Food 24 B A A-Un Posto a Milano B-Vietnam Mon Amour C-Eataly La Taverna Moriggi is older than the road it’s built on as demonstrated by the fact that when it was registered all those years ago, the Milan City Hall misspelled its name with just one g. Located in a 17th building that somehow escaped the bombings of the Second World War and is now a national monument, this is one of the city’s most authentic eateries. You’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time when you see the checked tablecloths, the chalkboard menu and wonderful old walls. The classic Milan dishes such as Risotto alla Milanese con Ossobucco are not to be missed. There’s also an excellent wine list as Taverna Moriggi was a wine bar before it was a restaurant. Passate dallo zio in dialetto ligure “U Barba”, vi piacerà. An old bocce club that’s been converted to a restaurant by two Ligurians. Casual but with a cool, clean aesthetic: one large wooden refectory-style table in the main dining room makes for a convivial atmosphere and the food is authentic Ligurian fare including farinata (chickpea pancakes), focaccia with cheese, pansoti with walnut sauce, and rabbit Ligurian-style. The bocce also feels very inviting on warm summer evenings. A real retro vibe. Try U Barba – you’ll like it. The first thing in this restaurant’s favour is its location: it’s right in the courtyard of the Cascina Cuccagna, a fine example of rural architecture right in the heart of Milan. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric, unique place, reminiscent of another era. Restored at last, it has become a green focal point and the restaurant reflects that ethic to the full. Chef Nicola Cavallaro sources his ingredients as locally and directly as possible, and cooks all the great regional classics. Go there any time, including for aperitifs. A delightful little garden adorned with old photographs of the Vietnamese owner’s family. The latter and her Italian husband now manage this excellent little corner of the Orient in Milan. The very best of Vietnamese cuisine and an atmosphere that’ll whisk you off to more exotic climes and times. After taking the world by storm, Eataly has finally come to Milan. You’ll find the very best of Italian food and drink here in a host of areas devoted to everything from meat to pasta, wines and beers. And you can sample a little of everything you fancy at the various stands too.
