SEA FESTIVAL: BARCOLANA YOUNG AND BARCOLANA FUN'S SUP AND RUKKA ARE UP TOMORROW!
Trieste, 30th September 2016 – Today has been a very thrilling day for Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano
(SVBG), which opened the 48th edition of Barcolana with its traditional flag-raising ceremony at 1pm. The
ceremony was also attended by the members of the association, who year after year partake in the event as
volunteers and offer their fundamental help in organising the world's most crowded regatta, an event which
the whole city and all visitors increasingly feel a part of.
"We are proud to be Barcolana today – said Mitja Gialuz in a speech to members – We are proud to be the
heirs to those fellow members who created Barcolana 48 years ago, to be carrying on this tradition, to be
working towards making it ever more beautiful and great. Our efforts and our work keep the maritime
tradition of the Northern Adriatic Sea alive and our passion promotes our territory." Accompanied by the
"Vecia Trieste" marching band, as Barcolana’s tradition has it, the Italian flag, the EU flag and the sailing
club’s pennant were hoisted and will wave over the SVBG office for the next ten days to show the club’s
festive spirit.
Meanwhile, registrations and the instant-win lottery with its exclusive prizes are under way in Barcola.
Besides the complimentary SLAM sailors' bag, which comes with the event’s official polo shirt, poster and
illy’s special-edition coffee jar and cup, some competitors may be lucky enough to win one of the 42
additional prizes put up for the instant-win lottery, which include pedal-assisted EKLETTA bikes, SLAM
windbreakers and NIKON binoculars. By 6pm today, registered competitors were up to 740.
BARCOLANA YOUNG – Everything is set for Barcolana Young to start, the opening regatta of Barcolana's
sea events. Around 260 young sailors of the Optimist class will sail a total of six races in the Gulf of Trieste
on Saturday and Sunday. The traditional regatta organised by SVBG and Fondazione CRTrieste, a long-time
supporter of the event, is going to be raced by all the local sailing clubs and, in addition, by young sailors
from Northern and Central Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The first of the six races held for the Cadet and
Junior sailors will start tomorrow (Saturday) at noon. Under the supervision of the Race Committee, led by
Roberta Righetti, and the Protest Committee, led by Giorgio D'Avanzo, the last race will start by 3.30pm on
Sunday. Then it will be time to celebrate with the prize-giving ceremony held at the race office in Molo IV at
5pm. Additional prizes will be drawn and awarded to the young sailors by Barcolana and SLAM, among
which an Optimist dinghy and sailing equipment. Sailing clubs and coaches too will have the chance to win
windbreakers and outboard motors.
RUKKA! AND SUP – On the Barcolana FUN programme, there are two events scheduled for tomorrow
(Saturday). A SUP (Stand Up Paddle) race will take place at 3pm, with around 80 lovers of this new
discipline which combines paddling and surfboards. The SUP paddlers will start their race from Scala Reale,
paddle through Bacino San Giusto, pass under Ponte di Ponterosso and sprint through the channel Canale
di Ponterosso towards the finish line. At 6pm, the same channel will be the venue of another extraordinary,
picturesque competition in which groups from Trieste and Muggia's carnival parades will also be involved.
Have you ever seen a tug of war that employs paddles and is held on water? Barcolana FUN introduces an
original competition held aboard a gorgeous 13-metre dragon boat. The public will be able to enjoy this
unique event from the banks of the channel near Piazza Sant'Antonio.
!
THE INFOPOINT AND GADGETS – The SVBG InfoPoint opened this afternoon in Piazza Barcolana. This is
where competitors and visitors can find answers to their questions about the festival, receive a free
calendar and shop for this edition's Barcolana gadgets. With exclusive eyewear, watches and travel
journals, Barcolana lasts all year round!
FONDAZIONE CRTrieste AT BARCOLANA – Fondazione CRTrieste is a long-standing supporter of a few
side events held for Barcolana Young, Barcolana in città and Barcolana Production. Their contribution has
been an important addition to the programme of events at sea and on land for a few years now.
EVENING EVENTS – The first day of the Barcolana festival draws to a close with music and cinema.
Starting at 7.30pm in Piazza Ponterosso, singer songwriter Joan Thiele will perform in a live concert
supported by her band "Etna" aboard the Red Bull Tour Bus, a 60s style sleeping bus which folds out into
an actual stage.
There is great excitement around the Trieste debut of "L'ultima spiaggia / The Last Resort", which
premiered in the non-competitive section of the Cannes Film Festival. The film is about "el Pedocin",
Trieste's famous beach resort where a three-metre wall separates men from women.
