Provisional pole position for Carlos Checa and fourth place for Shakey.
After two intense winter test sessions in Portimao and Valencia, the Althea racing team faces one last
two-day test session in Phillip Island before the season starts. Carlos Checa and Shakey Byrne declared
themselves ready to take their Ducati 1098R into competitive action this weekend. A dry track and good
weather conditions for the first day of official testing in Phillip Island. During morning free practice both
Althea team riders made the best use of their recent testing experiences on this track. Byrne reached
third place (1’33”121) while Checa obtained the fifth position (1’33”218). In afternoon qualifying session,
both riders remained always in the first positions of the time chart. Near the end of the session with a
fantastic lap Carlos Checa scored the provisional pole position (1’32”155). Unfortunately, he crashed a
few minutes later, but he was able to restart with his second bike and end the qualifications. Shakey
also crashed at the end of the session during his last fast lap. It was a vicious crash and he was
immediately transferred to the circuit’s medical center. Fortunately, the doctors did not find any injuries
or damage. The English rider reached fourth place (1’32”635) and the first provisional front row. Final
qualifying and then Superpole qualifying takes place tomorrow, Saturday 26th, before Sunday’s two 22lap Superbike races.

Carlos Checa :”I’m really satisfied with today’s test. I worked very well with my technicians and we
tested some different tires and settings. It’s always a good result for our team to reach the provisional
pole position. Nevertheless, we have to remember that the race will be on Sunday and that probably we’ll
have different weather conditions with colder temperature, but this a very good starting point. I would
like to thank all the people in my team, and particularly the general manager Genesio Bevilacqua who
was able to create such a competitive team. I hope Shakey will be all right tomorrow to fight for a good
result during tomorrow’s qualifications and Superpole”.
Shane Byrne :”I had a big high side during my last fast lap while trying to improve my best lap time. I
landed straight on my back and at the moment I’m experiencing a lot of pain. Hopefully tonight I’ll be
able to rest and feel better tomorrow. I’m disappointed because the feeling with the bike was very good
and without crashing I probably could have bettered my position. Now it’s important that I rest in order
to be ready for tomorrow qualifying session and Superpole”.
Genesio Bevilacqua – General manager :” We are extremely pleased with Checa’s provisional pole
position. He found a good setting that we hope to use also for the race. Tomorrow we’ll probably have
different temperatures, but during our winter test sessions we worked with a lot of different
temperatures, so I’m confident that also tomorrow we’ll be ready to compete for top positions. Shakey
had a bad high side today but I know he’s a fighter, and tomorrow for sure he’ll try his best to contend
for first places”.

Dopo due intense sessioni di prove invernali a Portimao e a Valencia, il team Althea Racing ha disputato
la settimana scorsa due giornate di prove sulla pista di Phillip Island in Australia, prima dell’inizio della
stagione agonistica. Carlos Checa e Shakey Byrne sono quindi pronti a portare in pista le loro Ducati
1098R nella prima prova del mondiale Superbike 2010 che si disputa sul circuito australiano. Pista
asciutta e ottime condizioni climatiche per la prima giornata di qualifiche a Phillip Island. Nelle prove
libere del mattino entrambi i piloti del team hanno fatto tesoro dei loro recenti test su questo tracciato.
Byrne ha ottenuto il terzo posto (1’33”121) mentre Checa ha terminato al quinto (1’33”218). Nelle
qualifiche del pomeriggio entrambi i piloti sono rimasti costantemente nelle prime posizioni. Verso la fine
della sessione, con una fantastica prestazione, Carlos Checa portava a termine il suo giro migliore e si
assicurava la pole position provvisoria (1’32”155). Sfortunatamente Carlos era vittima di una scivolata
che però non gli impediva di ripartire dai box con la sua seconda moto e di portare a termine le
qualifiche. Anche Shakey cadeva proprio mentre stava ultimando il suo ultimo giro. Il pilota inglese
veniva disarcionato dalla sua moto e cadeva pesantemente al suolo. A causa di questa brutta caduta
Byrne veniva trasferito subito all’infermeria del circuito dove però fortunatamente i dottori non
riscontravano alcun danno fisico. Il pilota inglese manteneva comunque il quarto posto della classifica
finale delle qualifiche (1’32”635) e la prima fila provvisoria. Domani si disputeranno il secondo turno di
qualifiche e la Superpole che definiranno la griglia di partenza per le due gare di Domenica che si
disputeranno sulla distanza di 22 giri.

Carlos Checa :”Sono soddisfatto dell’esito dei test odierni. Ho lavorato molto bene con i tecnici della mia
squadra ed abbiamo potuto provare diversi tipi di gomme e diversi assetti. Conquistare la pole position
provvisoria è sempre un ottimo risultato che da morale a tutta la squadra. Ad ogni modo la gara non si
corre oggi, ma domenica, quando probabilmente avremo differenti condizioni climatiche e differenti
temperature. Però quello odierno è un senza dubbio un ottimo punto di partenza. Voglio ringraziare tutti
i ragazzi della mia squadra ed in particolare il General manager Genesio Bevilacqua che è stato in grado
di creare in poco tempo un team così competitivo. Spero che Shakey stia bene e che domani possa
competere al meglio nelle qualifiche e nella Superpole”.
Shane Byrne :”Ho fatto un high side pauroso nel corso del mio ultimo giro, mentre cercavo di migliorare
il mio miglior tempo. Sono caduto proprio sulla schiena ed ora avverto molto dolore. Spero di riuscire a
dormire questa notte in modo da sentirmi meglio domani. Sono dispiaciuto in quanto avevo un gran
feeling con la mia moto e probabilmente se non fossi caduto avrei migliorato la mia posizione. Ora devo
solo cercare di riposarmi per essere al meglio per le qualifiche e la Superpole di domani”.
Genesio Bevilacqua – General Manager :”Siamo molto felici per la pole position provvisoria di Checa.
Ha trovato un buon assetto che speriamo possa utilizzare anche in gara. Probabilmente domain le
condizioni meteo saranno diverse rispetto ad oggi ma nei nostri test invernali abbiamo provato con molte
temperature diverse e quindi e quindi penso che la nostra squadra anche domani possa competere per le
prime posizioni. Shakey è stato vittima di un brutto high side, ma so che lui è un gran combattente e
domani darà il massimo per competere per le posizioni di vertice”.
