16 artisti emergenti, presentati da 16 gallerie operanti in 6 Paesi Europei, incontrano 16 artisti esordienti, under 35, selezionati in Trentino - Alto Adige su
segnalazione delle istituzioni museali del territorio. Il progetto intende suggerire efficaci intersezioni fra le aree di maggiore vitalità per il settore e quelle
periferiche o di frontiera, nonché supportare da vicino la crescita degli artisti
più giovani e talentuosi, offrendo loro la possibilità di instaurare nuove relazioni
e di confrontarsi con il panorama internazionale.
16 Galerien aus 6 Ländern präsentieren 16 aufstrebende Künstler welche 16 lokalen von regionalen Kunsteinrichtungen vorgeschlagenen Newcomern unter
35 gegenübergestellt werden. Es liegt in der Absicht des Projekts Schnittpunkte und Begegnungen zwischen den Zentren der zeitgenössischen Kunstproduktion und den abseits von den Hauptachsen liegenden Grenzregionen zu
schaffen und konkret die Entwicklung junger Talente zu fördern indem Ihnen
die Möglichkeit gegeben wird sich durch neue Begegnungen mit dem internationalen Panorama zu konfrontieren.

A prize for the future
Scomparsi alla fine degli anni Sessanta, i
premi artistici, sono ricomparsi con grande
slancio negli ultimi dieci anni. C’è stato un
periodo in cui anche i premi della Biennale
Internazionale d’arte di Venezia furono aboliti in nome di un’ideologia che privilegiava
le statistiche più che le individualità. Ma
quale attività è maggiormente centrata sul
soggetto e sulle sue potenzialità, della pratica artistica? Così oggi l’accentuarsi del
felice trend dei premi ad artisti (soprattutto)
giovani o meno, è anche la dimostrazione
di come solo una rigorosa selezione possa
aiutare gli artisti ad emergere. Più merito e
meno sociologia, si potrebbe dire. Inoltre il
valore di un premio è anche quello non solo
di remunerare un’opera d’arte di qualità, ma
di infondere fiducia nell’artista che l’ha creata. In particolare i giovani esordienti non
avendo molte occasioni di conferma del
proprio talento, hanno necessità di venire
“giudicati” dagli esperti, da coloro che fan-

Sogar Preise wie jene der Internationalen
Kunstbiennale Venedig wurden im Namen einer neuen Denkweise, die das Statische dem
Individuellen vorzog, kurzerhand abgeschafft.
Keine andere Tätigkeit aber ist so stark auf
das Subjekt und sein Potenzial ausgerichtete
wie die Kunst, und der Trend zur Auszeichnung großteils junger Künstler zeigt, dass
ausschließlich ein strenges Auswahlverfahren
den Künstlern zum Erfolg verhilft. Die Preise
werden nach Verdienst, nicht aufgrund soziologischer Überlegungen verliehen. Mit einem
Kunstpreis wird nicht nur ein hochwertiges
Werk ausgezeichnet, er soll gleichzeitig dem
Künstler Selbstvertrauen geben: Vor allem
aufstrebenden jungen Künstlern fehlt es an
Bestätigungsmöglichkeiten für ihr Talent.
Ein Kunstpreis ist eine Gelegenheit, die Meinung anerkannter Kunstexperten einzuholen.
Der Preis „The Glocal Rookie of the Year“
steht für die Absicht der Stiftung Südtiroler
Sparkasse, jungen Künstlern auf dem Weg
in die Zukunft eine Anerkennung bezügliche
ihres Talents zu geben. Die Verbindung mit
der auf regionaler Ebene einzigartigen Messe
für zeitgenössische Kunst „kunStart“ schafft
auch, was den wirtschaftlichen Aspekt betrifft, ein geeignetes Sprungbrett für Künstler.
Letzterer Punkt wird oft vernachlässigt, weil
häufig - vielleicht sogar willkürlich - übersehen wird, dass die finanzielle Unterstützung
der Kunst und des Marktes im Allgemeinen
für die Sicherung und Weiterentwicklung des
„Systems Kunst“ unabdingbar sind. Wodurch
zeichnet sich nun der Preis aus, bzw. was hebt
ihn von anderen internationalen Kunstpreisen
ab? Wie der Name schon sagt, handelt es sich
hier um einen Preis für aufstrebende Künstler: Im Englischen steht der Begriff „Rookie“
vor allem für Sportler im ersten Wettkampfjahr, die von den Mannschaften aus Schulen,
Colleges oder High Schools gewählt werden.
Am Ende jeden Jahres wird der Rookie of the
Year, der beste Rookie des Jahres gewählt.
Es ist allerdings das Konzept des „Glocal“
Rookie, das Aufschluss über die Natur des
Preises gibt. Der Begriff „Glocalisation“
wurde zwar schon in den 80er Jahren in Japan
geprägt, wurde aber erst in den 90er Jahren
vom britischen Soziologen Roland Robertson
ins Englische eingeführt und anschließend
von Zygmunt Bauman aufgegriffen. Gloka-

comeback over the last ten years. This was
a period during which even the prizes at the
Venice International Bienniale of art were
abolished in the name of an ideology that
favoured statics over individualities. But
what activity in artistic practice is mainly
centred on the subject and its potentialities?
Thus today we see the emphasis of this happy trend in the awarding of prizes to (above
all) young artists, which is also a demonstration of how only a rigorous selection
process can help artists emerge. More
merit and less sociology, perhaps.
Moreover, the value of a prize is not
just to reward a quality work of art,
but also to instil confidence in the artist who created it. In particular, young
people at the start of their careers who
have difficulty in receiving confirmation
of their talent need to be “judged” by the
experts, those who form an integral part of
what is known as the “the art system”. The
prize for “The Glocal Rookie of the Year”
is a particular example of the desire of one
institution, the Bolzano Sparkasse Foundation, to offer young artists important confirmation on the path they have chosen. At the
same time the link with “kunStart” and thus
with the Bolzano contemporary art fair, the
only one of its kind in the region, has an
auspicious significance, not least in terms of
economic recognition. This is an oftneglected aspect, perhaps on account of a certain
unwillingness to accept that economic support for the arts and the market itself are essential to ensure that the above-mentioned
art system can progress and develop. But

Rookie of the Year” è particolarmente esemplificativo di una volontà istituzionale, della
Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano,
di dare ai giovani artisti delle conferme importanti sulla strada intrapresa. Nello stesso tempo il collegamento con “kunStart”,
quindi con fiera dell’arte contemporanea di
Bolzano e unica in tutta la regione, ha un significato certamente augurale, anche rispetto al riconoscimento economico. Questo è
un aspetto spesso trascurato, forse per una
certa mancanza di volontà ad accorgersi che
il sostegno economico all’arte e il mercato
tout court, sono essenziali affinché il sistema dell’arte sopra citato possa andare avanti
e svilupparsi. Ma quali sono le particolarità
del premio? Quali le sue differenze rispetto
agli altri del panorama internazionale? Si
tratta certamente di un premio agli esor-

dienti, il termine inglese “rookie” viene utilizzato in genere negli sport americani per
indicare i giocatori che militano nelle varie
leghe per il primo anno. In questo ambito i
“rookie” vengono scelti nelle selezioni dei
giocatori per le squadre che hanno diritto
alle scelte, provenienti dalle scuole, college
o high school. Alla fine di ogni anno viene
di solito scelto il Rookie of the Year, ossia
la migliore matricola, in base al giudizio popolare. Ma diventa molto importante anche
il concetto di “glocal” che è stato introdotto
per definire questo premio. Il termine “Glocalisation”, nonostante sia nato negli anni
Ottanta in Giappone, venne importato nella
lingua inglese dal sociologo inglese Roland
Robertson negli anni novanta, ed in seguito
sviluppato da Zygmunt Bauman. Si tratta
di collegare ciò che è locale al globale per
passaggi successivi, passando da un sistema
semplice ad uno sempre più complesso. Chi
vive in provincia, chi vive ai margini del
grande sistema dell’arte ha probabilmente bisogno di una conferma del suo essere
glocal, che vi possono essere
grandi qualità e grandi prospettive future, anche partendo da
ciò che è piccolo e non centrale
rispetto al mercato e ai grandi
centri di potere. Il Premio “The
Glocal Rookie of the Year”
vuole partire proprio dal riconoscimento realistico della realtà bolzanina e di “kunStart” in
particolare come esempio di una
periferia che sa guardare consapevolmente al mondo della globalizzazione, che sa sviluppare
un rapporto equilibrato tra le proprietà e caratteristiche del territorio d’origine e la rete
di scambi mondiale. Per fare questo i giovani artisti under 35 presenti a “kunStart”
con le loro gallerie sono stati rigorosamente
selezionati attraverso una griglia di giudizi
piuttosto articolata. I criteri del bando di
concorso a cui la giuria si è attenuta, hanno
permesso di fornire un giudizio complesso
sulle opere presentate al premio e quindi
la valutazione ne è risultata completa. La
disponibilità delle gallerie e dei giovani
artisti è stata notevole e sicuramente il premio è diventato un punto di richiamo e di
interesse della fiera dell’arte di Bolzano. E
questo nella consapevolezza che cultura e
mercato hanno necessità di sostenersi a vicenda. In generale, l’attenzione verso l’arte
contemporanea da parte della Fondazione
della Cassa di Risparmio continua anche
con questo premio, inserendo un nuovo tassello al sostegno della cultura attuale e dei
giovani artisti. Naturalmente alla prossima
edizione apporteremo i miglioramenti che
l’esperienza ci ha insegnato e speriamo che
il sostegno del pubblico altoatesino aumenti
e aiuti a crescere una manifestazione come
“kunStart”.

und abseits der Kunstzentren und des Marktes lebt, braucht eine Bestätigung der eigenen
Glokalität und der Tatsache, dass auch hier
Glokalisierung, Qualität und große Zukunftsperspektiven möglich sind. „The Glocal Rookie of the Year“ nutzt die Situation in Bozen,
und insbesondere der „kunStart“, als Beispiel
für einen Teil Peripherie mit bewusstem Ausblick auf die Welt der Globalisierung, der ein
ausgeglichenes Verhältnis zwischen den Eigenschaften des Ausgangsgebietes und dem
weltweiten Netz herstellt. Zu diesem Zweck
wurden die an der „kunStart“ vertretenen jungen Künstler unter 35 Jahren und ihre Werke
nach strengen Kriterien ausgewählt, die der
Jury ein komplexes, umfassendes Urteil ermöglichen. Die Hilfsbereitschaft der Galerien
und der Künstler war bemerkenswert, und hat
wohl mit dazu beigetragen, dass der Kunstpreis im Rahmen der Kunstmesse auf großes
Interesse stieß. Mit dem Preis setzt die Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse im Bewusstsein,
dass Kunst und Markt gegenseitig voneinander profitieren, einen weiteren Schritt zur
Unterstützung der zeitgenössischen Kunst
und der jungen Künstler. Bei der nächsten
Ausgabe werden wir aufgrund der gesammelten Erfahrungen einige Verbesserungen
anbringen und hoffen auf die Unterstützung
der Südtiroler Bevölkerung, damit die Initiative „kunStart“ weiter wachsen kann.

what are the characteristics of the prize?
How does it differ from the oth-ers on the
international scene?
It is of course a prize for new entrants, with
the English term “rookie” used in general
in the American sports world to describe
players competing for the first year in the
various leagues. In this context, “rookies”
are selected by those teams entitled to do
so from the players leaving school, college
or high school. At the end of each year the
Rookie of the Year is normally chosen, i.e.
the best performance according to popular
judgement. But the concept of “glocal”,
introduced to describe this prize, is also
becoming very important. The term “glocalisation”, although coined in Japan in
the 1980s, was imported into the English
language by the British sociologist Roland
Robertson in the 1990s, and subsequently
developed by Zygmunt Bauman. It involves
linking the local to the global in successive
phases, going from a simple system to a
more and more complex one. Those living
in the provinces and those who live on the
margins of the vast art system are probably
in need of confirmation of their glocal existence and of the fact that great qualities
and great prospects for the future are open
to them, notwithstanding their small stature
and remoteness from the market and the
major power centres. The underlying idea
of “The Glocal Rookie of the Year” prize
is a realistic acknowledgement of the actual situation of the city of Bolzano, and
“kunStart” in particular, as an example of
a peripheral area that is nevertheless consciously capable of observing the world
of globalisation and able to develop a balanced relationship between the features and
characteristics of its territory of origin and
the global network of exchanges. In order
to achieve this, the young artists (under 35
years of age) exhibiting at “kunStart” have
been rigorously selected using a wide range
of factors. The competition criteria used
by the selection panel permitted an overall
judgement on the works submitted for the
prize and the assessment is thus very comprehensive. There has been a remarkable
degree of availability of both galleries and
young artists, and the prize has assuredly
become a point of reference and interest
for the Bolzano art fair. And this in the full
knowledge that both culture and market
are in need of constant support. In general terms, the attention that the Sparkasse
Foundation pays to contemporary art is also
being continued with this prize, offering an
additional support for contemporary culture
and young artists. Naturally the next edition
will see us making improvements on the
basis of our experience and we hope that
the support of the South Tyrolean public
will increase and assist the growth of such
exhibitions as “kunStart”.

spaccato sulla sempre più vivace e complessa scena artistica giapponese, che successivamente al 1990 (quando
la recessione del Paese portò
alla riduzione delle spese di affitto fino ad allora insostenibili
per artisti e gallerie) è andata
arricchendosi - specialmente a Tokyo - di innumerevoli
spazi espositivi privati e pubblici. Considerando la rapida
affermazione presso fiere e
case d’asta mondiali di artisti e gallerie giapponesi, può
dirsi che il nuovo millennio
abbia segnato una autentica
svolta per il suo mercato, che
registra oggi una continua rivalutazione. Protagonista di
una modernizzazione che fu
bruscamente interrotta dalla
immane tragedia del conflitto
bellico, il Giappone è riuscito
a riprendersi miracolosamente fino a giungere all’apice
dell’economia mondiale. La
sua arte ha seguito fedelmente
questa stessa strada. La pittura esige tradizionalmente una
grande preparazione dell’artista non soltanto dal punto
di vista tecnico ma anche interiore, una meditazione con
l’assimilazione
dell’oggetto
da rappresentare, in un certo
senso il compenetrarsi in ciò
che si sta realizzando al punto tale di pensarlo proprio (per
i giapponesi un’opera non è
completa se non ha il “Ki-in”,
ovvero la “nobiltà interiore”).

den letzen Jahren kontinuierlich
aufgewertet hat. Im Mittelpunkt
eines Modernisierungsprozesses welcher abrupt von den
Kriegsgeschehnissen unterbrochen wurde, hat Japan einen
unglaublich schnellen Aufstieg
an die Spitze der Weltwirtschaft
verzeichnet und auch die Kunstproduktion hat sich parallel zu
anderen Bereichen im gleichen
Ausmaß entwickelt. Im traditionellen japanischen Kunstschaffen zeichnet sich das Kunstwerk

tiefgründige innerliche Verarbeitung von Seiten des Künstlers
aus und ist daher als Resultat
einer Assimilation und gleichzeitigen Reflexion des darzustellenden Inhalts zu verstehen, in
der Subjekt und Objekt sich im

The cultural “discovery” of Japan from the beginning of the
second half of the nineteenth
century has been a source of
renewal for comparing experiences of European artists and
therefore American. In the Orient since nowadays there is an
extraordinary contemporary art
boom in general (Chinese or
also Korean art), it is to remark
that Japan puts itself as direct
interlocutor for the West, in a
system where traditional culture is still an essential background. It is possible to state
that from the ‘50s until nowadays, when the famous Gutai
group was celebrated worldwide, contemporary Japanese
is an integral part of the international art system. There are
to point out as some general
characteristics a big devotion
to radical poetics, a will to affirm a global vision of the world
and an extraordinary executive
accuracy, also when the artists
use media techniques such as
video or photography. The Japanese contribution to the international artistic mainstream
was and is still fundamental.

Oriente ha avuto un’esplosione
straordinaria (basti pensare al
fenomeno cinese o anche alla
Corea), ci accorgiamo come
proprio il Giappone si ponga come diretto interlocutore
dell’Occidente, in un sistema in
cui la cultura tradizionale è un
background imprescindibile. Si
può dire che dagli anni ’50 ad
oggi, dal famoso gruppo Gutai
celebrato in tutto il mondo, il
contemporaneo giapponese fa
parte integrante del sistema
dell’arte. Sono da notare come
caratteristiche generali una
grande vocazione alla radicalità della poetica, una volontà
di affermare una visione del
mondo totale ed una straordinaria accuratezza esecutiva,
anche quando gli artisti usano
tecniche mediali come il video
o la fotografia. Il contributo
giapponese al mainstream artistico internazionale era e resta fondamentale.

generell der Orient einen unvergleichbaren “Ausbruch” der zeitgenössischen Kunst verzeichnet
(so etwa die Entwicklungen in
China und Korea, deren Künstler zu den meistverkauften des
internationalen
Kunstmarkts
gehören) steht gerade Japan
mit einem System in dem die
Tradition noch unwiderruflichen
Hintergrund jeglicher neuen
Produktion ist, als vermittelnde Einheit und kultureller Brückenschlag im Dialog zur westlichen Kunstproduktion. Seit
den fünfziger Jahren und den
weltweit bekannten Kreationen
der Gutai-Gruppe ist die japanische Gegenwartskunst zu einem
wichtigen Bestandteil des globalen Kunstsystems geworden.
Bemerkenswert sind vor allem
die Radikalität der poetischen
Komponente, die Vertretung und
Darstellung eines holistischen
Weltbildes und eine unglaublich
detailgenaue technische Perfektion auch in der Verwendung von
den Medien der Fotografie und
Videokunst. Der japanische Beitrag zum internationalen künstlerischen Mainstream war und
ist weiterhin maßgebend.
