Dear IS Modena families,
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL BOOK WEEK & BOOK DAY ON APRIL 23 RD
Book week starts today! A whole week full of interesting events for our students, all dedicated to the world
of books! The importance of celebrating World Book Week & World Book day is for celebrating the wonderful
gift of reading that accompanies us throughout our lives no matter what age.
Action Month continues, don’t miss the updated details by the Student Council in the newsletter.
MYP residential trip parents meeting today at 2pm.
School photos: soon we will be able to circulate to parents the link for viewing and choosing the photos.
Mr. Groppi will be ‘physically’ absent this week due to his ankle injury. He has been regularly planning all the
PE classes and Mr. Kay has been putting them into pratice with our students.
Sports Day: please remember to fill-out the hamburger & hot dog forms for our annual Sports Day taking
place on Friday, April 29 by today. Teams & schedule of the day are being finalized and will be circulated soon
to all our Kindergarten to Grade 11 families.
Fire drill & emergency evacuation: last Wednesday we held our second evacuation and fire drill. The
students gathered into quiet lines and were escorted to their nearest exit and to their already established
safe area away from the school building. The whole school was evacuated in five minutes with a slight
improvement from our previous drill, well done students and staff!
EARLY DISMISSAL THIS FRIDAY AT 1PM: planning afternoon.

CELEBRAZIONI PER LA SETTIMANA INTERNAZIONALE DEL LIBRO & DELLA GIORNATA DEL LIBRO 23 APRILE
La settimana del libro inizia oggi! Un’intera settimana piena di interessanti eventi per i nostri studenti, tutti
dedicati al mondo dei libri! L’importante valore della Settimana Mondiale del Libro e della Giornata Mondiale
del Libro è quello di celebrare il magnifico dono della lettura che ci accompagna durante tutta la ns. vita,
indipendentemente dall’età.
Il Mese dell’Azione continua, non perdetevi il dettagliato aggiornamento da parte del Consiglio Studentesco
nella newsletter.
Gita residenziale delle Medie, oggi alle 14:00 l’incontro per i genitori.
Foto scolastiche: presto condivideremo con i ns. genitori il link per visualizzare e scegliere le foto.
Mr. Groppi sarà «fisicamente» assente anche questa settimana a causa dell’infortunio alla caviglia. Si sta
occupando regolarmente della pianificazione delle lezioni di Educazione Fisica che Mr. Kay mette in pratica
con i ns. studenti.
Giornata dello Sport: ricordatevi di inviare il modulo per la prenotazione degli hamburger & hot dogs per
l’annuale giornata dello sport che si terrà venerdì 29 aprile, entro oggi. Le squadre e il programma della
giornata è in corso di definizione e presto verranno inviate a tutte le famiglie da Kindergarten a Grade 11.
Prove di evacuazione e antincendio: mercoledì scorso è stata effettuata la seconda prova di evacuazione. Gli
studenti si sono allineati ordinatamente e sono stati accompagnati, attraverso le uscite di sicurezza, al punto di
raccolta lontanto dall’edificio scolastico. La scuola è stata evacuata in 5 minuti con un leggero migliormento
rispetto alla precedente prova, ottimo lavoro studenti e staff!

Book Week
from April 18-22
World Book Day April 23
This year, World Book Week will be celebrated from April 18-22.
Several activities have been planned throughout the week for all our
students and we hope it will be another great success!
The events on schedule are:

APRIL 19: BOOK FAIR BY USBORNE from 8.30-16.30. English books on sale. All children will
receive a € 1.50 token to be discounted from a book. All classes will go and visit the book
fair throughout the day, so it would be nice if you could give your children some money to
buy a book they like. The Book fair is open to parents from 15.15 to 16.30.
 APRIL 20: BOOK FAIR BY EMILY BOOKSHOP from 8.30-16.30. Italian (all ages), French,
German and Spanish (Young adults – adults) books on sale. All classes will go and visit the
book fair throughout the day, so it would be nice if you could give your children some
money to spend on books. The Book fair is open to parents from 15.15 to 16.30.
 APRIL 20 - DRESS-UP DAY: students should dress up as a character in a book … and bring
the book with them as an evidence! A € 2 donation is requested that will go towards charity
projects (as part of Action Month organised by Student Council)
 APRIL 21: MYP/DP students will meet Costantino Bertucelli, author of the book 'EVERYDAY
HEROES: STORIE DI SPORT, MOTIVAZIONE E CRESCITA PERSONALE'.
Students will be involved in other activities, such as Spine Label Poetry (Gr 5-12), Book
Review contest (Gr 3-6), Reading buddies (MYP students will read to Early Years and Grade 2
children), Make-your-own Book cover (EY – Gr 2).
We hope our students, staff and parents alike will enjoy this school-wide celebration –
because reading can and should be fun!

Quest’anno, la Settimana Mondiale del libro verrà celebrata dal 18 al 22
aprile. Abbiamo programmato tantissime attività per tutti i nostri studenti
e ci auguriamo sia un altro grande successo!
Gli eventi in calendario sono i seguenti:
 19 APRILE: FIERA DEL LIBRO CON USBORNE dalle 8.30-16.30. Vendita di libri in inglese.
Tutti gli studenti riceveranno un buono da 1.50 euro da scontare dall’acquisto di un libro.
Tutte le classi visiteranno la fiera nel corso della giornata, quindi consigliamo di dare ai
vostri figli un po’ di contanti per acquistare un libro di loro gradimento. La fiera del libro
sarà aperta ai genitori dalle 15.15 alle 16.30.

di un libro e portare con sè il libro stesso a prova della loro scelta! Si richiede una
donazione di 2 € che verrà destinata ai progetti di beneficienza (nell’ambito dell’Action
Month organizzato dal Consiglio studentesco).
 21 APRILE: gli studenti MYP/DP incontreranno Costantino Bertucelli, autore del libro
'EVERYDAY HEROES: STORIE DI SPORT, MOTIVAZIONE E CRESCITA PERSONALE'.
Gli studenti parteciperanno ad altre attività, tra cui ‘Poemi con il dorso dei libri’ (Gr 5-12),
Concorso per la migliore recensione di un libro (Gr 3-6), Compagni di lettura (gli studenti
MYP leggeranno storie ai bambini di Early Years e Gr2) , Realizzazione della copertina di un
libro (EY-Gr2).
Ci auguriamo che queste celebrazioni possano coinvolgere positivamente tutti, studenti,
genitori e staff – perchè la lettura può – anzi deve – essere divertimento!

Action Month - updates
Action Month update: AWARENESS leads to ACTION
After having listened to our guest visitors and found out more about the work of the associations who
came to meet us in school, the Student Council wants to promote action within our school community.
A core value of our school is to be caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful
world through intercultural understanding.
Please, continue to read the information that follows and learn more about who and how we want to help.
On Wednesday 6th of April, Irene from CEFA visited us and presented their initiatives to PYP and MYP. CEFA
the seed of solidarity is a Non-Government Organization, which has been working for 40 years to fight
hunger and poverty.
They work in Africa and South America on agricultural development and educational projects and rely on
volunteers, public and private donations. Our school is supporting their work in a rural area of Guatemala,
where indigenous girls, because of racial and gender discrimination, would not go to school and have hope
for a better future without CEFA’s support. Last year our school has “funded” the scholarships of 4 girls. The
Student Council feels that we have the responsibility to continue providing an education for them.
On Friday 8th of April, Marco, from the association Porta Aperta came and explained what they do to our
PYP students. Since 1978 they ince 1978 they have been working to combat the marginalisation of people
that, for various reasons, end up being lonely and facing problems too big for them. They help homeless
people or people in difficulty. People can sleep in the Porta Aperta headquarters in Modena or receive food
bags on Mondays and Fridays. They also receive medical and legal support. This is a local organization, so, if
you wish, you can easily donate food, clothing or used items directly to them, or simply go and visit them.
Our school is already collaborating with Porta Aperta: this year we’ve already donated clothes to them and
we will soon organize a collection of items. Porta Aperta has given us a beautiful book about them, created
by a journalist and a photographer. The book is now available in our library.
On Friday the 15th, Feraz, one of the founders of the organization Speranza-Hope for Children, visited the
school and explained their initiatives to PYP, MYP and DP. Hope for Children is an association that aims to
provide some hope and tangible support to children who experience desperate humanitarian crises. They are
currently mainly working in Syria, Turkey, Greece and the Balkans, trying to bring a smile to children who
have lost it because they live in a warzone or had to leave their country because of war. In Syria Hope for
children has founded a pediatric clinic in a refugee camp, where the refugees are also provided with clothing
and food. In the area of Aleppo, Syria, they have 5 schools, teaching more than 600 children. This year
we’ve already given them clothes and shoes, but in the future we would like to do more and try to start
supporting their educational projects in Syria, because we believe that war can steal childhood, but with
education there can still be a future.
The first opportunity that we all have to help is “dress up as the character of a book” day, on Wednesday
20th of April. If students want to dress up as a character of a book, they have to donate 2 euros, but even if
they don’t want to dress up, they can still bring their contribution to our causes. If children want to bring
more than 2 euros, they can, but Student Council will start encouraging students to “work” for this money by
doing simple chores or agreements with parents. This gives them the opportunity to understand the meaning
of what they are doing and the value of money, and to show their motivation.

Mese dell’Azione - aggiornamenti
Aggiornamento sull’Action Month: la CONSAPEVOLEZZA porta all’AZIONE
Dopo aver ascoltato ed appreso maggiori informazioni sulle realtà che ci hanno presentato le associazioni
che sono venute a scuola, lo Student Council vuole promuovere l’azione nella nostra comunità scolastica.
Essere giovani persone che si prendono cura degli altri e che contribuiscono a creare un mondo migliore e
dove regna la pace è un valore fondamentale per la nostra scuola. Vi preghiamo di continuare a leggere le
informazioni che seguono per saperne di più su chi vogliamo aiutare e su come vogliamo farlo.
Mercoledì 6 aprile è venuta a trovarci Irene dell’associazione CEFA e ha presentato le loro iniziative agli
studenti del PYP e dell’MYP. CEFA, il seme della solidarietà, è un’organizzazione non governativa, che da 40
anni lavora per combattere la fame e la povertà. Lavorano in America del Sud ed in Africa sullo sviluppo
agricolo e su progetti educativi e sono sostenuti da volontari e da donazioni pubbliche e private. La nostra
scuola sta già sostenendo il loro lavoro in un’area rurale del Guatemala, in cui le bambine indigene, causa
discriminazioni razziali e di genere, non andrebbero a scuola e non avrebbero la speranza di un futuro
migliore senza il supporto di CEFA. L’anno scorso la nostra scuola ha “adottato” le borse di studio di 4
bambine. Lo Student Council sente che abbiamo la responsabilità di continuare a sostenere la loro
educazione.
Venerdì 8 aprile è venuto Marco, dell’associazione PORTA APERTA e ha spiegato il loro lavoro agli studenti
del PYP. Dal 1978 combattono l’emarginazione di persone che, per varie ragioni si trovano in solitudine ad
affrontare problemi troppo grandi per loro. Aiutano persone senza fissa dimora o in difficoltà. Alcune
persone possono dormire nella sede di Porta Aperta, altri ricevono buste della spesa al lunedì e al venerdì.
Possono anche ricevere supporto medico o legale. Questa è un’organizzazione che opera a livello locale,
quindi, se lo desiderate, potete facilmente donare cibo, vestiti o oggetti usati direttamente a loro o,
semplicemente, andare a trovarli. La nostra scuola sta già collaborando con Porta Aperta: quest’anno
abbiamo raccolto vestiti per loro e presto organizzeremo una raccolta di materiali. Porta Aperta ci ha
donato un bellissimo libro sulla loro attività, realizzato da un fotografo e da una giornalista e che è ora
disponibile nella nostra biblioteca.
Venerdì 15 aprile, Feras, uno dei fondatori dell’organizzazione Speranza-Hope for Children, è venuto a
trovarci e ha spiegato il loro lavoro ai PYP e agli MYP. Hope for Children è un’associazione che ha lo scopo di
portare speranza e aiuti concreti a bambini che fanno esperienza di crisi umanitarie disperate. Al momento
sono attivi principalmente in Siria, Turchia, in Grecia e nei Balcani e cercano di portare un sorriso ai bambini
che l’anno perso a causa della guerra o perché hanno dovuto lasciare la loro terra a causa della guerra. In
Siria, Hope for Children ha fondato una clinica pediatrica in un campo profughi, in cui vengono anche
distribuiti cibo, vestiti e coperte. Nell’area di Aleppo, sempre in Siria, hanno 5 scuole, con più di 600
bambini. Quest’anno abbiamo già raccolto vestiti e scarpe per loro, ma, in futuro, vorremmo fare di più, e
tentare di iniziare a sostenere i loro progetti educativi in Siria, perché siamo convinti del fatto che la guerra
può rubare l’infanzia, ma che con l’istruzione possa ancora esserci un futuro.
La prima opportunità di aiuto concreto che abbiamo è mercoledì 20 aprile, in cui i bambini possono vestirsi
come il personaggio di un libro. Se lo fanno, devono portare a scuola 2 euro, ma anche se non desiderano
mascherarsi, possono comunque portare il loro contributo. Se i bambini vogliono portare più di 2 euro,
possono, ma lo Student Council inizierà ad incoraggiarli a “guadagnarsi” questi soldi, con lavoretti o patti con
i genitori. Questo darà loro la possibilità di comprendere meglio cosa stanno facendo ed il valore dei soldi, e
di mostrare la loro motivazione. La priorità di destinazione per i fondi che raccoglieremo è di riuscire a
pagare le 4 borse di studio per le bambine in Guatemala. Se, entro la fine dell’anno, avremo raccolto
abbastanza soldi, potremo anche iniziare a sostenere le scuole in Siria.

Sports Teams
IS Modena vs IS Bologna
On 11th April, our school had the pleasure of hosting a sports exchange with the International School of Bologna.
It was a very intense day for the students with a handball tournament in the morning and a football tournament in
the afternoon. Grade 7 students enjoyed a day in the sun, competing all day outside, whilst Grade 8 and 9
students competed in the main gym.
In the Grade 7 tournament Bologna had 4 teams, 2 boys teams and 2 girls teams whilst Modena had 1 boys’ team
and 1 girls’ team.
ISModena Grade 7 students, boys and girls, did extremely well in both tournaments finishing top of their groups
and reaching the finals, in both handball and football. Unfortunately the Bologna teams, previously defeated,
managed to grab a win with only a goal difference in every game.
In the Grade 8 and 9 tournament, Modena and Bologna had 4 teams each, 2 boys’ teams and 2 girls’ teams.
The handball tournament was once again dominated by Modena with our 4 teams reaching the finals. The 2
Modena girls’ teams finished 1st and 2nd in the group stage and met in the final. Grade 9 girls won the final in a
very close game where Grade 8 girls showed great team spirit.
The 2 Modena boys’ teams also finished 1st and 2nd in the group stage and met in the final with Grade 9 boys
winning the final in, again, a very close game.
After lunch and a quick break, the teams were back competing in the football tournament.
Grade 8 and 9 girls dominated the tournament and reached the final. After an epic draw, the winner had to be
decided with a penalty shootout and Grade 9 girls won 2-1.
The Boys competition was first dominated by the Bologna Boys. After the pool stage, Team Bologna 2 topped the
group and Modena’s Grade 9 boys finished 2nd, thanks to a better goal difference. Both teams met in the final, and
Modena won 1-0 after a lucky own goal conceded by Bologna. Modena’s Grade 9 boys showed good defensive
skills to secure the win and ended the day on a very positive note​.

L'11 aprile la nostra scuola ha avuto il piacere di ospitare un torneo sportivo con l'International School of Bologna.
E' stata una giornata molto intensa per gli studenti impegnati in un torneo di pallamano al mattino e un torneo di
calcio nel pomeriggio. Gli studenti di Grade 7 si sono divertiti all'aria aperta tutto il giorno sotto il sole mentre gli
studenti di Grade 8 e 9 hanno giocato nella palestra principale. Per il torneo di Grade 7 Bologna aveva 2 squadre,
2 maschili e 2 femminili mentre Modena aveva 1 squadra maschile e 1 squadra femminile.
Gli studenti di Grade 7, maschi e femmine, hanno giocato estremamente bene in entrambi i tornei arrivando primi
e arrivando alle finali, sia a pallamano sia a calcio. Sfortunatamente le squadre di Bologna, in precedenza sconfitte,
sono riuscite a vincere solamente con un goal di differenza in tutte le partite.
Nel torneo di Grade 8 e 9, Modena e Bologna avevano entrambe 4 squadre, 2 maschili e 2 femminili.
Modena ha dominato il torneo di pallamano ancora una volta con le nostre 4 squadre che sono riuscite ad arrivare
alle finali. Le 2 squadre di Modena sono arrivate prime e seconde nel loro gruppo ed arrivate in finale. Le ragazze di
Grade 9 hanno vinto la finale con una partita molto combattuta nella quale Grade 8 ha mostrato di avere un
grande spirito sportivo.
Anche le 2 squadre maschili di Modena sono arrivate prime e seconde nel loro gruppo ed arrivate in finale con la
vittoria finale della squadra maschile di Grade 9, ancora una volta giocando una partita molto combattuta.
Dopo pranzo e una pausa veloce, le squadre sono tornate a gareggiare nel torneo di calcio.
Le ragazze di Grade 8 e 9 hanno dominato il torneo e sono arrivate in finale. Dopo un pareggio da urlo, la squadra
vincente ha vinto ai calci di rigore e le ragazze di Grade 9 hanno vinto 2-1.
La partita dei ragazzi è stata inizialmente dominata da Bologna. Dopo la fase dei gironi, il Team Bologna 2 è
arrivato primo nel gruppo e i ragazzi di Grade 9 di Modena sono arrivati secondi, con una migliore differenza
di goal. Entrambe le squadre sono arrivate in finale e Modena ha vinto 1-0 dopo un fortunato autogoal di Bologna.
I ragazzi di Grade 9 di Modena hanno dimostrato buone doti di in difesa assicurandosi la vittoria e hanno concluso
la giornata con una nota molto positiva.

PTA
Events for Summer term 2016
Now that spring is finally on the way, the new term will give us lots of opportunities to get
together. With this in mind, the PTA has put together the following schedule of events.
Please mark all of the dates in your diaries and for those events that you would like to
attend, please contact your Class Representative to confirm your intended participation as
soon as possible.
Friday, April 29- Sports Day and family BBQ
Once again, the PTA will be hosting the annual family BBQ at the end of the sports day
competitions, so make sure you have the date marked in your diary to avoid missing out on
all of the fun. Please return the participation slip sent by the school by Friday, April 15th.
Monday 9 May – Teacher/staff Appreciation Lunch
Our annual way of saying "thank you" to all our teaching and non-teaching staff by giving
them an hour to sit down together and have a relaxed lunch, with food and break time
student supervision provided by parents. All of the relevant details will be published nearer
the time.

Eventi dell’ultimo trimestre 2016
Adesso che finalmente sta arrivando la primavera, il nuovo trimestre ci dara’ molte
opportunita’ per restare insieme. Con questo in mente, il PTA ha organizzato il seguente
calendario di eventi. Per favore segnatevi sul calendario le date degli eventi a cui intendete
aderire e contattate la vostra Rappresentante di Classe per confermare la vostra
partecipazione il prima possibile.
Venerdì 29 Aprile - Sports Day e family BBQ
Ancora una volta, il PTA offrira’ un BBQ dopo lo sports day. Per il momento vi chiediamo di
segnare questa data sul vostro calendario. Per cortesia completata e restituite il modulo per
la partecipazione inviato dalla scuola entro venerdì 15 aprile.
Lunedì 9 Maggio - Pranzo di apprezzamento per gli insegnanti e staff
Ogni anno diciamo “grazie” agli insegnanti concedendo loro un’ora per un pranzo rilassante,
con cibo e supervisione degli studenti offerti dai genitori. Ulteriori dettagli seguiranno in una
comunicazione dedicata a questa iniziativa.

PLEASE ENSURE ALL ITEMS ARE LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME
Except for the very young children, we expect the students to keep track of their own
belongings. Please discuss this with them. If your child arrives home with clothing or
something else that belongs to another student, please return it to school the next day.
A lost property (Lost & Found Box) is located temporarily in the Medical Room, feel free to
check it for missing items and please keep it tidy.

Ad eccezione dei bambini molto piccoli, ci aspettiamo che gli studenti tengano controllati i loro
effetti personali. Discutetene con Vostro figlio. Se Vostro figlio arriva a casa con abbigliamento o
altri oggetti che appartengono ad altri studenti, siete pregati di restituirli a scuola il giorno
seguente.
Gli oggetti smarriti (Scatola degli Oggetti Smarriti) si trova temporaneamente nel locale
infermeria, controllate liberamente e mantenetelo in ordine.
PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal
belongings in the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello.
Ricordatevi di chiudere le portiere dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina.
Il parcheggio interno è riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
