SwissStop bicycle brake pads are a product of
Rex Articoli Tecnici SA of Mendrisio, Switzerland.
Founded in 1935, the company started to develop
and manufacture bicycle brake pads in the 1950s,
becoming the orginal equipment supplier for several
of the leading brake manufacturers of that time. By
the 1970s annual production reached over 20 million
pieces per year. SwissStop was created in the 1990s
and with this brand Rex continues its decades long
tradition of research, development and production in
the bicycle brake pad industry. Rex Articoli Tecnici also
produces a wide range of technical items of rubber,
thermoplastics and elastic materials.

Prestazioni equilibrate
Il termine di paragone è la frenata con pattini SwissStop “Original black” su cerchi in lega
di alluminio. La migliore frenata (ma su questo
si potrebbe discutere), a detta del mercato e,
quindi, degli utilizzatori. Bene, il nuovo pattino
SwissStop Black prince, in base ai dati dichiarati
dall’azienda stessa, vanta prestazioni molto simili per modulazione dei tempi di arresto.
I dettagli: le prestazioni sono più lineari, in pratica i pattini difficilmente giungono al bloccaggio completo. Il controllo “fine” è migliorato. La
forza di frenata si incrementa continuamente in
base alle sollecitazioni e, infine, è stato spostato
il limite massimo di frenata. In pratica il bloccag-
gio. Collegata in qualche modo ad alcune delle
qualità sopraccitate è la temperatura di “lavoro”, che si è abbassata sensibilmente rispetto
a quella degli “Yellow king”, i pattini gialli. I
Black prince, infatti, con la bicicletta lanciata a
circa 60 km/h raggiungono la temperatura di
171° C a differenza dei 303°C che sviluppano
gli Yellow king.
Tale differenza si traduce anche in sicurezza: un
pattino “freddo” ha maggiori margini di lavoro,
non rovina i cerchi in fibra di carbonio (comunque li usura di meno), ed è più sicuro.
Col bagnato sono miglioratissimi
Ultimo, ma non per importanza, il discorso legato alla frenata su cerchi bagnati, forse il limite
maggiori di questo tipo di sistemi frenanti.
Ebbene, i pattini Black prince hanno prodotto
risultati estremamente confortanti in termini di
riduzione degli spazi di arresto.
Con la bicicletta lanciata a una velocità di circa
60 km/h un pattino “normale” può arrestare
la bici in 133 metri, Yellow king in 121 metri
mentre Black prince fa scendere il valore a soli
90 metri.
