SALA GRANDE DEL GALATA SATYR (WE WAX TO WAN) 2016 157.5 X 45.8 X 30.5 CM Nella mostra sono dispersi sette disegni di Matthew Monahan Hall of the Galatian GAUL AWOL 2016 101.6 X 40.7 X 48.3 CM Seven drawings by Matthew Monahan are dispersed in the exhibition space MATTHEW MONAHAN AT THE NATIONAL ROMAN MUSEUM IN PALAZZO ALTEMPS by Ludovico Pratesi a cura di / curated by Ludovico Pratesi Realizzata da / realised by Massimo De Carlo Milan/London/Hong Kong Tutte le immagini courtesy l’artista e Massimo De Carlo, Milano/Londra/Hong Kong All images courtesy the artist and Massimo De Carlo, Milan/London/Hong Kong Dal 6 aprile al 15 maggio 2016 from April 6 to May 15, 2016 The show of the American sculptor Matthew Monahan (1972, Eureka, USA) presents a corpus of eight sculptures created for the occasion, and spread about the various rooms of the Museum of Palazzo Altemps in a dense dialogue among the works and both the renaissance spaces and the archeological collection housed there. The works propose a reworked itinerary through the Museum and suggest a reflection on the forms, iconography and myths of classical antiquity through a contamination of contemporary art. It is a conversation and a confrontation between classical and contemporary which stimulates a new reading of the past as well as the present and invites us to imagine the future. Monahan’s research develops around the idea of sculpture interpreted as a kind of contemporary ruin, whereby the materials, the archeological suggestions and the memory of classical antiquity assume a transitory aspect becoming, rather, suggestive relics suspended in time. The artist taps a large reservoir of images, from antiquity to science fiction and combines iconic elements which differ only in appearance, in a perplexing but highly suggestive manner. These sculptures occupy spaces that the artist deemed empty throughout the Museum. Each one has been conceived with reference to the classical works of art and the furnishings of the room in which it is shown. The intent is to inspire new interpretative and semantic musings that fuse and render complimentary these works, which differ so greatly. The show progresses from the courtyard through to the monumental rooms on the first floor. Masks, soldiers and divinities, reinterpreted by a contemporary hand, are accompanied by seven drawings by the artist, with the same format as the artwork descriptions present in the Museum, to animate a harmonious and compelling mimesis with the institution. Courtyard In the middle of the fountain of the Courtyard a 21st century bust of Neptune emerges from the water, rescuing a child from the waves, referencing the child’s sarcophagus recessed in the wall behind. This is a benevolent god who resembles, from close up, a scuba diver who has saved the life of a young boy in danger. South Loggia To the left of the door, the artist has placed a soldier arranged in an unstable equilibrium, with one arm raised, alluding to that of the statue framed by the door. The work develops a tension and a conversation with the iron rod which balances the column, in a pose that suggests an invitation to enter inside, whilst the figure appears to slip out from the column in the room. South Loggia To the right of the entrance, on the piano nobile of Palazzo Altemps we encounter a soldier, bent double under the weight of history, symbolically represented by a medallion on a chain - an oval mask inspired by the Acrolito Ludovisi (Room of the Trono Ludovisi) similar to the Dionysiac mask made of porphyry, used by the ancients as a fountain (Chamber of the Cardinal). Even the colours of the sculpture reference those of the columns and the ancient marble. Room of the Painted Perspective On the floor of the Room of Painted Perspectives we find the body of a Satyr resembling facially the busto of the Satyr present in the room. The sculpture, seen in perspective, resembles Cristo Morto by Andrea Mantegna (Milan, Pinacoteca di Brera). The colour references the painted marble of the frescoed walls in the room. Room of Ludovisi Ares In the Studiolo a soldier bears a shield similar to those frescoed on the ceiling: he is a knight from space, a Skywalker fallen from the ceiling of the room and catapulted into an episode of Star Wars. His light colours recall those of the frescoed sky of the room. Room of Ludovisi Ares The artist has created a work that dialogues with the Piattaia frescoed on the walls of the Room of Ludovisi Ares, which, following the most widely held hypothesis, recalls the wedding celebrated in the palace in 1474. The sculptue is placed on a metal plate which supports a series of heads with marked features, to give a face to the noble romans present at the ceremony. On the column in the recess of the room the artist has placed the bust of a philosopher which fuses in a single visual image suggestions taken from classical sculpture with the iconography of heroes from american science-fiction cinema: the expression of pride could belong to Jupiter or the Lord of the Galaxy. Studiolo Hall of the Galatian In the Hall of the Galatian the upright soldier wears a similar expression to the characters carved into the front of the large sarcophagus: perhaps a romanised Gaul, perhaps a roman centurion with a suffering face, which alludes to the Suicide Galata in a sort of elective correspondence between past and present, archaeology and contemporaneity.
