The “Site Specific Museums” project 4 This first and pilot side-book revolves around three key-words: Parthenon, David, and the Accademia of Florence; it opens a trilogy that will focus on the Site Specific theme related to museums. Research began in 2005 and was in part rewritten after the publication of “Malaise dans les musées” by Jean Clair [Clair 2007]. That book in particular takes a close look at museums and challenges the idea of cultural marketing, focusing on select wellknown controversial structures such as the global Guggenheims or the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Clair explores complex issues that are usually only taken into consideration from a partial point of view. For ex- ample, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is part of an exclusive real estate investment plan targeting the emerging “Transnational Capitalist Class” [Sklair 2001] and which originated from the post-colonial vision of the world; a vision that the current global crisis is heavily questioning. A decade after Naomi Klein’s “No logo” – the cult-book on the critical science of branding [Klein 2000] – the eternal Italian province can still be defined as a “cultural heritage deposit” [Eco 1988] and is to this day seduced by any old kind of approach belonging to “communication”. It is from this starting point that epic voyages have been undertaken by mayors of small towns in search of stardom, soon “received by the great architect of international standing ready to mark with his unmistakable and personal style a given project in a given city”. Could this be the birth of a new type of pret-à-porter culture fashion victim? Is brand replacing identity? Is it even conceivable that the historical peninsula of the Mediterranean, itself one of the most important heritage sites in the world, is destined to become a pseudo-cultural colony, the cradle of endemic underdevelopment due to a political class rarely in touch with contemporary times? And finally, are the only alternatives to this scenario the widespread land-surveyor designed buildings which over the years have tirelessly contributed to the destruction of the former Grand Tour’s BelPaese (Beautiful Country)? I believe that some thoughts originating from the exhibit “Italics. Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008” [Bonami 2008] on one the hand, and from the essay “Irrazionalpopolare” [Mastrantonio-Bonami 2008] on the other, are essential to me. I consider “Italics” a kind of ingenious premise and I see the Italy of today as an extraordinary tumbledown laboratory riddled by contradictions, appearances and introversion: a country where the audacity to dream, even on a small-medium scale, something that requires systematic networking, clashes daily with fragmentation and localisms. Italy or the “Art of Putting Everything on Hold and Swamping Initiative” is quite reminiscent of the declining phase of the Roman Empire – with some rare exceptions. As an architect, my answer is this work. Years ago I did more or less the same thing by setting up a Young Researchers Project funded by CNR (The National Council of Research, Italy), and radically rewriting it after “Italia s.p.a – l’assalto al patrimonio culturale” [Settis 2002] was published (Italy Ltd. - The assault on cultural heritage). At that time, in order to offer a sort of applied case-study, I chose an archaeological find near Camaiore, a Roman farm which alone did not have what it takes to become a museum, but that by inserting it in a system within the rich cultural context had the potential to become the pivotal point of a complex territorial re-interpretation. The research, founded on substantial sustainability (also from an economic point of view) was published under the title “Paesaggio, archeologia, progetto contemporaneo” [Pirazzoli 2003] (Landscape, archeology and contemporary design), but it was never even taken into consideration by the recipients. The archaeological dig, today, is neither part of a system nor highlighted as an individual find. Happily, that publication - that was already based on a “light” kind of research, which is one of the features of the Site Specific Museum concept that I will later describe – became a methodological reference point for a series of interventions carried out together with Francesco Collotti. A good example of this might be the extremely detailed study that provides the basis to a law promulgated by the Autonomous Province of Trento and pertains to the showcasing of the World War I cultural heritage in museums and landscapes. We applied the same approach to a different project when developing the “Highland’s fortresses system, Region of Trentino Alto Adige”, a reconstruction of the defensive line through laser beams showing military forts as land-art works. As for this trilogy: 1. the theoretical reference frame is the research carried out for the Relevant National Interest Project (Progetto di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale PRIN 2007) entitled “Site-specific museums” www.sismus. org supported by the Ministry of University and Research, in collaboration with colleagues Alessandra Lanciotti (University of Perugia), for the part concerning international law applied to cultural heritage, and Guido Guerzoni, (former ERGA Foundation of the Bocconi University and the Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa), for the part of cultural heritage economics; 1 2. The proposed concept of time will be different: longer spans and less frequency to contrast the frantic communication cycles that surround us. For example this pilot first issue took long enough (four years and many coincidences) and even more time will be necessary to complete the trilogy. Different amounts of time will also be necessary for those who will want to visit the website and see the video and the photos, as compared to people interested only in the “instant-book” which, with rare exceptions, needs little time to write and even less to be consumed. 3. We want to re-think the whole concept of what a book is: an open space, the space of the act of writing and not only of the words already committed to paper. Under this perspective the book aims to be a case-study guide to what is on the website and an instrument to look beyond it. Having been able to hold the Museography and Exhibit Design Course inside the site-specific room – the “Aula Minerva” (Minerva Hall) from where you can now see Michelangelo’s David – containing the “Elgin marbles” plaster casts, I had started readapting it for a university handbook on architectural design [Collotti, Piraz, Volpe 2009]. Then, when I realized the Minerva Hall would have became the origin of the whole Site Specific Museums GO sismus one stampa MIO.indd 7 Una trilogia, oggi? I preferred focusing exclusively on those materials in order to create this pilot side-book, the first part of a trilogy. All of this would have been not possible without the experience matured with the students, to whom I dedicate this publication. It has been equally vital to integrate the direct contributions by Jacopo Sbolci (author of the video), Bruno de Franceschi (author of the video’s soundtrack), Carlo Fei (who comments the workshop through his photos) and Giorgio Verdiani (who carefully documents all of the plaster casts). All embraced this principle of different disciplines intersecting by doing. A trilogy, today? I have little interest in the “coffee table book” or “instant book” genre - forms that can also mysteriously coincide in the beautiful world of art events. I thought of this part of the project as modular one, declined in three sections. The goal is to create a side-book trilogy, specifying the website and opening up new roads. Overall, I know that suggesting a trilogy today – and furthermore an open one – is a long shot. I believe that especially in times of crisis one must be daring in research. As we know, architecture defines its own timeframe which cannot be constrained: just like a novel, which is not a short text message. Per capirlo, abbiamo lavorato con un eccellente caso-studio, il complesso monumentale fio- 8 cultural institutions: the Academy Gallery showcasing Michelangelo’s David and Slaves is a museum which brings in approximately 1.3 million visitors a year, covering a total surface of only 2239 square meters (24100 square feet); the Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture are two key-institutions for artistic and technical education; moreover the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno [Drawing’s Arts Academy] has its exhibition room there. This is the architectural context in which I held the Museography and Exhibit Design Course, straight inside the core Minerva Hall and focusing on its re-design. The breathtaking setting, adorned by rare copies of the Elgin marbles curated by Antonio Canova and some other statues, 8 GO sismus one stampa MIO.indd 8 Note: www.sismus.org rentino di Santa Croce, che unisce in modo fortissimo il carattere di luogo sacro con la fruizione dei tesori storico-artistici. Questo caso-studio si conclude con una riflessione con Daniel Buren che – per la sua rilevantissima ricerca di lungo corso sul museo – abbiamo invita- led me to reconsider the profound nature of the whole space dedicated to education and exhibition at the same time. The re-opening of the internal door connecting the Academy Gallery to the Minerva Hall on the occasion of a relevant contemporary art show by Georg Baselitz, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Robert Morris and Thomas Struth has become an integral factor of the research.. Site Specific Museums_TWO: Sacred Sites & Museums Can sacred sites merge with contemporary museums practice? To further highlight this point we’ve been working on an excellent case-study, the monumental Florentine complex of Santa Croce, which strongly combines both the function of a sacred place and that of a museum. Its masterpieces (by Giotto, Orcagna, Gaddi, Brunelleschi, Vasari, Bronzino, Canova etc.) are visited by nearly one million people a year. Thanks to a collaboration agreement between the Opera di Santa Croce and the University of Florence, new themes have been identified.2 They are issues related to the heavy transformations that have taken place in the architectural spaces of the complex, especially at the exterior, in front of Filippo Brunelleschi’s Cappella Pazzi. The decision to dedicate a master’s workshop to this topic merged with the new edition of the Museography and Exhibit Design Course that I held inside Santa Croce itself, once again by physically occupying the site of the project. Because of his relevant and 6-04-2011 17:40:03 to a gettare lo sguardo dentro gli spazi trasformati del complesso sacro. Curati da due intellettuali di origini europee – Lina Bo Bardi, architetto di straordinario valore, e Pierre “Fatumbi” Verger, fotografo ed etnografo e grande viaggiatore – che scelsero di farsi brasiliani, ecco la “Maison du Brésil” ad Ouidah in Benin e la “Casa do Benin” a Salvador de Bahia (Brasile); rispettivamente punto di partenza e d’arrivo delle navi negriere, long-term research on museums, the case-study SISMUS_TWO closes with a joint reflection with artist Daniel Buren, after we invited him to look into the transformed spaces of the complex. Site Specific Museums_THREE: Elsewhere Museums In 1985 singer Gilberto Gil (later Minister of Culture in Brazilian Lula da Silva’s government) chaired the Gregorio de Mattos Foundation in Salvador Bahia (Brazil). In order to “expressly upset the Eurocentric priorities of the Brazilian artistic-intellectual class”, he asked architect Lina Bo Bardi and anthropologist Pierre “Fatumbi” Verger (both European rooted intellectuals who have become Brazilian by adoption) to collaborate in building two museums GO sismus one stampa MIO.indd 9 sono oggi progetto dimenticato di un modo pre-global. The results are the “Casa do Benin” in Salvador de Bahia and the “Maison du Bresil” project in Ouidah, Benin. The two locations represent respectively the points of departure and arrival of the slave ships, and are a now forgotten comment on a pre-globalized era. The certainly harsh and not so glam issues that these two museum experiments call into play are part of a sustainable and careful re-interpretation of the world and of its relationship with places and uprooting. Moreover Bruce Chatwin’s “The Viceroy of Ouidah” (1980), as well as Werner Herzog’s screenplay “Cobra Verde” (1987) which stemmed form Chatwin’s book – are relevant contributions to this path. A video documen- tary will narrate this peculiar “elsewhere museum” story between Africa and Brasil. The first part of film archive research on Lina and Pierre was edited by myself for the cultural association www.orlandolab.it and produced for the Festival of Creativity, held in Florence in October 2008. The concept, with a couple of small questions As I already mentioned, the theoretical reference frame is the research prepared for the Relevant National Interest Project (Progetto di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale PRIN 2007) entitled “Site-specific museums” supported by the Ministry of University and Research, and conducted with my invaluable colleagues Alessandra Lanciotti and Guido Guerzoni.
