Metrica Sillabica: 1° Strofa 8 10 8 8 8 10 10 12 8 8 sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: The – child – lay – in – the – star – lit – night Safe – in – the – glow – of – his – Do – nald – Duck – light How – strange – to – choose – to – end – a – life How – strange – to – choose – to – kill – a – child Hoo– ver – Blau – punkt – Nis – san – Je – ep Nike – Ad – di – das – La – coste – and– chea – per– brands Ca – dil – lac – Am – trak – ga – so – line – die – sel Our – stan – dard – of – li – ving – could – this – be – a – rea – son That - we - would - choose - to - kill - the - child That - we - would - choose - to - kill - the – child 2° Strofa 9 11 9 11 9 11 11 9 8 8 sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: Al – lah – Je – ho – vah – Bud – dah – and – Christ Con – fu – cius – and – Ka – li – and – reds – beans – and – rice Gou – jons – of – sole – ris – de – veau – ham – hocks Lox – ba – gels – and – bones – and – com – mand – ments – in – stone The – Bi – ble – Ko – ran – Shin – to – Is – lam Pro – sciut – to, ri – sot – to, fe – la – fel – and – ham Is – it – dog – ma – dough – nuts – ri – di – cu – le – faith Fear – of – the – dark – sha – me – or – dis – grace That - we - would - choose - to - kill - the - child That - we - would - choose - to - kill - the – child 3°Strofa: 12 11 13 12 11 11 11 11 8 8 sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: It's – cold – in – the – de – sert – and – the – space – is – too – big The – rope – is – too – short – and – the – walls – are – too – thick I – will – show – you – no – weak – ness – I – will – mock – you – in – song Be – rate – and – de – ride – you – be – lit – tle – and – chide – you Beat – you – with – sti – cks – and – bull – doze – your – home You – can – watch – my – trium – phant – pro – ces – sion – to – Rome Best – seat – in – the – hou – se – up – there – on – the – cross Is – it – an – ger – or – en – vy – pro – fit – or – loss That - we - would - choose - to - kill - the - child That - we - would - choose - to - kill - the – child Ultima strofa: 9 11 9 9 11 sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: sillabe: Take – this – child – and – hold – him – clo – se – ly Keep – him – safe – from – the – ho – ly – reign – of – ter – ror Take – this – child – to – the – mo – ral – high – ground Where – he – can – look – down – on – the – bi – gots And – bu – ly – boys - slug – ging – it – out – in – the – yard Il discorso sulla metrica del brano è un po’ particolare, poiché nella lingua inglese per convenzione si basa sugli accenti di ogni verso, mentre in Italia è solitamente scandita da sillabe. Rima: La prima strofa è la più regolare delle tre in fatto di rima: The child lay in the starlit night Safe in the glow of his Donald Duck light How strange to choose to end a life How strange to choose to kill a child Hoover, Blaupunkt, Nissan Jeep Nike, Addidas, Lacoste and cheaper brands Cadillac, Amtrak, gasoline, diesel Our standard of living, could this be a reason That we would choose to kill the child That we would choose to kill the child Ovvero due gruppi di quattro rime continuate più una rima baciata (A, A, A, A, B, B, B, B, A, A) ad eccezione della parola “brands” inserita puramente per motivi ritmici e di varietà di suono. Allah, Jehovah, Buddah and Christ Confucius and Kali and reds, beans and rice Goujons of sole, ris de veau, ham hocks Lox bagels and bones and commandments in stone The Bible, Koran, Shinto, Islam Prosciutto, risotto, falafel and ham Is it dogma, doughnuts, ridicule faith Fear of the dark, or shame or disgrace That we would choose to kill the child That we would choose to kill the child It's cold in the desert And the space is too big The rope is too short And the walls are too thick I will show you no weakness I will mock you in song Berate and deride you belittle and chide you Beat you with sticks and bulldoze your home You can watch my triumphant procession to Rome Best seat in the house up there on the cross Is it anger or envy, profit or loss That we would choose to kill the child That we would choose to kill the child Le seconda e la terza strofa sono praticamente identiche in fatto di rime: sono basate infatti su quella che in italiano potrebbe esser definita rima baciata. Unica eccezione i versi 3 e 4 di ognuno dei due gruppi, che evitano la rima come contrasto alla prima strofa (dove i versi 3 e 4 sono praticamente coincidenti) Take this child and hold him closely Keep him safe from the holy reign of terror Take this child to the moral high ground Where he can look down on the bigots And bully boys slugging it out in the yard L’ultima parte del brano è senza rima, espediente rilevante per enfatizzare un passaggio importante – quello della morale del brano. How strange to choose to end a life How strange to choose to kill a child Tramite questa anafora (ripetizione iniziale di uno stessa frase) Waters introduce lo spettro dell’irrazionalità, cui segue una risposta provvisoria: Hoover, Blaupunkt, Nissan Jeep Nike, Addidas, Lacoste and cheaper brands Cadillac, Amtrak, gasoline, diesel Con questo processo di accumulazione di sostantivi Waters ci da un primo aspetto della risposta alla domanda appena fatta, fino a concludere con una prolessi (ovvero una risposta a posteriori, dopo aver esaminato i fatti) Our standard of living, could this be a reason That we would choose to kill the child Il nostro standard di vita – lo spettro del consumismo sconsiderato. Seconda strofa: Allah, Jehovah, Buddah, Christ Confucius and Kali and reds, beans and rice Goujons of sole, ris de veau, ham hocks Lox bagels and bones and commandments in stone The Bible, Koran, Shinto, Islam Prosciutto, risotto, falafel and ham Con un cambio di direzione Waters si sofferma su un’accostamento strano: cibi e religione. Waters mettte il punto sulle diversità di culture e ci ripropone il suo dubbio Is it dogma, doughnuts, ridicule faith Fear of the dark, or shame or disgrace That we would choose to kill the child That we would choose to kill the child Potrebbe essere questa diversità di cultura a portare la morte del bambino? 3° Strofa La strofa comincia con una situazione di disagio: It's cold in the desert And the space is too big The rope is too short And the walls are too thick E’ il malessere persistente della divisione realizzata da muri spessi e senza via di fuga. I will show you no weakness I will mock you in song Berate and deride you Belittle and chide you Beat you with sticks And bulldoze your home Waters fa coraggio a se stesso, tramite un crescendo di propositi sempre più devastanti (iperbole), e promette di non risparmiare nessuno nel criticare chi ha realizzato tali muri. Chi? You can watch my triumphant procession to Rome Best seat in the house up there on the cross Chi guida questa marcia su Roma è lo spettro del fascismo (già presente in The Wall), il cui capo è qualcuno che ora come ora è nella casa con il posto migliore… Is it anger or envy, profit or loss That we would choose to kill the child That we would choose to kill the child Con questo quesito il brano sembrerebbe concluso e torna perfettamente al punto di partenza: siamo sicuri che l’atto di guerra perpetrato sia dovuto solo a scopi religiosi? Ultima strofa: Take this child and hold him closely Keep him safe from the holy reign of terror Take this child to the moral high ground Where he can look down on the bigots and bully boys Slugging it out in the yard Alla luce di tutto ciò quest’ultima strofa appare diretta e funge da monito: l’unica salvezza è portare il bambino in un luogo sicuro dal “sacro regno del terrore” (azzeccatissima metafora del terrorismo religioso), un luogo dove la diversità di cultura possa portare un’alta morale. That we would CHOOSE to kill the child STEFANO “REG” ZANCA www.pinkfloyd.lacortedeimiracoli.com
