SEGUSO VIRO. Transparencies of modernity in the conspiracy of tradition Reading the DNA of a creation signed Seguso Viro leads us to a hundred years of tradition and love for glass which, in the alley ways of Venice, have been passed down from father to son for twenty two generations, from 1397. But it also signifies the discovery that colors and antique virtuosity express the modernity of our time thanks to chromatic evolution and new stylistic figures. With an excellent historical and artistic background, in 1993 Seguso Viro was established. It is the creative dream of Giampaolo Seguso, molded by a personal passion and cultivated by the example of great masters among which his father, Archimede, one of the major figures of the glass making art of the 1900’s. In this dream he was supported, from the beginning, by his sons Gianluca and Pierpaolo. Yet again the family is the fundamental cornerstone around which the economic activity develops, sensitive to ethical principles and in respect of tradition, knowing how to reap the challenge of contemporaniety. Seguso Viro distinguishes itself immediately in the field of Murano production because it is capable of renewing the magic of glass by matching color, technique and design in new ways. Chromatic experiments and technical research become the distinctive elements of all Seguso Viro production, leading it thus to writing new pages of the history of Venetian glass. “We have never given up our research, constantly setting ourselves new targets” underlines Giampaolo Seguso, creative soul of the family enterprise. The result of this constant artistic research is an abacus of forms in glass clothed in precious fabric: vases and bowls in brilliant, effervescent colors or refined textures of delicate decoration. United by the desire to amaze, every object of Seguso Viro encloses a technical virtuoso and therefore an attraction: because what appears to our eyes is a delicate web of canes of glass or a threatening tongue of fire that enwraps the matter, hiding the craftsmanship of extraordinary sensitivity and a mastery of technique that reaches to the boundaries of knowledge. The works of Seguso Viro are projects of vigorous content, ample, meditated. “I mold the glass through emotional dimensions – explains Giampaolo Seguso, speaking of his creations – from one breath an object takes on life that has a voice and a soul, each time different: the magical atmosphere of the sky at sunset in the lines of the collection “Orizzonte” or the principles of life that spring from the textures of the collection “Pangea”. Each object is the result of a conscious choice, never from routine; it is the result of a project with glass, not simply of glass. The objects communicate, they talk to the world and they reflect it in a braid of textures within the form itself. A ray of light, a form of life, volume transforms and becomes a single work of art. It is the aim for uniqueness that leads Seguso Viro to achieving a new and important step in its artistic and entrepreneurial path. The glass of Murano enchants America In 2006 Giampaolo Seguso past the baton to his sons: Pierpaolo became artistic manager; his brother Gianluca, prepared by his experience in the market in the USA, became director of the company with a growth of the Seguso Viro brand thanks to his years in America. The productive excellence of the enterprise on Murano, the capacity of knowing how to recognize the taste and tendencies of the USA, together with the desire to promote Murano overseas in all its authentic and significant facets lead to a rapid and important expansion in the American market and the creation of Seguso Viro USA offices in New York. Experience, quality of workmanship, productive capacity and profound knowledge of the American market: these are the values that Donghia, one of the most prominent American brands specializing in the creation and distribution of furniture, textiles and accessories for the interior, acknowledged in Seguso Viro and which led to a partnership with its companies. Seguso Viro. Art, research, exclusiveness In the artistic growth of Seguso Viro, 2001 represents an important turning point: as of January 1st of that year, in the furnaces, a special production of limited editions began. This is the “101 Limited Edition”: each object is made in only 101 examples, production of the Maestri Seguso, 101 exclusive art works, offspring of an extraordinary creative energy, aimed at adorning refined interiors, creating a link, both unique and absolute, with those who choose to possess them. Each example is certified and authenticated and it is possible to trace its history thanks to its number, represented by a letter which refers to the year and number which countersigns the order of production. Each piece that is part of the 101 Limited Edition represents the intensity of emotions in workmanship which is committed, sophisticated and pursued in every detail. In the furnaces on Murano the dreams, the poems and the voice of that Man who is the center of the artistic universe of Seguso Viro take form. Viro, from Latin “vir” which means “for man”, to be human. For 600 years a history of glass, art and passion. 1397 Antonio, Filux Segusi, is cited as witness in a furnace dispute. XVI Century from this moment the tradition and know-how of the art of glass making is handed down from father to son. 1605 the name of Seguso is written in the Libro d’Oro (the Book of Gold) of Venice as belonging to the art of glass making. 1792 the name of the Seguso family is added to the ‘Osella Muranese’, the famous coin minted by the Doges from 1521 as gift to the noble families of the Serenissima. 1866 Antonio Seguso (1829-1923) unites his name to the rebirth of glass making on Murano which had suffered a setback after the fall of the Republic in 1797. A precious goblet, created for the Compagnia Venezia Murano together with Giovanni Barovier, is shown at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. 1877 the Seguso family becomes associate of the Compagnia Venezia Murano. 1920’s Giovanni, called Nane Patàre (1853-1931) works as Maestro at the Cappelin Venini & C. factory and following that at the Maestri Vetrai Muranesi Cappelin & C., where he gives form to the precious projects of Carlo Scarpa, the artistic director. 1933 the SEGUSO VETRI D’ARTE is founded where Antonio and his sons Archimede, Ernesto, Bruno, Isidoro, and later Angelo, work. 1948 Archimede (1909-1999) – one of the most important figures of XX Century glass making – establishes the VETRERIA ARCHIMEDE SEGUSO. He is joined by his sons Gino and Giampaolo in the 60’s. 1993 Giampaolo (b. 1942), urged by a desire to follow an autonomous artistic path, creates the SEGUSO VIRO. 1993 Gianluca, Pierpaolo and GianAndrea expand the activity and collaborate with prestigious brands. 2008 Seguso Vetri d’Arte, on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary, is once again in the hands of the Seguso family, now busy with recuperating the historical archives and the more significant pieces of its collection. The passion for art has always accompanied the path of the Seguso, one of the oldest and most important dynasties of glass makers of Murano, whose activity, since 1397, is documented. It is from the love of art that the new project in which Seguso Viro and Seguso Vetri d’Arte and one of the most interesting initiatives of partnership between a Museum of international value – the Guggenheim – has fused with a group of selected enterprises who believe profoundly in the project fusion between art and enterprise. 2008 was a particularly important year for Seguso, as it brought back to the family seat the historical factory of SEGUSO VETRI D’ARTE, extraordinary protagonist of 1900 Italian glass; a factory, founded in 1933, which during the 50’s and 60’s elevated its artistic expression to maximum International levels, as witnesses important recognition (amongst which the Compasso d’Oro first edition in 1954) and the numerous works on show in the collections of prestigious Museums such as the Moma of New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, the Glass Kunst Museum of Dusseldorf…. The partnership with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection follows on this emotional process of repossession of an important tassel in the history of the company and represents yet another phase of development towards new paths dedicated to art, the undisputed protagonist of all the Seguso universe. In the near future the company will share with Guggenheim a series of events linked to the Seguso Vetri d’Arte and Seguso Viro brand, well know in the USA market through which the company expresses a particularly strong vocation to experimenting techniques. The initiative, at the moment in phase of project, will be addressed to the lovers of glass and to an international public sensitive to the subject of beauty. The taste, the style and the ability of knowing how to interpret and reflect the aspirations of contemporaniety which distinguish the Seguso name are characteristics in line with the icon of avantgarde as is the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, in which the greatest artists and experimenters of modern art are gathered. In common both geographically and of intention. Above all, a strategic position, which leads both to looking afar: in that tight circle of the Venetian lagoon and at the same time open to all the world, with an international outlook. And then, continuous attention to cultural communication. The importance of forming a group of people and giving life to an innovative and creative idea leads to sharing common values, in which to recognize each other and to communicate. Joining also means sharing space in active and profitable exchange, which enrich and amplify all points of view, opening new horizons for exploration. The Guggenheim Museum and the Seguso family company together are a perfect example of combination of ideas in artistic expression and economic activity, like the two faces of the same coin. A privileged and prestigious position for the Seguso production, entering into and becoming part of a restricted number of enterprises (at the most 24) who can associate their name to a famed museum. For 600 years a history of glass, art and passion.
