Interni, the magazine of contemporary design and architecture, the voice of Italian design in the world for over sixty years, presents “Interni Design Aperitivo”: a cycle of encounters for an open debate on international design and business Made in Italy, in collaboration with ICE-Agenzia (Italian Trade Commission) and SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO, the most important international fair of furnishings and design. The talks, which are open to the public, will be held in the flagship stores of some of the most interesting Italian design brands, transformed into a unique stage for the occasion. The guest speakers, from some of the most influential international architectural practices based in London, will discuss their design philosophy, alongside the design know-how and heritage typical of the Italian manufacturing industry. “The protagonist of the conferences is Design, seen as a universal language of contemporary life,” says Gilda Bojardi, editor of Interni. “We are now looking at a more flexible concept of living that permeates every part of the city, public or private. If the 20th century was the century of modernity, the 21st is open to new languages, in which individual values focus on achieving widespread wellbeing. The magazine has closely observed the growth of design nurtured by the intuitions and works of brilliant, courageous men of culture, architects and designers and entrepreneurs. INTERNI continues to be a attentive and up-to-date observatory on the world of design, foregrounding and forecasting trends in design and architecture. Since the first half of the 1990s the magazine has been part of the Periodicals of AME Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, the most important Italian publishing group. With issue 650 in April 2015 INTERNI has an updated editorial formula with new graphic design and a structure enriched with columns and in-depth analysis, especially in the section on design. The monthly has developed over the years, under the guidance of Gilda Bojardi, into a system of parallel publications that has transformed a monthly magazine from an elite audience to a mass audience. Over six special decades, INTERNI has grown up with design, which has spread and invaded all aspects of everyday life; the magazine has made an increasing, more decisive commitment to the communication of design culture on an international level, promoting unprecedented creative alliances between designers, companies, cultural exponents and design professionals in the widest sense of the term. INTERNI’s activities also include the creation and coordination of events and exhibitions, organized to encourage encounters between those who design and those who produce. The themes of experimentation and the temporary installation are addressed, in an effort to extend design culture to a wider audience, by the events organized since the late 1990s during the FuoriSalone in Milan. The FuoriSalone is a renowned urban phenomenon that enlivens the city of Milan during the week of the Salone del Mobile, an initiative created precisely by INTERNI, back in 1990; today the magazine coordinates the communication of about 500 events. INTERNI 654, September 2015 After the launch of INTERNI publications in Russia (2011), Thailand (2014) and China (2015), an expansion of the international editions is now planned. It soon became the international reference point of the furniture sector, where ideas, design, technology, innovation and quality meet in an unparalleled atmosphere of creativity. The international character of the institution is reflected in Saloni WorldWide Moscow, held in October each year, attracting professionals from Russia and other regions, including the former Soviet republics and the Balkan states. The two events – with a selected number of exhibitors representing Italian excellence – provide a showcase on a worldwide level for Made in Italy, one of the loftiest expressions of Italian culture. High-quality Italian furnishings, over the years, have passed from the status of functional objects to that of true objects of desire, thanks to an industrial and cultural process that combines craftsmanship, innovation, creativity and originality, known all over the world as Made in Italy. The 54th edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano – in April at Fiera Milano in Rho – confirms that this fair is the one not to be missed on a worldwide level, with a quota of foreign professionals of 69%. At this edition, 310,840 visitors explored 20 pavilions, with over 2000 exhibitors and 700 young talents at the SaloneSatellite. The main features were the quality of the products on display, but also the excellence of the booths themselves and the variety of the visitors. Architects, designers, buyers, facility managers, distributors and journalists from all over the world come to the Salone, attracted by the chance to get a first-hand look at new products and trends. Alongside the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition – which welcomed 1504 exhibitors in a display area of 152,200 square meters – Euroluce, with its 475 exhibitors, presented the best technical lighting proposals. Located in front of Euroluce, on an ideal path connecting the world of lighting design with that of work environments, was the other biennial of odd-numbered years: Workplace3.0, the new SaloneUfficio, offered an original concept to update the success of an initiative that focuses on the workplace, gathering the best in design and technology for the office, thanks to 127 exhibitors. An important multimedia event – “IN ITALY” – also enhanced the range of offerings of the Salone. Foster Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University in 2011, and he has taught and lectured worldwide at schools of architecture in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 2012 David Chipperfield curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. In 2014 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Italian furnishings firm Driade. A discussion on Museum, Architecture and Context Drawing on his extensive experience, Sir David Chipperfield discusses his approach to museum design, the importance of a sense of place and deep understanding of the balance between the cultural meaning and the technical performance of the building, in a conversation with Kate Goodwin, Head of Architecture and Heinz Curator at the Royal Academy of Arts. The practice has produced an exciting range of modern and innovative work, including public buildings and spaces, urban and rural regeneration, landscape design, bespoke homes, housing and arts and education buildings. As well as the expertise developed over 30 years working as a teacher and architect, Anthony has a keen interest in design and its direct impact on economic issues and the positive development of society. Anthony is Deputy Chair of the Design South-East panel, with particular responsibility for the east of England, and also sits on the design review panel for the Greater Norwich Development Partnership. He is Visiting Professor of Architecture at Norwich University of the Arts, and is currently President of the Norfolk Association of Architects. A CONTEXTUAL APPROACH to Rural PLACEMAKING Through careful study of the context and its points of reference – and at times through adventurous experimentation – the studio Hudson Architects has developed a fascinating approach to placemaking in rural settings. The director of the firm Anthony Hudson will present a series of recent case studies, demonstrating how the practice explores an architectural approach to setting through shape, material and texture. SCAVOLINI Scavolini was founded in Pesaro in 1961 through the initiative of the brothers Valter and Elvino Scavolini. The small company was rapidly transformed from artisan production of kitchens into one of the most important Italian industrial manufacturers. In 1984 Scavolini reached a position of leadership in the sector, which it still holds today. The industrial facilities have an area of 200,000 m2, employing 550 persons and achieving sales, in 2014, of 173 million euros. Scavolini Store London, opened in June, is the company’s first monobrand outlet in the UK. Located inside a recently constructed modern building in the affluent zone of West Hampstead, the flagship store has an area of 280 m2. Thanks to 10 shop windows with a height of 5 meters, the showroom is a reference point in the city for all lovers of Italian design. Since establishing ABA in 1996 her work has attracted international acclaim for its conceptual rigor and formal language. Born in Ontario, Canada in 1962, she moved to London in 1988 after graduating with a B.E.S. and B.Arch from the University of Waterloo. Recently named by the Sunday Times as one of Britain’s 500 Most Influential people, Alison Brooks is the only UK architect to have won all three of the UK’s most prestigious awards for architecture: the Stephen Lawrence Prize, the Manser Medal and the 2008 RIBA Stirling Prize. With early private houses published worldwide and featured in the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary Architecture, the practice is now undertaking arts, education, residential and urban projects across the UK and Europe. Her largest civic commission to date is a full academic and residential Quadrangle for Exeter College, Oxford. Currently under construction, this will be the first Oxford College to be designed by a female architect. CRAFTING EXPERIENCE: A NEW COLLEGIATE ARCHITECTURE Alison Brooks will discuss contemporary craftsmanship and digital processes in ABA’s design for the new Exeter College Cohen Quadrangle, a full teaching and residential campus in Oxford. In response to China’s dramatic developmental demands, designers globally have recently been grappling with new ways to understand the practice and production of design in this ‘new frontier.’ The situation has required a new thought paradigm for approaching specific issues related to designing, planning and building in China. BEAUTY IN THE TIME OF THE MACHINE As data proliferate they transform physical places into networks of information, systems of overlapping infrastructures inhabited by tribes of connected people. Yet people are more than mere nodes in an information network. Humans are moved by ideas and beauty, not by optimised performance. They cannot be isolated from nature or its rhythms. Decisions are made by intuition as often as by analysis. Needs and desires change. People want physical spaces from the urban scale down to the scale of their individual homes and workplaces, that reflect their personalities and immediate contexts. If the built environment is an infrastructure, it must remain in some ways an open-ended framework that can adapt to the people who inhabit it. NBBJ designer Clark Pickett will explore the rigorous, iterative methodologies as well as the human engagements that, together, allow designers to create spaces that delight the senses and respond to their inhabitants within the context of their environments. Ha seguito da vicino la crescita che il design ha saputo esprimere grazie alle intuizioni e all’opera di geniali uomini di cultura, di architetti e designer e di imprenditori intuitivi e coraggiosi. INTERNI continua a essere osservatorio attento e aggiornato del mondo del progetto, anticipatore di tendenze nel campo del design e dell’architettura. Dalla prima metà degli anni Novanta la rivista è entrata nell’orbita dei Periodici di AME Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, il più importante gruppo editoriale italiano. Con il numero 650 di Aprile 2015 INTERNI si presenta con una rinnovata formula editoriale, con una nuova veste grafica e una struttura arricchita da nuove rubriche e approfondimenti, in particolare nelle pagine dedicate al design. Il mensile ha sviluppato negli anni, con la direzione di Gilda Bojardi, un sistema di pubblicazioni parallele che ha trasformato la rivista mensile da media d’élite a mass-media. In questi sei decenni così speciali, INTERNI è cresciuto con il design, che si è diffuso e ha contagiato la vita quotidiana; la rivista ha assunto un impegno sempre più deciso nella comunicazione della cultura del progetto a livello internazionale, promuovendo inedite alleanze creative tra progettisti, imprese, esponenti della cultura e operatori del progetto nel senso più ampio. Nel 1985 ha fondato lo studio David Chipperfield Architects. È stato Professore di Architettura presso la Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste a Stoccarda dal 1995 al 2001 e Norman R. Foster visiting professor del corso di Architectural Design presso l’Università di Yale nel 2011. Ha insegnato e tenuto conferenze in tutto il mondo presso le scuole di architettura in Austria, Italia, Svizzera, Regno Unito e Stati Uniti. Nel 2012 David Chipperfield è stato curatore della 13a Mostra Internazionale di Architettura della Biennale di Venezia. Accanto alle competenze sviluppate in 30 anni di lavoro come insegnante e architetto, Anthony coltiva un profondo interesse per il design e il suo impatto diretto sugli aspetti economici e sul progresso della società. Anthony è Vicepresidente della commissione di revisione del design, Design South East, con particolare responsabilità per la parte orientale dell’Inghilterra. Fa anche parte della commissione di revisione del design per la Greater Norwich Development Partnership. UN APPROCCIO ALLA FORMAZIONE DI LUOGHI IN CONTESTI RURALI Tramite uno studio attento del contesto e dei punti di riferimento – e a volte tramite una sperimentazione avventurosa – lo studio Hudson Architects ha adottato un approccio affascinante al placemaking negli ambienti rurali. Il direttore dello studio Anthony Hudson presenta una serie di case study recenti per dimostrare come lo studio sia alla ricerca di un approccio architettonico dell’ambiente attraverso la forma, il materiale e la texture. SCAVOLINI Scavolini nasce a Pesaro nel 1961 grazie all’intraprendenza dei fratelli Valter ed Elvino Scavolini e in pochi anni si trasforma da piccola azienda per la produzione artigianale di cucine in una delle più importanti realtà industriali italiane. Da quando ha creato ABA nel 1996, il suo lavoro ha suscitato il plauso internazionale per il suo rigore concettuale e il suo linguaggio formale. Nata in Ontario, Canada, nel 1962, si è trasferita a Londra nel 1988 dopo essersi laureata conseguendo il diploma B.E.S e B.Arch presso l’Università di Waterloo. Entrata di recente nella classifica del Sunday Times come una delle 500 persone più influenti della Gran Bretagna, Alison Brooks è l’unica architetto britannico ad aver vinto tutti e tre i premi di architettura più prestigiosi del Regno Unito: il Stephen Lawrence Prize, il Manser Medal e il RIBA Stirling Prize nel 2008. La più ovvia di queste domande difficili è la mancanza di un linguaggio di design coerente che può essere considerato culturalmente radicato in un posto e, nel contempo, condividere uno scopo universale. Al design della Cina odierna non solo manca un’identità che consenta al paese di affermarsi, ma anche un Manifesto. La Bellezza nell’era delle macchine L’ipereccesso d’informazione trasforma i luoghi fisici, in reti di informazioni, sistemi di infrastrutture che si sovrappongono, popolate da tribù di gente connessa. Eppure le persone sono più di semplici nodi della rete informativa, mosse dalle idee e dalla bellezza, piuttosto che dalle performance ottimizzate. Non possono essere avulsi dalla natura o dai suoi ritmi. Le decisioni vengono prese sia per intuito che seguendo la logica. Le persone richiedono spazi fisici a partire da quelli urbani, a quelli privati e di lavoro, che riflettono la propria personalità e il proprio contesto. Se l’ambiente costruito è un’infrastruttura, deve rimanere in qualche modo un sistema indefinito che si possa adattare alle persone che lo abitano. Designer per NBBJ, Clark Pickett esplora le rigorose metodologie iterative e il coinvolgimento umano che, insieme, stimolano i designer a progettare spazi che dilettano i sensi e soddisfano agli abitanti nel contesto del loro ambiente.
