Oggetto: progetto “Un Americano a Perugia”- proposte didattiche.
Si comunica che anche quest’anno il planetario “Ignazio Danti”, annesso all’I.T.T.S. "A. Volta", ospiterà
un docente statunitense, che terrà in cupola lezioni in lingua inglese per le scuole superiori nei giorni 11-12
aprile 2013. Il docente, presente in Italia per il XXVIII Convegno Nazionale dell’Associazione dei planetari
d’Italia, PLANIT, che si svolgerà quest’anno a Cagliari il 13-14 aprile 2013, terrà lezioni anche presso il
planetario di Brescia e di Gorizia.L’iniziativa, patrocinata dall’ANISN-Umbria, è inserita nel piano di
collaborazioni internazionali con l’IPS (International Planetarium Society).
Essendo il numero dei posti limitato, gli Istituti Superiori, interessati a far partecipare i propri studenti
all’iniziativa, devono presentare domanda entro e non oltre il 28 febbraio 2013 mediante la compilazione del
modulo allegato.
Il docente, inoltre, propone un workshop per docenti (max 16 partecipanti), che si svolgerà giovedì 11
aprile alle ore 15:00, ed un incontro per il pubblico (max 54 partecipanti), che si svolgerà alle 21:00 dello
stesso giorno.
Al workshop, al termine del quale sarà rilasciato un attestato di partecipazione, possono iscriversi, entro e
non oltre il 28 febbraio 2013, docenti di discipline diverse con conoscenze base della lingua inglese; per
l’attività rivolta al pubblico è necessario prenotarsi (al n. 320/7572370 – [email protected] ) entro il
10 aprile 2013 ed il costo è di 5.00 euro per gli adulti e 3.00 per gli under 18.
Il modulo per le adesioni, piano del workshop, della lezione per gli studenti e dell’attività per il
pubblico sono in allegato, mentre il quadro orario delle lezioni, a cui ciascun gruppo di studenti sarà
assegnato, verrà comunicato entro il 15 marzo 2013.

(Harry Potter theme night)
Description:
There are seven passages in and out of Hogwarts, and one passageway unknown to most.
Come be sorted into your House, and then begin the quest to find your way into
Hogwarts. Once there, we will undertake a lesson at the Astronomy tower with Professor
Sinistra, learning to find “passages” in the skies!
Summary of Events:





Create Platform 9 ¾ sign to place out front. If possible, have staff member play the
role of Hagrid and greet all visitors outside, showing them the way to Hogwarts
(“First years, this way!”).
Have a staff member play the role of Professor McGonagall who sorts each
newcomer into their House after they enter.
Everyone is directed to Hogsmeade and ushered into the Hogs Head Inn (some
designated area before entering the planetarium). If possible, serve drinks (such as
sparkling grape juice).
Underneath some of the cups are either letters or words. Any time a letter or word is
discovered, they should be directed to give them to the bar owner, Aberforth
Dumbledore (need a staff member to play this role). He will write the letter/word on
whatever is available to project so the people can see it (we used an overhead
projector) and allow the audience to unscramble them once they have all been found.
o The letters will spell “ARIANA” – the girl in the portrait. She was the sister to
Aberforth and Albus Dumbledore.
o The words will spell “You know what to do.” This is the key phrase to be
spoken to the portrait of Ariana which will open the secret passage to
Hogwarts, from the bar, to the Room of Requirement. At this point we lead
the audience through the “secret passage” and “step out” to head up the stairs
to the astronomy tower to the lesson (the planetarium).
In the planetarium, I will do a basic night sky presentation, pointing out “star
passages” (using one familiar star pattern to find others)
o The Big Dipper asterism of Ursa Major points to Polaris in Ursa Minor in one
direction, and to Leo the Lion in the other! Follow the arc of the Big Dipper’s
handle to the bright star Arcturus in Bootes. Imagine Bootes as an ice cream
cone, and Corona Borealis becomes a second scoop that has fallen off, or a
magic basket of some Native Americans. Turn the magic basket into a picnic
basket, and the lid points to a beautiful butterfly, which is really Hercules!
Then back to the Dipper’s handle, arc to Arcturus again, but this time speed
on to Spica in Virgo!
o In the Winter sky, identify Orion the Hunter. Use his belt stars to find Sirius,
in Canis Major and Aldeberan, the eye of Taurus the Bull. Then circle around
Orion with bright stars to discover Canis Minor, Gemini, and Auriga.

SkyLore: A Teacher Workshop
Objectives:
 Participate in an activity that will help explain how different cultures developed their
own constellations and skylore.
 Share books with astronomical references and brainstorm ways to use literature to
teach astronomy concepts.
Summary of Activities:
Activity 1
 Divide people into teams of four. Assign each member of the team a number from
one to four.
 Provide each team with a list of information about their culture (i.e., are they farmers?
Hunter gatherers? Civilized?) and what is important to them.
 Provide each team with a page from a star map (stars only) which has been divided
into four sections labeled one through four. Each team will have the same star map!
Ask each person to create a constellation in the section corresponding to their
number. Next, have the team get together and share the constellations, and develop a
story which includes each constellation.
 Have each team share their star story!
 Compare the stories and see if the other teams can identify what is important about
the other “cultures” from their constellations and star stories.
Activity 2
 Prior to workshop, have teachers identify fictional literature containing astronomical
references.
 Facilitate discussions on how to implement the literature into the teaching of
astronomical concepts.
