Grespania investe sulle grandi lastre Grespania
Grespania invests in the large-format tile segment Grespania investe sulle grandi lastre by Milena Bernardi - [email protected] As part of an investment of around 30 million euros announced at Cersaie 2015, Grespania is due to adopt a complete plant for the production of large ceramic tiles and panels sold under the Coverlam brand name. The plant, entirely commissioned from System and scheduled to come on stream within a few months, will consist of a GEA 2.0 25000 press, a decoration line with a Creadigit system, a kiln, a cutting line, a handling and storage system, and a gluing and packaging system. This latest-generation technology will enable the renowned Spanish ceramic group to produce large-format ceramic tiles and panels in a range of sizes up to 1200x3600 mm and thicknesses from 3 to 10 mm and higher. The plant will have an output of around 7,500 sq.m/day. At the recent Cevisama in Valencia we met Grespania’s chairman, Luis Hernández Sanchis, who outlined the aims of this major investment. CWR: Mr. Hernández, can you confirm that the new plant will start up as early as this spring? LUIS HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: Yes, that’s correct. The new L’annuncio è stato dato durante Cersaie 2015. Luis Hernández Sanchis plant for the production of Coverlam products, the brand name used by Grespania for its large-format tile range, has been installed in a 25,000 square metre facility that we already owned. The fact that only minimal adaptation work was required has speeded up the assembly operations. We’re expecting to start production towards the end of April, but given the product’s unique characteristics and the need to adapt the Coverlam models already on the market to the new line, we expect to become fully operational by late spring. CWR: Grespania has been marketing tiles under the Coverlam brand name for several years. Was the decision to produce these products directly dictated by the strong market response? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: When Grespania began selling Coverlam, there was limited awareness of large-format tiles and panels in Spain and likewise in a number of export markets. They were innovative products, unfamiliar to architects, interior designers and tile fixers. So we decided to organise an intensive five-year training programme consisting of courses and conferences held in Spain marchio Grespania dedicato ai grandi formati - è installato in una struttura esistente di oltre 25.000 mq, di nostra proprietà, che ha richiesto solo minimi adattamenti accelerando i montaggi. Siamo così riusciti a sviluppare un mercato molto promettente e, visto l’importante volume di vendite raggiunto, abbia- Coverlam used as an exterior cladding on a single-family home in Spain Rivestimenti esterni in Coverlam in un’abitazione monofamiliare in Spagna CWR 115/2016 87 interview and abroad. We succeeded in opening up a very promising market, and given the large sales volumes decided to start up direct production - which had in fact been our goal right from the beginning. CWR: In which markets do you sell large-format tiles? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: Grespania exports to many different countries and we aim to sell Coverlam products in these markets too. Initially, large sizes proved most popular in Spain, Central Europe and a few Asian markets. This geographical area is now expanding due to growing awareness of these kinds of products and of their technical advantages and potential new uses and applications. Naturally it is the most innovation-minded professionals (distributors and designers) who are most enthusiastic about a product like this. CWR: Are you looking to expand your operations into new market segments? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: One of the advantages of large sizes is that they are suitable for a host of new applications such as furniture, kitchen countertops and ventilated facades to mention just a few, which means they have strong potential to grow and gain new market shares. We too aim to reach out to these new segments by developing materials in sizes and thicknesses suited to the different applications. CWR: What are the first products you plan to manufacture in the new facility? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: The current Coverlam catalogue already includes a fairly wide range of surfaces in 100x300 cm, 100x100 cm and 100x50 cm sizes with thicknesses of 3.5 and 5.6 mm. During the initial stages of production we will continue to produce these products, but with the addition of 120x360 cm and 120x120 cm sizes. We’ll probably launch a few collections with a thickness of 10 mm while leaving the production of other sizes and larger thicknesses for other applications to a later stage. CWR: The new plant will have a capacity of 7,500 sq.m/day. Will these production volumes be added to your existing output or will you transfer part of your conventional production mo deciso di avviare la produzione diretta, nostro obiettivo fin dall’inizio. Il nuovo stabi- interview to the new line? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: The two types of production will remain separate. The new factory is designed specifically for the production of large-format products so for the time being we prefer to use it exclusively for new ranges of large-format tiles and panels. We’ll continue to produce conventional sizes and thicknesses in Grespania’s two modern production plants, one for floor tiles and the other for monoporosa wall tiles. CWR: What are the characteristics of System technology that best meet your needs? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: Grespania chose System firstly because we believe it’s the best technology for the production of low-thickness large panels, and secondly because the Coverlam products that we have been selling in recent years are already manufactured using this production process. This will simplify the adaptation work needed to produce them on our lines. System technology is more efficient in terms of energy and allows for greater automation. In some respects it is also more flexible, although the production of large sizes requires continual monitoring of production batches and therefore greater organisation. This technology also brings significant environmental benefits in terms of lower consumption of glazes and chemicals and the ease of recycling ceramic waste. CWR: This new project reaffirms Grespania’s focus on innovation. How important is constant technological innovation as a way of standing out from the competition? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: The ceramic industry is accustomed to rapid changes in technology, which means you have to renew production lines if you want to maintain the role of innovators. The importance of innovation has been very clear to us right from the start. We were one of the first companies to adopt rapid single firing with roller kilns, and likewise monoporosa wall tiles and digital decoration for trim pieces and for floor and wall tiles. CWR: What are you doing for the environment? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: Grespania has always done everything possible to reduce its environmental impact and was a pioneer in the recycling of all production process residues with the construction of Spain’s first “zero discharge” plant in the 1980s. We have also adopted a reverse osmosis system for purification of glazing department water and have obtained important environmental certifications. The two modern production plants currently in operation are examples of both cutting-edge technology and care for the environment. CWR: What new products have you presented at Cevisama? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: Many of the products on display here in Valencia were actually first presented at Cersaie 2015. Bellacasa, another of the Group’s brands, has however chosen Cevisama to launch its latest collections. CWR: What were your results for 2015 and what’s your outlook for 2016? L. HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIS: Last year we saw 6% growth in sales and an increase in profits thanks to lower energy costs, stable raw materials prices and positive developments in several European markets and the United States. Due to the start-up of the new Coverlam plant and the growing demand for these new products, we believe we can achieve an even higher turnover growth rate in 2016. 5 90 CWR 115/2016 limento è stato concepito solo per fabbricare grandi lastre e per ora preferiamo dedicarlo interamente allo sviluppo di nuove gamme di grande formato. CWR: Quali novità avete presentato a Cevisama? 5 I.C.F. & WelkoS.p.A.
