
una coincidenza o cosa?
A: Siamo fortunate ad avere un buon team
attorno. Io penso che la migliore difesa nello
stesso team per due anni di seguito è il risultato di due cose. La prima, molto duro lavoro
e intensi allenamenti. La seconda, la giusta
quantità di fortuna di cui hai sempre bisogno
in una gara in cui dovere mettere tutti i pezzi
al loro posto.
F: Molte grazie Anu per questa intervista.
Io credo che mostri la tua esperienza e
l'idea che con il giusto feeling ed il giusto
lavoro si può ottenere qualcosa di importante. Auguro il meglio a te ed a Drago
nelle prossime competizioni sportive.

F: On IFR WC 2011 Tiina Saaranluoma
and Toro (Manouman Mammuttimanfred) were awarded for the best defence
(94pt). On IFR WC 2012 you and Drago
were awarded for the best defence
(96pt). Both you and Tiina work in team
with the same helper. Is only a coincidence or what?
A: We are lucky to have a good team around
us. I think the best defence to the same team
two years in a roll is a result from two things.
First; a lot of hard work and thoughtful training, second; the right amount of luck you also
always need in a trial for the pieces to come
to their places.
