8 prefazione . preface Open Your City is the guiding theme for the Share Festival 2012. A theme that contains three key, simple and direct words, the pillars on which this year’s festival programme will be built. ‘Open Your City’ will also provide the blueprint for this year’s Share Prize. Open is meant in the sense of being in the making, of being unfinished, experimental, transparent and boundless. ‘Open’ gives the idea of a starting point, the perspective from which we see things, an inclusive vision founded on digital communication and active democracy. It is a hallmark of the quality of an idea, a system, a group or an organization. It relinquishes copyright to give precedence to the sharing of knowledge, to open-source methodologies. Your is meant as the direct participation of people who possess, own, use, occupy and command something that belongs to them. It identifies the person who plays a leading role in driving change-someone who takes action, steps in and gets involved; someone who makes plans, collaborates, transforms, brings together and acts as part of a community. ‘Your’ means grass-roots democracy. City is meant as the venue or theatre of action; it is the common good, the backdrop to changes underway. An urban space abuzz with social and technological ferment, made up of streets and roads, squares and parks and everyday locations. The city has become populated with new sites of social media where communication flows thick and fast-in the form of control, through video surveillance or the mapping of social graphs, though also in the form of participatory democracy, through augmented reality, smart architectures and wearable computing. What is the role of art today, in this time of social transformation towards the city of the future? Is this the city that we want, that we imagine, that we wish for? What’s your idea of the open city? What world we want to live? The underlying message that we want to convey is that the challenge of the Smart City for society as a whole, in all its social, economic and political dimensions, is by no means technological, but rather a cultural and creative one. The eighth Piemonte Share Festival, hosted again this year by the Piedmont Region in the halls of the Regional Museum of Natural Science of Turin, is a fixture of leading importance for art and cultural scenes tied to new media and digital technologies, pursuing a mission of questioning technology. This year’s theme, summed up in the three words of the title “Open Your City”, is particularly timely, expressing a will to investigate—through art—the relationship between urban space and new social and media spaces. As in previous years, an important part of the festival consists of the large interactive exhibition of the artworks shortlisted for the Share Prize 2012, the award designed and instituted to discover, promote and support the digital arts. The international competition is in fact open to artists who use digital technologies as a language for artistic expression, in any manner or form. The Piedmont Region and the Regional Museum of Natural Science have thus chosen, with the Piemonte Share Festival, to confirm their important role in encouraging the spread of scientific culture through artistic experimentation and digital languages. As part of Contemporary Art Torino Piemonte, the special autumn programme of international events proudly hosted by the City of Turin, the “Piemonte Share Festival” is once again taking centre stage as Italy’s leading digital arts festival. Focused this year on the theme “Open Your City”, this 8th Share Festival will be exploring contemporary technology and its impact on the changing scenarios of the contemporary city, through conferences, panels, workshops and exhibitions. Once again this year, thanks to authoritative events such as the “Piemonte Share Festival,” the city has established itself as a leading light on the international scene, a Petri dish of contemporaneity, and a training ground for the future. Architecture and art: a never stopped dialogue to understand the city, its transformations and its desires. Streets, squares, buildings are places of contamination now carried by a network in which we like to be. The Torino Chamber of Commerce, with over 237,000 member companies, is a bastion of support for business, through its administrative functions, business services and role in implementing market regulations. Its focus on promoting the local economy and supporting initiatives of general interest led the Torino Chamber of Commerce to become a sponsor of the Piemonte Share Festival for the first time in 2006, and it has proudly been so ever since. As part of its commitment to the festival, the Chamber of Commerce also promotes Action Sharing, a platform for bringing together art and business. The Share Festival’s rich programme of events promotes new forms of expression and innovation in art, in the online world, in design and in mechatronics. These are all sectors that in Torino and Piemonte find fertile ground for growth; here 1.8% of GDP is invested in research and development, and we are the second-biggest region in Italy by private-sector R&D expenditure. To promote awareness of our local excellence and encourage innovative fields to grow, the Torino Chamber of Commerce organizes special industry projects such as ThinkUp, for the ICT sector, and IntoMech, for mechatronics enterprises. This year’s festival theme, Open your City, connects closely to one particular objective to which the Chamber of Commerce, as a public institution, has been strongly committed in recent years: greater transparency, openness and engagement with business and the community. Fondazione CRT for Piemonte Share Festival 2012 Fondazione CRT is once again a proud sponsor of the Piemonte Share Festival, now in its eighth season. Focused this year on the theme “Open Your City,” the festival brings together two worlds that have always been dear to the foundation: art and technology. Diverse though complementary, they are of equal importance for the progress and socio-cultural development of our local territory here in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley. Since its establishment, Fondazione CRT has dedicated a significant part of its funds to art, with over €386 million, out of a total of €1.5 billion, channelled between 1992 and 2011 into leading initiatives in the sector for the development of artistic projects and venture philanthropy, focused on sustainability and social investment. To ensure its ongoing and specific support for modern art, in 2000 Fondazione CRT created the CRT Foundation for Modern and Contemporary Art, a specialist body vested with an institutional role within the foundation, and the mission of developing and promoting the cultural and artistic heritage of Turin and the Piedmont region. An important part of the foundation’s activities is also focused on technology. Since 1992, Fondazione CRT has invested €363 million in research and education, two sectors that foster and fuel the study and discovery of innovation and which are fundamental for nurturing the human capital of tomorrow’s citizens. The very different projects promoted by the foundation to foster young talent include the Diderot, Master dei Talenti, Lagrange, Reading Economics, and Talenti per l’impresa initiatives. It was established in 1991 by the Cassa di Risparmio di Torino, whose legacy lies not only in the foundation’s name, but also in its social mission. istituzioni . institutions 13 14 Share Prize 2012 OPEN YOUR CITY Le parole OPEN YOUR CITY sono la traccia tematica che ha guidato la mostra di Share Prize. The words OPEN YOUR CITY have provided the thematic template for this year’s Share Prize exhibition. The objective of the prize is to promote and support the arts in the digital age. The selection of finalist works aims to showcase those artists who use innovation as a language for artistic expression, in all shapes and forms. This year the Share Prize attracted 290 entries from 22 different countries. Artists have been short-listed by an international jury, consisting of Simona Lodi, Carlo Ratti, Bruce Sterling and Mirjam Struppek, on the basis of the artistic value of their work and its relevance to the Share Prize theme. Jury Statement What is the role of art today, in this moment of social transition towards the city of the future? It was from this perspective that the artists interpreted the theme Open Your City, exploring the key concepts word by word. The short-list of the Jury reflects the reappearing artistic interpretation of the modern urban landscape as system, where the solid element is replaced by the message, the information and the database, a real, but dematerialized city. Capacities: Life In The Emergent City by British artist Stanza is an installation dedicated to the complexity of life in an environment. Changes in each of the spaces are monitored in real time, as they give rise to constant tensions, highlighting the behaviour of complex systems and the emergent properties that appear. In this case the organism is the city and not the single individual; it is the entire urban habitat as a whole, revealing its nature 16 share prize as a multifaceted system. The installation is the real-time mirror image of everything that changes, gathering huge amounts of data that are transformed aesthetically into a physical copy of the city, made up of cables, lights and sensors that represent shifts in environmental parameters measured numerically. The obsessive focus is on the observation of environmental data by gathering measurement on temperature, light, atmospheric pressure, noise and the sounds of the city outside the museum. Gathering digital data on the environment has become an art, and art has become a data set rather than a collection of molecules. The short-list of the Jury reflects the reappearing artistic interpretation of the modern urban landscape as system, where the solid element is replaced by the message, the information and the database, a real, but dematerialized city. For Mark Shepard, the future for city dwellers is so dystopian that we will need a Survival Kit to defend ourselves against what will have become the Sentient City—a city capable of perception by the senses of sight, hearing and touch, that creates a world under control. He chooses the totalitarian political fiction of a world governed by corporations to present the Smart City as a data-sensitive agglomerate. As protection we will wear sensor-laden underwear, our networks will be hidden in travel mugs, and we will shield ourselves from surveillance cameras by using infrared umbrellas. In short, life in the panoptic city will be one of counter-espionage. In contrast, Jonathan Baldwin sees the city as one big collective game. Using wireless mesh networks, he transforms neighbourhoods into Kenyan-style Ushahidi networks, featuring the pop graphics of “The Sims” video game. TidePools blends crowdsourcing and social activism, drawing the participation of people faced with the same problems and boosting the benefits of living in a neighbourhood. Through what might be called “activist mapping,” he creates a participation tool for the people. Nobody will ever be alone again in dealing with a problem, and solutions will be found by sharing them with the local community and managing them autonomously. On Journalism #2 Typewriter is an analogue machine that is activated by a computercontrolled mechanism. Created by Julian Koschwitz, the work combines both a collaborative and a combinational aspect. Written endlessly on an endless piece of paper, the work brings together the stories of all the journalists killed around the world since 1992. The generation, recombination and artistic visualization of the tragic data is guided by web search concerning the person and data provided by the Committee to Protect Journalists, creating an infinite news ream—tomorrow’s newspaper. Can an interactive sculpture represent a map that interacts with web- sms- and social network-sourced data? SYN is a map of human relations filtered by new media. Mariano Leotta questions the representativeness of these filters, with respect to the real world beyond the web. Are we essentially synapses enabling nerve impulses synced to data packets to be transmitted from one cell to another of a media body? Completing the Share Prize short-list an activist work from the Berlin-based collective VR/Urban Reclaim the Screens gives us an interaction tool to create our own data and information—an SMSlingshot to reappropriate urban spaces. The work consists of a mobile device inserted into a wooden slingshot. People can fling short text messages onto walls and facades to militantly reclaim the city, empowered by the interactive gestures of keying a message, taking aim with a laser and shooting a colourful splash of light. share prize 17 Stanza (UK) Capacities: Real Time Complex - Connected Cities, 2010 vincitore share prize . winner share prize Capacities va oltre la semplice interazione dell’utente singolo per monitorare e rilevare tutta la città e per rappresentare la complessità di una città in tempo reale come un sistema in perpetua mutazione. Capacities goes beyond simple single user interaction to monitor and survey in real time the whole city and entirely represent the complexities of the real time space as a shifting morphing and complex system. What you see is a sculpture representing the emergent properties where sensor network is situated; in this case the city of London. The artwork gathers data from the city via a custom made wireless sensor network. The moving objects, fans, changing lights, motors, noises, that you encounter in the museum are all responding to changes in temperature, light, pressure, noise, and the sound of the city of London . The work becomes a manipulation of data, that powers all the events, actions and processes in the installation. The Sentient City Survival Kit probes the social, cultural and political implications of ubiquitous computing for urban environments. The project consists of a collection of artefacts for survival in the near-future sentient city. As computing leaves the desktop and spills out onto the sidewalks, streets and public spaces of the city. Imbued with the capacity to remember, correlate and anticipate, this sentient city is envisioned as being capable of reflexively monitoring our behaviour within it and becoming an active agent in the organization of our daily lives. Working with the Red Hook Initiative and OTI at New America Foundation, TidePools is tailoring a re-skinnable collaborative mobile mapping platform for gathering and sharing hyper-local information and culture through expressive, community maps and data feeds. Inspired by local artwork, the TidePools interface has organically evolved over months of community meetings, brainstorming sessions and feedback with residents. For example bus alerts were motivated by the notoriously late B61 bus, the only transportation in the area, which led to integration with MTA Real Bus Time data. SYN significa “insieme” in greco antico. The exponential amounts of data available allow us to experience analytical processes that are based not so much on preconceived theories and models but on the observation of evolving information flows (the so-called “emergent” properties of systems). This paradigm shift in interpretation can generate new patterns of action and participatory policy-making processes, but to exploit its potential, the data must be made available and shared. It is only by sharing that we can deconstruct the processes and engage society, the individual, associations, and companies, so as to multiply intelligence and conceive new models of public management. The privileged venues for the production of these huge data streams are the urban centers that are turning into information hubs and becoming “smarter,” or at least potentially so. But real “smart cities” have to be transparent, open and participatory, not “glass cities” in which everything and everyone is observed by the public controller. Thanks to digital technologies and active participation processes, cities can become a tool at the service of the community, a tool of freedom (and not control). TRIBUTE TO ALAN TURING Alan Turing. Gli strani oceani del pensiero. Alan Turing. Strange Oceans of Thought. To celebrate the centenary of Alan Turing’s birth, Share Festival is featuring a special cameo by science-fiction writer Bruce Sterling. His keynote address explores a hypothetical fiction to present the great mathematician in a new light. Both a mathematician and logician, Alan Turing was a founding father of computer science and a wartime hero. But Alan Turing was also homosexual. Under pressure from police questioning, he confessed what at his time was a crime and was sentenced to punishment by chemical castration. A few months later, at the age of 41, he committed suicide. Bruce Sterling takes this story and complicates it even further to explore how a wartime hero, whose work contributed to breaking the Nazi’s legendary Enigma code, was annihilated by the very nation he had helped save. In his fictitious version of events, Alan Turing is German, the deciphered code belongs to the British, and to end the war the Americans drop the A-bomb on Europe. Plunging into the strange oceans of Alan Turing’s thought leads Bruce Sterling to reflect on artificial intelligence, sexuality, contemporary art and creativity, bringing him to the conclusion that the influence of computers on traditional art has been “colossal” and much bigger than that of mass production, like a “Walter Benjamin on steroids.” The possibility for people to reproduce their own physical objects represents a new frontier for business, but even more so for society and culture. A frontier that challenges the limits of production, distribution, possession, use and end-of-life, requiring us to rethink the nature of processes. To continue down this road, it is essential that we rethink forms of ownership and release for creative content. The Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution are all just some of the key moments in history when this potential was almost tangible. But it is only today, now that billions of people are linked directly to each other and physical reality can be digitalized and transmitted in real time, that that potential finds fertile ground to be explored in practice. The concept of Hybrid Space, originally proposed by the architects Frans Vogelaar and Elisabeth Sikiaridi designates the inextricable fusion of physical and media space into a new hybrid unity. Under conditions of intense proliferation of wireless media technologies around the globe, lived physical spaces, in particular especially urban public spaces, achieve a new “thickness” in which local, international and translocal communication flows melt together. In this new constellation political affects flow in almost real-time from one locality to another, spawning new forms of almost instantaneous solidarity but also conflict, creating an increasingly unpredictable and intensely “densified” social field that operates in many localities at the same time. Hybrid Space is discontinuous. It ruptures continuously, not just from place to place, but also from moment to moment. Signals are established and lost in milliseconds. Both confrontational forces as well as strategic power have to adjust themselves to a new 46 conferenze . conferences complexity. The rapid proliferation of street protests, square occupations and tactical encampments around the world in 2011 have testified to these new dynamics - as has their sudden disappearance into an as yet unknown future. The energies that fuelled this remarkable outburst of social and political dissent in public urban space have not simply dissipated with the last encampments swept out of our urban squares, but we have no idea where and how these energies will next manifest themselves. This is the new condition of densified uncertainty that pervades our local hybrid spaces that protestors and keepers of public order alike have to come to terms with. La città come interfaccia The City as Interface Martijn De Waal domenica 11 - 15.00 . Martijn de Waal will show that the idea of interfaces regulating our social relations and spatial practices is not completely new. What matters however is the character of conferenze . conferences 47 these interfaces, both physical and digital, or increasingly: in a combination of these two. Although technology is often presented as a neutral problem solving tool, or even a kind of ‘magic’ that makes our lives easier, it always implies a particular idea of what a city should be, and how social relations ideally should be organized. By comparing interfaces of urban media with historic planning ideals such as those of Archigram and the St. Petersburg Boulevard De Waal will show that usually one out of three urban ideals is at work: a libertarian one that takes the individual as the base of society, a communituarian one, that takes a homogenic community as a departing point or a republican one, that seeks a balance between individual freedom and cooperation with and responsibility towards fellow citizens. Currently, the libertarian model seems to underlie most urban media innovation. But there are certainly chances for digital media that articulate a more republican urban ideal. 48 conferenze . conferences The Piemonte Share Festival this year is peering into the future to look at the city of tomorrow, exploring the Smart City. As a result of all this, we are preparing a Manifesto covering what we believe are the fundamental concepts and guidelines for creating a future we want to live in. The goal, ultimately, is to help steer government action by providing a vision of the future that can become a public policy tool. The first step involves the use of a wiki to share ideas and critical thought. The focus will then be on working those ideas into a Manifesto, to be presented in the months to come. The driving motivation behind the initiative is to respond critically to the European Union’s definition of “Smart City” and the aspects addressing the Smart City presented in the recent Italian Digital Agenda. The aim will then be to encourage greater awareness and discussion of approaches to innovation found in other European countries, the United States and Asia. The “core” working group revolves around the network of people involved in the Share Festival, though inevitably it will be expanded on the basis of issues raised and addressed. Arte e la città del futuro Art and the Future City Alan N. Shapiro domenica 11 - 17.30 . What is the role of art in the social transition towards the future city? What is the role of open source in the “open city”? He will talk about the Situationists, and about how their ideas are being revived today in the new academic field of Social Choreography. What he think is very interesting about the Situationists are their ideas and practices in architecture and urbanism, and their ideas and practices of “wandering in the city” and “diversion of technology” (le dérive and le détournement). He will also discuss some ideas about art, architecture, technology and the future city of Thérèse Tierney. If we examine how the availabilty of digital technology and “information everywhere” is starting to shape the future city, the ways in which digital space is influencing the design and development of urban space, then we will grasp that arriving at clear “successor concepts” and “successor practices” to open-source and freeware is a very critical task. The same is true for the disappearance and possible reconstruction of what has previously been called the “public sphere” and “private life”. We must, at the same time, embrace the ubiquity of available information in the future city that technology affords, and return to the Situationist idea of transforming the city into a ludic playground. Transportation systems most become much more fluid in the mobility that they offer. Social networks must get integrated and embedded into the offline physical world, contributing to a responsive environment. Art must be an integral part of the future city. Alan N.
