“Nuovi Mondi” is the first creative contest launched by the elective co-working group CORTE. It combines the professional and the cultural world, maintaining a profile based on the affinity of the audience of both. CORTE is an extended family of experts in different fields that weave their working lives within the same high walls. Founded in Rome in September of 2013, it has already won a place in the increasingly interconnected middle ground that embraces architecture, design, communication, visual arts and cultural services. A collective authorship, combining seemingly distant areas of knowledge and makes them available to integrated projects. It is in the context of this multidisciplinary research that “Nuovi Mondi” fits, an ideal declination and meeting point between visions. CORTE, SALA DEL TORRIONE HOME CORTE CONTEST Il Contest, in numeri: 13 nazionalità, 14 ambiti creativi, 1 evento di lancio, 112 partecipanti, 8 giurati, 10 finalisti, 2 lingue ufficiali, 1 catalogo, 1 mostra. The contest, in numbers : 13 nationalities, 14 creative fields, 1 launch event, 112 participants , 8 jurors , 10 finalists, 2 official languages, 1 catalogue , 1 exhibition. The contest - launched in June 2014 - was attended by artists of different nationalities coming from different creative fields: painting, illustration, design, architecture, graphic design, scenography, animation, digital art, audio-video installations, video art, photography, writing and poetry, technology. They were asked to express their perceptions and interpretations of Nuovi Mondi, meant as new visions, new landscapes, new colours and new materials. Nuovi Mondi are physical and virtual spaces, stratified and multicultural, where borders are crossed and mould-breaking mechanisms of interaction are possible. They are territories to be explored, utopian yet possible spaces. Le opere proposte e selezionate raccontano luoghi illusori o reinterpretano spazi già esistenti, magari evanescenti, o pesanti come legno e ferro. Oppure mappature sottili, e città inestricabili simili a sistemi neuronali. Fotografie sovrascritte, concettuali, delicatissime. The works proposed and selected tell about illusory places or reinterpret existing, although at times evanescent, spaces, or as heavy as wood and iron. Or otherwise, thin mappings and inextricable cities similar to neuronal systems. Overwritten, conceptual, delicate photographs. Or utopian graphics of increased realities, non-existent, other. But the winner it is the impressive mural size and the ephemeral weave of Gardens by the Greek artist Zoi Pappa, who has been unanimously awarded the first place, “ ..for the intrinsic value that these heavenly gardens can offer, another place, a metaphysical, rich of new worlds and able, with its grotesque details, to tell a story, a contemporary and dreamlike reworking of wallpaper.“ PERCORSI - ANDREA FARINA (59,4 X 84,1 CM) Artwork digitale \ Opera non in concorso Digital artwork \ Non-competing artwork GARDENS ZOI PAPPA 1 WINNER GARDENS ZOI PAPPA SCIENCE GARDEN (120 x 207 cm) Pittura su carta da parati, tecnica mista Painting on wallpaper, mixed media GARDENS ZOI PAPPA “Giardini” rappresenta una serie di opere d’arte esistenti e previste (in posti specifici) al quale sto lavorando tenendo presente il concetto di Nuovi Mondi. “Gardens” is a series of existing and future artworks (site specific) that I am working on under the concept of the new worldssome parts of the existThe viewer will hardly distinguish where the painting of the wallpaper ends and where my painting intervention starts. The core of my project is the idea of experimenting in the processes of perception. Nas it seems, nothing is for granted. Worlds of transience where subjects, objects, and territories live states of continuous transformation and facing surprisingly their potential renaissance, creation, evolution, dissolution and disappearance. This juxtaposition highlights the contingent and transient nature of life that structure our daily experience, where a random incident can penetrate anytime and change the flow of things. In certain way these “Gardens” constitutes “other worlds” made up from slices of unexpected which is visually reflected in the selection of the diversity of images. It is a reaction against the prevailing values and stuctures of society. A romantic refusal of that ‘sense of reality’ which strives to invade and control the personal sphere of emotions. Through the use, of a language half-rooted in the sub-conscious imagery of symbols, dreams and myth, and half-rooted in the outer world of impressions, science, nanotechnology, physics, mathematics, architecture, chemistry, biology and anatomy, I attempt to achieve a ‘non-sense’ and an incoherence that leads to the entire exploration of the inner sense and the substance. A poetic transformation of the world into a spiritual world, where everything is combined and related. Human achievements, researches, observations and knowledge that grow and flourish from nature. My desire is to go beyond the values of current morality, to return to innocence and create a world independent of any logic or principle. The selective and individualized point of views will provide stimuli for personal mythologies and diversity of interpretation and meaning. Expressing the sense of Nuovi Mondi through the reinterpretation of a real place cannot be detached from the history of the place itself. Although based on quirky and humorous features, the collage becomes an access key to the spirit that characterizes the entire composition. Indeed, we wanted to analyze an urban area where buildings are not isolated but valued thanks to the combinations among them. This creates a single system in the difficult area of Genoa in which the morphology is clearly defined and evident. The historic downtown area of the city is characterized by three elements that will determine the development of the project and the choice of buildings prototypes associated with them: the cemetery of Staglieno with a wall-buildings system, the uprightness of the Cone of Portman with hill-buildings and the Bisagno river with riverbank-buildings. The history of Genoa and its historic roads allow people also to deal with the issue of the relationship with the historic buildings: in the historic downtown, the system of Walls, Via Garibaldi, the Teatro Carlo Felice, the Church of San Matteo, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Commenda building are identified. They dialogue with new projects and in most cases they are incorporated to them so that the impressive buildings join the new deliberately more futuristic projects, leaving to the pre-existing buildings the task of representing the history. Inside the project, this relationship is brought to an excess done on purpose in order not to consider history as an element of mere study but to underline that it participates in the game of planning. A game where there are no time or styles restrictions, but where all elements together with their total relativity enter inside the new system in which they are involved. (M.Biraghi) A pluralistic vision has enabled our attention to focus on a city snapshot characterized by focal points and icons that impose and still trace the boundary that a city like Genoa must comply. My Maps for a New World born from the topographical analysis of several cities. My intention is neither to break up totally with my previous researches nor to realize new writings on blank canvas. Instead, I rewrite inside the folds of already existing works and so I reverse, amplify and play with them. According to this, I have chosen to focus on the details that inhabit the margins and the interstices of the writing space. My artworks show heterogeneous and dissonant elements that create a slight alteration of my language, together with surprising effects and poetic reactions. I put together different types of materials to create new combinations. I left behind long narration and prevaricating icons. I mend broken and twisted plots. I play with the dialectical opposition between agreement and disagreement, rules and exceptions: light and heavy; seasonal and perennial; fast and slow; precarious and rooted; rough and smooth. TAKE THE WHITE TABLETS FIRST / PERMENIDES OF ELEA FABIO GAUDIO TAKE THE WHITE TABLETS FIRST / PERMENIDES OF ELEA FABIO GAUDIO TAKE WHITE TABLETS FIRST / PERMENIDES OF ELEA (100 x 100 cm) Acrilico, olio and spray su tela Acrylic, oil and spray on canvas TAKE THE WHITE TABLETS FIRST / PERMENIDES OF ELEA FABIO GAUDIO L’idea è di ritornare all’origine. The idea is to return to the origin. All visible and imaginable New Worlds are linked to our sense of “to be”. My idea wants to lead back to “birth” (parturition) as a portal towards the new world and consequently to the following screening of new mental worlds. On the contrary, the idea of representing full packages of anticonceptional pills, suggesting the “nobirth” and “no-being” as the ONLY POSSIBLE NEW WORLD in terms of unknowable, against the projection of false, misleading and simply aesthetic “New World”. The second “aesthetic” and “symbolic” interpretation is inside the shape of the drug package considered as a “portal”: the round shape of the stacked packages is planetary and totemic symbolically. In general, the drug can be represented as a “potion” that leads to healing, to return to normality or to metamorphosis. According to this, the anticonceptional pill is not a real drug but a means a human being has NOT to come to the world, a portal for THE UNIQUE OTHER WORLD. On wood tablet. My project consists in a series of photographs of our world. I like to consider myself as an artist who is totally at the service of an invisible world. Sometimes it seems that this is my mission and I have to accomplish it in every single moment of my life. I have always loved taking photos while walking, breathing and eating! A year ago, my life has changed when I dreamt about drawing directly on my own photos. Thanks to the support of a very special friend and photographer, called TheMonk, I started to daydream with the camera. All my photos started to change and to be something more. Every time I press the button of my camera I know exactly how the photo will appear after the modification I realized with the help of graphic tablet. My project consists in a series of images of the world around us that describe an invisible world beyond the known one. I feel glad when I see emotion in the eyes of people looking at my imaginary illustrations. I like let the people dream and give them the opportunity to participate to my own dreams by moving them away from their reality even for a short moment. The processes running in the different picture planes are also brought in relation by the soundtrack which textually addresses the similarities of the two processes while seemingly originating from the air conditioning as from two speakers. We live in a world that changes constantly. Science is growing and there are countless theories about our Universe. Everything is fascinating and seems to be a part of a great story about space and time. Although there is change, we have to admit that there is a pattern by which the world develops – a set of rules that makes everything happen. Even though in the universal calendar people are just children, mankind has come a long way in the discovery of our history and vision, and leaped towards both a physical and technological evolution. It should be obvious that the next step for mankind would be to realize that we are part of a time period that will prove essential for our survival as a species and concentrate our abilities on discovering various technologies that will help us do that. The theories that are now circulating indicate that for an eternal life, man should unite with technology. Our creative team explored a concept beyond this kind of theories, suggesting a fusion between mankind and the Universe. Our concept involves achieving absolute truth by understanding all the things that are around us. Inspired by both Renaissance paintings and psychedelic art, Cosmomorphia is a series of photomanipulations that represent the concept of becoming one with the Universe, a transcedental state of our evolution. Renaissance paintings have been a source of inspiration for the lighting and composition of the portraits, whereas psychedelic art has offered up a psychonautic concept and the use of the Cosmos’s own imagery as intricate models and patterns. In the creation process we used a digital work environment: painting, photography and photomanipulation. “We are made of star stuff.” and “We are the Universe observing itself”, are two quotes by Carl Sagan that impacted this series profoundly. By using these quotes as a leitmotif for these images, we created an image of Man that is unbound by any laws of time and space, who explores the vastness and immensity of the Universe by searching within as well as through the infinity of space, and we generalized its appearance by eliminating elements that make humans recognizable: hair, ears, nose and mouth, thus making all people equal in the eyes of the Universe. Keloid is the scientific term used in medicine to define a scar while Alchemy is the mysterious and cryptic art of the material sublimation but also the metaphorical transformation of lead into gold. The alchemical keloids are individual-planets made up of antithetical elements fused and shaped (welded and sculpted) in harmonious roundness, where primordial energies evoked by the material meet and collide to form a new etheric single body, a soul full of symbolic meanings and analogies with the inner plane. The warm, soft, natural and vital wood and the cold, hard, industrial and mineral iron are both ancient elements with strong suggestions. They recall us ancestral and unconscious connections transmitted on different frequencies and multiple wavelength perceived by several layers of the Self. The smooth surface of the wood that highlights the unique design of the grain, by analogy with the history, the fate of a life, the shining mass of a vibrant and irregular geometry of iron in analogy with the deep desire and the effort to change are elements that tell the story of the alchemical transformation of each of us. These are the symbol of our conflicting and heterogeneous humanity. KELOIDE ALCHEMICO 021 (15 cm Ø) Legno scolpito e ferro elettrosaldato. Dettaglio Carved wood and electro iron. Jacopo Mandich was born in Rome on March 30th 1979 and he attended the experimental art school “A.Caravillani”. After high school he attended the sculpture course of professor A.Mongelli at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and with him he participated in the symposium “Aesthetic Synergies” and in the competition “Third Millennium” at the Pio Institute Catel. In 2005 he graduated in sculpture cum laude with the professor Lo Bianco with a thesis based on art, recycling and magic edited by the professor Giovanna dalla Chiesa. In 2005 he won the first edition of the competition dedicated to the well-known sculptor Edgardo Manucci in Arcevia and in 2006 he realized a personal exhibition at the Museum “Manucci” in Arcevia curated by the historical art critic Risidori who decided to show that exhibition even in Milan at the Rotary Club. In 2005 he participated in the international collective exhibition “the nomad age” at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Testaccio (Rome) curated by the historical art critic Giovanna dalla Chiesa. In the following years, he worked for the sculptor G. de Santis and intensified the job in his studio in Rome opened since 2003 realizing and participating to personal and collective exhibitions. For years he has worked on sculptures made by recycled materials specializing himself in the manufacture of iron and wood and also experimenting all other materials. He collaborates and participates with groups and individual artists for the creation of shows, events, exhibitions and workshops. His strong passion for the subject, the exaltation of the beauty of nature, the deep bond with the dream world are stitched together into an energy vortex that captured and conquered the viewer. He assembles metal scraps like laces, industrial rags and fragments of typewriters with carved wood obtained by pruning and urban abatements. He shapes sensations and emotions by animating mysterious anthropomorphic creatures and dynamic masses. The freedom of expression is accentuated by the use of “poor” materials from which the sculptor extracts the energy essence and the alchemic power. The stories absorbed and inactive in the “debris” of our civilization are the symbols of his playful and grotesque language. He drags ancestral forces from the past and, with the necessary attention to the eco-friendly contemporary art, he inspires the viewer to play towards freedom. The scenery shows an heterogeneous and anomalous evolution of organic and inorganic components. Organic anomaly spring out from the number and disposition alteration of organs while the inorganic elements anomaly occur with a reversal of fullness and emptiness. The contrasts inherent to the elements of this world are essential. The full spaces become empty ones and vice versa, they turn upside down. Even the perception of gravity is altered. The series can be connected to the capricci architectural compositions of the eighteenth-century painting. It is composed of real elements combined with the use of imagination. The graphic treatment mixes dimensioned strips and arranged them according to precise mathematical and proportional ratios: the same are found in the spiral and living species. In addition to them, there are photographic samples of light trails taken at random during the night journeys by car. The whole seeks a balance between the op-art and hatches of printmaking techniques. It comes from a visual-morphologic association of two spirals. One was drawn for a series of site-specific installation works (concerning the structure of a snail’s shell and its symbolic meanings); the other is the main element of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, designed in 1943 by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built between 1955 and 1959. It seems that a kind of tornado is arising from the museum: a more complicated order is going to overwhelm the existing one. GUGGENHEIM GARAGE (61 x 60,5 cm) Tecnica mista su multistrato. Dettaglio Mixed media on multilayer. He was born in Padova in 1973 and lives in Montegrotto Terme. In 1992 he obtained the diploma in Architecture and Interior Design at the Istituto Statale d’Arte “Pietro Selvatico” in Padova. In the 90s he starts his activities focusing mainly on applied art using traditional techniques such as drawing, painting and aerography in different fields. His path continues with the realizations of scenic design installations, murals and graphic projects, experiences in the world of music and photography. Gradually he begins to explore the possibilities offered by digital techniques. In 2006 he graduated in Architecture at the IUAV in Venice with a curriculum oriented to historical and artistic courses and a thesis in Design. In the professional field, in addition to architectural design, he worked on the manipulation of digital photography and its possible interactions with 3D environments, from a single object to territorial scale models. From this process he generates graphic and multimedia productions and consequently, through the experimentation, mergers between digital output and analog techniques. Usually he works for distinct series of artworks using a design perspective. Each set can have different execution modality, one of the research permanent features is the tendency to hybridization. Interest in visual perception plays a main role in its artworks as well. Currently he is working on several projects for architectural/scenic design installations in public areas.
