SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (2002-2010)
From a strictly scientific viewpoint, my research has developed on various levels.
The first level, whose project started in the academic year 2000-2001, was based on the themes of form,
image, creation and the perception between touch and sight. Some essays and articles originated in their first
drafts from a further elaboration of these topics, relating with the role of the aesthetically sensitive
representation in cognitive processes. The results of this commitment focused on the aesthetics of tactile and
visual values, upon which the book “Voyeurismo tattile” (2002) is based.
The second level was aimed at analysing the problem of ‘aesthetic categories’. A number of essays were
dedicated to this subject, namely to the categories of ‘limits’, such as those of the ugly, the sublime, the
pathetic and the kitsch. This study resulted in the publication of an essay, “Dal brutto al kitsch” (2003), two
critical anthologies, “Lo spazio melodrammatico” (2004) and “I luoghi del sublime moderno” (2005), one
monography, “Il gonzo sublime. Dal patetico al kitsch” (2005; translated into French in 2010), and a collection
of essays written together with P. Giordanetti, “Rappresentare il brutto”; in particular one monography, “Il
senso del limite” (2009), translated into French (2012) and into English (“How Far Can We Go? Pain, Excess
and the Obscene”, 2012).
The third level takes into main consideration the aesthetics of the eighteenth century. From the collection of
essays “Tatto e passione. Percorso antologico-critico” (2001) to the volume “Animalità. Idee estetiche
sull’anima degli animali” (2003), the research had as its objective the evolution of eighteenth century
aesthetics, including fruition, perception and creation. Still focusing on the eighteenth century context, a
translation into Italian of the essay “Réflexions critiques sur la poésie et sur la peinture” by J.-B. Du Bos, was
published in collaboration with P. Vincenzi, in 2005. A volume of proceedings was then published in 2008: “Il
secolo dei Lumi e l’oscuro”, edited with P. Giordanetti and G. Gori, a collection of papers given at a
Conference of the same name. The theme of the aesthetics of actors in the eighteenth century is examined in
the volume “Corpo e voce della passione. L’estetica attoriale di J.B. Du Bos”, published in 2010. A selection
of extracts from the “Salons” by D. Diderot was translated and published in 2012 (eds. Bertolini, MazzocutMis, Messori, Rozzoni, Vincenzi).
The fourth level deals with the aspect of teaching Aesthetics, which inspired the preparation of a second
textbook entitled “Estetica. Temi e problemi”, 2006 (the first textbook, “Estetica”, was written in collaboration
with E. Franzini in 1996 and its second edition was subsequently published in 2010). Later on it was followed
by “Estetica dello spettacolo e dei media”, written in collaboration with E. Tavani and published in 2012.
The fifth level is meant to analyse the theme of fruition and reception. The subject matter will necessarily be
the role of spectators, from the judgment of taste to any element that is strictly related to feelings. The results
of this research are combined in two collections of essays, both published in 2008: “L’esperienza estetica”
(edited with M. Accornero) and “Estetica della fruizione. Sentimento, giudizio di gusto e piacere estetico”.
