01/09/14 11.16 16 arketipo zoom: 20 TEAM DI PROGETTO — RhOME for denCity Team: Team Rhome, Universitá degli Studi di Roma Tre Country: Rome, Italy Score: 840,63 — Phileas Team: Atlantic challenge, École Nationale Supérieure d’architecture De Nantes, École Centrale De Nantes, École Supérieure Du Bois Country: Nantes, France Score: 839,75 — Home with a skin Team: Pret-à-Loger, Delft University of Technology Country: Delft, Netherlands Score: 837,87 — Rooftop Team: Team Rooftop, University of The Arts, Tub Technical University of Berlin Country: Berlin, Germany Score: 823,42 — Your+ Team: Lucerne Team, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, School of Engineering and Architecture ARK86_016-019 Solar.indd 16 Country: Lucerne, Switzerland Score: 804,75 01/09/14 16.48 speciale SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE 2014 zoom 17 — Casa Fenix Team: Team Fenix, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria de Valparaiso, Université de la Rochelle Country: Chile and France Score: 802,42 — Ontop Team: OnTop, University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt Am Main Country: Frankfurt, Germany Score: 793,71 — Embrace Team: DTU Team, The Technical University of Denmark Country: Copenhague, Denmark Score: 780,01 — Maison Reciprocity Team: Team Réciprocité, Université D’angers, Appalachian State University Country: France and USA Score: 776,92 — Ressò Team: Ressò Team, Universitat Politècnica De Catalunya, Escola Tècnica Superior D’arquitectura Del Vallès ARK86_016-019 Solar.indd 17 Country: Barcelona, Spain Score: 776,24 01/09/14 16.48 18 arketipo — Renai House Team: Chiba University Japan, Chiba University Country: Chiba, Japan Score: 774,09 — Orchid House Team: Team Unicode, National Chiao Tung University Country: Hsinchu, Taiwan Score: 772,15 — Casa Team: Team Mexico UNAM, Universidad Nacional Autónoma De México: School of Engineering and School of Architecture, Research Center of Industrial Design, National School of Plastic Art, School of Social and Political Science Country: Mexico City, Mexico Score: 760,17 — Techstyle Haus Team: Inside Out, Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt Country: USA and Germany Score: 657,46 — Symbcity Team: Plateau Team, Universitad de Castilla-La Mancha, Universitad de Alcalá de Henares ARK86_016-019 Solar.indd 18 Country: Spain Score: 650,44 01/09/14 16.48 speciale SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE 2014 zoom 19 — Tropika Team: TEC Team, Institute of Technology Country: Cartago, Costa Rica Score: 588,80 — Adaptive House Team: KMUTT Team, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi Country: Bangkok, Thailand Score: 508,15 — H° Naught Team: Team Shunya, Academy of Architecture, Indian Institute of Technology Country: Mumbai, India Score: 452,30 — Efden Team: EFdeN, Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, University Politehnica Bucharest, «Ion Minc» University of Architecture and Urbanism Country: Bucharest, Romania Score: 348,49 — Liv-Lib’ Team: Team Paris, Ensa Paris Malaquais, Esiee Paris, Estp Paris, Chimie Paristech Ensg, Université Paris Est ARK86_016-019 Solar.indd 19 Country: Paris, France Score: 268,81 01/09/14 16.48 20 arketipo RhOME for dencity - Solar Decathlon Europe 2014, Versailles — Università degli Studi Roma Tre www.rhomefordencity.it Plan of the urban design for the Torre del Fiscale area with the new residential developments and the district services proposed for the regeneration of the area itself. team RhOME Pianta del progetto urbano per l’area di Torre del Fiscale con i nuovi aggregati residenziali e i servizi di quartiere proposti per la riqualificazione del tessuto. Gli edifici sono stati concepiti per avere costi di costruzione contenuti, ma al contempo offrire alta efficienza e bassi ARK86_020-027_Progetto RHOME.indd 20 text chiara tonelli stefano converso photos lorenzo procaccini Pianta del progetto urbano per l’area di Torre del Fiscale con i nuovi aggregati residenziali e i servizi di quartiere proposti per la riqualificazione del tessuto Plan of the urban design for the Torre del Fiscale area with the new residential developments and the district services proposed for the regeneration of the area itself The most important and new requirement of the Solar Decathlon competition was to propose living solutions for the city where the participating university belonged. Roma TRE obviously chose Rome, creating the acronym RhOME – a home for Roma – and working to increase back the density of some urban areas at the periphery between the consolidated city and the countryside, in which to identifying new residential models also looking at community living and shared mobility. Torre del Fiscale is the reality on which the RhOME’s Smart District was experimentally applied, but there are many areas in Rome which are affected by the same degrading conditions. In particular this affects parts of the city with no order, which were built without consent, which do not offer adequate living conditions or security or comfort such to be at acceptable standards for a modern metropolis. The idea was to demolish the shantytown and to give the territory back to the Rome’s countryside after having re-built social housing in the urban voids in the adjacent 01/09/14 11.04 progetti RhOME for dencity Università degli Studi Roma Tre 21 team RhOME Schema del movimento della “vela” fotovoltaica Scheme of the photovoltaic “sail” architectural design: Università Roma TRE – L. Il prototipo RhOME, presentato e testato a Versailles, è uno dei tre appartamenti previsti all’ultimo piano di un edificio di 5 piani fuori terra. The buildings have been conceived to have low construction costs but at the same time to offer efficiency and low consumption to be balanced with the energy production for each apartments. The RhOME prototype, presented and tested in Versailles, is one of the three apartments at the top floor of a five storey building. Its main characteristic is its anti-seismicity and being made of prefabricated wooden elements. The adopted solution envisages the creation of bi-dimensional components for partitions and floors and 3D blocks, compatible with the standard dimensions for transport, in which all the services are concentrated (the 3D core includes the water, mechanical, sewer and electrical system) together with the bathrooms and the kitchens. These blocks arrive already built on site in order to speed up assembly time and reduce costs because they avoid the need of specialised installers on site. Questa “vela” copre parte del tetto e una delle pareti verticali e, grazie all’estrema leggerezza (0,8 kg per modulo, sei volte meno rispetto RhOME for dencity Università degli Studi Roma Tre The stratigraphy of the wood has been studied in order to be suited for the mild warm climate typical of a large part of the Italian peninsula and adding a layer of inert material to increase the mass and becoming a thermal buffer for the internal air. Each apartment is generously provided with internal spaces which facilitate the summer ventilation and the entrance of natural light while deflecting it as in the best Italian tradition. In this way the loggias project towards the outside the domestic environment with two large glazed walls which ensure (in almost all the orientations in which the building could be located in the urban gaps) thermal gains in the winter season too. The loggias are the heart of the building’s energy production, guaranteed by photovoltaic solar panels flexible and integrated in its shading screens. The south facing loggia is protected by a “sail”, a photovoltaic curtain whose primary objective is to stop the sun’s direct action. It is an aluminum sliding structure which holds 98 flexible panels (individual power 51 Wp; 1109x292 mm dimensions; 1.5 mm thickness), each composed of 16 cells an installed on a dark micro-perforated material. ARK86_020-027_Progetto RHOME.indd 24 of the roof and one of the vertical walls and, thanks to its extreme lightness, (0.8 kg per module, six times less than a traditional panel with the same power), it can be manually operated to cover the loggia. The parapet is instead thermo-dynamic, it uses the solar radiation and the resulting thermal gap to transform, thanks to a heat pump, into thermal energy for heating purposes. These systems are innovative for two reasons: they combine two functions, they do not simply produce but can be used as well; secondly the production panels are no longer installed on the roof and therefore dimensionally limited by the roof area but they are associated to the loggias and therefore to the apartments. In this way the production systems are exactly sized in relation to the number of families occupying the building. This solution brought to a revolution: to dimension the energy production against the real requirements of the occupants, while putting the individual at the centre of the design process, and to functionally integrate the energy productions systems with the architecture. 01/09/14 11.04 A Pianta del prototipo. The system uses the solar radiation of the air’s external heat, therefore it can function with a very small electrical consumption, with any weather condition and time including nightime. The system is taken from the refrigeration industry and works like an inverted fridge: the gas contained in the aluminium panels’ circuits expands as a result of the difference in temperature between itself (-30 °C) and the outside. Using a heat pump, the heat of thermal gas is released in the water and, at the same time, it manages to cool the environment while condensing the air humidity. The efficiency of this system is very high, it uses very little energy with a performance six times more than energy consumption. The system works in symbiosis with the panels of the photovoltaic curtain: these, once activated, produce heat and therefore, when they are in front of the thermo-dynamic system, they increase the temperature gap between the outside and the gas facilitating the efficiency of the thermo-dynamic production. The parapet vice versa, giving cold back, increases the efficiency of the photovoltaic panels while cooling them. The panel has been made bespoke for RhOME while introducing a pattern for the channels which is designed and sized with an ad-hoc software to control the gas volume needed for the ideal functioning.
